      I saw this video on TikTok where the caption was lie on your resume or someone else will and actually get the job. I wouldn't promote blatantly lying on your resume without the skills to back up what you're saying but in today's market, telling white lies and adding fluff to your resume is essential to securing a job so long as you have the skills to back up those claims.

    I had 10 years of military service on my resume and I actually had an interviewer say she was worried about hiring someone who was "literally unable" to get fired from their previous job. What about the situation where your job title doesn't reflect the actual role, and you choose to use a more commonly recognized job title? For instance, if your official job title is "App Cons Dev 2," you might put "Software Engineer" on your resume because that’s what the role entails. However, I wouldn’t consider it appropriate for a junior developer to label themselves as a "Software Architect" on their resume.
    Employers may become skeptical if people continue to misuse job titles. Until 2024, I never had to defend myself over whether I lied on my resume or about being a U.S. citizen.
    Many don't understand why entry-level roles in the H-1B visa program often require ten years of experience. The law states that employers cannot fill these roles unless they demonstrate an inability to find an American candidate. They circumvent this by setting experience requirements for entry-level positions.
    One way to address this issue is by establishing a minimum salary for H-1B visa holders, which could help ensure fairer compensation for these workers. This was something Trump implemented during his first term. However, it now seems that Trump is leaning towards following Elon Musk's advice, making H-1B visas easier for employers to obtain.

    Most people don't realize that their job title that they are assigned by the company doesn't usually match what their job title is in their payroll systems. Companies play games with job titles for various reasons. Payroll job titles get reported to the government, not the job titles that the company tells you that you have. I've supported payroll systems at multiple companies. This is the norm. So if companies play fast and loose with job titles to manipulate reporting data to their benefit why shouldn't you too? What's good for the goose is also good for the gander.

    Redifining your CV/resume is one thing but what I'm absolutely loathing is this new trend of "send us a video of you" as part of the recruitment process or the "let's bombard you with nonsense tests without actually giving you a shot a an in person interview".

  • @graphicsguy03
    @graphicsguy03 15 днів тому +3

    Every position I've been hired into was was based on what the manager and the team was looking for not what the job title stated. Title was for instructional designer, however what they were looking for was a graphic designer who could also do 3D and video. The salary was the same for the ID position even though I hardly ever did anything related to the actual title. It's often times too much corporate red tape to make a new title for the backfill position for what that department actually needs, so you just continue to work under the guise of what the manager needed and the team needed and not what the company was advertising. This becomes a problem in the next 5 years working there because there is almost a guaranteed restructuring, change of management, ownership, etc, where you now report to someone who doesn't care who you are or what you actually did but you're just a title now. And now you look useless since you don't actually do what that title says. Or even worse, they decide to redefine the title that actually applied to what work you were already doing and now you have to match what their definition and understanding of it is. That's why for millennials and younger, titles, are junk, useless, not worth the prestige older generations used to consider them to be. For us, it's about the dollar amount, just like in the game of LIFE, i don't care if it's JR., SR., Adv., SR. ADV., it's all about the money. I don't care about the culture, it's all gaslighting. Corporations don't like it when you treat their pride and joy with the same condescension and disdain as they treat you.

    I think my title was changed so they could justify paying us less when they did a comp study based on our titles. I completely agree, putting what you did isn’t always what you got hired to based on pay and time or even what you are great in. If they can get more for less they will, there is nothing wrong with putting what you did especially if you do more than what you got hired for. I was very nervous of doing this, it felt wrong to me at first. I went to a very reputable marketing group to prep for looking after being at a place for 14 years, and they told me to do this among other things. Another note is to think about where you want to go strategically with your role and do some research, this will help with odd questions from hr during the weed out session.

    As someone who has 2 unique Job titles: Control Room Technician & Tenant Relations Manager I have to try to find the best closest match for them because most other businesses may classify those titles differently. Also when I began both of those jobs it wasn't under those titles, not a promotion and still the same job, but the requirement to have a title that better qualifies the role of the job was needed. Another example is when My workplace tried at splitting a job into 2 separate positions: Safety and Security Officer and separate them. The issue being it's a management position; people understand that for Safety Officer, but most Security guards are called Security Officer without it being managerial. A lot of people applied to it with the non-manager understanding and now they've recombined the job back.

    Hi. This is a very insightful video. I am on the job hunt for almost 6 months and this might be the core reason for not securing enough interviews.
    I have a BE plus an MBA in Ops & SCM. Got hired in a growing 3PL Logistics company. But the designation was sus from the beginning - "Asst. Manager"; but the pay I received was similar to an entry level position in a big MNC. Years passed and got promoted after 1.5 years later to "Operations Manager". Although the work was of a senior executive and had a small team under me, the pay was way above the salary from big MNCs for that senior role. In my opinion, the job title should have been "Senior Executive - Operations".
    One of my old colleagues said the same issue to me and he is unable to secure interviews too.
    Will this be a big hurdle for me to secure enough interviews for the same role I did? Getting a job title the other way around what was explained in the video? And will it be fine if I change the job title from Operations Manager to Senior Executive?
    If anyone can shed some light on this, it would be a great help for me. Thanks in advance.

There are a few times a year being available in person is very important. We work 2 days remote, 3 in person and have been bleeding staff because of the high cost of living and commute. Nowadays, it's just been highlighted because of the current dilemma and problems. It's really about adaptability.

    Recalling all the Y2K Projects being updated to maintenance and enhancement projects in 2001. It happens in other verb-age too, like IDE becoming PATA. OFC if you lie about something like a degree, they'll use that to insta fire you and deny you unemployment. Some might not even hire you unless you do lie, so they can do that and otherwise hold that over you.

    So what happens when say you get a job offer, and then you get that email from ADP. the one requesting a background check. They'll call and verify dates of employment, job titles, and if you're re-hirable (your mileage may vary depending on your state). What do you do when on your resume you were a "Senior" when you weren't a Senior? Now, I'm all for resumes being "Sales brochures", I just want to be clear when the bg check gets sent out you're covering all your bases. For the record I have issues with bg checks, but losing out on an offer would suck a lot in today's market.

      You just have to risk it. You have nothing to lose anything. Worse case scenario you’re back to square one. If you don’t lie you won’t get the interview to begin with 🙄

      I think they can only legally confirm dates of employment and if you're eligible for rehire. An HR person told me they don't check titles on background checks.

    • @bddaawwgg
      @bddaawwgg 19 днів тому

      @@jackieporteraz This is incorrect. It depends on the background check that was ordered, as well as the laws in your area. I had a BG check from ADP almost 5 years ago where they went pretty deep (just employment history, btw) and requested start/end dates, confirmed job titles matched and reason for leaving (or it could have been "eligibility for rehire"). Admittedly things change and may have changed since then.
      Easiest way to know is that when you fill out a BG form pay attention to what they ask you to fill out. If you have to put in start/end dates + job titles, phone numbers, etc. then they're 100% calling the company to confirm that info.

    I was mistakenly invited to a company meeting of managers and they were telling how to handle your employees payroll, etc. the literally mention the pay was based on the title and I had been given a weird title that doesn’t describe at all what I do. In a recent meeting with a manager I mentioned I wanted a title change.

    CHanging your job titles is perfectly fine, because most of the time your official HR job title is not the job title that your boss will put in your box on a hierarchy chart, which even then may not align to your actual job duties.

    Put the info of the job(s) you actually do, especially if you’re a person that takes on extra things and special project work. It’s more accurate for your skillsets and less boring for recruiters and/or potential clients. If you leave it out, you might miss opportunities because a potential employer might be looking for someone with experience that might be considered side-work. Thanks again Josh!

    If a company gives you a stupid job title like “Customer Experience Ninja” changing it to “Marketing Specialist” or “Customer Support Specialist” isn’t lying. It correcting your company’s stupidity. And if you’re doing some amount of management, adding that to the title isn’t lying.

  • @mrp898

    Your job evolves over time no matter what. Your title changes when HR decide they have the time and sign off from management to do it. It's is bullshit office politics and a power play by the company to extract more from you while not giving you a *fair* title change. Even if they agree you need a title change you will often hear them follow up with "but we will have to wait until next year to resolve that as we can't change titles mid-year, it can only be done when we do your performance review" 🙄

    If you're ever curious about how re-wording your resume can affect job perception, go look back at your current job listing's set of requirements/tasks (or find something similar) and compare that to what you ACTUALLY do on a day-to-day basis to determine for yourself if it's anywhere near the level of "sophistication" as it's made out to be

      That will almost never come up on a background check. They check licenses/schooling, dates of employment, credit, criminal, etc. They never ask a previous employer for a reference or use your job title. Job titles between employers aren't even 1:1 anyways.
