While we were at Muscle Beach we also shot Hang For 100 Seconds, Win $100 on the Venice Beach RINGS! That video drops in just a few days. Do you think Joey was able to go all 100 seconds? I post all my meet-up video info here: instagram.com/nicksymmonds
Nice
When is the high five world record
Did u already come to san diego??
Hanging is a whole lot different than lifting... it's usually the smaller guys who do well at hanging, not so much for the big muscular guys though... I hope Joey surprises me and beats the clock...
Keep up the good work! ⚡
That guy who claimed he used to bench 410, but failed 225 almost certainly never pushed 410 at any point in his life.
you could tell by the form
Imagine if Nick had suggested he go for 315 instead of 225. The guy might have died.
Exactly what I thought lol. If you ever did 410, that woulda been easy regardless if its been a while.
If you can bench 410 at any time of your life, you'll always be able to do 225 regardless if you still lift or not
@@jackdowdell6684I agree, I used to bench 345 at 170 bw and took 6 months off lifting and was still able to lift 225 for 5 reps at 155 bw.
5:28 Haven't been to the gym for 4 months, but used to bench 410. Proceeds to fail at 225.
Total bs
Yeah, I lose 50% of my strength too after 16 weeks… What a wiener.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 what a loser that guy is
A little far out there to believe. Maybe 20lbs less but 200lbs less...there's something seriously wrong. I don't buy it.
He said way back so he probably was doing that like 10 yrs ago
That last dude did 315 close grip too! He's one of the only guys who really knew where he stood.
Had like 35 more lbs in him
When that last dude was asked how he could deadlift 500+ and said "eat more food" I knew immediately the guy was legit.
When you train a program you know exactly where you stand. After DL he was ready to just swap out bench for whatever accessory work he had planned. 😆
… I just realized I’ve been close gripping bench press my whole life, I looked at the form online just now… gonna try to pr tomorrow
@@prithvisukka9271 Close is easier on shoulders for long limbed people. Warm up well if you’re going to go wider or you could wind up with a stress reaction in the AC joint. Takes forever to heal.
Joey knows wtf he’s doing. As soon as he said “3” when you asked I think everyone who really lifts knows he meant 315. 3 means 3 plates 😂
5:37 Always that one Uncle that benched 4o5 back in the day😂
No way if he couldn’t even hit half that
Yeah
@@TrueFilter fact. My dad was a body builder max was 365, been 20 years since hitting the gym and he still got 265 barely. Ain’t no way this dude ever did anything over 3 plates. That 225 almost came up though so I’ll give ‘em that.

I was looking for this comment 😂
yea some dude said 410 and couldn't even do 200
@@left2dye750 he did say it was a long time ago and was almost over the hump on 225
bro what?? if you can bench your one rep max at any time then its not your best. strenght isnt like that.
Nick should be asking how much you think you can bench RIGHT NOW
@@ratonotota1508 he literally asked multiple people on here that question…and failing to bench 200 something after claiming you used to do 400+ proves my point entirely. So many peoples arms were shaking so hard just holding the weight they claimed they could do. No you can’t do your max every time but you can at least look like you lift within 25 pounds of what you are currently attempting.
Respect to guy who turned down 225$ at the beginning, he's been injured b4 and knows his limits.
I love how this challenge rewards the people who are humble, and honest about their capabilities, while those who exaggerate what they can do get jack squat.
What??? Only 1 person was completely out of reach of their weight they can bench press everybody else who failed could do it they were all just extremely fatigued
And Nick wasn't really fair making them do their max when they are this tired yet letting the last guy go 25 pounds below his max
@@tince5431 right. Yet for some reason he made that one guy attempt 200 even though he said his max was 180.

@@Viznc whats ur bodyweight, how long have you been training, how much did you start off benching and how much did you weigh?
I could bench 215 at 14
The 2 strongest 14 year olds at Bench I've ever seen were in my class. Phillip Reynia, who weighed 190lbs bench pressed 355 lbs at age 14 yrs 5 months, and Randall Whit, my other friend, he hit 335 lbs at body weight 180lbs and 14 yrs 3 months old. Who's the strongest boy you've ever seen?
This video was great to see. Really puts strength in perspective. With all these fitness influencers bench 3 plates plus, I was feeling hella weak with a PR of 2 plates but looks like 2 plates is on average too heavy for the average joe like me. Great stuff, Nick 💪
2 plates is a lot man. Also, lots of these influencers these days are on a bunch of weird shit. Do your own game man, set your own goals and watch your own progress. You got this!
Lifting and benching regularly are two different things. I lift but I never bench.
@@herrar6595 But if you lift regularly you still do different chest exercises that will affect your max bench though, like for instance i didnt bench for 6 months, all i did was dumbells incline bench and cables. When i tried benching again i had gone from a 175 to 185, so while that's not a huge progress in 6 months it's still progress in benchpress regardless of not benching once.
Makes me realize my 265 isn't as bad as I thought 😅
That's always a good initial goal. You can build more strength by doing slow eccentrics/pause reps, lockouts, negatives, weighted dips, strict OHP and push press, etc..All of it has carry over. 👍
10:03 that guy made 315 look so easy, that's beast mode after doing legs/compound lower body.
Not hard to do bench on leg day when you're a powerlifter with 5 min breaks in between
@@elitestar I don't know about powerlifting. I know that I work out religiously, and after burning myself out on a body part, all other body parts feel weaker until I have a long rest. Nobody is setting PR's doing bench after a full lower body workout, that's not how our physiology works. Your whole system pours resources into whatever your pushing, and while the muscle fibers in unused parts aren't then torn, the energy system of the body is still taxed.
9:58 those who dont lift have no idea how strong this guy is
Some of the others could’ve lifted theirs if they grabbed the bar closer.
@@cairopteraintetra3060 you clearly don't lift having a grip that close makes it harder because it makes you use your triceps more instead of.your chest

My max was 335 in my lifting days and even after a year off of the gym i can 2-3 rep 225 so that guy who said 410 was super cap to be struggling with 225 like that lol

"Oh yeah I TOTALLY used to be able to bench 410, don't you believe me?"
Need more people like Nick in the world out there bringing people together in a healthy way
Nice to see that most people were being pretty honest. It's's just that some folks didn't really know where their limits were. But really, a lot of people were actually aiming for their absolute max, and if you don't hit that just right you won't make it. So it's a tough challenge if done exactly as asked. Love this.
5:36 cmon bro.. there’s no reason to lie.. this man said 410 and couldn’t hit 225 lol.

3:08 Was not entirely fair. Guy said 180, and knew he couldn't do 200. Should have let him have the 180.
That’s what I’m thinking. If he’s adding 20 to that guy he should be adding to everyone else. And some people had to lift their PR even if they said they no longer could (like the marine). While others were allowed to lift less than their PR (Joey, Mr. “410”, and Gustav).
Yeah that one was kinda mean
Pretty petty of Nick to do that.

Enjoyed this video a lot more than some of the others, great idea!
Awesome video man. It really shows what achievable amongst the average population. I was starting to feel bad being able to accomplish slightly above 2 plates. Especially when I see athletes and influencers on social media pushing crazy weights. Hopefully one day I can reach 3 plates too.
From a functional point of view, if you can bench press your bodyweight for 10 times, you are perfectly fine. Anything beyond that is a waste of time.
@@sassuki Are you saying flipping over every car in the parking lot when the Jets can’t cover a 10 point spread is not “functional”? I disagree.
Nick back with another banger 🔥🔥
This video is such a confidence boost.
This is great, I just benched 225 the other day and felt like I was still low but this is a confidence boost. Also funny how some who lift lower look more muscular than others
Different focus in goals, bodybuilding doesn't need huge numbers in lbs, just reps
UA-cam gives a false view of lifters, most of them are on drugs unlike the average person, and they do it for a living.
Yeah, that's just because they diet harder so their muscles pop more, but they're clearly not as strong as they look. Notice the guy who looked "big" but not as ripped was the strongest one of all. That's typically the way it will be when it comes to the bench press. You can't really build a strong bench if you're in a calorie deficiency or just barely over maintenance. Unless you're on gear.
You can lift for strength or lift for muscle, not that funny
@@goldytwatus1674 That makes sense for more advanced lifters, but not novice or intermediate. As you build muscle, you're going to increase strength if you're doing the compound lifts.
9:00 *oh, he means 3 plates*
I'm 53 and work out once or twice a week, I weight 208 lbs at 5"11. I bench 225 3 or 4 reps usually depending on the day. I was feeling bad about myself as I haven't really progressed any over the past 6 months seeing the guys in the gym hit 315 but not so bad now after this video. I think we get a false sense of what is normal by only seeing the guys at the gym bench and not the average Joes. I started incline bench and doing 185 reps and I think that is helping my flat bench. Going to do 240 today and hopefully 250 next month :) Some day before I die, I want to hit 315....we'll see.

When it comes to the average guy off the street, you are a freak. Only 0.01% of the males on earth can bench 315lbs. Sounds crazy because we see dudes hit that all the time, but that's just in the small bubble of fitness enthusiasts. It's actually very rare.
