- There's nothing like a family cookout. Every now and then, plus ones are allowed and every now and then, the plus ones bring a dish that rivals that of the family. We invited some "family" and some "plus ones" over for a Cocoa Butter cookout to see if they can guess which dishes were brought by the plus ones.

If she’s from the Caribbean once it’s made from pasta it’s macaroni salad to us. I didn’t know pasta salad was a thing until now.

both are the same besides the different noodles used since macaroni is a type of pasta. there’s different ways to make macaroni/pasta salad and thats also where differences may lie to enhance the flavors of the different types of pasta whether its shells, rotini, penne, macaroni or elbow noodles.

The guy who made lemon pepper wings had a good idea but his execution was off. Marconi salad is traditional, and I could tell that the Caribbean girl having to guess that the salad had tuna and 'flavored mayonnaise' that she was not familiar with macaroni salad. My guess is she is thinking of other pasta salads, usually rainbow pasta is in the one which we use italian dressing. The macaroni salad was made correctly and looked good.

Yup. As soon as she mentioned the tri-color pasta I knew what she was thinking of. My mom makes a seafood salad using those noodles, but macaroni salad is different and the version they had actually looked really good!

I've actually never had macaroni salad with tuna and hard boiled eggs that chunky or at all actually. So maybe it depends on your location...
Yea I’m Caribbean too and we usually make macaroni salad with rainbow salad but we don’t add any Italian or any dressing to it … we usually add seasoning, peppers 🫑, onions and Mayo and sometimes a dash of vinegar for taste ☺️
I would definitely go for Antoinette and Anastasia's dishes every time the other ones a hard no! Kevin's wings look anaemic.

It rubbed me wrong when Antionette said other cultures don’t season food. Seasonings have such a long and interesting history and are important to many of our cultures. Being Latin and Native, trust me our food has great seasonings.
Very true...Hispanic/Latin dishes are highly seasoned. He didn't bring it at all. I just attribute it to him not visiting "El Barrio" more often, LOL!
She meant white ppl😒bcuz every blk person I know loves Latin/Asian food; especially Latin food bcuz of the flavor profiles are very familiar,and their both known for using tons of seasoning like we like it!
As a white person, I'm trying to not be offended, but saying "white people food is bland" is not really fair or nice. She simply hasn't run into people that cook like she likes it, but my family is from Europe like Denmark and Israel, we're very white, and I've made food passed down by my family for black/asian/hispanic/white friends and they loved it very much.

Maybe a passable hot dog or burger on the grill, but I’ve had plenty of different food from different cultures (blended family.) My white grandmother is the only white person I know that has thrown down in the kitchen. My white friends families, not so much. Had one white friend make me a sandwich. Good, great even, but how could you mess that up? Other one had his Afro-latina girlfriend teach him. I have no idea if my grandmother was even good before she got with my grandfather.

That rainbow pasta she’s talking about I’ve only seen in pasta salad (which is my absolute favorite), macaroni salad I’ve only seen with macaroni or people tryna be fancy and use shell pasta lol
I came to say the same thing. The rainbow pasta is usually used to make the pasta salad and the macaroni salad was made correctly because it was in fact "Macaroni" salad

Her Macaroni Salad looked bomb!!! Tuna, eggs, the right noodles, mayo, season, a little paprika for garnish and flavor 😋 👌🏽 😋 that was the only cookout food up there and I'm a black American.

If it's not smoked paprika, you did not taste paprika. We do not use rainbow pasta for tuna Mac, it's elbow or rotini pasta maybe even shells.
I watched a recipe video on UA-cam and the lady was using paprika and said it's basically for color cause you know it don't taste like nothing 😩😭🤣🤣🤣

The funniest part was when the girl heard the 'land, air, and sea' tacos, and automatically knew it was the +1 lolol. He tried though, and he was so sweet. I'm surprised nobody brought baked beans, or potato salad if it was gonna be cookout foods, but most people brought meat dishes, so that's probably why.

As a Black person who cannot cook, I definitely would have been voted as a +1. 😭 I didn't even learn how to cook until I was 24 living in South Korea, so the only dishes that I cook well are Korean dishes, American breakfast foods and vegan dishes. Do not ask me to make mac & cheese or wings. I have no clue. But definitely Anastasia's sauce style is what I'm used to doing myself.
You never learned how to cook Korean BBQ like Galbi or Bulgogi. I've never been to Korea but I've been lucky to learn from grandma just by watching her.

Yeah Korea had some awesome food. My wife doesn't cook so when people try my food they can't believe I made it. I made a vegan mac n cheese this week using cashews, nutritional yeast and canned pumpkin for the "cheese"
That macaroni salad looked perfect. You put spices and seasonings, chopped up hardboiled eggs, mayo, spicy mustard. I like to add chopped parsley, finely chopped onion and sometimes finely chopped celery after pulling off the strings for a little crunch. It's never white. It should have a yellow tint from the mustard. AA cookout macaroni salad.

None of these really seem like cookout foods except for the macaroni salad (which I would proudly devour 😋), but yea, spin the block and try this again!
I want to see ribs, chicken (grilled, smoked), baked beans, potato salad, macaroni, greens, corn bread, pasta salad.. cause I've never seen tacos.. chicken tenders.. or whatever type of wings homeboy made at the cookout 🤣 The jerk chicken gets a pass since it depends on who's cookout you're going too lol

Antoinette's dish made me drool! 🤤 It really looked like it tastes good! 😋 Especially the chicken.
At first, I thought Antoinette was being very harsh on other people's dishes but then I realized she KNOWS how the good food are and she voted them with good and fair notes (based on hers perception and "experience" - paraphrasing Asher here 😄).
Antoinette is funny, seems sure of herself and I loved her colorful hair. 💕
The plus ones were nice and you can tell that they are comfortable next to black people. They hold nothing back! LOL especially Anastacia. Asher seemed very polite.

Nice vid as usual. I know this is Cali (I'm from the Deep South), but to be honest, keep things simple for a cookout dish. The savory should be majority savory and sweet definitely sweet. Experiment flipping rarely go over well unless previously acknowledged as successful (nothing left from the last one & not in the trash). I agree with the winner, but intrigued by the Mac/pasta salad score. Run this back with a different group tho 👍🏿
When I heard cali, I said 😩 them different kinda black folks. 😭 all cookouts I been to are southern style. Quick easy foods that don’t take all day if u bringing a dish. And the hosts usually do the heavy cooking and bbq

Being caucasian, luckily food has always been my love language. My children are half Cambodian & my mother in law has taught me some unreal things in the kitchen. Once you season food the way they do, there is no turning back.

Listen, in Togo the chickens fly around. They don't go super long distance but they absolutely take flight and sleep up in trees even. My mom and I laugh about it all the time.

The problem here is the “cookout” is uniquely African American, no shade to other African cultures in the diaspora. The traditional menu is usually BBQ and other soul food dishes/desserts and that’s just that.

I'm a +1. I would bring the potato salad with the mayo/mustard base that had onions, pickles, celery, and hard-boiled eggs in it. Come to think of it, that's kinda what my macaroni salad would look like as well. I stopped making baked beans for others...Brown sugar, maple syrup, onions, and bacon chunks DO belong in baked beans and I will not be told otherwise.
Since it is a cookout, look for the thin bowl of pre-chilled food sitting in the disposable roasting pan full of ice...I like to fill tummies...not emergency rooms.
have you tried black olives in your potato salad? you make it so similar to my moms recipe, but we add black olives and it’s sooo bomb but idk everyone’s different i just grew up on olives being an important part in making potato and macaroni salad

It's kind of like needing bacon bits for a dish later, so you fry up a bunch of extra bacon at breakfast and put it out on a plate to cool. An hour later what started as almost of pound of bacon is now about right for a small baked potato..
