Now, if EVERYONE could install such a device in their vehicle, then it would be sustainable usable actually practical real usecase. You gotta dream of such a day.
Except you can't drive and text
@@RustyOrange71 It's not about texting and driving, it's about having nodes distributed everywhere to increase coverage!
They *can* but the real problem is they won't bc most people don't know about it, don't understand it, and/or don't care about it. The status quo works for them, kind of.
@@EyeKnowRaff I think this hobby is much like Ham Radio, it's a niche, but that almost makes it cooler. If you could just send a Meshtastic message to anyone at any time, it's not unique anymore. For those of us that find this exciting, though, we'll slowly but surely expand our networks to extend coverage
Actually, it would completely fail because Meshtastic fails if there are too many devices in range.
Hey mate. Great videos. I got into Meshtastic partially through watching your videos. I'm at the bottom of the North island in New Zealand on 918.875mhz, and fortunate enough that a bunch of good buggers around here have set up solar nodes on some of the very tall mountains we have around here. As a result I am getting connections to nodes over 150KMs away, and over the water across to the South island! The off-grid aspect is of special interest here due to the earthquake risk and the relative fragility of infrastructure here, including internet and cellular. :)
Is 918.875 mhz a free public spectrum?
I'm new to this mesh. If I understand it correctly, Does it mean that when you send a text it goes out in all directions to another station then that sends out again like a repeater ? Meaning that you could send from Glasgow to Wadebridge in Cornwall as long as there was an unbroken chain of stations between them.
The government don't want you to know this goodbye Andy nice knowing you bro 😂😂😂
Byeee 🤣
@@andykirby
😂😂😂👍
The government is probably installing nodes themselves and being part of the network.
They can't get rid of all of us
Wow! Nice to see there are Conspiracy Theorists in the UK too (from the US)! 😁
FPV drone pilot here, Came for the TBS antenna, left with some new knowledge
Hey man, check out the other vids on the channel, lots of fpv stuff here 😁 quite a few fpv pilots also getting into mesh.
Yeah me too! Lol! I saw the TBS Diamond in the thumbnail and I was like "hey! That's my 915 antenna!" I was totally expecting a "how to fly from your car in winter" type video! Lol
same here
Bruh 😂
So, this is similar in concept and purpose to Citizen's Band (CB) radio in the USA in the 1970-1990's. A way for drivers to communicate road conditions, hazards (including police), But used codewords and slang to obfuscate any LEO's listening in.
LEOs had CBs in their patrol vehicles back then, and they did listen.
You could even call for law enforcement over the CB & the police/sherrif would call ambo/fire if needed
@@robertf6523Channel 19 was for general bs, 14 was for walkie talkie’s. I can’t remember what channel was reserved for emergencies but there was definitely an emergency channel; maybe channel 11. SSB always bled into channel 14 for some reason. I had low powered radio shack three channel mobile units but my best friend had a proper base station with 5 Watts and a decent antenna. Good times.
If you don't want to have to worry about adhesive on your paint, you can use nano tape. I have used that stuff to stick my cameras to bricks, and they've been up for years, when I take it off there is no residue, and no damage. I wouldn't use it on plaster or drywall, but basically any surface that won't come off with the tape is good.
* I say this because you seem like you're proud of your 450bhp machine 😉
It looks like my old Escort radar detector from the eighties. In the State of Virginia it’s a guarantee that you will get pulled over and charged with having a radar detector. Problem is that the police are really uneducated in Mesh equipment and how it works. These nodes need indicator lights showing when they are transmitting and receiving data from your Meshtastic keyboard.
That is a very solid looking installation, nice work!
Another cool video Sir Andy Kirby!
I am building a stealth Meshtastic node out of sight, because even for a 50 cent that fell out of your pants they will break your window. Above the wind shield there is a little space in the ceiling cover. I made an dipole antenna (put it flat to the window) and it seems to work pretty well.
Thank you for your valuable vids and inspiration!
Breaker 19

This is like 1970s 1980s CB radio for the latest gen digital age kids!! 😮😊😁
You know the ones whose parents gave them an old iphone to play with as a pacifier / dummy substitute!
Roger 10-4
I hope they won't make a remake of Smokey and the Bandit using a Tesla truck and a Tesla car
im using a thunderpole window chip mount and a nagoya sma mini mag mount both with aliexpress 40cm flexi whip antennas for my mobile nodes works quite only issue i found is newer cars are using 868mhz for tpms and sometimes the low pressure tire warning light comes on when my node is TX-ing
In romania we can add cb radios on the car... much more easy to chat.
And can say Alo colega
Do radios make road rage worse or reduce it ?
@@KANJICODER_IRL It's better because people can make other people idiots so they don't feel the need to use the car to send a message. On the other hand, a lot of people do x2 the speed limit because they anounce the speed traps
Trim the antenna down to 6.2 " (15.7cm) and it will work even better. It's quite a bit long for 900 MHz.
FPV drone pilot here just getting into HAM. Saw the TBS antenna and absolutely thought this was going to be drone content. 😂
Drone pilot as well saw tbs antenna and couldn’t resist.
Same 😅
Same
@@sinologies tbs is old school now , been a while since the dead cat
Same over here. 😅
They used to have a smaller version of this as a watch about 10-15 years ago!! They took it off market. It was actually peer to peer only within 50fett. It was a social communicator for local, for parties and in cars. Lora
Have i stumbled onto the extremely bored middle aged geeks channel 😂😂
same!
That super low swr you measured is definitely due to the loss in the cable (indicated by the ripples). Try taking the antenna off the base and see if the swr changes LOL
Was that antenna a tbs black sheep???
Hi Andy Great video can you please provide a link where we can get the fancy OS for T-Deck as i have been looking around for weeks without success.
Will the original T-Deck work also? And to boot mesh is pretty sparse here in SW Scotland
Yes it works👍🏻
Maybe do a STARTERS KIT Guide.
For say a Family not in same neighborhood but in same town to connect everyone
(2) teenagers & (4) adults
Wow! Very cool! I need to check this mesh stuff out. I wonder if it's possible to use the entire car as the antenna?
Sounds like UK police get extra nosey about anything with an antenna lol
Hide it away then.
I live in the USA the police don't give a damn
@@6581punk except on another note, idiots who arn't cops in traffic think I'm an undercover or something retarded for having a gmrs obtusely displayed antenna so they would harass me in traffic and do all kinds of ass riding so I did end up disguising it.

Interesting concept. Would love to do this but chances are I would be the only person I know with one.
Exactly what I was thinking 🤔
I'm very interested in these but how do I make one and get a parts list? Also, approx how many US $$$'s ??
Thanks
@andykirby what firmware are you using for your tdeck?
My friend went to jail and now has a new encrypted phone 😮
More distraction behind the steering wheel. That makes streets safer 😂😂🎉🎉
That Audi having "450BHP" is a viral piece information, to make sure the radio signals to the mesh work well.
Never heard anything like that before in HAM world !
LOL
yeah its called ego some call it bragging
No way that TT has 450 hp unless he put in a Chevy 454, the TT has a 4 cylinder 2 liter engine with under 250 hp on a good day.
LOL! 😂 It worked with me! Nice car Andy! 😎
Its a flex 💪
@@lawrencekeeley8966it has a larger turbo than standard he has a video on it
No issues with water leakage with that antenna cable going in like that?
No it's been fine, there's a seal around the door and it still works correctly with the wire from through.
My brain just melted when I accidentally landed on this video. I'm gonna need to dig into what else I can do? I remember seeing the technology when it arrived but it's matured 🎉
Another thing that EVERYONE needs to have. Or they need to make the network stack open source so anyone can make one and ALL models expand the mesh regardless of what product you choose to buy.
how hard would it be to incorporate a battery eliminator to take power from the cigarette lighter via a regulator?
What firmware has the GUI?
Great video Andy, by the way what is the name of that excellent Jazzy music track you have in the background? Is it available on Spotify?
Hey, thanks, I haven't released it yet 😁
Hi Andy, have you heard about the new upgrade battery for the Twizy ?
Well you be doing a review...💙👊😎
Install louvres with embedded antennas?
Wef won't like that lol 😂
Do you find that so many people are still clueless about the wef and their Great Reset agenda?
I researched Klaus Schwab and co like 5 years ago now, unbelievable that everyone can't see what's going on now!
That is not the stock Meshtastic front end…where did you find it?
Hi Andy, can you do a separate video on your Audi (and how it improves the overall LoRa Meshtastic signal strength)? 😁
Used this antenna for the taxi radio never had an issue before it went all mobile it's used for old RF carphones to good for the CB, missus has one for her DAB module in the rangerover
lol love seeing a black sheep diamond antenna being used for other things other than flying drones
Great antennas 😁👍🏻
Fun fact: the TBS Diamond antenna was a collaborative effort by Team Black Sheep and IBCrazy from Video Aireal Systems (VAS). One of the best antenna nerds, I mean guys out there! I have one and I use it every day on my ELRS 915MHz transmitter. So far I've had a quad out to 4.5 miles and the control link is going strong at 25mw! Incredible stuff!
have you found the latest build of "Fancy T-Deck" is good enough for daily driving?
Great video! (with an accurate title!) :P
Hey, curious what are your other two antennas on the rear window being used for?
have you tried to break the encryption?
Is that a TBS crossfire antenna?
Yup!
@andykirby looks like the old days of my drone flying will help in this project 😂
Have you got a link to the first antenna you use?
Search TBS Diamond antenna
Cheers @@andykirby, although it's encouraging me to go further down the rabbit hole!
Side note, have you heard of the green engineering menu toolkit mod for audi and volkswagen???
My friend had an encrypted phone. He’s in jail now.
Maybe you'll be joining him!
@ no, I actually had a career
He didn't have a phone loicense?
Why was he arrested for having an encrypted phone?
@@harimadhavan1712 That's not what he said ! Eg. "I had toothache and now I am in jail" 🙂
Unfortunately, in the US, this isn't available...
You're in a place called where?
Looks like a brilliant case, I already got the Nibbler on your recommendation, but I might have to get this when I'm ready to get a second node
Why is it placed in the drivers field of view at all? Let alone centered? The antenna IS magnetic if you add a magnet? Was the antenna matched in any way? What does the fatness of the coax have to do with anything real? This is cool but where is any science r fact or any general details?
I noticed the TBS (Team black sheep) antenna immediately 😂
Get back on that bike Andy. lol Very cool video. Think I'll stick to CB and SMS. Did you find the video on how to Mod the UV-K5 or 6?
Nice overview video, God bless.
🙏🏻thanks.
So how much better do you think it would be if it was magnetic with a ground plane?
The car acts as a reflective groundplane anyway, with or without a magnet 👍🏻
So anyone can add a node? Like the government?
Yes, it's how the governments attempt to track dark web traffic, they run nodes.
People were trying to use their routers to make a mesh network in the 90s, not enough adoption and not enough range.
This has a greater range and requires less nodes to be functional, but the bandwidth will always be tiny, it will never allow much more than text messages.
i can't think of a use case, other than as a message board, like randoms asking 'asl please'. what do you all use it for ?
It's a fun way to communicate and prepares you for communicating in a potential grid failure, Internet outage... it teaches you skills in radio comms.
@@andykirby if there's a grid failure i'll make a sandwich 🥪and take a nap, the network operators have generators and engineers to work stuff out, i don't have anything important to say lol
Would be better if it integrated into the rear window with big LED letter. Tell the guy behind you to eat your dust.
Andy, what Device Rolls are you using on your RAK Car Node and your Lilygo?
I switch it between client and client_mute depending on if I need the rak to repeat packets when I go in a shop with the tdeck etc.
What's the background end music - reminds me of Shakatak!
I've got an antenna mounted on the top of my Sprinter campervan (routed through the existing radio aerial mount), with a Heltec inside, looking forward to seeing who I discover on the continent 🇪🇺
I momentarily saw a "Hertford" node from Cambridge a day or two ago and wondered if that was you.
Yeah there's been some good conditions lately, signals travelling a very long way😁
Actually perfectly legal in the US it's called meshtadtic it's actually used alot in the US it falls under ham radio but also can be used by non like used users too
Sending the signals are legal in the USA, on some frequencies. However (I could be wrong) but there are rules disallowing encrypted signals.
This is like AIS they use on marine boats that shares location data and other small messages
Solid Flex💪 450 bhp. 🐎 💨
hahahaha VAS diamond for crossfire :D never thought of that seeing as they run on the same band LOL as for the coax loss, at that length it's negligible
All those antennas on the car people are going to think it's a undercover police car 😂
Ive got that Team Black Sheep antenna!
Why would you get "questioned" by the police for this?? Is your country that much of a 1984 state? Sounds miserable to live like that
It honestly is that bad here.
So it is used as a local dating app?
lol, that's the impression i got too
I regularly connect to H001 & H003 from Higham Ferrers in Northants, 42 miles away with my Paradar 8.5dBi omni... 🙂
That's great, do you ever see any messages from our side?
@@andykirby Yes, I do but not all of them by any means. Last message from H001 was 3rd Nov at 15:39 saying "Sorry everyone, you can go back to sleep now" and ones saying "Morning Roy", "Afternoon Bryan" and "G7FPE copy". So not a reliable connection, but occasional stuff does get through that makes sense. Not bad for these power levels.
Interesting, possibly some lift conditions maybe 😁 have you had any since?
@@andykirby Yes, not every day. Yesterday (23/11/24) I just received one message from H001 saying "Crazy" but nothing else. Today, I received one saying "crazy weather". I assume that a number of additional messages were sent by you that I didn't see! The weather is very rainy here over the last few days.
I’m pretty sure he hasn’t explained what this actually is at any point in the video, just its functionality with this handheld device. I don’t get it. Will someone help in simple terms and then share why this is useful please?
So basically you create your own closed loop encrypted cellular network between users.
Yes basically.
It's Like the Klaxx!!!
I was literally thinking the other day if this would work well in a car 😂
Mesh networks are only as good as the number of people using them. I'm guessing this will have such low user take up it'll hardly be worth it.
Add to that the increased danger encouraging people to text while driving.
Breaker breaker for a text…..doesn’t sound the same as my CB when I was a kid
Looks like a GMRS antenna
My Skoda only ‘Runs 190hp’, will this still work😂
cool upload

Locks like an radar warning system 😮
😮looks like a RC CAR Andy
How random I was in Ware and Hertford last weekend and had nothing on my device.
Interesting, coverage should be good in Hertford town but near Tesco area it might be scratchy on a modest antenna.
Ware will be tough without a decent antenna.
MI5 is watching. 🕵♂️
So it's a wireless twitter with your neighbors. lol
make local proximity chat
Meshtastic absolutely alpha hyped up junk
That thing would bake in 20 mins in a Florida car.
First thing the cops will do is infiltrate the mesh..
The Mesh Must Grow
Yea that's half the fun
Or jam it
Mesh has been around and its encrypted if they really wanted on it im sure theirs a way the point is it's just texting and you don't need to pay a bill and in an emergency you could text a friend others the internet or cell may be down so it's like CB that way
This mesh network would be so ideal for emergency events like the internet is down in areas.
The car is looking like under cover cop car🤣
does it need 450hp car?
cause I only have 330hp
Mine’s only about 60. I’m out.
Would like to try this out let you know how it ggoes
If they could ger voice calls over this system.. you know how quickly the telcos would jump on this.. i mean it all starts somewhere right.. independent mobile network.
you also can make a "phone" call and speak ?
Looks like the antenna i use with the walkie talkie, if so not to bad
it looks like a mobile message board from when wap phones were a thing.
lol there are plenty of apps that do this. Just sending messages using Bluetooth. Clearly not secure. But nothing new.
I mine crypto on 868mhz helium network... Very close to your 870
