I really liked it when Ron Simmons was the leader of the Nation , but his original character with the gladiator type helmet thing was stupid as you know what . He was too good of an athlete to have been treated that way .

I'll never understand why the all American first black world heavyweight champion wasn't good enough. I don't throw the race around like most people do these days, BUT I do t think Vince could not see black man being a Hulk Hogan clean baby face without a cartoonish gimmick
Total horseshit. Firstly Ron Simmons was known for WCW, so he had to make his own version of him (for copyright, Vince's ego, etc) and secondly, WWF was ALL about charisma and mic skills. Ron was very much in the Lex Luger mold, who also never got the world title there. WWF was cartoonish, so of course they had to give everyone a gimmick. Don't let the facts get in the way of your story though.
@@handsolo1209 I agree. It was more of Vince's insecurity regarding WCW. Only a few guys from WCW came over and got treated-right. Most guys had to pay dues before getting a meaningful push, or were outright jobbed into oblivion.
@Steve Taibot: That spot was supposed to go to Ahmed Johnson who was over but kept getting injured. Ron was older by the time he got there and had more miles on him than Johnson who was 5 years younger and was known to the WWF crowd and was over - more than Simmons at that time who was known for WCW. Ron was at the right place in his career by the time he got to the WWF. It's not a race thing. Ron came in at the end of the silly gimmick era in the WWF and needed to be established with the WWF crowd which would later happen. The Nation and later the APA where he did his best work, all great stuff. Ron didn't need to be champion.
APA was a good gimmick. blue plastic gladiator costume not a good gimmick.
Vince always tried to make the black guy even blacker. He always built their character around being black.
