  • I have used Canon cameras for many years in my life as a professional photographer. From the 35mm A1 to the latest DSLR's . Here I talk about one of my favorites, the Canon 5d Mark 3. I talk about my experiences of using this camera, show some of the photographs taken with it and talk about how it holds up in 2021.

I love my Canon 5D MK III. Yes it's old, it's noisy, it's a freaking dinasaur that but you know what, something about the color in this 5D mk III make it special. I used this camera for portraits and I can tell you, this camera still a beast even in 2021.

Long live the MK III! It’s amazing how many people are still 100% behind this amazing camera. I will never tire of the shutter sound.. not a click, more a clack!

After a 20 year hiatus, I need a basic DSLR for Speedotron Studio Portraits to replace my manual focus, 1 frame / 15 seconds, wait-three-days-for-film-developement Pentax 6x7. This 5Diii sounds fantastic.

After nearly 40 years as a photographer I can honestly say in 2012 barley one month after the 5d Mkiii was available I knew I had just got a classic workhorse. I have worked with loads of different set-ups, from 4/3rds to 8"x10" cameras, the 5Dmkiii is simply the best camera I have owned. I switched over to Canon from Olympus digital with the 5Dmkii but I wasn't fully happy until the Mkiii [the Mkii and its shutter sound was never confidence building :) ].
Now I only shoot fine art landscape and I have moved "up" to the 5dsr for the file size and detail, I will never part with my "baby". Everyone can jump on the mirrorless band wagon, I will just keep plugging along with my 5D's.
Thanks for a taking the time expressing a point of view on the merits of the classic DSLR's. It is refreshing to see a video that isn't all hype of new tech.

I'm always considering the 5D mk3 as an upgrade to the Mk2. I know what you mean when you mention shutter sound on the Mk2!… It sounds like an industrial sewing machine!… Having said that, the images off it are always amazing!

I bought a 5dIII last year with only 15,000 shutter clicks for about $500 usd. Paired with my 24-105 f4, this combo is quite a workhorse, and the total cost was under $1,000 USD. I HIGHLY recommend this set up for anybody at any level. I am a "focus-recompose" person, so I don't care about all the auto focus advances on the newer systems. I'm doing a week long shoot at a camp soon, and this will be my main camera and lens for the week.
    Thanks for posting!

I just had a friend give me a Canon EOS 5D MIII. He went to the mirrorless cameras and said I had helped him so much with various projects, that he wanted me to have it. Now, I'm sitting here with a manual and YT videos trying to figure out how to use it. I've been using the Sony NEX5N, and 4X4 view, so a bit of a learning curve for me. After watching your video, at least I know I'm not wasting my time trying to learn this new camera. Enjoyed the video very much!

I bought a second-hand one 6 months ago with only about 30,000 shots at an unbeatable price. Impeccable. I invested some more money in three new lenses, a wide-angle Zoom, and two fixed focal lengths. I got fed up with my 40D after so much use and it starts to feel tired. It has been in my possession for 14 years. The 5D mkiii is outstanding. Photography is a great passion of mine, and I am very enthusiastic. I am so satisfied.

I bought a Nikon D3500 when we went into lockdown last year; I got the photography bug and bought a second-hand 5D Mk III a couple of months ago.
It is an awesome camera. I just love using it. I paid a bit more than I wanted, simply because it had only 5000 shutter actuations. I have never spent so much time outside in nature. I'm a 59 year old novice but I'm enjoying every moment I spend photographing with my 5D. I can see why they are considered such a great camera.

Based partly on your review, yesterday, I bought my first full frame camera which is a Canon 5D Mark iii with a shutter count of only 8153. It came with a Canon 16-35 f/2.8 ii lens. The original owner bought both the camera and lens direct from Canon in 2015. It's such a thrill to shoot with this full frame camera and L type lens. Up to this point I've owned 4 different cropped Canon cameras. I'm still going to keep my Canon 7D Mark ii which I love. Thank you for your in depth review. It really helped me make up my mind.

I´m an amauter photografer, started with a T6 and the kit lens, then tried a hand full of lenses with it, 75-300 (crap), 50mm f1.8, 24mm f2.8, macro 60mm f2.8, sigma 100-400 C, and had a lot of fun with it but, something was missing after 32K clicks, I couldn´t get more of the camera... so Iwent to a used gear shop here in São Paulo, sold all the croped gear, got a 5D mark 3 and a 24-105 f4, kept the 50mm f1.8 and the sigma 100-400.
This video says it all. File size, robustness, useability, dinamic range, auto focus, ergonomics, everithing works in harmony. It is a pleasure to handle this body attached to any decent lens. I highly recommend the purchase of it for amauters who have learned the basics.

As 2022 came around I was trying figure out if I needed to upgrade, but after watching your video and several others, I have ultimately decided to continue using my dinosaur. Knowing that still in 2022, professionals like myself are still choosing to use their dino over newer cameras, helped me make my decision. @@RoyRiley Life is tough sometimes! I think of it like swimming in the ocean and sometimes there are these warm "bubbles" of water and sometimes there are cold ones, and often there is no discernable reason why. I have Crohn's disease and am going through a bit of a flare at the moment so I totally understand going through bad times!! With cameras: I bought the sx50HS for a trip a few years ago (German girl broke my heart don't ask! haha) as something that was portable. My current gf (Nora! - a good one (finally!)) has a 600D. I am wanting to get my first camera that I could start my business with essentially, doing weddings/gigs/music videos for friends. So that's what I'm looking at. Nora has 3 lenses and I'm quite used to Canon now so that's why I thought that I could get upgrade. I would some interviews and portrait photography too and maybe some sports photography so that's why I was thinking about the 5d III. But in the rabbit hole I have seen that some of the lenses might not actually be compatible. There are so many things to take into consideration and it's a bit of overwhelming. But when I was a kid, before I discovered drugs, sex and rock'n'roll (I mean psytrance) I wanted to be a filmmaker - and since sobering up it has been really cathartic to start picking up some of those old ambitions. My 20s felt like a war with myself and I'm just getting back on track. So this is the path I'm on, and really, your videos have been so fantastically helpful today. So I'm really glad that my comments could help you too somehow! I love that you have these semi viral videos and then you have vids that teach and give advice, reminds me of Spielberg when he would talk about doing one film to entertain and one to educate. They're really helpful, you get amazing results, love the photography and hungry to learn more, but the stories are great too. Starting a youtube channel this last year has been challenging, I know how it feels at times, but hang in there, amazing stuff, really, really appreciated! I on't know if you're planning on doing more tutorial videos, or even just like, breaking down the basics or building up to teaching and offering a paid course, I think it would be great. You don't take yourself too seriously and you're not shouting at the camera like some do, hope you keep it up! Cheers again. Adonis

I live in Vienna so I can't really film around the ground or do interviews which is something I want to do. I have worked in videography before for a mate in Tasmania filming weddings, really looking forward to getting back into it! Thanks for your messages and yeah hope my health will get back on track soon. all the best man! A livestream Q and A would be really cool "Snappy Saturday" or something haha I don't know. Livestreaming is a bit nerve wracking at first, but honestly, it so much better than editing videos, and it's nice to interact with your community, I use restream but you could also go for streamyard, really easy to set up, relatively cheap, and yeah, it would really be cool to see you do that and upload more often. I sold my sony a6500 for this in 2021. I’m so happy because I can trust my camera. Sony wasn’t professional that much, it has bad battery life, sensor temparature issues, digital viewfinder, really bad color processing. It was a camera that built by engineers for engineers, now I’m using a camera built by engineers for photographers. I can feel that Canon really thought about his product. Only disadvantage of Canon is its dinamic range, sony got lot of information in highlights, canon burn its image too earlier. Btw canon’s colordept (and sensor) is the best.

The idea is to capture the essence of the day and what happened. Without question and without reservation I use the 5DIII. It is solid as a rock. The events are inside, outside, and with varying lighting conditions. With the 5DIII I know I am going to get the job done. Hi. I have been taking photos since the early 1960s. My first camera was a Kodak Box Brownie (long since departed along with various other Kodak easy use cameras.) In the 1970s I graduated to a Canonet QL17 and then in the 80s and beyond to A1s and T90s. It took me a long time to go "digital" but, when I did, I started with an EOS 450D followed by a 7D (which I still use as a second body) and now my beloved and trusted 5D mk III. Now that I am 69 and retired, much as I would like to investigate new mirrorless technology - with the advantages for auto focusing etc. - I honestly cannot afford to make the transition. Over £4,000 for an R5 and equally eye watering prices for some of the lenses. Just because my 5D is old technology does not mean that it is not a great camera and it still takes fantastic photos. I hope to pick up some real bargains in lenses in future on the second hand market. Thank you for a very fair and honest review.

I actually had a 7D as my first Canon and bought a used 5D for much cheaper. Ended up selling the 7D since I loved the full frame. As one who has been shooting with film camera's for decades I was reluctant to go digital at all. However, no longer having a desire to continue souping my own film any longer I had to make the change. When I went digital, it was from Nikon (2 F2's, 1FTN, 1 Nikonos and 1 FM) to Canon and I wasn't quite satisfied with my initial foray. I came across a 5D MK III with an extremely low shutter count and a decent price and jumped on it. I was entirely happy with the camera and the images I could produce with it. It is my favorite camera and more than likely the last I will buy. I'm not fond of "post production" (I believe you either know what you just shot or you don't, I feel it is dishonest). But I am a dinosaur. Anyway, I think your assessment of the camera itself is spot on and fair.

If I had been sitting on the fence, your video would have convinced me to buy the Mark III, but I ordered a used one with a shutter count of 44,000 last month. Your count of 250, 000 gives me some hope! I just wish you would say more about this camera's video capabilities, as I bought it primarily for video, to make simple documentaries. I know it's only 2k, but I think that's more than enough for what I have in mind. But that dynamic range and ISO capability would be nice for stills too, as I'm rather into low light photography. It feels really solid, and durability is a crucial factor for me as a third world photographer. I'll probably be using this camera for five years or more. 23 megapixels in 2016? But we are always the losers in this megapixel game. By then, everyone would have a 40 or 50 megapixel camera. What would happen then to all those photos I made me with my 11 megapixel Nikon D90? Makes me feel so nostalgic for every image I made with my antique Canon FTb and Canon AE-1 using Fujifilm! I only wish I could use my manual lenses on this camera with the M42 mount. But it won't work with them, as my 3Ti does without any fuss. Anyway, thank you for the very informative video, look forward to more. Your photos are really nice, too.

Thank You! I hope the mk3 does you well for a good few years. Video is pretty basic by today’s standards but in my opinion more than good enough for most uses. I always like the video footage from the MK3 it has a nice soft feel that can always be sharpened a little in editing if you wish. Good luck with it. All the best. @@RoyRiley Roy thank you for your reply. I'm totally mystified as to why M42 mount and my screw mount lenses won't work on this camera. When I try, I get a message saying firmware upgrade needed. But firmware cannot be upgraded further. I contacted Amazon but they are at a loss, too. If I can solve this problem, I can do much much more esp, in low light as these lenses open up to F2, 1.8 etc. On the other hand, old Canon FD lenses with Photodiox adapter work, though with some loss of sharpness. What make of M42 mount do you use? By the way, where in Africa did you do this project? Your pictures show a lot of respect for your subjects, and one can see they are happy, which I think is the best reward for any photographer.

After a evil accident, someone tried to steal my 5D ii but dropped it with no insurance covering things like that, I've decided to get a 5D iii. Will damage my planned raodtrip this summer but, I hope it's worth it. Should be able to get one in good dcondition with low shutter less than 700 GBP here.

We're a couple of years on from this video now, but everything stated still stands. I use a 5Ds (5D mkIII with 50Mp). Seeing a clear viewfinder without electronics mucking about makes the clearly faster to use. I use it for Wildlife also, not only Studio. My son has an R7 and it is clearly very good, but I don't use 20fps, I don't seem to need eye tracking, (though I can se it's appeal and uses). I've just found this channel - it's really good. I agree with all that you say about the 5dIII. It's a superb camera, and like you say, it's the last of the 'basic' view bodies with no touch screen, flip screen etc. And I like that. It's my favourite body that I use for more static subjects (I use the 1DX for moving subjects like football and some wedding stuff), and it's the go to body along with a 24-105 for 90% of what I shoot. The 5Diii and the 24-105 is a reliable and wise pairing. There's also one thing that I've noticed which I really like about the 5Diii - it seems to resist the accumulation of dust on the sensor. Every other camera I have had and presently own seem to act as magnets for dust, which is a real pain. But the 5Diii has never ever needed a sensor clean in the years I've owned it. It's been to wet hot jungles of Borneo for 3 months, countless weddings, countless portrait shoots and is thoroughly reliable. I won't be going mirrorless while it still works for me!

I believe that a lot of people forget or underestimate the Canon 7D. Its autofocus array and exposure capabilities are beyond that of the 5D mk ii which was released at the same time as the 7D (2009). Frame rate is faster than both 5D mk ii and mk iii. Where it falls down is that it is a 1.6 crop sensor camera (although this allows the use of the EFS lenses), a factor which hurts its ability to shoot low light images without noise. Being a sports and wildlife camera (see Tony and Chelsea Northrup's posts on youtube), it has its place. As such, I would place the 7D smack in the middle of the mkii and mkiii for performance. Its stainless steel frame and magnesium body make it indestructible (almost). Nevertheless, my next camera will be the mkiii. It is the natural progression for a person on a budget, even if it is only about 4 years younger than the 7D. My L lenses will work wonders on this full frame (the first I have bought).

I agree with all your points but have to add to your comment "last of the basic DSLRs" which in many ways is a GREAT thing if you shoot stills. I was one of the "foolish people" that bought a 5Ds and 5DsR when they arrived in 2015-ish? I kept one of my mk3's "just to be sure". After a couple months I sold the mk3 and still have and use my 5Ds and 5DsR cameras a lot. In many ways.I like those cameras more than my new RF camera (which somehow I tend to use only when I need video due to DPAF etc).
Personally I define the 5Ds and 5DsR as the pinnacle of DSLR cameras and surprisingly are on my list of favorite cameras I've ever owned and used. Here's my personal findings (realize I shot 35mm, MF, and large format film for a two decades prior to digital... then I was an early MF digital user as well).
    - The 5Ds/5DsR AF system seem to be improved in no insignificant way to the 5D3, I noticed a bigger difference than the 5Ds to 5D4. I think all of the stuff they claimed for the 5D4 was mostly done in the 5Ds (with the possible exception of the very minor wider spacing/coverage which is hardly noticeable)
    - The 5Ds rear screen is great but not fiddly with touch controls etc... but very accurate and beautiful to look at.
    - The 5Ds is an idiotically stable camera in terms of very very little vibration causing blur. This should have headlined Canon's marketing even though it doesn't sound sexy. This camera is way better than the 5D3 and every Nikon (D800/D810/D850) AND most reflex medium format cameras in terms of controlling vibration throughout the shutter speed range. I've helped/diagnosed countless other photographers sharpness issues on D8XX camera. All of them were vibration related (when mounted on tripods etc). Every iteration of the D8XX camera added extra bullshit in terms of first curtain electronic shutters with LV... all sorts of bullshit delays in combination with that to sort through, etc, etc. Without fail the D8XX (and many many other cameras) were a royal pain in the ass to get sharp pictures at various shutter speeds -- including what wouldn't be considered "slow" like 1/60th 1/125th etc. The 5Ds is almost magical in it's lack of vibration and how solid it is.
    - The 5Ds cameras in NO WAY are harder to shoot hand held, nor visibly noisier than the 5D3 (and maybe the 5D4 under 99% of real world shooting). at the same output resolution the 5Ds cameras ALWAYS look better and sharper than the 5D3's AND show no more noise at the same enlargement sizes... probably less.
    - It's a myth that you need all new lenses with the 5Ds, in fact those cameras make every lens you have BETTER. Sure at idiotic magnifications some lenses are not as good as you thought they were at 12mpix but every single solitary picture made with the 5Ds with every lens makes a lot more detail than that same lens on the 5D3... Look at it as optimizing whatever lenses you have. Sure better/newer/sharper lenses will give you even more but the idiotic internet myth that your pictures will be worse with 5Ds with the same lenses is just foolish, they will have more detail than before. Same goes for hand held at the same magnification... more resolution will allow you to see motion blur more clearly IF you go with larger images sizes for your output but at the same output size = no difference.
    - Overall I think the 5Ds and 5DsR were producing better output than my MF system with the TS-E lenses in the equation because those lenses are SOOO0OO good.
Even today the 5Ds and 5DsR are a steal at a bit over $1000. In fact there are many many scenarios where I much prefer the optical viewfinder to an EVF. Haptics, eye comfort, etc drastically affect the pictures you make. EVF's absolutely suck in bright or very dim light (dim light because of how bright they are compared to ambient conditions). A dim studio using strobes is a perfect example, especially shooting people/fashion where the constant pupil dilation from ambient to getting blasted with an EVF is extremely fatiguing... what's more important, "seeing the exposure" which you can't with strobes over and over and over or having fresh eyes to see expressions and gestures where it's very comfortable over long periods of time??
Different strokes for different folks but if you live between ISO 100 and ISO 1600 you owe it to yourself to consider a 5Ds or 5DsR at the idiotically low prices they can be had. In my mind the pinnacle of DSLR's if you shoot still under 99.99% of the circumstances like to actually make a decent photograph.

    • @robertboyer5926
      @robertboyer5926 3 роки тому +1

@@MichaelCTruth I may be the absolutely wrong person to ask about this due to:
      - I don't shoot events professionally and when I MUST do it I absolutely make sure I am not the only shooter, like when friends/family ask me to...
      - The majority of my life I shot film both as a kid, and professionally, I still do so a bit of noise doesn't bother me in the least, in fact for a lot of my personal work I actually ADD GRAIN.
      - To my eyes the amount of noise with the 5DsR is about equivalent to a 5D4 at the same print size/display size. In other words yes the 5Ds/5DsR has more noise than the 5D4 but it's smaller at any given print size so to me it's about the same as I mostly care about prints/pictures on paper, which also pretty much levels the playing field regarding noise across most cameras except at idiotically large prints viewed close up.
      - If you tend to push your shadows more than a stop you will absolutely see the 5Ds does not hold up as well as a 5D4 but again for me, I rarely do push things more than a stop. I am not a landscape guy trying to get away with no graduated neutral density filters (which to me still look like dog shit in the shadows when pushed a lot... look ma, no noise but it looks like garbage anyway.
Last but not least I tend to sort of shoot a lot like I did on film so in dim light I shoot at very very wide apertures like 1.4 and 1.2 and typically at 400 or 800 maybe, 1600 a stretch. At 3200 and 6400 I am fine with it looking like pushed film which most cameras do anyway unless you crank the shadows up a bunch (assuming you didn't blow a bunch of highlights) which to me kind of looks unnatural anyway and all cameras have shit dynamic range after about 400 or 800...
I guess in other words, if you shoot still pictures and never use more than 5 frames/second and work traditionally it's a steal at about $1000 and I personally have no reason to replace mine (yes, I have new mirrorless canons but don't love using them outdoors or in very dark environments -- like a studio), in those conditions I much prefer my OVF. I use my mirrorless cameras mostly for "work" or where I am shooting tethered anyway (product shots, tilt-shift, etc where things aren't so much viewfinder centric) or when I do video because I must (not my favorite endeavor)
