4 BT Cummins Powered 1998 Ford Explorer

- This 1998 Ford Explorer belongs to a fellow co-worker, he liked my 4BT Powered 71 Dodge, and thought he would like to do a similar conversion to his. We took some measurements, and began sourcing parts. We started this project around Christmas 2009, it was completed early January 2010.
Barry has driven his 4BT powered explorer now for 3 years, and has logged over 100K miles since the conversion, averaging 30+ miles per gallon on fuel.
We custom fabricated our motor mounts, the A/C bracket, all transmission lines, as well as the power steering lines. The Adapter plate, flywheel, starter, and transmission were pulled from a wrecked Ram 250 pick up, we also sourced the vacuum pump, and power steering pump.
We custom fabricated a turbo spacer to lower the turbo charger to assist in hooking up the exaust. We also custom fabricated the turbo charger lines to the intake, and the oil drain back line.
All and all a successful home conversion, why can't we get something like this from an auto manufacturer. Hope you enjoy the video!!!!!! - Авто та транспорт
You made a Ford Explorer Economical,, How Cool! Good sound!
Love it! Try to install an intercooler! The power will increase a lot! From 105 hp to ~140 hp. Great job you did! 👏👏👏👏
I've never heard of a Cummins Diesel conversion in a Ford Explorer. I can imagine a Ford Expedition or Excursion. Nice sounding engine. It looks like it fit quite comfy in it, as if Ford installed it.
fast food drive thrus must love you
It came out real nice, it was put together real quick too, I spent three or four months putting mine together, we finished this in less than 30 days. This vehicle has more sound deadening insulation thus the sound from within the cab is much less than the truck. The engine was a tight fit, there was a lot of fabricating to make accommodations for the turbo charger.
outstanding job looks like extremely professional installation.
and sounds just as good as it looks.
With a controller and a bit of time you can get a tach signal from the alternator so your tachometer will work. Of course that requires a bit of math due to the different pulley sizes but it's easy.
VERY NICE CONVERSION
Awesome! Beautiful job and amazing fuel mileage!
So great, thanks for sharing
I used to have a 92' Explorer Sport....I miss that little truck. I was just thinking the other day how fun it would have been to drop a new Cummins R2.8 under the hood of that buggy! The 4BT's are good little engines too!
Was just sitting next to this on the parkway in meridianville. I saw the Cummins badge and thought yea right, then I cut the radio down..
Awesome work!
A big HELL YEAH to that combo! Love the titan, and you really can't hate on a cummins... ever. :) Ready to see the TITIN!
Baaad Ass daily driver!!! Love the stock factor!
That is awesome nice work!
Greetings from 2019! Great swap, guys. I am planning to swap 4BT into Ford Expedition. Thanks)
I NEED one of those!
nice project props big time
The 4bt is awesome 😎. But damn they're heavy.
i love that truck! that so sick
That's interesting and pretty neat. 👍👍
That is so badass I love cummins. I want to put a 4 bt in my ford, its so weird seeing that explorer roar on by haha I bet that gets some head turning.
That's very sweet. Love it
Really amazing swap, clean and everything works and the transmission shifts very nice. The owner could go a little farther by installing a layer or two of sound deadening but the motor if like music :).
Macht weiter so !
Sounds like an Isuzu npr. Cool little truck
very cool truck
Wow that is quite the Frankenstein there. Would have been awesome to see that build all the way through on UA-cam
well you did an amazing job haha. i admire you old sport!
Nice!
God I would love to stick a 400-500hp / 1000ft/lb turbo 4BT built Industrial Injection into my Exploder.
Amazing
Thank you. I got a phone call today telling me that Cummins has teamed with Nissan, and the Titan is soon to be powered by a 5.0 liter Cummins V8 Diesel. That will be interesting!
interesting swap
My friend put a 4BT in his 2004 F150, he replaced a lot of parts on the engine before driving it. A new turbo, fuel pump rod, waist gate, also a Alison transmission. The truck gets 30+ MPG. He invested about $7,000 in 2010, but I think it was worth it.
way cool,,,want one!
Awesome job guys!! Considering the same swap in a Jeep Liberty
Just buy a diesel liberty
Thin blue line, oh yeah. Adds 15hp every time
The proof is in the mileage and the reliability. Great Job. I have a 4bt and I just bought an older ranger. Can anyone help me with the mounts? Any drawings out there. I love how you retained the AC and the cruise. Very very nice.
30 mpg!! wow impressive
Sounds like a Kubota tractor
I know imagine 100K miles like that.
He tows a trailer often, hauling anything from ATVs, Jet Skis, boats, Tractor equipment, etc. I haven't seen him haul anything as large as an automobile, but I have pulled cars, and trucks on a car trailer with mine, the engine is very capable. Your not going to set any land speed records, but definitely gets the job done dependably, and economically.
With that sound the next you should make dually rear wheels fit
I did not know I wanted this.
Would love to make one of two conversions. A 4bt in a 2011 Jeep Wrangler WK matched with an NV500 5-speed manual transmission, or a 6bt in a Hummer H1 coupled with an Allison 6-speed auto with a transfer case that allows selection of RWD when you don't need the 4WD.
i've been thinking about doing this to my 99 explorer sport
It's a job, but well worth the effort.
What t case did you end up using? Nice job with conversion. Did the oil pan have to be modified? I am using a 3" body lift on my 2004 explorer with 4bt and 47RH and DLD241. What gears are you running to get that mileage?
Thank you for your comment, this was not a 4X4 this is a 2WD Explorer. Let me know if I can help.
What are the fuel economy? MPG?
thats so cool you dont get the attention you deserve
I stuffed a 6bt into a 96 mustang, Had to do bunch of fabricating but I got it done so im sure you could make a fiero happen then have decent room and plenty of space to make more room with that pocket in the back
If I knew anything about a 4BT I would love to put one in my 1995 Bronco.
That's a nice conversion on that Explorer. Has he thought about adding an intercooler to the system, or is he happy the way it is? I will say this, I am jealous of how quiet his truck is on the inside. My 88 Comanche has earned the nickname rattlecan ever since I did my 4bt conversion. No sound deadening though, which doesn't help. I've been thinking of adding dynamat to the firewall and floors, and some hush mat on top, to try and reduce the noise a bit. Would be kind of nice to hear my radio haha
That's Shields Rd in Huntsville!
What would be the towing capacity after conversion, if I expected to keep it under a certain speed, for example under 65?
my question is will it hold together on the highway? or is it seen to be more strictly for city travel and its power? i have a 94 explorer that i would like to convert to diesel.
Did you need to do anything with the wiring harness?
Badass
Ah! Sweet! Do you have anymore videos of this vehicle?
i love to have that.
Nice! I've got a 98 Explorer XLT with the SOHC 4.0 v6 and 3 speed Auto. But when the 4.0 timing chain gives me problems, I'm gonna do this conversion. BUT I also wanna do either a 5 or 6 speed conversion too. Would the conversion be just as easy with a 5 or 6 speed manual?
I think smaller engines should be utilized, the RAM 3/4 ton started with a 5.9, while Ford pushed on for a 7.3, your average fellow does not need this kind of monstrous power plants. You wont run a drag race with one of these small engines stock, but really is 0-60 times that important on the road. I get 28 mpg around town in my 4BT powered 71 Dodge 1/2 ton, even with the A/C on, and I can still pull trailers, they need to bring more smaller engines to market.
The 4BT in my Dodge Truck has the P7100 pump and is actually rated at 130hp. We did not change any governor springs.
thats bad ass....
NICE JOB
I also have a 98 explorer and was thinking about to dod the same , mine is all wheel drive. Did you retain the all wheel drive ? or is it 4x4 ? and how did you mate them together ?
thank you in advance
what was the most challenging part about this project? very nice truck. I admire your work!
how are the vibrations? is it a bit much or livable?
Thanks for taking me along for a ride with you (video-wise). I would like to get myself an Explorer and 4bt the living daylights out of it.
Better than keeping the 4.0L V6 that was formerly in it.
That sounds like a rather tight fit. I would think a 2.8 litre diesel, like that used in the Jeep Liberty CRD would be more comfortable. But whatever works.
The camber on the front... ball joints?
You could probably use the tach sensor off a 12 valve ram to get the tach working.
One can hope that there will be some smaller diesel options, Ford has that 3.2L I5 Duratorque epa legal for the new Transit van in the US...it would be great in an F150 :)
I have a 99 ford ranger 4 wheel drive I want to do this to any tips would help! Nice video!
how much do u think that explorer can tow ?
So how is it still doing? also noticed this is in Huntsville. not to far from hartselle.
How difficult was it to get the factory instrumentation to work?
How did you tie in the speedo and all the other gauges
The instruments don't know what engine lives beneath the hood, all you need is the correct sensors from your original engine to supply the needed signals to the instruments.
i think i saw it in scottsboro al at the begining of the week if it was not you there is one around here just like it
Thats it.
What kind of engine did this vehicle have before the conversion?
I wouldn't go that far. If it fits, and it works, I'd say go for it.
Do you think a 5L Turbo Diesel like that is overkill in a 1/2 ton? I had heard original rumors that a 2.8L ISF Cummins was going to be used in the Nissan. It seems like they are sacrificing a good amount of efficiency for bigger power numbers to me...what do you think about it?
105hp and 265Ft/lbs of torque in stock settings. A Ppumped is 120hp and 300ft/lbs of torque. Did you guys put the 366 3200 governor spring on the VE pump or did you leave the 2500rpm spring on there?
How id the stock drive train holding up?
If I saw that somewhere Id be looking everywhere to figure out where that noise was comkng from lmao
Hi there I have a 1995 white one and love my Cummins engine any chance you have a list on what all needed? Great video
What kind of gearbox used, manual or automatic?
I want to do something like this with the explorer sitting and doing nothing in my yard. Its awd however.
wanting to do this swap in my 2006 explorer limited
how does it do on highway, can it hit 80 when passing
The Blazer would be pretty easy, straight forward swap, a fiero on the other hand, room and height would pose a big problem.
I sure do wish Ford sold F250-F350 Super Duty trucks with 4BTs in them in the US like they do in South America. I just don't trust complicated V8 diesels or believe they are efficient enough to justify they extra cost. With the amount I will use my F250 and considering the fact that it saved me $9000 I just went with the 6.2 Gas V8 it's not too bad. If I am careful on the highway it will pull down 18-20mpg depending on terrain at 60mph in cruise. One day I would love to do a 4BT conversion on it
Im trying to decide what to convert my 96 blazer or 84 fiero to a 4 bt
Hahahaha "Take that Kia!" heck yea
Are you using the stock suspension? I’m ordering a 4bt tomorrow for my 99 ranger and I heard you have to straight axle it but some people said you could use the Ford explore front end so was wondering if that’s true
Yes, it’s on stock suspension, absolutely no issues.
How do you get the transmission to have shifts? There is no longer a signal from the engine to tell it when to.
you can get a stand alone controller or modify the automatic (electronic) transmission to shift correctly
think i could swap a 7.3 in one 😂
Morgan Rides I was thinking about it with mine
Awesome! Is this your Ford Explorer, or does it belong to a friend?
I have a 99 explorer with the 4.0L v6 and its a good engine but I'm getting horrible mileage out I need to do this swap
Do you guys still do this?
Is engine noise exceptionally loud and or can it be muffled with soundproofing?
The 4BT is louder than the 6BT, and there is an audible noise level, having this engine in a more modern automobile makes the interior noise more at a respectable level, but sound deadener could be added.
They need to bring more diesel engines to market. I would love a Dakota size truck with a diesel.
This belongs to a friend, I helped him put it together.
