This Cheoy Lee 43 was abandoned behind a dock with a few feet of rainwater inside when the current owner bought her for dirt cheap. Since then he's rebuilt the big diesel engine, stripped off the teak decks, and refinished some wood, but there's still about 99% of the project left. If you're willing to rebuild a boat from the hull up this project might be for you, but if not I'd run away.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

Word of advice, if the deck feels a bit soft its best not to jump up and down on it as this often leads to the formation of a new hatch and quite bad bruising.

Nick Tombs Lol, I was thinking that too, it’s obviously soft, there’s no need to push your luck jumping on it. Jump on the solid ones to show how solid they are, not on the rotten ones to show how rotten.

Lmao! Yup...$500 for scrap metal weight! Wish owners understood this concept! At some point a boat is monetarily bankrupt of value typically because it was allowed to cruise right into a complete state of rot and disrepair and owners still expect to get 80% of the $ they paid. So the boat doesn't sell and rots away to become waste. Actually many people do this with lots of things! Particularly in America!

Other than re-coring the deck, it is not that bad assuming it is structurally sound otherwise. Put in some nice insulation to make it more livable. If you went wit a work boat finish on the interior with a lot of painted surfaces, vinyl planking and laminates instead of all that varnished wood, it wouldn't take too long or cost too much and be a lot brighter. It also gives you a blank page for making the interior to suit your lifestyle.

    • @DavidKirtley
      @DavidKirtley 4 роки тому

@Donald Mackay Yeah, they would be doing the interior from scratch. I follow several builds that are doing the same. It is not unheard of.

Owner rebuilt the engine himself......that's a minus, especially after seeing the rest of his workmanship which seems to consist of painting or varnishing over problems.

As a poor boy and a 61 year old, I would love to take one like this and put it on my property as a guest house. Remove all equipment required to go to sea and enjoy the novelty of a beautiful design. Sadly, as others have pointed out, this beauty has probably seen its last excursion. Very sad to see so many beautiful works of art fall into disrepair. If it was available for free, it may not be worth the transport fees. Thank you for the tour.

There's a reason ABYS requires qualifications and continuing courses to be NAMS or SAMS certified as a boat surveyor. I'm sure that MOST surveyors would have stepped on board, opened a couple of hatches and asked you 'so...what are they offering you to tow it out and scuttle it as a new reef foundation?' Seriously...pull the brite-work, yank that mast, buy a 1-inch bit for your drill, charge your 80 tanks, and make a 'diving-day' of it...because THIS WILL NEVER BE SEAWORTHY AGAIN!!!

I find these episodes really interesting! Like you say... if someone wants to put 5 -10 years of their spare time , and has alot of cash they want to throw at it now (and probably for the rest of the boats life); if they have a free place to work on it, free helpers- free stuff etc ect etc. Well, if you could get the boat for almost free and move it to your free location for free... I think you might have chance at making a boat someone would want to sail! Of course, after all that, and sailing it for a few years, it will be a 50 year old boat and you might have to, lol, give it away for FREE to get rid of it!

I don’t think they should focus on any specific price range, for every person looking for a cheap boat someone else is looking for an expensive boat and then there’s people like me who have no plans to buy a boat so I watch just to see the variety and I like seeing boats in all price ranges. I think variety is their best bet to get as many views as they can, that’s where they make their money, not actually selling boats.

IF you are an expert carpenter

IF you have land within 100 miles to store this boat on while working on it

Soft Decks doesn't exactly mean that it's rotted. You had mentioned that he removed the teak therefore taking away all of the structural integrity of the deck I have built a lot of boats in my 52 years. There's a reason that teak wood was on that deck. The reason being structural structural structural and at the same time aesthetically pleasing to the eye. So instead of advising someone to rip the whole deck off you should strip it down to bare material and doing a moisture test on it then recap it with a strong stable material such as teak wood. Chances are the subdeck that you were actually walking on is nothing more than woven roving fiberglass. You mentioned,There wouldn't have been thousands of holes in that deck. First of all you don't nail teak down ,it is put down with an adhesive compound.

Resurrecting old vessels seems very environmentally sensible though and I am sure some grasp of the pieces and parts make sense. Good luck with your search
After working on old cars I think the question is can you work on what’s needed here efficiently and do you enjoy it. Budgets in projects tend to go out the window quickly unless you are able to stick to a plan. Be prep’d to duck and run when something terrible turns up. Looks like a comfy place for folks in a budget
I love these smaller vessels and the access to the sport they give us but this project would take a lot of skills and time the might never come together in a usable boat.

I was going to say that too. You would really have to be an all around handyman with tons of time on your hands to take on that project. It can't me worth more than $5k or less. The labor to restore it will be worth $100k or more.

This is another example of a boat that will require way more investment to get it to marketable condition than it would ever be worth. These are what I call "negative value" boats. Stay away from these, regardless of how much DIY you feel you can apply.

I feel like this is wishful thinking and somewhat unrealistic goal. I would love for yall to get back at it and succeed in your dreams. I am rooting for you guys. Hopefully yall get back on the water soon.

I knew the guy that had that boat. He was handyman/boat fixer. Unfortunately he was away when the boat started taking on water. It sank taking his dog. It’s unfortunate that the Army Corps of Engineers doesn’t seem to handle marine navigation problems like that anymore. There’s an old houseboat now between King island and Paradise now. Derelict boats or turning up everywhere now because it cost so much to dispose of them, people just leave them.

Today if this boat was located in thailand pay 5k and drop 50k into it and she would be back to her full glory. Thailand labour and teak are cheap as chips. This kind of rebuild is not hard for these thai wood workers. The hull on this boat is 3 inches of fiberglass.

Thanks for the great video guys like the mixture of content from sailing and working on your boat ,to inspections on boats for sale ,which for me is the most interesting .This example of nautical vandalism isn't a project any sane person should consider undertaking ,sometimes things are to far gone ,and unless you're into sadomasochisitic behaviour ( not that there's anything wrong with that) it's time for a complete chemical contaminants shower ,and move on never looking back .Cheers from down under.
