They Fixed Gotham Knights! DF Tech Re-Review - PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC Re-Tested!

- Lambasted at launch owing to its various tech problems - along with unflattering comparisons against Arkham Knight - Warner Bros' Gotham Knights didn't fare too well in the DF Tech Review. However, let's give credit where it's due. All versions of the game have been overhauled and there's a night and day improvement in the game up against the launch code. We don't often do re-reviews - we just don't have the time - but in the case of Gotham Knights, it's worth it.

Congrats to Gotham Knights for finally reaching a locked 30 fps on next gen consoles! And ONLY took 5 months too!
We can call it current gen now
Yes current gen. Next gen is a little way off yet.
Just shows you that current gen consoles are a few years old tech now and the cpus are the weak point yet again, i cant play games at 30fps its terrible, same old story get a pc if you want 60fps minimum.
@@TheJms1977 lol 85-90 percent of current gen games are 60fps already. Get your facts check. I'm pretty sure you don't have ps5/series X and ur pc is weak compared to those consoles 😂
@@goldensperm7182 Guess what Einstein I have both consoles and pc 👍🏻
Months after launch, we finally have a locked 30fps on current gen machines. 😊
yeah what a shame !
still 30fps... garbage! smh
truly current gen now
@@acct4600 I don't mind if it's 30fps, but if it looks like this and looks much worse than a 10 year old game, then yeah that sucks
@@acct4600 It's sarcasm. My sentence is self-explanatory with sarcasm throughout the entire sentence
When I saw this vid I thought they finally had a 60fps mode on consoles and i might try it out...but they went from 25fps to 30fps. Exciting.
I was hoping that was the case to, oh well another game I won't even bother with.
Hey, that’s a big improvement for them! It’s like when a 4 year old finally learns to ride their bike without training wheels. Be proud of them 😂😂😂
30fps is totally solid on these new consoles. I loved the DS remake in quality mode. Visuals were better than extra frames. DS and Deathloop have the smoothest 30fps ever seen.
I don't get how people can enjoy modern games at 30 fps. It takes away from any visual or graphical impressions I might have, because it just looks laggy.
@Ivan Aleksandar Tsanev I don't get it either. Bloodborne is my favorite game of all time, and I haven't played it in 2 years or more because 30fps. My eyes absolutely dispise it. It looks like a slideshow or a flip book
When I read "fixed" i assumed they make it run at 60fps. Well, seems I'll never touch this game 😂
Yeah that's like the baseline issue. They shouldnt even call it fixed until that's taken care of. The platforms arent the bottleneck anymore. If you can't get your games to ran at a min 60, you need fix your code.
Just play it on PC, I get 1080p with a 70-80 FPS average with only textures on low playing with a 10700/1660ti so you don’t need a monster to run it.
@@chop46878 yo this was really helpful lol a 1070 ti was on my watchlist but didn’t know whether to buy on console or pc.
@@jackjack121 it doesn’t help that they felt the need to implement ray-tracing which no doubt killed the performance. A 60FPS performance mode with no RT would’ve made sense considering thats what most fucking games do on this gen

I’m sure the 6 people still playing it will be happy

@@RyonMugen You can only play 2 player co-op not 4

30fps games are unacceptable these days imho
@@RetroChiZ the only game I played at 30fps in last 2 years was plague tale, but that's a much slower paced game and it was tolerable, this is a fast paced action game, 60fps or no buy
Yeah, 60fps should be the baseline for any of this latest generation of consoles, I love Elden Ring, but it's a shame it can't maintain a solid 60fps on any platform.
@@Albert_O_Balsam PC runs 60fps like a dream and my mid-high tier rig
@@Londiino The stuttering was never fixed on PC, so I believe you don’t notice the drops.
When I hear 30 fps and then you have Spider-Man remaster or Miles morales or Halo Infinite which similarly are all open world games run at 120hz make use of VRR and in the case of Spider-Man you have Ray tracing which runs at solid 60-90fps on the ps5 and a VRR tv then these developers at WB studios should be in absolute shame.
Halo infinite looks really mediocre tbh
I don't know if you noticed but those games you mentioned are first party titles, thus more budget and more resources from their respective consoles. They get more access to the tech of the system that's why they can achieve that performance.
@Golden Sperm except Halo, I agree. If you want a technically flawless first-party game on Xbox look at Gears 5.
@@goldensperm7182 That doesn't explain why Spider-Man runs great on PC while Gotham Knights doesn't.
@@goldensperm7182 Sorry but that makes no sense that having less of a budget (Warner Brothers may I add) means for a lesser frame rate, what?
I believe there is a big miss in this coverage in the way co-op was not tested, especially since this was sold as a co-op game. At least on PS5, if your co-op partner goes off on their own for a bit in the open world, creating some distance between the two players, the fps drops are still large and noticeable. This issue only resolves if the two players close their distance between each other.
Flashbacks to Minecraft on Xbox 360.... Oof.
It’s funny because the devs tried to make the case that they had to lock it at 30fps to give us an unteathered co-op experience. Maybe they should have just made it a single player game. Sounds like they weren’t able to deliver what they promised.
No one cares about a children's console mate. Grow up, get a real job, get off your console.
That or Ark 😆
Not only are you correct about co-op but they also seem to think that the batcycle is the fastest form of travel. Most of the heroic travel methods for the characters are faster than the batcycle. Use heroic travel to test streaming performance. More than a few times I'd grapple around too fast and cause the game to crash, which would never happen riding the batcylce.
Will definitely give it a try on steam sale. For like 5 bucks
It has recently been fully donated in the "Türkie-Syria earthquake relief bundle" : all profits went to charity!
As a result I expect technical support on this game will cease very very soon.
That is what it's worth and only for the "semi-hidden" bosses and Harley Quinn.
It’s really worth it even at $20-$30. Hopefully you’ll enjoy too. Really fun game
I don’t know if I’d play it even if it was for free, tbh. I like Digital Foundry’s breakdowns but this just looks like a drag to play.
I fully enjoyed the gameplay and atmosphere. Never once felt repetitive or bored.
Really appreciate you revisiting games after patches!
This game got a patch?
This is the way 🤜🤛
That motorcycle is doing a strong consistent 15mph
Reminds me how it was confirmed recently that in Dragon Age (I think?), sprinting on horse meant travelling at the exactly same speed as not sprinting, it just adjusted the camera FOV a bit and showed some "wind lines" (just like they are here) for an illusion of added speed.
@@Case_ Dude, that's actually hilarious...
@@TakumiJoyconBoyz Frankly, I suspect that's how quite a few open world games do it. Including this one, I suspect (but I need to verify it ;) ). Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.
No 60fps mode, no purchase from me. Drop this obsession with ray-tracing and 4K resolution as games can run at 1440p/1080p @ 60fps and you might have my money.
Unfortunately, the performance troubles are far from the only issues with the game. The gameplay and world are still wrought with problems that really shouldn’t be there considering the great job WB Montreal did with Arkham Origins nearly ten years ago.
They did a great job because they had a formula they basically copied from rocksteady. Who for some reason decided to destroy that formula for live service garbage now.
Internet commenters told me that anyone that says this game is bad never played it.
So _clearly_ you never played it
Origins was the last good Arkham game
This is and should have only been advertised as a coop game. It just doesn’t work if it’s not played that way.
@@bikechan9903 And clearly, you need higher standards for videogames.
Until it has 60 fps, it’s not fixed imo. 😂
Baffling how this game can’t even run at 60FPS lmao. I would be embarrassed if I were the developers.
An almost locked 30fps on console, well done guys that’s an instant buy now.
If it were previous gen it'd be fine, but 30fps locked for a current gen game that looks as average as this is criminally pathetic
Atleast 60 is mandatory
30fps is unplayable if one is used to >100fps…
@@elimin8tor I think he was being sarcastic…
I think starfield will be locked 30 fps but hopefully with a 60 fps mode too but then again Gotham knight won’t come close to the scale that starfield is and 30 fps is really unacceptable especially cause Gotham knight just looks so bland
Sucks that there is still no 60fps
Why would it matter
@@Youraveragegamer_97 Because 60fps is the norm for gaming anymore and it shows a lack of polish when your game in 2023 has a hard time even hitting 30fps
@@ravioli-bamboli I get that but how is performance gonna save a trash game? The dated graphics, the piss poor writing, the clunky and grindy gameplay? How much 60fps fix all of that
@@Youraveragegamer_97 it wouldn't but atleast if you're going to play a trash game play it on 60
Cause the developers are lazy.
OK, so I'm a bit baffled by this. In the video DF show footage of a 2060 Super achieving a near, not quite, 60fps with a Ryzen 3600. IMO, why can't this be achieved by the PS5 and Series X? Those consoles are arguable more powerful than a 2060 Super, with more pixel and texel throughput. I understand the 3700x is down clocked in the consoles, but it does have a 7th core to use for gaming.
Does this game use FSR on consoles? If it does and the best they can do is 30fps _almost_ then the issue is more than I was understanding. Unless the 16GB of memory on the current gen consoles is the issue, I don't understand how this came is not closer to 60fps, if that can be achieved with a 3600/2060 Super combo on PC.
Pretty sure the game's heavily single threaded which severely limits performance lol
Its running at 1440p on the 2060S, with DLSS balanced, which means lower than 1080p internal resolution. PS5 and Series X run at 4k, and even with DRS that is a much higher resolution. And, AFAIK, consoles have a performance mode for 60fps? I dont have the game but i think it has, without Raytracing of course. Still performance is bad on consoles.
@@sachin2ksports Ah, I did not even think about that, thanks for bringing that up. It certainly makes more sense in that light.
@@FerreiraFredes No perf mode on consoles for this game. Only 1 mode, which is the mode they give you, capped at drs 4K 30. You’d think they’d let you drop res to 1440p and/or disable RT creating a prefer perf mode for it. Alas.
@@stephenwakeman3074 Well then that sucks a lot and makes no sense. It should have a performance mode.
I was really hoping WB would've given Gotham Knights the Watch Dogs: Legion treatment. WDL launched at 30fps w/rt, then updated to run at 60fps minus rt. Looks and runs fine on PS5 too.
I'm still not holding my breath for GK. However, the addition of dynamic res is a solid first step. FSR could help too. If GK gets a solid 60fps mode I might look into it discounted or on PS+.
I'm almost certain that the reason the game doesn't have a 60fps is due to game design. I'm sure they were doing an interview and said that due to the way the physics/animations are calculated or something the game will always be locked to 30fps.
Ubisoft made watchdogs….
Gotta love when studios release betas just to get them out by some set time frame that corporate has decided upon. There's no way you don't notice performance issues like that on launch, and magically have a fix 5 months later.
Idk how you’re getting away with that display name of yours but I salute you sir, godspeed.🫡
I do wish games were actually finished and completed at launch, what a concept..
With games now it's best to wait 6 months to a year after launch before playing.
@@tm0054 The game will play better and will be cheaper
@@tm0054 Yep; there is pretty much no incentive these days for early buyers. All you have to do, is wait 6 months, and you'll get a game that's actually finished, and for much cheaper.
Not that the content warrants it anyway, but no 60fps performance mode on consoles.. no thanks.
Ridiculous that this game can’t pull that off.
It would be nice to see VRR implemented on console even if it only raised the FR to 40-45 fps
This game running in 30fps makes no sense
40fps would make a massive difference
The exact halfway point between 30 & 60fps when it comes to frame time
Still runs at 30fps no thanks
Doesn't really matter at this point. That's why I continue to scratch my head when these years-long projects release in a state that makes such an AWFUL first impression. You only get one chance and all that. It's too little too late and devs should not be let off the hook for releasing broken products. Just delay it or sell it at a discount. Full price for unfinished games has to stop.
It will only stop when sales stop. And there are still way too many people pre-ordering and buying unfinished games.
Can't blame only the devs though. Nowadays they have to cater to the whims of shareholders and the people actually paying the bills.
@@Gbriel1234567890 The people paying the bills for shareholders and devs are customers, the day customers stop buying broken releases is the day games will get better.

"First Impression" is exactly what came to mind when I finally got around to watching this video. I agree with you 100%. This situation is not something to celebrate.
what kind of settings do the consoles use, compared to the pc?
30fps, fixed....
It's still 30fps on console. So still a no there. I might give it a try on PC, again!
I wish you guys would do these with more games. There's a lot of games that get fixed after launch and are ignored
What's weird is that sometimes the game makes a drop in frames abd crashes when i'm playin with Knightwing only. I'm on Series X
If developers and publishers don't botch their releases then maybe they could enjoy the privilege of having fewer price cuts and discounts from seasonal sales.
Pretty certain it's publishers fault 99% of the time. "Think of the short term profits! We can not skip a year without a release or something, gotta get the game out now to get some money! Does not matter if the next game will fare poorly, we can blame this on the studio and not our shitty decisions!"
I fear what will become a standard is releasing a less than 100% game just to grab the cash, then deciding whether or not to bother correcting issues that shouldn't have existed in the first place based on sales.
Patching is the new dlc...
Did they fix the bug with fps dropping to around 2-5 when in a fight? I uninstalled the game after having this every so often in a fight. It got me killed each time unless I could escape from the area or I simply had to quickly do an alt+F4 to get out of the game.
I really dont get the 30fps. I just installed this on my old gaming pc and it runs at 1440p around 120fps all the time except for that start bike scene. Your telling me the series x and ps5 are not as good as my 5600xt?
Xbox Series and PS5 is not the problem the biggest problem why Gotham Knights still runs pretty bad on every platform is because they have Ray Tracing turned on by default and it's way too extremely demanding on GPU for this type of game but that's seriously impressive how you were able to render the PC version at 1440p and 120 FPS 😲
Danke! I got the PC Version recently from humble (earthquake relief) and I like the game so far. No issues. I assume it's post patch now

Yeah that's going to kind of be pointless on this game I'm pretty sure
neither this nor wild hearts are worth the price of entry. Wild Hearts in particular has balance, camera, and combat issues. There have been tons of glitches with the monsters not even triggering the traps you set.
Both games just feel like beta versions, even after all the patching.
Is there a mod to take away the hero lighting on pc?
idk but something feel off when using the bike, you feel like it has no weight and zéro sens/feel of speed

As a 30 yr DC fan and a casual gamer for the past 20 years, I'm glad I bought this when it went on sale for $28. Best money I've ever spent on a game. I enjoy it far more than God of War and I spent waaay more money on GoW. I'm addicted to patrolling Gotham. And the story, while not a new one, is fun and engaging. The detective work and puzzles are simple but fun. Great game overall if you just take it as what it is.

I’ve played the demo on ps5 and series x, and there’s a significant difference in resolution and performance. The resolution on PS5 is nowhere near as good as on series x

As someone who pre ordered this it’s ok. It’s not Arkham but it’s fun to just play plus they added content for free.
I don't get why X has to have more frame drops more often and even a lower resolution at some points. Folks on Neogaf and such sites blame it on S. Claiming that's what you get when you have to optimize for S too, but I wonder if that's the reason at all. I don't like it though.

Glad they fixed it so I didnt have to deal with the issues. I bought it on sale on Series X. It's more enjoyable than I thought considering all the negative I heard about it from a gameplay point of view.
I see a lot of hate towards it for the 30fps cap but I don't mind it. I have a 7900XTX in my PC but I still got it on console as this type of game I really don't enjoy sitting at my desk to play. Also I find sitting at TV distance I barely notice any graphical issues anyway besides framerate and frame time stuff.
Certainly not fixed on pc I bought it on steam Last Wednesday because it was on sale.. drops to the 50s in a few areas then other times it doesn't which I don't understand.. even inside buildings I was getting a locked 90fps then about 10 minutes later it would drop into the 50s in the same area.. would go away then start again so I don't know what's going on with that because usually in games the same area always drops frames but with this it changes
Its run 1080p locked 30 fps ?
Shame that now these minor improvements for game, which looks like a past gen title (exept RT reflections), especially compared to previous title in series (which is actually a game for past gen) now called "they fixed it".
Stable 30 instead of ~27 fps with uneven frame pacing is a day and night improvment now?
I really like and respect your work, everyone of you. And I understand and accept your statements about resolving most of critical issues in terms of stability (at least can't deny a math with your analysis), but looking at this level of graphics fidelity across almost all the game, even without AK comparisons, these framerate values on these hardware are just a joke.
There's no reason to call this game "fixed", it's still a rather low bar of quality, not to mention the rest of the game: its questionable plot, design and balance, adapted to the grinding, which does not give this game anything good for the player in the end, just necessity to farm for more numbers for slightly more damage numbers.
Dear game Devs. 30 fps on my Lg C1 oled looks like dog Sh@% Please makr 40fps minimum but otherwise stick to 60 otherwise I will never play your game. 30fps is horrible on regular LCD tv's but on oled its totally unplayable. any chance they patch 60 fps mode? It's taken them this long just to get stable 30 fps
As you can see in the PC analysis 60fps isn't possible on the weak CPU of the "next gen" consoles.
They could get it to 40s maybe, see a plague tale for example.

Yes, a ps5 can have struggles loading assets in. And I notice frame drops when going at high speeds
PS5 and Series S/X shouldn't have problems with pop in or loading assets. It's the fault of the devs not optimizing their games!
@@xenomorphlover I said last gen, not current gen. They were making identical as possible versions for 2 gens so they need gameplay parity. They only abandoned last gen towards the end of development and reworking the batcycle is probably harder than you think.
@@tomgames8616 I'm not talking about ps5.
If it's still not 60fps on PS5, I am not even trying it.
When everyone already covered re 4 remake demo, you are making vid on few months old game that no one cares. GG DF.
So when will they fix it 100% and re-release it on physical disc?
You have my highest respect for re-testing games after they have been patched! I see so many jumping on the hate waggon, collecting "likes" and never appreciate how much improvements have been made since.
I got this game with deluxe edition digitally at $35 and waiting for some patches and updates
Who would've thought they'd actually fix this?
Now if only they could make a PS5 refined version of:
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Batman: Arkham City
- Batman: Arkham Origins
- Batman: Arkham Knight
How does it play on steam deck now? Because that’s the only way I’ll consider playing it as the visuals don’t at all look next gen to me, not wasting time on an Xbox/ps5 version, especially if it can’t do 60fps
I am surprised Spider-Man can push 60 FPS and more but this game cannot !
30fps is not acceptable. End of story.
Shame on you Digital Foundry calling this thing "huge upgrade". Wake up already!
Got the game today, it's perfect on a 7900XT. Have already played for 5 hours.
