    I'm a truck mechanic, the way I set the small trailer wheel bearings is somewhat similar to the way I set them on a commercial truck.
    First step is to seat the bearing. Tighten with a socket and ratchet or torque wrench approximately 50ft lbs. Rotate the hub one full rotation and torque again. Do this twice.
    Second step is to back off the nut without moving the hub til the nut becomes loose. Approx. 1/8-1/4 turn counter clockwise.
    Third step is to tighten the nut back up finger tight. The nut must be backed off slightly and left with what is called endplay, this allows for thermal expansion as the wheel hub is heated going down the road.
    Check the bearing by spinning, the hub and feeling that it's smooth and not binding.
    Push in and hold then pull out and hold with your hands at 9-3 on the hub. You should not feel any movement or clunking.
    If you feel clunking the bearings are loose and need adjustment or replacement. The endplay will not typically be felt by hand.

    Anyone telling you that greasing through the zerks is "not good" is a clown, I just did all 4 of ours and the fresh grease was coming through the bearings just like when I hand pack them, literally no difference.
    FREE TIP: the opening of the channel lock should be facing the direction that you are turning them, this way the more pressure you put on the nut, the more the jaws clamp down tighter. Use them like you would a wrench, not across like you did they should be on the same plane as the nut is, flat.
    Overall you're doing great, just keep on working bro and don't give up ~much love ❤

      Good free tip! I was covering my eyes, trying not to look as he was using those channel locks so wrongly. Personally, I have a socket that fits the castle nut. But great save Hanks!

      Some of the zerk haters seem to think that people who use the zerks don't pack the bearings before assembly. Regular greasing via the zerk doesn't replace anything. All the zerk does is let you add grease in addition to the initial grease pack - which reduces the chance of a catastrophic failure before a scheduled rebuild.

    • @davidgates1122
      @davidgates1122 6 місяців тому

      I am a zerk hater for a good reason. The grease in the tubes used in grease guns appears to be formulated differently so that it can be pumped through the grease gun. No matter what brand of grease I buy, once I open that tube and the grease is exposed to air, the oil separates from the thickener. If I towed regularly like the Hanks, this would not be a problem because the spinning of the bearings would mix the oil back into the grease before there was too much separation. I stick with the grease that comes in the plastic tubs. Even a decade after opening it, it is still the same as the day I opened it.

      As always, read and comply with the manufacturer's instructions. Dexter advises that using the EZ Lube feature is not a substitute for removing, cleaning, inspecting and repacking the bearing sets. Do that at least every 12,000 miles or 12 months. This also allows verification that the bearings have not "spun" in the hubs. My 5th wheel had 3 of 4 bearings spin, found at the first service. Dealer replaced all 4 sets under warranty with new Timkens.

      This guy has it right. Set to the correct torque then back off to hand tight. It will allow the bearings to have the correct preload when they come up the operating temperature.

    • @stephenscering1776
      @stephenscering1776 6 місяців тому +10

      55lbs? I was ase certified mechanic and have never been told to torque cone style bearings! Tighten to snug while spinning the drum until it starts to drag,THEN back off to the next cotter pin slot! That's is the way to do it correctly! Or you can be on the side of the road with smoked bearings! Why would you ruin the bearings before even using them! I look forward to the idiots comments! ASE Certified! Not crackerjack box awarded!

    • @raycalandra1887
      @raycalandra1887 6 місяців тому +5

      @stephenscering1776 I was given those instructions from my RV Manufacturers service guide. Said that was the way you needed to preset the bearings without over torqueing them. That's what I did, and it worked just fine. My axles didn't have cotter pins. They use a retainer clip.

    Nice video. Made me laugh several times 😂😂
    Couple of small notes from a gearhead, and for your safety:
    1) adjust the channel licks correctly so you can use one hand, that’s how they are designed.
    2) jacking a wheel up should normally be done under the spring plate or as close to hub. Unless the frame of the trailer has specific points built into it for jacking, you’re risking bending or breaking the frame. Also, looked like your bottle jack was a little small. They make 12,000 lb and 15,000 lb bottle jacks; the ones in the truck are usually not sufficient for big ol trailers like yours.
    Stay safe and happy!
    Love the show!!

There are 5 more in progress, the one being built in Ocala, FL to open in 2026, will be the largest. We had another in KY open outside of Bowling Green,KY not as big as the one Richmond, KY

    When you use the grease fitting, always get the wheel of the ground and as you pump grease turn the wheel, this way the grease gets in even and not out on one side and push the rear seal out.
    Pump till the old grease comes out the front till you see fresh grease, 👍

Starting our travels in a 1966 fastback Mustang with everything we own as we traveled from fort to fort while I trained troops back in 1970. Check out the song I wrote "66 Mustang on Burlington Bill". Anyway, we finally ditched our Solitude after so many problems and a lack of backing from Grand Design when their top-level people defected and started Brinkley. We bought a Z-3100 Brinkley last year and just love it. Travel safe and keep up the good work! Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on You Tube.

Also, get a large crescent wrench as well as a 1/2" socket set that goes to 1 1/2". They will come in handy and you will not regret having them.

    When using your bottle jack, set the head just under your frame (still with some light showing through) by turning the head counter-clockwise so that you can extend it to that position by unscrewing it. Then you can jack the whole cylinder up. This allows you to preserve more range of jacking up the cylinder (therefore the frame) with the hydraulics.

    They are finally building a buck e here in Ohio. Believe it’s supposed to go in around Dayton. I’m looking forward to the trip from Findlay Ohio when it finally gets built.

    We were on vacation in the Outer Banks. We live just 40 minutes from Pigeon Forge. I was so bummed when I saw the dates for this rally. I know everyone had a great time. Can't hardly wait for next weeks video. Glad you got the trailer brakes fixed. I just take our travel trailer to have that done. God bless.

    Glad you listened and are addressing the issue but why didn't you use the torque wrench as you did on your wheel nuts? You are a trained professional, you have got this!

    The Buc-ees in Colorado is open, and supposedly it's the largest. It's just down the street from me, though I've only been there once. It's a little too crazy for me!!

    Put tire back on leave center cap and bearing buddy off spin tire while tightening nut for bearings as soon as tire just starts to slow because the nut is getting tighter go quarter turn more and lock it down then pull tire back off install bearing buddy and wheel center cap check everything after first 75-100 miles make sure all is good to go

    Trailer mechanic videos on youtube are a must watch on all his videos. Lisle bearing pack tool. Another car hauler mentioned about repacking every 10k miles. Perhaps all your trailer wheels need a repack

    In a past life as a hd mechanic, alot of the advice on here about wheel bearings is bang on! My method was similar, tighten, but use a proper socket or at least a crescent (adjustable) wrench, not slip joint pliers, then back it off, repeat, then once backed off for a second time, tighten the nut until a slight drag happens while spinning the drum. Done. This way the bearing has adequate contact and not too loose. With heat and cooling the adjustment may change too, becoming too loose. Over tightening creates too much friction and heat. Both cause premature wear of the bearing. I was also taught to hand roll grease into the rollers as even grease guns will not always coat every roller well enough. Once properly packed, a grease gun or a bearing buddy, a spring loaded grease pressure cap, is good.

    I was the one who said stop where you are and seat the bearings. Also said the grease zirk is not the way the lube the bearings. I saw you packed them buy hand and that is all you really neeed to do. Pumping the whole hub full not necessary. However If that is what you choose to do you must rotate the hub while pumping so it will go back through the inside bearing and not blow through the seal and foul the brakes. If you notice the brakes getting soft they are grease fouled and will need to be replaced again, sorry. If you have time just pull one all the way off see if grease came through, I would be surprised if it didn't I don't think you rotated it while pumping. By the way open the channel locks grab the nut from the side putting teath completely across the top and bottom of the nut, not straight form the front with just the tips.

    That Buc-ee's was a blast from the past year. It was our first one that we experienced! Gotta try the 3-meat bbq sandwich too, you'll love it. My wife gives me the same comments when I grab a basket, I tell her it's not a cart too!! She just rolls her eyes...

    I will use a torque wrench, Tighten the nut to about 20 ft lbs while turning it, the back it off to 1/4 turn on the nut. I believe Dexter torques it to 50ft lbs then backs it off.

    For safety you should really put a Jack stand under the axle or some leveling blocks. I wouldn’t trust just the bottle jack, in case something happens. You’re doing great!

    I been RVing since the 60's packing my own wheel bearing every year without a bearing failure. I remove both bearing and using solvents to completely clean the grease out of the bearings and hubs. I then look for any signs of wear and will replace them if there is a question. I hand pack both bearings, adding extra grease to the bearing surface and install new grease seal. I use a wrench to seat the bearings. I turn to it starts to bind and then back off to it spins freely and I can insert the carter ping. I place a little extra grease on the nut and reinstall the cap. I never used the grease gun to force clean my bearings. I glad you tighten the lugs to the proper tightness.
