  • TFA has a serious weight on its shoulders. It has to OPEN the saga back up for the world. I personally believe that The Force Awakens has a perfect introduction as far as a Star Wars film goes. Its a work of art, nostalgia, and a bit of new ideas all mixed up into epic.

Hi! Awesome Video, but I must admit I disagree. I know, I know negative energy, outrage, how can one not love this movie etc. But I am not here to be negative and condescending, I want to be constructive and give my own opinion to the movies' opening!
First the cross guard star destroyer... I did not like the design, I was always a fan of the sleek dagger/arrowhead design of the Star Destroyer, and the crossguard, at least to me felt off. Nevertheless, I, one gigantic star wars fanboy, was enthusiastic and watched on.
Transition to the Stormtroopers... flickering lights, soldiers standing straight, the new armours... my heartbeat rose. I always loved the armoured soldiers in star wars, clones and stormtroopers, even as a child I collected their figurines even before watching the first-star wars movie, and the new designs were awesome. They looked wonderful and the tube lights made the shot perfect. I immediately got thrilled about what was to come. A battle, seemingly no sith so an actual battle, not some lightsaber fight! (Don't get me wrong, I love a cool duel but at the start of a movie?)
But then... BB8. I know what I am about to say is absolutely subjective, and therefore shouldn't be said, but all of these evaluations are subjective. Even yours so I guess it is alright to include this. I hate BB8. I am absolutely convinced, that he is the most useless character of the franchise (Not counting any of the new introductions from Episode 8... that movie was bad). To this day I wonder why he was there. Why not use R2? That whole: He hasn't activated since Luke left thing is a stupid plot, and adds nothing. It just seems illogical.
Then the talk scene. It was alright, but since Orson Tekka dies it seems a bit pointless. But it contained much-needed exposition and was a crucial brick, I understand its necessity. Then the attack... the front door opening felt off to me. It is a system that makes 0 sense for this kind of attack. it was needed at D-Day because the Landing boats had to deliver the troops as close to the shores as possible because the soldiers packed so much equipment that they couldn't swim. A man who jumped over the sides often drowned, as the ground sunk deeply very shortly and so that design made sense there, but in such an attack it just gives the possibility to the attacker to aim at the door before you can even see them. Like even at D-Day many died before leaving their ships, mowed down by machinegun fire from the German defenders. Vertical doors, like those of Black Hawks (or the clone shuttles), are much more practical then front ramps (but I am overthinking this with my love for military equipment and realism, so to move on:) All in all I liked what conspired then. Troopers actually hitting targets. The Resistance (srsly why not stick with rebels?) got wrecked and I could only nod approvingly. For one of the first times we see that Imperial Training should not be beaten by teddy bears but then... sigh
I really, really, really hated Poes show of, killing half a dozen stormtroopers and sending BB8 into the desert. First of all the droid... like it was so obvious what this was: Leia did it in A new hope, so let's have one of our protagonists do it too!!!! Not very creative if one asks me. And as you say yourself a stupid idea that works out (huge coincidence... for me this just proves that Poe is an idiot... as he will prove again in scenes and movies to come). THen he kills all those stormtroopers by himself... rendering them once again faceless minions without any skill that can be slaughtered in huge numbers to make our protagonists look awesome... I loved that he killed Finns friend, and how Finn reacted, you explained the reasons therefore perfectly in your video, but Poe on his killing spree... why not let him kill that one man before being disarmed. He is an awesome pilot, must he be an awesome gunslinger too? I loved Kylos appearance (in this scene) and him slaying our supposed mentor figure, the blaster bolt freezing was shocking and all, but Phasma seemed out of Place... we didn't know her, she hadn't fought and all I thought was: Why does she wear shiny armour and only leaves the shuttle once everything is done? Is she too valuable to die? .... no she is a regular trooper and will act like that from now on? Alright.
Then It was alright... they could have used bombs to blow up the X wing but meh...
It was overall really well done, but not perfect... and sadly completely destroyed by what followed. Finn, for example, is fine with gunning down all his friends while he helps to let the murderer of his best friend escape! I thought he wanted to kill Poe when he took him, or talk to him, and when he escaped I was impressed, but the escape was... well not best crafted. Poe not being at the landing site was strange too, I won't even talk about Ma-Rey-Sue or Kylo destroying PCs in anger... that made him look more like a spoiled kid than a Sith. EP7 was not very good, the best star wars movie, but else it wasn 't much... and then EP8 really disappointed me.
I believe they just wasted a lot of potential.
Greetings and I like your videos, jo2crafter

I always kind of thought (maybe from the trailer having Finn wielding a saber), that Kylo thought the Force awakened in Finn. Then after the cut to BB8, Poe getting taken off the ship to interrogation, Finn's helmet off, then cut to Rey.
At the very least, it's pulling him in a different direction...but later he tells Poe, "because it's the right thing to do".

Wow! What a great breakdown. I love hearing people who are knowledgeable about Star Wars and movie making talk about film scenes. I only found this channel a month ago, but it has quickly shot up to the top of my favorites list right there with Star Wars Explained.
    My wishlist of scene breakdowns:
    1) Opening Scene in Revenge of the Sith: Seeing a mature Anakin in control of his force powers and coming into his own with Chaos all around him gave me chills the first time I saw it)
    2) The Battle of Crait: I tear up every time I watch this...the score, Luke and Leia, Luke confronting Kylo, Finn deciding to dig his heels in, Leia Poe passing the torch to Poe, Rey in the Falcon “I like this”. In my humble Opinion it’s the best 20 minutes in Star Wars
    3) Han frozen in Carbonite & The Vader and Luke lightsaber doozy on Cloud City: I dont think this powerful moment needs any explanation!!
Keep up the great work!! Love the content!

Agreed. The intro to TFA is pretty great. It’s a nice fresh start to the sequel trilogy. And despite how anyone feels about the sequel trilogy, you can’t deny how cool the intro was to this movie! Especially when it’s been 10 years since the last Star Wars movie (ROTS) so when you’re sitting in the theater and seeing this for the first time, it’s simply amazing. It’s also great watching it several times after the first viewing too

This will probably not be a suggestion but in other Star Wars video essays there was a couple that talked about character intros but in different subjects. In Lessons from a screenplay there is a video called “Fault in our Star Wars” where the video compared Jyn Erso and Rey in one scene he praised Rey’s introduction when we saw the first five minutes of her screentime from searching through the At at walker , going to the junkyard and coming home and being more or less lonely yet still waits for the “arrival of her family” to leave Jakku for good. Then in another video from a channel called “Films&Stuff” the narrator talks about motifs and symbolism with masks through the character journey of Rey, Finn and Kylie REN, who they were in the beginning of the film with their masks on and their growth by the third act without their masks. You can guess that in the beginning they wore masks as if to not only hide their identity but also you know have a facade about themselves only to and I will quote REN “only way to become what you were meant to be”. There might be other but these two came to mind

You’re so right about the opening sequence. It subtly and not so subtly tells us what we need to know about the ST.
The light of Jakku was shrouded by the First Order ship, but from it came four transports. I believe the number is important. I say this because the four shuttles FOLLOW Kylo as he leaves Jakku. Maybe it’s nothing, but I think it’s symbolic.
Yoda’s silhouette on one of the transports filled me with instant hope. I only wish I had seen him when I first watched the film. Unfortunately, my aging eyes didn’t see the Grand Master until I watched TFA in the comfort of my own home. If he’s there then a powerful ally is in someone’s corner. 😉
Lor is still a mystery box for me, but the ring on his hand is a key for opening it. If I told you who I think he really is, you’d laugh your ass off. 😂 Btw, I think Lor was blatantly using the Force. His arm movements reminded me of Kenobi.
The shot of Kylo walking out of the light and into the dark was perfect. Kudos, JJ.
The scene between Kylo and Poe spoke of familiarity to me, and I instantly knew that Kylo Ren was not Darth Vader. I was totally fine with that revelation. Vader would never have stooped down to talk to a prisoner. He would have towered over him, tall and threatening. Poe’s comments endeared his character to me, too. I realize the scene could have been shot that way because Adam Driver is so much taller than Oscar Isaac, but I think there’s more between the two characters than we’ve been led to believe.
Kylo’s Force powers were amazing and reveal far more than anyone talks about. I stand by my belief that the audience succumbed to a Jedi mind trick right from the start. My heart pounds a little faster when I contemplate the possible implications.
As for Finn, I think as his friend died, he did more than leave bloody streaks on the helmet. Finn’s response indicates that a possible Legends Force power was used. Kylo didn’t kill him because the goal was accomplished. The laser bolt was meant to jar him out of his “shock” and get him to proceed as planned. “No one is ever really gone.”
Hey, if I’m wrong then I will gladly concede that I am, but my ideas aren’t wishful thinking. It’s my interpretation of the opening scene. It’s one of my all time favorite openings in a SW film because it’s ingenious.

Excellent breakdown! By far my two favorite scenes in TFA are both the opening introduction scene and Finn and Poe’s escape from the Star Destroyer. Both are high intensity and fast pace like real combat. But it’s really able to retain a pace that’s perfect for both character development and story set-up. The timing is perfect. The only other scene I love as much is the deleted Finn and Han “stormtrooper boots” scene. It’s hilarious and total Han Solo at his best.
I’d love to see you do more of these. Maybe even breaking down more scenes in TFA and TLJ.

Hi, Emily Peterson! I’m so sad that he took all of his great work down. I find some hope in the scene he chose from TFA because of its theoretical implications. I do feel like he’s straying away from Reylo, and I thought that right before he released the video about his struggles with depression, etc. I briefly thought that he was in a dark place and that’s why he was starting to deviate.
He assured us in the comments that he’s fine. So, I’m waiting for his new theory to arrive today and I’m hoping he still believes in redemption for Ben Solo.

    • @squirlygirly5229
      @squirlygirly5229 5 років тому

Skye McKenna Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on with him. I noticed in a couple of his newer videos before he deleted them that he diviated a little from his original ideas. I’ve also thought it could be due to depression. In the video he shared about his personal life he revealed a very personal reason that he started his Star Wars UA-cam channel, (to have a fighting voice for the women in the Reylo community). Without giving anything away, he said he hates seeing women getting mistreated so he wanted to protect us. I was so deeply touched after watching that video. However not to long after he released that video I watched a video from a different Reylo source where these Reylo fans totally attacked Wayward Jedi on all of his theories! I couldn’t believe that after every thing the Reylo community has gone through, that they would turn around and attack a fellow Reylo supporter like him. It okay to have a different opinion but I didn’t expect to see such hate from these Reylo fans. It really saddened me and pissed me off. I’m wondering that after all the effort he went through against the antis to only be attacked by the very people he was protecting made him finally say that he’s had enough! For this reason I don’t even follow the content of that other Reylo source anymore. His reasons for deleting his channel could be because of something else, but IDK. I just hope he is okay and will one day reupload his Reylo theory videos. What did you think of his new written theory?

It would be so nice to compare the different moods of Kylo's theme music. This is the only scene I've found where his theme included those short fast trumpet notes that add great tension. In TLJ his music seemed more strong and dramatic (except this scene). And then the Crait fight after he realized Luke was projecting himself, his theme devolved into madness when he screamed.

If anything, I think a lot of people missed the beginning, and keep playing what's in their head instead of watching it again. Apparently people don't think the Force needed more to bring 'balance'. I have no doubt Anakin will bring the balance.
I don't think this is their first mission, but it is for Finn (and maybe some others), because the First Order has been looking for other clues and taking over systems since its conception..rebuilding. Kylo has also been looking for Luke, but maybe they didn't waste a lot of resources on that.
Was that other droid hiding something else? Why wasn't he with his masters in the village?

So, this is actually phasma FN Corp division she personally oversees. It was all of their first mission. I think it mentions that in the comics about finna squad. It's like how they grouped clone troopers.

I think Kylo may have sensed something else, but wasn't quite sure - maybe the Force wasn't as strong as we hoped with this one, but it was pulling him in another direction...for now.

I love your detailed analyses! I want to add that the first time we see each of the three main characters in this film -- Finn, Kylo and Rey -- all of them are wearing masks. To me, I think it foreshadows the drastic changes each of them are meant to undergo; who they were when we first saw them will no longer be who they are by the end of the trilogy. What do you think? Do you have some kind of analysis on this too? :D

No wonder you like so much the introduction of this movie. It’s actually the introduction of a New Hope. Let’s count the similarities:
    1) Opening shot showing a big spaceship representing the bad guys power
    2) Bad guys arrive and storm a village/space ship.
    3) A member of the resistance (princes/pilot) haves vital information and seeing that he is not going to be able to escape he:
    4) trusts a droid with it.
    5) The main bad guy (covered in black) comes in when most of the fighting has finished
    6) Member of the resistance kills a last soldier (trooper next to Finn or the ‘set to stunt’ guy)
    7) The villain demonstrates his power stooping a shot (as an alternative, if CGI is just starting you can make him lift and strangle somebody).
    8) The member of the resistance is captured and taken for interrogation.
    9) Bad guy orders to kill the remaining survivors
The sequence lasts around 8/9 minutes and there are as many similarities as minutes lasts the sequence. Obviously there are some differences, but the similarities are too obvious…

Could you analyze the vader vs luke cloud city fight? Maybe not the whole thing because its so long. But i love how slow yet exciting it is. Luke is struggling as vader just toys with him. Id love to hear your thoughts.

Apparently being able to hold a laser blast for extended periods of time makes kylo weak in the force but somehow rey the 'marysue' is too overpowering despite having roughly equal force potential compared to kylo. SMH, some people these days can't seem to make up their mind and just go around trying to spread their anti-sjw propaganda even when its not there.

don't forget literally being able to stop your body from bleeding out on a dying planet in order to beat up a former stormtrooper and almost defeat an uninjured, rising force user while you internally juggle with an existential crisis that threatens to mentally break you for good, but yeah. so weak. -.-

We are living in a paranoid era were anything can be politic and any one will try to use anything while injecting their own political view...
Its just crazy, i cant connect with these people nor can i understand them... i simply dont see the point at becoming angry and making a big deal out of something trivial.
So called sjw or anti-sjw, same battle... same dumb rhetoric...
