Loved GP since the late '70s, and am amazed by the quality of the songs that pop up on UA-cam, ones I hadn't heard, each performance featuring great songwriting, standout vocals and incredible musicianship: enduring quality. Wow.
God bless Fridays. They brought the Jam, Graham Parker, Split Enz, The Clash , The Boomtown Rats etc into my teenage rural living room every Friday night! Saturday Night Live may have been funnier but Fridays had better music.
Je ne connaissais pas Graham Parker, que j'ai découvert grâce à Éric Naulleau, sur le plateau d'On n'est pas couché, ce 19 décembre 2015. Je suis du Québec.
Huge respect for Mr Parker. Saw him (and The Rumour, of course) at the Perth Concert Hall in 1979. Awesome gig. Lots of people compare him to Elvis Costello, but while I'm a huge EC fan, live (in the day) there was no comparison. EC would dazzle you with lyrical brilliance, GP would go straight to biting your head off. :)
YES! I saw this live, Summer 1980, went out to the mall and bought the single a few days later w/ my meagre early teenage budget, haven't seen this in...augh: 29 years!
Those 3 guys jackson ,Parker and Costello took Rock And Roll as far as you can with intelligent, biting, gut level honest, and imaginative lyrics with sophisticated chord progressions.
Totally agree. Vastly underrated, swept aside because they didn't have the right "look". Easily as good as Elvis Costello, and The Rumour were better musically than the Attractions.
Who was playing keyboards on this? It can't be Bob Andrews unless he got a wig or hair transplants. (No disrespect to Mr. Andrews, who was a brilliant member of The Rumour).
Nicky Hopkins played piano on the album this clip was promoting, The Up Escalator, and Danny Federici played organ on it. Still wonder who played live keys?
From this, you'd be forgiven if you concluded he was an Elvis Costello wanabe. Actually, Parker was around long before Declan Patrick McMannus changed his name.
+Atomsk102 Never came across my mind until you mentioned it , and although some similarities Parker is very distinct to me and I cannot even picture Costello at all when I watch this
Not as great as I remembered it, probably something to do with the overly-loud less-than-essential cheesy guitar riff. Lyrically, though, great, thought-provoking stuff & a great song.
In a perfect world, Graham Parker would be as successful as Elvis Costello or Joe Jackson today. Severely underrated artist.
Love Gram Parker. Amazing. He just brings me back . Saw alot of bands but none like him
I was the assistant engineer on the mix of this record with Jimmy Iovine producing!
Was that Nicky Hopkins on keyboards in the video? I know that he replaced Bob Andrews when they recorded The Up Escalator...
The man was a God. Lyrically, he was ten miles over the head of his peers. This song sure as hell is as relevant today as it ever was...
Good memories. I remember wearing out my copy of The Up Escalator, back in the day!
Yup. It's as powerful as SOS,but like Joe Jackson's Beat Crazy, didn't have near the impact of his debut, though both should have!
I still have my vinyl copy of this and still pull it out from time to time. What a great song!
Best voice in rock. Friggin love Graham

This has been my cell phone ringtone for at least 10 years.

My favorite artist for nearly 30 years! Still going strong.
Grande Graham Parker!!!!!

You are right on, PO. Elvis was clever, Graham was lethal.

magnifique de simplicité & efficace!!!!hello to eric naulleau😊😊
My other favorite Graham Parker song! (The other being Endless Night...thanks!!!!!!!!!!!)
Nobody remembers the greatness of Graham Parker and the Rumour, especially with Brinsley Swartz on lead.
Every day : stupefaction !
Great song,love it.
love me some GP... great live version! nice to hear he recently reunited with the Rumour
WOW. The last time I heard this song was in 1982.
love this guy.
is this man a genius or what?
Yes,but then what is Elvis Costello? A mega genius perhaps?
Elvis was a bit dainty, GP kicked the table over.

Couldnt agree more instead of billboards its soaps and reality tv shows.the more things change the more they stay the same as the french say.
That's Nicky Hopkins on piano!
Can't get enough GP. Somebody load a video of 'Just Something You're Going Through'!

great stuff
I remember this now. He got out Costello'd by Elvis.
His 1990 -current output out-Parkers Costello.
This was from an episode of ABC's Fridays.
very cool
Adam Carolla brought me here, and I'm glad he did.
Great tune. Sounds like something Nick Lowe would have written back in the day.
One of the better moments, when they weren't trying to do comedy(yes, I know Michael Richards is an alumnus).
All of this easiness and convenience allows us more time to think. Why do think think we all take Zoloft?
This is 40!!!!!!!!!
Herman's Hermits?
Or is this playback?
@zulme best comment ever! (=
My brother would make fun of this music.
He's a boomer.
I've never expected him to understand Gen-x's music.
@zulme damn straight.
What is "a common US lifestyle"? Pray tell?

This tune was on "Squeezing Out Sparks".
that's Nicky Hopkins right there !
Talk about your legends!
Neasden's finest!

nervy, slightly strained, snarly, and very fresh....sorry I undid your thumbs up accidently...
OOOps... of course it's not! Just that his band sound so good that it could have been the record. The download is out-of-synch... that's all.
Not as great as I remembered it, probably something to do with the overly-loud less-than-essential cheesy guitar riff. Lyrically, though, great, thought-provoking stuff & a great song.
he's better to Bob Dylan to me, sorry but my say!
great song, but a bad recording, and its the only one.
So Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson aren't really that successful, are they? I mean, I've heard way more Steve Miller on the radio than all 3 combined.
