      Great, but how many of them show up with top of the line gear? Let me rephrase it. How many have shown up with just their iPhones and done the entire photo shoot using that?
      Sure you book based on talent and output, not gear. But it probably just so happens that the talent you book is also using the top of the line gear.

    • @6minutemedia543
      @6minutemedia543 2 місяці тому +3

      @@RedShiftedDollar I discuss what the shoot entails and any specifics I am looking for. The choice of kit is largely down to the DP. Most busy crew have their favourite kit collected over many years. Anyone turning up with "top of the line" shiny new toys would be suspect and far from the norm.

    • @RedShiftedDollar
      @RedShiftedDollar 2 місяці тому

      @@6minutemedia543 Did anyone ever show up with just their iphone? To me that seems like the most accessible high quality camera around. And it uses Sony's top of the line pixel technology that they don't even use in most of their professional cameras. Most of the photographers likely had an iphone with them while doing their shoots. So why didn't they just use that?
      I'm sure it's because they want their work to be the best it can be. And while they could use the iphone and produce surprisingly good results, they know the results they can achieve with their high-end camera gear are better.
      But as someone who judges the work without having to care about how it is produced, how can you know which portion of quality is due to the photographer and which is due to the camera and lens hardware?
      The truth is that the gear matters a lot. Otherwise everybody would just use iphones.

    I always tell people that a “better” camera just has better technology that makes it easier to get a good photo (especially in certain genres). BUT I also highlight that sometimes struggling a little slows you down, and helps you to engage your creativity. It partially explains why some people are going back to film photography.

    Good, useful advice as usual. I use an old Mamiya 645 bellows with tilt/shift and their 80mm f/4 macro for product photos. They're available for around $200 at the auction site, and can be adapted to more or less anything. It's the one for the manual focus cameras. The newer one for the AFD models lacks tilt and/or shift (never remember which one).

    The warmer colours of B, give away the answer. If you are a canon user you see it at once. I noticed the plinth only when you mentioned it. I could see the 2 photos were not identical in framing/composition, but I did not notice the top of the plinth right from the start. I thought - actually I was expecting, that you would have mounted the canon on the cambo and take the same shot. May be this would have salvaged the almost blown out highlights on the plinth, on the canon shot. Anyway, you make a point, industry standards have not changed and yes old cameras can still be usable, but... The cambo (or any other similar system) is amazing, I think all product photographers should have something like that. Great work !

    For the record, not only do I agree with you, but the highest paying thing I ever shot was done on a small Fuji camera, albeit with a Leitz lens. Still, the typical blue violet cast of Fuji was still apparent. And nobody cared. Usually moderately paying work, this job was initially big and expensive. In spite of that, the actress sent me 30 year old Scotch and extra money after the shoot. Love that $ 200 Fuji!

    I like the 5D series they each kind of have their own look. I do think the colors of the 5Dsr are very nice indeed, however, really to get the benefit of that camera one must take good care to be quite steady and think a bit about the best F-strop for the resolution. I think if you get sloppy with it, you may as well stick to the 20 megapixel sensor or even less. For me at least, I like the idea of having all kinds of pixels for cropping, but if I am honest, I don't think I ever really thought that more than 16 megapixels are usually ever needed, assuming you frame it right. Unfortunately the Canon mirrorless are, many of them, too pricey, although the R6 does not seem too bad, but then the glass is very expensive - I already have some nice EF L glass and I really do not want to buy things over.
    Perhaps I may buy used some day. Nice video, too honest, you will never make it as a politician, especially nowadays. I do like the Fuji line for the smaller sensor cameras, nice glass, and some rangefinder body type love. I like the finder on the left. Just got the new x100VI, I have the original x100 and have been wanting better focus speeds and a tad more resolution, we shall see how the new version does. I wish it were not so popular though, it took 6 months to get my order, I came close to cancelling, you know the clowns did not provide a hard copy manual for it. The PDF is a million pages and a pain. Fortunately, I have several charges and batteries already.
    Best wishes, God bless!

    Well, from the perspective I would guess that A is the old Canon DSLR, and B is the Fuji/Cambo combination. Colors look different, but are not good indicator (I actually somewhat prefer A, even though B might be the more "natural" look for the green). Edit: Well, I was wrong. But at least I liked the Fuji colors more … ;-)

    I used Pentax K-5 introduced in 2010 for all the work untill 2020 doing over 130k shots. Then I replaced it by K-3 introduced in 2013 :D And it does the job well till this day. It has better dynamic range than that 5DII..
    Also added 2nd hand Oly EM5III recently.. also nice tool.
    Camera body is just cheap tool when compared to investments in lenses. And lenses can serve even for decades.

    I use my RB67 lenses... on my RB. Have upgraded to the KL lenses in many cases that are similar to RZ lenses. I am a portrait guy so some lenses like my zeiss 100 mm makro planar can be too sharp for less than perfect skin. My "new" camera, an f6 just got back from nikon for repair and cla. I primarily use my d850 for film scanning. I can easily print 24x36 on my printer with the RB67 and 20" with the mamiya 645 pro tl.

    Can you put the lens and all the bellows etc from the fuji on the canon so both images are taken with that set up, if so that would be a good comparison and have the same hero look as in image A?

      Kinda, but you would have to recompose for the crop factor.

    So is the Canon incapable of camera B shot because of physical limitation, or because of incompatibility with the other gear?

    just had an internet discussion (silly me, i know) about how 24mpx isn't enough and how outdated 24mpx cameras are. fml. this internet NEW will change your life is so ridiculous. people aren't learning anything and are expecting the new thing to solve problems they have, not the camera.
    anyway.. you promised a proper file naming tutorial :))

      @@mikafoxx2717 not just that.. you can print big 12, 16mpx, i do it all the time!
      Sure i have a gfx as well But FML.. there are advantages to a 16 megapixel raw file vs a 100 megapixel raw.

    Do I as a hobbyist need to conceal the brand identity of an existing product in order to develop my skills, assuming I post my results online?. So does say a bottle of Coca-Cola need to to be Photoshopped to say ACME Fizzy Drink or the label otherwise obscured?

    Isn't there also significant more detail on the top part of the bun on image A? Especially with the sesame seeds. Saw it almost instantly when you zoomed in. That gave it away for me. However, when zoomed out, can't see a difference. It doesn't matter at all.

    I started my photography journey with a mirrorless camera but I grew up seeing pictures from an SLR, and I immediately knew that B was from a DSLR because it just has a bit more of a film like look/feel that DSLR's naturally inherit from their SLR precursors

    The dynamic range on the B looks noticeably worse. Its highlight clipping is really harsh compared to the A.

    Long term LF user here, so the geometry was a tell. But… Canon on the Actus?! Can do it…
    Also seems to my eye like the Canon image was a little more exposed => thinner; less detail in the highlights, lettuce and plinth.
    I’m now back to a Canon 5Dii after many silly back and too swaps; waiting for home improvement loan to pay up then back to the Actus (sold the first 🤔😭😰)

    At first I thought the Fuji was B because the texture of the meat looked a bit richer. Then I was wondering because the green of A was not as washed out but then it became SO obvious it was A when you see the texture of the plinth. It just smacks you in the face.
