- I use the free mobile app "insTuner" on the iPhone to tune my lyre harps. This chromatic tuner is super easy to use. Great for beginners. Here's a demonstration.
Keys to remember:
- To raise the pitch, tighten the string
- To lower the pitch, loosen the string

I've seen multiple people in the comment secotion on this channel ask "can you play this song on a seven string lyre?" The answer is yes. (I will be posting this comment on every video so everyone can see it).
I had the same problem so I tuned my lyre to be E F G A B C D so I'd be able to play *almost* any song on this channel. The only problem in tuning the lyre this way is that you can't play 2 of the same notes on the lyre on higher cords.
Example: (G G') When that happens just play the singular G note
if it looks like this: G G' -Just play the G note twice
It works but you may have to occasionally tune the cords for certain songs that are higher or lower pitched of your song. This way works (for most songs)and I know because I learned a few songs already!
Thank you my friend!
Very Helpful! Thank you!!
I love your videos so much, I’m getting a lyre soon and I can’t wait to follow along. Could I suggest a tutorial for Lugia’s song from Pokémon 2000?
Very nice. Ive been using 'Tuner Lite' for awhile now, but this seems like a pretty well put together app.
Tuner Lite has great reviews too. The UI looks simple and intuitive. Nice. There are so many tuner apps that it can be hard to pick the best one, haha.

THANKS!!!!
You're so welcome! :)
Looks like a great app to use. I have a guitar that I rarely play although I should, I was always a bit weary of tuning it too much after seeing my friend tune his guitar too hard and smack himself directly in the eyeball with the broken snapped string in a garage full of guys. 👁💥😖 He ended up being okay though after about an hour. 🤯 I like how the app tells you very precisely where the sound is. Very cool. Your explanation was perfect here. Thanks! When I pick up one of these instruments, I'll look into this program. 🙂 🎶
Omg, I wish it hadn't happened to your friend, and that it won't happen again. That was scary! I had a string broke on my lyre once. I was experimenting how far it could stretch. Luckily the only damage was to the string itself. If you tune the guitar, any app that shows 6 strings in the interface would be better. I use GuitarTuna (um... I just realize it's spelled like the fish). I'm relieved you found my explanation perfect. I was outside my comfort zone. In the second part of the video, I wasn't using a script. Normally I need a script or else I can't speak. So these English lessons I'm having are working, lol.
@@SamanthaonMars Guitar Tuna? Interesting....😁😄 Yeah my friend was fine and I think he learned his lesson. I broke my best friend's dad's guitar string too when I was a little kid. I saw his guitar and thought, what do these knobs do? I began turning them and all of a sudden a string snapped and I got scared so I ran home haha. Fun times! I'm glad you didn't get hurt while snapping the string. It can be dangerous if you're not careful. As of your English, it was perfect and taking a risk outside of the comfort zone is always something I respect. You did great my friend and indeed, the lessons are paying off. 🙂
Thank you so much. Love Ruthie
Thank you for the comment! I wish you a nice day! :)
Great app. You are speaking so effortlessly! Is english your second language? 😍
Yes, it is! My mother tongue is Cantonese. My second language is English. I also speak some Mandarin. Thank you for saying I speak effortlessly. ❤️ I'm not so good at speaking English without a script. This video is the first where I didn't write out a full script beforehand.
hi Can you please tell me how to change the strings?:)
I haven't tried changing strings myself. Perhaps this video from Aklot may help? ua-cam.com/video/NNUB2bngEfk/v-deo.html
question…
when i tune my lyre harp there are some strings (like the highest pitch string)that like revert, for example when i tune the highest pitched string (A) it will start at Ab then once i tune it, A but when i take the pick off the notch it goes down to Ab, i make sure that i take the pick off carefully and with no turn but it still reverts, do you know what it may be?
The hole in which the peg sits maybe too loose. Sharon from Learning the Lyre Harp made a video about how to fix it: ua-cam.com/video/40jQsL00tgg/v-deo.html . The principle is put a small amount of wood glue in the hole. Just to make it smaller, NOT to glue the peg in place. Hope it helps.
I don't normally respond with a comment on videos but I'm curious do you have a good Android recommendation one of similar format
Chroma is a nice app I've used that shows the octave numbers. At about 1 min 45 seconds into this video, I briefly showed this app: ua-cam.com/video/GkFsgHpadgg/v-deo.html .
Wait do if I use the app and play a G and get an c4 does that mean it’s totally off? 😭 also would that mean I have to tighten in to get to or losses it
Is it G5 or G4? The smaller the octave number, the higher the pitch.
On a 16-string deer lyre, G5 is the left-most string and the lowest. If it plays out as C4, this is too high and the string needs to be loosened.
If it's a G4 you're talking about, C4 is too low. You need to tighten the string.
Do you know of any good tuning apps on Android phone?
I have used Chroma
Hello Samantha, thanks for the info. I had a problem with the Deer lyre by aklot trying to tune It: Two of the strings broke and the rounded piece of the strings kept inside the whole on the bottom and I cannot take them out. Did you had that problem?
Hi. I'm sorry to hear about the issue. I personally didn't experience this problem, but I understand it can be frustrating. Would it help to use something narrow, like the blunt end of a needle, or the end of a string, to gently poke the round pieces out? When tuning, it helps to turn the tuning wrench slowly and make small adjustments at a time. I hope you can resolve the issue soon!
@@SamanthaonMars thank you so much for the answer! I solved the problem giving some soft hits from the front of the lyre. I changed the strings and now It goes perfectly. I wish to learn to play the lyre as you did, it's because of you and your reviews that I bought my lyre, and I love It 😍, cheers from Italy
@@manuelam.4374 I'm happy to hear that you solved the problem. Oh my, I'm honored to have played a part in your lyre journey, and I'm delighted that you're loving it. 🥰
Can you tell us how to do it on ANDROID?
Chroma is an Android app I've used. This app also shows the octave numbers. I talked a little in this video: ua-cam.com/video/GkFsgHpadgg/v-deo.html .
sorry, how old is that iphone?
It was an iPhone 11. The app works on newer phones too.
Hi , i get my lyra and start learning with u. Two questions.
1. I have very loud echo/delay its ok?
2. When i m tuning string for example E4, chroma app jumping from E3 to F3. So i should look on first sec on chroma ( when first sound is playing couse further is delay ?) Hope u understand me xD
Hi. Thank you for watching my videos!
1. I'm not sure what you mean by loud echo and delay. 😅 Do you mean when you play a string, the sound lasts a long time? How long it lasts depends on the design of the lyre. If you don't want the sound to play that long, you can mute the string by touching it with the soft part of the finger.
2. Sometimes tuners "jump" when the string is first hit. I would look for the stable sound after the first hit. If your string is E4 and the app jumped from E3 to F3, it seemed a very far range. I'm thinking if it was because the app was picking up background noise. Make sure the room is quiet when tuning.
(Hope my answer helps!! I don't know if I understand correctly. If you need anything else, please feel free to ask. 😃)
I have android and I didn't find it
The app shown in this video is only available on iOS. On Android, you may try Chroma or Pano Tuner. I've used them personally and found them user-friendly. Look up "chromatic tuner" on android app store for other similar options.
