      Standards? The industry has standards?

    • @ReflectedMiles
      @ReflectedMiles Місяць тому +4

      That's the reason for the "third-party" structural engineering firm. To whatever extent they are actually using one that has licensed PE's assigned to the issue, the reason they would do so is because there are no in-house structural engineers to appeal to or work with. These units tend to be designed by CAD people working with product managers and Lippert or other suppliers are then contracted to build what the manufacturer wants, not what an engineer has specified. It is completely different than the automotive and other vehicle industries. The RV industry even refers to design-related employees as "engineer" who do not have engineering degrees and have not passed the professional boards / licensing requirements with the state. The states where the manufacturers are should really crack down on those types of practices, as should the FTC federally.

      Exactly. First, is "industry standards" for RVs even a thing? Ask them to point to the standards document. Second, are such nebulous, self-imposed "standards" sufficient to ensure quality and safety?

    • @ReflectedMiles

      @@tedwalford7615 They will say yes and point to the RVIA code. They would like for consumers to imagine that this has some relation to professional codes like those applied to residential construction (IRC). However, it would only be related if the IRC was controlled by homebuilders themselves and was stripped of anything that they really didn’t want to be required to do.

    “Overrating their quality” is so true! We can’t be so quick to think a manufacturer is the best - we’re seeing it with Brinkley; let the new kid prove himself.
    The thing that will be difficult is proving the defected frame under warranty is a result of the manufacturer and not the owner. This was purely a late response that I suspect will just be a headache.

    Jason I purchased a 2012 Open Range They had frame issues about that time also. Fortunately, I never experienced this issue, but some of our forum members did. The open Range forum was not owned or sponsored by Open Range.so it was easy to share information between members. I will say most members were happy but the ones who had frame issues were not. I said all of that to say Lippert supplied their frames and the welds that some of the members shared on the forum were really bad. In the trades world they would call them bubble gum or maybe popcorn. welds. I've seen Videos of frame fails that were blamed on the owner because of the hitch and they used or on unapproved sway bars. When you buy a camper and you find out that the hitch you purchased was not approved after you have a frame issue then I think it is still on the manufacturer for not issuing an approved list of aftermarket products.

    At a certain point, it becomes worthwhile to put a matchbox sized data logger on the chassis, and record any high-g events, that might reflect abuse from speeds and roads and overloading. Or, simple solid crush guages that would show and overstressed (shocked) frames.

    One of the questions that clearly needs to be asked is, who is design responsible? In most industries, the product owner is design responsible. If Lippert made the frame to a design they were given and the product was tested to those specifications then Grand Design is the design responsible party as they made the specifications. To many questions that I feel none of us will ever know the answers to.

    • @tedwalford7615
      @tedwalford7615 Місяць тому +1

      But GD should only design the RV and NOT specify the frame design. It's up to Lippert to take GD's RV design (including weights and their distributions and variances) and then ENGINEER a frame product that supports those design specs and maximums.

      @jeffbankslsi2545 Місяць тому +1

      @@tedwalford7615 In most cases that would be true if that is what they were hired for. But without the contract we do not know. All I know (which is not much) is that Lippert labels themselves as a "Manufacture" not as an "Engineering co.". GD by designing the RV designed the specifications unless Lippert was hired to do the engineering. Just as a frame of reference, If CAT, John Deere, GM or Ford design a copoint to fit on there product, they are design responsible. The only time the manufacture is liable is if they failed to meet the design specifications.

IMO yes the frames are not built correctly, but ive also noticed that every few years something happens and another manufacturer has problems with their product. Not surprised it a Lippert frame. I don’t have Grand Design, but my frame is a Lippert. They did a horrible job coating and painting it. If it wasn’t for the mechanic at my Dealership, my RV manufacturer said, they don’t warranty environmental problems (Rust). But you could absolutely clearly see where Lippert did not entirely coat and paint my frame. So the exposed non-coated frame rusted. I really thank the mechanic that wrote up my RV warranty . He blatantly said; you can see where the manufacturer missed coating my frame. It was written very well.
    That said, with other RV headaches, this my last RV. I just can’t trust the manufacturer. I just can’t trust if i will win the warranty battle. I will note, my adult children and relatives know to not buy nobody’s RV. Train, Plane Hotel is the way to go now. Manufacturing did this to themselves.
    I also tired of people fully blaming the assembly line technicians. No!!! It is Quality Control that lets the problems go by. And Quality Control is led by…….you guessed it, the upper management. Greed is their motivator.

    This kind of issue is NOT NEW. I was part of a frame issue class action lawsuit with Weekend Warrior/Zieman trailers back in the early 2000s. Court in California authorized a class settlement (against my input to the court), we were all supposed to take our trailers back to one of 2 Weekend Warrior factories for a 'prophylactic fix'. Less than a month before that was all supposed to start, the owner of Weekend Warrior, Mark Warmoth, liquidated the company, leaving thousands of us holding the bag with defective trailers. I sure hope Grand Design can't do what Mark Warmouth & Weekend Warrior were allowed to do. I ended up having to take a $10k loss to get rid of my defective trailer.

GD must communicate fully the anticipated load factors (including max allowable user content) to Lippert. Lippert must engineer to those factors for safety and reliability as an inviolable requirement, with cost a second consideration. Lippert should sell frames only where there is a legal promise by the RV builder to only use their frame for the originally-specified design, and that any change requires Lippert engineering approval and possible modification or redesign.

    Doubling the warranty length won't do much for many as GD and others have been blowing them off longer than that. The two main reasons they're offering this is to look... not so bad and to avoid the Fed' jumping in and mandating RV builders play by the same NHTSA rules as everyone else. If that happens you'll see Warren Buffet bail out and half the RV industry (that he controls) evaporate along with all the suppliers that continue to manufacture the same crappy parts they've been making for decades.

    Couple comments... First on the T-Mobile thing, I still question the morals of a company that tells it's customers "Here's a product that we are going to sell to you that in it's user agreement says you can't use the product in the way you intend to use it. However (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more!!) we'll just ignore that and let you use it that way!!" Then after letting you use it for a while they say "Oh by the way we're not wink, wink, nudge, nudging anymore so PAY UP!!!" This is the main reason we didn't go with T-Mobile because it just felt too bait and switch for us.
    Next on the comments from Mr. Lemonis... I'll preface by saying I've worked in the world of corporate video production for over 25 years now so that is what educates this next part of my comment. Did he ever actually answer any of the difficult questions that were posed to him? Or did he just use the tried and true media training tactic of "Bridging" to a fully prepared bucket of sunshine and rainbows to be applied with a fire hose to the rectal cavity of the audience? Because as soon as they start doing that you can turn your attention back to that chunk of chicken on your plate, that magically only has one bone in it, and is next to that ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes. Oh, and that roll you got is gonna need a lot of butter but unfortunately that butter dish is across the table in from one of the attendees that's fully buying into the full color spectrum enema. So dry bread for you amigo!
    Lastly, I am interested in hearing what the KOA CEO had to say. Looking forward to you coverage on that.
    Thanks again for a great and informative video!!

      I wouldn’t worry too much about a Lippert frame on a travel trailer. There just aren’t many alternatives. A travel trailer frame is pretty straightforward and flat. And you don’t know if the other manufacturer does a great job either. But travel trailer frames have few issues, and you’re going to have lots of other parts that are Lippert regardless.

Focus on build quality, bedding quality, storage quality…like cargo slides, independent suspension, better roofs!! These units experience an earthquake every time they go down the road so build quality should be #1.
    Then get dealers to realize that the good times are over and they are pricing most people out with their ridiculous prices.

    What complete BS ,it's frame failure back in the 80's through the early 2000's you never even heard of frame failures! Period. Lippert must insist GD provides full and honest design specs, including all load factors, against which Lippert (not GD) will design an ENGINEERED frame for that given RV design. GD should be prohibited from using that frame for any different RV design or usage (example: modifying s closet to accept a laundry machine) without a Lippert engineering review.

Your correct that GD is completely responsible as its their name on the product regardless who's component's they use . But Lippert frames are failing on travel trailers too. plus they don't stand behind their products , They want you to purchase new products from them . The amount of non-disclosure agreements they've pumped out the door to silence the problem is quite large. The amount of customers who went to the factory to get the 'bandaid' fix are seeing problems again. When you allegedly have a Grand Design dealership email a youtuber to say they contacted the mother ship to get a grip on the 'magnitude' of the problem, and then say they signed an NDA to not talk about the 'magnitude' of the problem? Well, that's a problem. They absolutely are hiding the actual issue. It speaks volumes about their only concerned with their trying to save face. They're masking their problems, Just ask Dustin Simpson at California RV Specialists. He currently has 9 Solitudes in his shop, not for frame flex, for FRAME CRACKS, that's right, you heard me.
