I agree. People can feel great relief when they can unload without shame or judgment from the people in their group. Also, when people can learn that they are not alone in how they feel and what they're experiencing, it relieves isolation, it validates, and gives that feeling of "finally someone understands". Humans yearn for connection, we are social beings. Group therapy allows for this process to happen.

Any therapy can be harmful if it's badly done; there's always some risk involved. However, there is research supporting the effectiveness of group therapy. For many people, letting down the usual barriers around a group can be helpful--and it's generally a gradual process. (I know I'm responding to a comment from two years ago, so you may not care for my response.)

George's poignant self-disclosure is a testament to the power and curative factors of Yalom's approach.

@HiAdrian Group therapy was developed in Britain during & after WW II. Psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion found that "shellshocked" veterans responded well to working together in therapy. I agree that it is risky & not for everyone, but so is sky diving. I'm glad it is available. It is painful but in a way that feels more like a workout or maybe some really deep body work. Hurts a lot the day of, and then you feel much better the next day.

Quick question...are these DVD's actual sessions or are they actors acting out a script?

@HiAdrian group therapy has a different impact to the client compared to individual psychotherapy. About what you said, well, it is kind of true but sometimes a client might not be ready yet for group therapy. Maybe, the client needs to go through individual psychotherapy first for a few sessions. Also, depending on their problem whether group therapy would be one of the right things to do (chosen by the therapist), in order to gain insight, direct change, and/or just open-up.

Meg....well done. This IS an example of harmful therapy. Dr. Yalom seems to focus only on "feelings".......I am a psychologist...addressing what an individual needs to change behaviorally to experience gratification---along with examining negative thoughts creates healthier self esteem-- THEN we begin to FEEL better. Focusing on feelings constantly only reinforces bad/sad/mad feelings. Good observations......

You don’t need group therapy to openly share with someone. Sometimes all it takes is a trusted friend/loved one to listen as you unload your stuff. Therapy is helpful but not always necessary.

This guy is awesome, but seems highly scripted. And not spontaneous. Like actors.

I always thought that group therapy risks damaging a necessary personal shield. To me there's nothing sensible, dignifying or mature about it, an American fad. Nobody is that intimate with "strangers", and for good reason.

I never liked Yalom, I think this stuff called existential pshychotherapy is futile and depressing. His comment: "I feel I know exactly what you are going through"in the end sounds like a cliché, how can he say that to a man wearing diapers? Of course he doesn't know what it is like to be in a wheelchair and wear diapers. He is lying! How can good psychotherapy include lying and hypocrisy?
