    Excellent instruction, as always, Mike. Glad you dispelled the nonsense notion of natural talent. Lost years of drum practice because of a bad experience of lessons where I picked up this attitude. Glad to understand now that you can do anything with dedication.

    I’m literally working on this tune now. I’ve been an on and off drummer for a long time and never mastered this pattern - I can play much harder grooves which is the crazy part. I’d always cheat it by doing a snare hit for the first bass drum note. This beat is all over the place - rock, hip hop etc. it’s a must know - no question about it. Great video.

    I was here 2 months ago shortly after buying my first drum kit. I felt like this was a little to advanced for a very new drummer. However I feel like the time is come to start practicing this.

    I just started playing drums about 2 weeks ago and I learned my first song and now I wanted to learn another one. I chose Creep and it looked kinda easy but when I started playing I realised how hard it is. This video is really helping I’m slowly getting into this

    Good stuff Mike! I've spent at least a month on this and it's still a bugger! I can do the kick by itself with the snare! But add the hi hat and it all goes to hell. I appreciate that it's not just me! My teachers also say to practice new material at "stupid slow" with a metronome. My comfort speed for this beat is around 60 - 65bpm. That's up from 55 last month! It's a great meditation to just play this that slow and really tune into the mechanics of what the body does and the feel of it. Thank again,
    Cheese might!

    Another great vid. I’ve recently been playing through walk this way by RunDMC and Aerosmith, it’s has that triple kick with a swing feel, I can play it fine with the kick and snare but as soon as I introduce my right hand on the hi-hat my brain & I have a massive falling out 🤣😂 -improving each day though, it’s played at around104bpm and I’m spot on at about 98, so not far to go LOL. The other thing I’ve found with that song is you have to be sharp with closing the hi-hat, if you hold that hi-hat open just a fraction too long it throws everything out. Amazing you also mentioned thinking something was wrong with the pedal as well haha, I adjusted mine so many times but then recently proved it was fine by sticking the metronome on and playing it fine without the hi-hat!

    • @chinatype
      @chinatype 2 роки тому +1

    people think that drum play seems easy. I thought so too. More you play more you realize how difficult the drum play is. It is like jumping into the ocean for fun and then start questioning myself if I truly could make it to the shore because it is very hard. Now I know what you are talking about. Important thing is not giving up. In order not to give up, if you can't make double base, just play with single and enjoy play and continue the practice if you want to. The key is having fun. It makes you back to the drum. one day your constant effort makes you to reach to the shore. For me, it takes 5 years to play this song. Still 80 percent.

    I started learning the drums a month ago and am practicing this beat. It seemed simple and yet is soooo tricky, that's pretty mind blowing ^^
    But yeah I figured I was not ready for it, but still I'll take it slow and practice, then practice some more and then start again! There are no shortcuts.
    (I will practice other things too of course!)
    Thanks for the video, very interesting and put things into perspective :)

    I've seen a few of your videos mike, great advice and instruction as ever. You're right It took me an absolute age to become proficient with doing this, and it happened best when I wasn't thinking about it if you know what I mean. Lights out by royal blood is another great song to help bass development. Ive resumed working on the technique to become more efficient as I notice after a long session my leg gets tired so I think I'm still tensing a bit without realising. Posture and seating position are also crucial as if they're not right they affect the kick and hihat more than the rest of the kit I find

      Hi Dave, GO SLOW. Say each individual moment, then play it - "Hi-hat with kick, hi-hat, hi-hat with snare, hi-hat, kick, hi-hat with kick etc. Do not go faster than you can do that at first. That's a great place to start, then build it bit-by-bit using slow-fast-slow. Remember you can do that when you're away from the kit too. Cheers!
