Every nurse must have and show these 6 Cs
    1. Compassion - be considerate, empathetic, good communicator (listen to patients and their relative)
    2. Care- show love and care about what you do. Listen to patients and their love ones and act on their needs - give them the care they need and do not IGNORE that's negligence !
    3. Commitment to provide care,go to work on time, team work with the MDT, good record keeping, show respect to all, do not waste or steal materials for personal -
    4. Competent to provide care through updates in knowledge and skills. Medical and nursing policies, protocols and tools keep changing , up date oneself to keep up.
5.Courage to challenge poor practice and speak up in a professional manner.Escalate when poor practice persist. DO NOT IGNORE !
    6. Communication- we must listen to our patients and their love ones and act on their needs! We must also communicate effectively with our colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team(MDT) for effective patient care

The healthcare system in Africa generally is far below the standard you would find in Sweden for instance. A lot of invested is needed in that regard by our leaders. The attitude of the healthcare staff is sometimes still somewhat paternalistic and leaves a lot to be desired. Thanks for this wonderful piece.

Disheartening to hear your experience. I think there are two sides of the story, nursing before and nursing now are different in terms of attitude. I decided to do nursing because i was inspired by the way my grandmother was cared for by nurses and doctors and their positive attitude towards us. I studied nursing in the Gambia and that was decades back, then there were materials ,lot of help from developed countries and organisations. Nurses were hard working and knowledgeable, wards rounds was a discussion and teaching session, and as a nurse you have to come prepared with knowledge as consultants would test you. There was no sex mixing on wards then. Having HUV and TB patients in same room was unheard of. Yes this is have deteriorated badly and may be staff morals we not uphold. We in the diaspora can help with initiatives like sponsorship projects e.g. uplifting ward ,material supplies, We should not wait for the government After all it's our people, its us, every little help.

    • @africandiaries

Wow thank you so much brother for sharing your experiences! And what a beautiful motivation. Yeah, definitely - by hearing that I can see that the health care system has changed... unfortunately!
And exactly as you said - we in the diaspora can aid the hospitals and not just wait for the government to do all of it... so true! It starts with every individual 😀 and together we can accomplish so much more

Thank you Mary I agree with some of the things you said,Some I don’t agree.I think Gambian Nurses are more knowledgeable in terms of practical nursing skills, yes their are unprofessional nurses and doctors that have no respect for their patients in The Gambia, the nurses are supposed to definitely question the decision of some doctors and they don’t at all. I myself was a nursing student at one time and I fought with one Dr who was one time director of medical services for him being rude to a patient and myself.

Healthcare work in Africa is pretty backward especially if you have been working in the west. I'm a dentist of 30 yrs trained and worked for a while in the US. I returned to Kenya and had to seriously adjust. People have no money, the government doesn't care either ( actually health care and the health ministry is the most stolen from portfolio of all the ministries.) Even in the private sector opening a clinic ( which I did) you have to serve the top 0.4% of people who have money and foreigners who care about teeth. I'm close to retiring mainly because it's too much work for very little return

In your third point re. Wastage of nursing materials, I want to say that you should put into practice what you have learnt in Sweden, and not to compromise your 'best practice', with the lack of, or limited resources in the Gambia. I know it is hard, but always put the patient fist and never try to 'cut corners' as the result maybe counter- productive

Hey fam... I understand what you mean, but some circumstances are really difficult, especially when the lack of resources is so apparent. So there needs to be a shift of mindset and you have to be able to adapt to the situation as much as possible

All you said is still true and if you explain to the staff something they don't listen

You will make a good health educator. Private health care systems are the best here, no one likes to go for government hospitals, bcs of the poor health care systems there. Brain drain is also an issue of its own here, plus in Africa at large, leaving us with less health profesionlas.

You said most of the Doctors were male and couldn't be questioned based on any medical decisions
That you were not comfortable with
My question to you Do you think that
Religion played a part in the Way the
Doctor's relate to the Nurses from their
Standard the man is in charge and his decision is
Best and Final. From what you describe the Head
Nurse had to go along with whatever and never
Seem to dare question the male
Doctor. Does Religion play a part
    Here where Women 's opinion
    Don't matter?

    • @africandiaries
      @africandiaries  3 роки тому

Hmmm I wouldn't say religion plays a big role here... since it is a hospital and not a religious setting. The doctors in general have the upper hand and the final decision, they all happened to be male when I was there. I'm sure it would have been the same if the doctors were female😄
