- In February 2020 I arrived in Dornbirn. I was really excited to get to know Austria to travel to learn and experience new things. Although the pandemic forced everyone to change their plans I still had a great time in Austria.
Dornbirn is a small cute town with fresh air mountain air. For the most part I was stuck inside but I didn't regret spending my time there. And to remember my half a year I wanted to make a video :))

Hey, I'm from Dornbirn currently studying computer science at FH Vorarlberg, just started the masters. It was really interesting to see Vorarlberg from the view of an exchange student. Really sad to hear that you came during covid. I started my studies during that year and it was quite tough... I did my exchange in Finland which was amazing and I made one of my best friends there who is also from Latvia, we immediately bonded over the shared flags :)

The story of the austrian flag is another one. It is said that after the battle of Akkon, Leopold the 5th of Austria was drenched in his enemies blood that after he removed his Sword belt his battle dress had the color of red-white-red
Latvian flag has similar story. Legend recounts the story of the mortally wounded chief of a Latvian tribe who was wrapped in a white sheet. The part of the sheet on which he was lying remained white, but the two edges were stained in his blood. During the next battle the bloodstained sheet was used as a flag. According to the legend this time the Latvian warriors were successful and drove the enemy away. Ever since then Latvian tribes have used these colours.🤓 Bloody blod in the deep history...
The real history of the flag is also quite nice and even makes the Austrian flag to the oldest symbol of sovereignity.
The full origin is unclear, but it was adopted by the Carinthians first, they inherited it to Styria, with which Austria merged together by signing the Georgenberg Pact (It determined that Styria and Austria are inseperable. This basically means they became one single entity, which also means that it would be better to call the country Austria-Styria from then on instead of just Austria, but that's just my opinion).

Vorarlberg or formerly "Vorderösterreich", was one of the first regions in which the Habsburg family ruled.
Vorarlberg is a part of Austria for a much longer time (since 1345) than Salzburg (since 1805), Tyrol (parts in 1369, unified since 1500), Innviertel (since 1779) and Burgenland (depending: either 1921, when it became the "Burgenland" or 1526, when western Hungary became part of Austria)

The Habsburgs have their humble origins in Switzerland and they expanded their territory pretty much in every direction (Vorderösterreich actually denotes everything west of Tyrol, including stretches of the Rhine, Alsace, mostly Swabian speaking regions, like Vorarlberg).
Over time they lost all of their western lands with the exception of Vorarlberg (mostly because nobody was interested in what was then a piss-poor backwater with the main export being child labor).
The Habsburgs were more successful with their eastern/south-eastern expansion but this also came to an end in 1918, when the German-speaking rest of their empire (well, a large part of it) formed modern Austria. Even Vorarlberg joined, but only after they've been told off by the Swiss, who were their first choice.
@@thesep1967 But still, the Babenberg family also wasn't Austrian, but Franconian, and the area of Austria where they first ruled where Slavic, with some Bavarian and Franconian collonies and especially the Bavarian language and culture was still pretty much the same as the Alemannic one during that time.
If Vorarlberg was a coincidence, then over half of Austria was one too.
Also don't forget that the small referendums within Austria after WW1 where all considered illegal and without any official checking mechanisms against manipulation. Upper Austria and Tyrol voted to join Bavaria and in Tyrol there also was the widespread idea of an independant Tyrol. Nevertheless after the austrian economy stabilized all these movements ceased to exist.
