How To Lengthen Front Jeans Pockets! (Quick Tutorial)

- Hello, my friends!
As promised in a previous video, let's lengthen those jeans pockets!
For some horrible reason, the pockets in women's jeans are often unusable. This is a quick & easy tutorial to lengthen your pockets using scrap fabric. You can make them as simple as I did here, or spend a bit more time to achieve a more finished look.
You will need two pieces of non-stretch fabric (quilting cotton works great) at least 1/2" wider than the pocket you want to alter.
The length will depend on the jeans you're working on. A good rule of thumb for me is a finished pocket size of 8" - 10" long. I find that I usually add around 4" in length to get the depth I am looking for. You'll want to double that number if you fold your fabric as I show in this tutorial.
This is an easy project to eyeball, so don't feel like it has to be perfect. These pockets are on the inside and no one will see them but you, though you may get asked where you found jeans with real pockets!
Let me know if you have any questions!
Supplies I love!

Thank you, you saved my son's yeans! Great idea. I was lost before I found your video ❤
I'm so happy about that tutorial. I hate the small pockets in my jeans. Heading to the sewing room with my jeans right now.
I'm pleased you found the tutorial useful. Happy altering!
why didn't I think of doing this. I HATE short pockets. I'll be heading to my machine with all my jeans. Thanks so much for this.
It's my pleasure! We all deserve better pockets. Happy sewing!
@@sewhookedjen I just wonder what they were thinking when they decided to make them worthless to us. It couldn't cost that much more to all that little bit of fabric.
Thank you, Jennifer, great tutorial as always!!!
My pleasure!
Terrific idea and tutorial! Thanks!
Thanks for watching and commenting. ♥️
Great tutorial. Thank you!!❤
My pleasure, I hope you find it very useful!
Thank you so much! You make this look simple and easy. I have been frustrated with shorts. Not only is it difficult to find an inseam of at least 10", the pockets are useless. I tried to lengthen a pocket last summer and I finagled a semblance of one, but a good workable solution escaped me. Now, if you can figure out how to make and insert a real pocket into short with fake welt pocket facades on the rear......you will be my hero!
Thank you! I have made an insert for a fake back pocket in a very similar way as I lengthen the front ones, but I did have to hand stitch it in place. Hope that helps!
@@sewhookedjen I may need pictures (with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back😄)
@claudiaglennan4627 I'll see what I can do. 😉

Ooo! Great idea. My son's work pants might need an upgrade!
THANK YOU!!! ❤❤❤~Annette
You're so welcome! Every time I mention that I do this to someone, they ask me how to do it so I figured it was time to share.
I was looking for a video like this! I absolutely loathe women's pockets in jeans! Iam a beginner on the sewing machine and was wondering if you could do a video on this showing the actual sewing part so I can follow along????
Hi and thanks for the comment! I don't currently have plans to make an extended version of this video, but if I acquire a pair of jeans that needs the pockets extended. I'll keep your suggestion in mind.
Thanks, very useful video. Yesterday, I just bought new jeans and today noticed that pockets are too small that even my Samsung doesn't fit into it.
Why didn’t you show how you got it into your sewing machine? Good tutorial, thanks, but now I have to keep looking.
Hi there! There no special trick or anything to stitch these little extensions up. Keep the jeans or other pants to the left of your machine and connect as shown. I have had a request for a longer tutorial but my left arm is currently in a splint so I'm not able to do it at the moment. I hope that helps.
