  • ( www.TFLtruck.com ) 2015 GMC Canyon is a new pickup that doesn't drive like a truck. In fact it drives much more like a new crossover but in this TFLtruck Review we wanted to know how this truck drives when the road turns snowy and slick.

    just got the 2015 GMC canyon all terrain, and this truck is all you need for regular everyday use. rides smooth, interior is comfortable, and the system rocks!! Definitely great buy.

      Mr. Garza We were literally about to buy it! But the SLT. We thought it was a cute truck and it was really easy to drive. But then we seen the Yukon Denali and we were taken away😂 we would still get the canyon but our Yukon is great👍🏼 Gotta love GMC

    Well a couple of things about the Canyon. First and foremost it is a full frame truck. The shield for gas mileage at the bottom folds back when it hits. Also The auto 4 wheel drive unit is a Canyon exclusive. This is far more then a urban cowboy truck as someone said in the quotes. It is set up to look like a MINI Sierra but the truck is comfortable and a lot better then any of the other small trucks it goes up against

    The truck for folks who want a truck for convenience not to compensate for other things. That is folks who, most of the time don't need a truck, but want one for those times that the do.

    The crossover comparison is a very valid one. They are clearly targeting this truck at crossover buyers (it is heavily targeted toward that suburban buyer and will likely see a large percentage of owners coming out of crossovers). "Want a crossover that can also haul mulch? Have we got a deal for you!"

    Just an FYI, AUTO mode is for driving on the streets in questionable conditions...4x4 or 4HI/4LO is for off-road and not intended for use on the streets. You can actually damage the transfer case by driving on dry roads with it locked in 4x4.
    Also, the sound of the V6 isn't great...they could have made it more trucky/aggressive sounding.

    GM really needs to find a way to make the lower chin spoiler something somebody can take off and put back on easily. I took my silverado offroad and ripped it(the whole bottom air deflector)right off. It ain't cheap to replace.

      How much was it to repair if you don't mind me asking? I'm debating taking a chance and leaving the front overhang on for a trip I will be making that involves some fairly heavy off roading. I'll remove it if it's looking too expensive to take a chance

    • @bmwmsport11
      @bmwmsport11 10 років тому

      FoodyTunes Mine is a 05. Cheapest lower bumper valence I found was like $50. I broke a few tabs on mine, I figure I could fix it with zip ties.
      Its not expensive or hard to fix. It just clips in place(though clips aren't designed to be used often)

    GM has been using Autotrak for about 15 years, both of my 02 S10 Blazers have had it, and its a great system. AWD for when you don't care and just want to get somewhere and know the roads all ok to bad, and 4WD HI and LO when you need it. It's also very reliable, and uses viscous clutches so you have extremly smooth operation.

    In addition to the chin spoiler delete it should also have folding steps that way when the doors are closed you get additional ground clearance.

    The automatic AWD is a HUGE selling point for me on a pickup. I don't want to have to shift manually while driving in the snow. I hope more pickups follow the automatic AWD thing.

    This new Caynon is more appealing than the Tacoma for me and I really liked the Tacoma.
    What the 2015 Caynon has that gets my vote:
    -4 wheel disc brakes, finally!
    -locking tailgate
    -more power
    -inside latch to open gas door (well at least it looks like it has and if it is what a huge plus)
    -The bigger body and new look looks alot better than the previous generation Canyon
    Only thing that sucks is that it doesn't come in a 6 speed manual with the v6

    Snow? You call that snow!! I call that a dusting! In N.E. where I live with a 400' driveway that goes around curving through trees, up and down hill with a parking area big enough for six vehicles to turn around in. We have received numerous time op to 20" of heavy wet snow! That I've had no problem getting out with my Z71 4x4, Colorado ext can! Matter of fact I sort of was able to "plow"the drive with that low hanging air dam! That right after driving through and out of the driveway, where I drove the rest of that area had less than 6-7" of snow left! There was enough snow move away so I was able to get out in my new Cherokee! That almost made it but got hung up!! The snow was over the hubs on the Colorado. But in 4x4, with a bed full of heavy wet snow I was able to drive right out, even at the end of the drive where the last 30' is uphill, plus with a mound from the town plows! The Colorado is as good in the snow as the Silverado Z71,4x4AWD we traded for the Colorado. The only option we could not get at the time in the Chevy Colorado is AWD Autotrack, that has always been available in the Canyon, but now available in the ZR2, my next truck!!

    Nice review. You hit the major factor why I bought a Tacoma, actually two of them. Wife has one now too. This Canyon is the perfect truck if it just had clearance and off road suspension. I love the AWD option. I hear there is a ZR2 possibly coming to fruition, problem is trucks grew big because they became the family vehicle. The ZR2 does not have the 4 doors and they stuck a tire in the back rendering the box useless.
    I'm a family man, I need 4 doors, I need a box to haul, I need comfort for me and family and I need a truck that is not cumbersome to park (just the right size) and lastly living up North which is the upper part of North America; frost heave on highways and snow is often more challenging than a dirt road, many cars last year ended up in the graveyard from potholes on the highway, for that reason I need a Tacoma to live in peace on these roads up North.
    FYI the Tacoma off road suspension is softer than the Tacoma's without it. The Limited did not have it and was a worse ride.
    Driving a car or a Canyon is a white knuckle drive where you swerve and sweat looking for the next lump or pothole that sends your vehicle to the grave when you live up North. With the Tacoma TRD I actually enjoy hitting potholes and aim for them and wish the roads were worse now, its like nothing affects it. And I have 4 doors and a box that holds 1500-Lbs and the ability to comfortably go off road if needed and comfortably park at Wal-Mart with the Family or hit the bars in style.
    Now this ZR2 thing is for a kid but even a kid cant put his quad in the back box because of the spare tire in the box. GMC goes from off road (ZR2) to pavement (Canyon) and misses the boat again for half of America and anyone down south that often travels off road. Lets watch Tacoma outsell them again.
    GMC had a winner, all they needed was to lift the front bumper on the 4 door model. Now reliability remains to be seen. The Canyon has it all but rendered useless due to clearance for a ton of buyers. Hence, I own a Tacoma, Two 4 door 2015 Tacoma's

      +Thomas Landers I still have 1998 4 cyl, manual, 2wd S-10 and it's perfect for what I need since I've owned it for 12 years. It's probably the most reliable vehicle I've had out of seven vehicles I've owned in my life. Did a great job of hauling my motorcycle, hauling new appliances/furniture and tossing old ones, hauling patio blocks in the bed beyond the weight capacity, and numerous runs to the dump when we were doing renovations. It's mostly flat where I live so I didn't need a V-8 to do all that. Would be nice, but not necessary.
      I would love getting into the new Canyon diesel. That would be my dream!

    Guys, I typically really like all your reviews,, they're great,,,, this one however really stunk. I'm pretty unbiased as I don't even own a truck currently but love watching the reviews. First you take the truck to a Motocross track and fault it for not going up and over the face of a Supercross tabletop? Really who does that LOL. Then the off road video review consists of you doing doughnuts in a flat area,,, that after you drive right past a whole rhythm section? When you tested the 15' F150 you were on a prepped Ford track you could push a stroller on. That Ford would not have crested the face of that jump either. Show the GMC on the same kind of track? Show the actual features of the truck and what they do. Sorry for complaining but not the best review.

    from my experience with my own 08 GMC 1500K, the traction control can not be totally turned off. yes i can do donuts in rain and snow but on dry pavement it will not let the truck do them. the chin spoiler will come off the 1st time you have to leave your driveway after the snowplow has "plowed you in" it not held on very well and thats a good thing in my book, since it pretty much removes itself for you. I bet those 2 details have not changed with this truck. I'd like to see you try some "aggressive" driving on dry pavement and see if the traction control stops you from acting like a teenager again. I bet it will.

    • @Hamillie_
      @Hamillie_ 10 років тому +2

      i know for my dads 2010 silverado youve got to hold the traction control button down until it says traction control off and stability track off, takes about 10 or so seconds, had some fun in that truck until i got my ram. I'd assume since they are the almost the same trucks that it would be the same on the gmc to.

    • @Militaristics
      @Militaristics 10 років тому

      yes they are, and yes i do disable them and get the dash symbol saying they are off but it still wont do any "stunts" on dry pavement. mine has a 5.3 (315 HP) with 4.10's and limited slip. I run goodyear eagle GT's 275/55/20 and after adding a cold air intake and using a programmer, it barks the tires during 1-2 shifts and can easily walk away from new V6 camaro's at a light (the 300 HP models) its not a "hot rod" but is plenty of fun to drive and does everything I ask of it, except lay rubber on dry pavement (the traction control cuts engine power)

      I saw a video on removing the chin spoiler on the "old" GM truck models. I have a 2014 Silverado and it's much different. There are about 15 bolts across the bottom of the bumper that hold the chin spoiler on now, and it's pretty secure.
      Although I could probably still break it off if I nailed a snowbank with it.
      That being said, I just remove it during the winter months and put it back on for gas mileage in the summer.

    • @Militaristics
      @Militaristics 10 років тому

      good to know, mine came off after i was late to work and had to drive through the snow plows handiwork at the end of my driveway. I have not noticed a gas mileage difference with mine. after re-tuning I get 20 MPG @ 70 MPH on flat road and 16 MPG around town when I drive "nice" I do have a BAK hard cover over the bed and swapped in a 2" lowering shackle kit in back to level the truck. that helped with the ride and handling more than anything else and I have never bottomed out even with a bed full of HVAC tools and equipment.

      I can't help you about the GMC but in my 05 5.4 ford with 3.73 gears I can roast tires all day, that being said I'd imagine the GMC can also. I think maybe your gear ratio is too high, it's not letting you spool fast enough for the amount of torque you have?

    I'm planning to buy one of these trucks in March 2015 but can't decide which one to get between the GMC Canyon or Chevy Colorado, I will use it as a regular Vehicle it will never tow anything or see of road { yes that's sad I know, but I love pickups even if its for regular use.} the thing is I love the GMC interior don't like the exterior design, and I love the Chevy exterior design but not the interior so I'm having a bit of a hard time deciding and yes I've test driven them both, and I'm definitely put Mattracks on it in the winter when we get some good snow in NYC like when the highways got shut down because of too much snow. arrrggg!!! cant make up my mind which one.

      If you can go Silverado, trust me full size trucks are REALLY practicle. You don't realize it until you have one.

      I think a silverado or sierra would be better but for a truck like this go with a toyota tacoma

    • @snaketech470
      @snaketech470 10 років тому

      true that plus if its for the gas trust me the silvered is everything its a V8 that can actually deactivate 4 cylinder and turn into a V4 and so the silverado is the most strongest truck in its class and is good for off roading and towing

    • @Bailey_54R
      @Bailey_54R 10 років тому +4

      Don't get a tocoma or frontier! If you need a mid-size, go GM, you can take the wind guard off, that will give alot of clearence. The 4x4 system on the GMs are way better. If you get into off roading, then get a 2-3 inch lift and you'll have a really good off roader! Way better than a tocoma or feontier. Plus, better fuel economy, reliability, & towing.
      Plus you help support our jobs by buying American!
      My preference is chevy. They're slightly cheaper and look better from the outside. Which is all most people are going to see

      Well, I did not know that the Nissan and Toyota were made here. But as an off road enthusiasts myself, I never messed around with toyotas. My off roaders include a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, and a 1976 GMC K10 4x4. So seeing I have no expert advice in the off road wanna be, pick up truck wanna be catagorie, I'll be leaving now.
      Have a good day you both seem like nice people, but I am done

    • @Sargebsa
      @Sargebsa 10 років тому +1

      the tacoma is a solid truck 22mpg average, great ground clearance, a 5spd manual and no awd only 4wd.

    • @dlakerguy
      @dlakerguy 10 років тому +4

      Tomlin James Go to fuelly.com and tell me what tacoma owners are getting 22mpg except for those that have a reg cab 4cyl. A colorado ex cab 4cyl will avg 24. And the colorado/canyon don't have AWD. it is 4wd w/ auto mode available on the canyon. meaning depending on traction, it will engage or disengage the 4wd. A vastly superior feature for snow/icy road driving. Oh yeah, and a 6speed manual is available too with the 4cyl.

    • @Sargebsa
      @Sargebsa 10 років тому +1

      Yes that 22mpg is from my 2015 4cyl 4wd 5spd manual access cab tacoma and I was not being light on the accelerator.
