  • A complete review of this 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing with the full Mercedes Racing history of how the W-194 Gullwing lead to The Greatest Sports Car Ever Built. With such racing icons as Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio piloting the famous 300 SLR too unprecedented success in competition with the Rudolf Uhlenhaut’s engineering brilliance saw these pure racecars take production form in the 300 SL “Gullwing” Coupe of 1954. Following the 300SLR’s racing achievements, Mercedes-Benz the inventor of the automobile, launched the most iconic car of all time, the 300 SL “Gullwing.” Instantly changing the game, shifting the paradigm in automotive design and performance forever.
As the fastest production car in the world upon its debut, the 300 SL was an exquisite reflection of Mercedes-Benz’s position at the pinnacle of the automotive space in the mid-1950s. The Gullwing is possibly the most recognizable Mercedes-Benz sports car ever made with its combination of cutting-edge racing-derived technology and captivating styling ensuring it a place among the motoring greats.
This 300SL Gullwing offered here for sale is truely an absolutely outstanding restored example. Previously part of a very prestigious West Coast collection housing some of the world’s most important pre and post war sports cars. Due to the previous owner’s extreme expectation for the highest quality, this 300SL was subject to a complete nut and bolt, no expense spared restoration by the experts at RM Auto Restoration who have won Best Of Show at Pebble Beach Concours on multiple occasions.
The complete body was stripped to bare metal and finished in beautiful “DB 218” Lindgrun Green. The interior was trimmed in stunning “1097” Crema leather interior and comes with two sets of seat cushions, green plaid or Crema leather with matching Lindgrun Green piping. As important as the overall quality of the restoration, this example still retains its numbers matching engine, transmission, and rear axle all of which have been rebuilt by noted 300SL expert Scott Grundfor. Additionally fitted with the optional chrome Rudge wheels and fitted luggage completes the styling to create one of the most unique and aesthetically pleasing 300SL’s we have laid our eyes on.
Since the restoration has been completed, it has been mostly shown and used only occasionally on the perfect sunny day. During its time post restoration, the previous owner entrusted the help of Mercedes Benz Classic for all normal service and maintenance needs. A large binder full of service receipts are included in the sale showing immense care taken by the previous ownership. Also included in the sale are photos of the restoration, service receipts from RM restoration, invoices from Scott Grundfor Company and more.
Documenting this special 300SL is the Mercedes-Benz Data Card as well as being listed in the Gullwing register. Brought to you by Legendary Motorcar.

This was the first production car ever in history to use fuel injection as well, before anything else ever did. It also had a top speed of over 150 mph back in a time when most cars could barely do 100 let alone 150.

Amazing history and review, I love that colour, it's so refreshing from all the silver ones. I would've paid for another colour, along with the Rudge wheels, cloth interior, and fitted luggage. I wonder if this 300SL was aluminum or steel? Yes, those vents did inspire GM, the crease on the 69 Camaro was inspired by the "eyebrows".

It literally doesn't get any better than that. Even though LHD hurts my brain I'd take one of these over any other car ever. The only thing more painful than not having one of these in my garage is they way you pronounce Mille Miglia 😉 Only teasing, great video.

Did the Gullwings have disc brakes? I thought they had drums, and the roadsters had disc. I am by no means a Mercedes historian, though. So please correct me if I am wrong.

@The Gary Klutt Podcast Thank you for your response and confirmation. That is an easy statement to mix up. I have been a huge fan of LMC since the days of the TV show on Speed Vision. I am sorry to have pointed this out, but I also feel honored to have received a response. I probably only knew of this fact from watching the 300 SL restoration videos. (Also, additionally, from something I read about the HUGE inboard drums on the 300 SLR with the air brake. Which is incredibly interesting, but I digress).
Cheers, and thank you for all of the great videos!

There is nothing new in their videos that isn't already known from other sources. The number of real restoration and old car experts can be counted on one hand and this father/son and their company don't come close. Ask yourself, they are located in Canada, but selling in USD with a Lancaster, NY address with Ohio titles? They are speculators, not true enthusiasts.
