    The audio quality and value of Comica mics are crazy right now. I have the Comica Vimo C3 lavalier mics and love them, may need to pair with the VM30!
    Always appreciate your detailed reviews and walk throughs Ray, especially as someone new to the industry. 🙏🏻🫡

      Thanks!! I really appreciate that, made my day. I agree that the Comica mics sound great. All the voiceovers in this video (off-camera) were with this VM30 mic too. Running straight into Adobe with the USB-C cable. Welcome to the industry. I'll try my best to pass off what I've learned, to you. I may need to pick up some of those Vimo C3 lav mics too!

      Yes, thanks, it sounds so good for voiceovers. The VM30 is on Pre-order on B&H Photo, but you can already find them on Amazon: geni.us/Comica-VM30

    Great note on the mic windscreen. Listening to others speak on the microphone windscreen being its weak point, I thought why would Comica do that. It really is a fantastic microphone.

    I ordered one and it will arrive today. If I knew that the audio drops out even when you’re close to it, I would have never bought it. I was torn between this and the Zoom 32 bit shotgun and the wireless feature was a deal breaker, but now I know it can’t be trusted even when you’re close.

    I also have the VM30. You said that the security track function works in wireless mode on 10:30, but it does not work in my case, it works only in wired mode. I also read in the manual that it only works in wired mode. Did you have a new firmware or something?

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  Рік тому

      I have a Pre-production model (before it was released to the Public). I just realized when I'm in wireless mode, the Mic itself will let me go into Safety track mode (so the levels are showing safety -6db lower on Right Channel on the actual Microphone), but the Camera is receiving the same levels on both channels in Wireless mode! Thanks for noting that!!!!

    Excellent review friend, but I have a question, what is the difference, when the microphone is connected to the camera, when the receiver is connected to the camera compared to when the microphone or the receiver is not connected to the camera. Thank you very much for the video. This is a great video.

      I wondered why, unfortunately, my camera only has an output for the micro USB, but I think I use this microphone as a boom microphone. I think if I have a USB C adapter I can find the solution and try them.

    Really appreciate all the time and energy you put into this review! Title is a little misleading though as this tech that has been around for a looooong time. A better comparison would have been against the new Zoom M3 Mictrak that offers 32-bit float on-board mid-side stereo recording with the option to easily modify the sound field in post. It's not wireless, but can be easily connected to a wireless transmitter like RODE Wireless Go to get same functionality. I purchased the M3 a few months ago and it's been incredible. As a solo content creator, I need something that can just turn on and work - audio levels are now one less thing I need to worry about. Plus it's nearly the same price at $199. Do you have any experience with the Zoom M3? Would love to hear your thoughts on it!

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  Рік тому

      Thanks, I appreciate it. Although, no I have never heard of the M3. I have a Zoom H4n, H1, F1...but I haven't got any of their new devices in years. Is that $199 plus the price of the Wireless Go II $300? Great option if you already own a wireless kit. This Comica mic can be as minimal as just the metal tube, when in wireless mode, and you can use it like a handheld mic on camera. The one thing I wish it had was a backup recording option. 32-bit float sounds awesome! Do you have to export the files into something useable or is it just Drag and Drop files from the M3?

    • @mannysantics1833
      @mannysantics1833 Рік тому

      @@RayValencia It depends on what you're editing in. 32 bit float works in most DAWs and most of the popular video editing solutions. I just bought an M3 this week and I absolutely love it so far. Not having to worry about clipping or setting audio levels is amazing. The sound quality is fantastic too. To answer your question it records 32 bit float .wav files directly to an SD card so you can sync them with video in post.

    Could you please tell me what threshold you recommend when inside?

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  Рік тому

      It depends on your distance from the Mic (boom or mic stand) but I use it at 5db on the Mic Gain when I'm inside for Voiceovers with the Safety Track enabled in case I get too loud. I keep all the Noise reduction Off.

      I only have the one, but I have used other Comica transmitters on set with no issues. They should stay paired up to their own receivers.

  • @JWS1968
    @JWS1968 3 місяці тому

    It has an SPL of 130db in comparison to the VM20 which had an SPL or 105db this just mean you can get louder without it distorting the audio. -6db lower for the safety track? Why bother. They should have made that -12db minimum. The battery life basically halves if you use the wireless feature but that's still 12 hours. In reality probably more like 8-9 hours. But that would be constantly on. Turn off in between takes and for lunch and it'll last longer. Lets be hones it's a prosumer mic and most who buy this will be happy with that battery life.

    Wind test wasn't OK. I'm thinking of buying this (June 7th 2024), but you needed to make the wind noise loud enough, not hard to do, without the foam cover and wind muff on firstly. ie an oscillating fan at high speed should be more obvious as the baseline comparison of what foam and wind muff (dead cat) should reduce.
    Then put on the foam and wind muff, that should have completely cut out the booming wind sound, unless the wind muff is totally useless, which is what I seem to feel is the case from two other 'wind test' reviews of this mic. Maybe don't put on the foam noise reducer, just the wind muff only.
    Then switch on 75hz and then 150hz cut. If with all the wind noise reductions on you can hear any wind booming then it's a fail, would probably even fail blowing on it with the breath even.
    All reviewers seem not to be testing it at the limit, ie if it's to be used as an onboard run&gun shotgun mic on camcorder it's coming over to me as a failure in terms of wind noise. If you want a wireless indoor mic, but aren't concerned about *ELIMINATING* wind noise then it does sound fine.

    The only cons of this product is that it does not record internally into receiver...

    • @RayValencia

      Agreed! But I would've put the recorder in the Transmitter instead, so less chance of dropouts being recorded on the Receiver.

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  Рік тому +5

      Interested to know if it is certain scenarios you guys aren't digging the sounds of? Wired straight into Camera, Wireless handheld, wireless boom, Podcast straight into Computer? Or None of it?
      *all the Audio in this video was the VM30 except for the park scenes where I was showing the VM30 kit and what it comes with, etc. That was Comica BoomX-D Pro with Rode Lavalier Go on ZV-E10 (for that nifty Product Showcase mode).
      And the indoor overhead shots where I was explaining how to use the mic, etc. That was a Tram Lavalier [straight into the ZV-E10] because the VM30 was being manhandled by me in those shots, heh.
      Everything else is fair game! I did the head to head comparisons with my other mics like an hour deep into this video, lol. So plenty of options and ways to decide whay you like. Let us know why?

    • @RayValencia
      @RayValencia  Рік тому +2

      Love my Deity S-Mic 2S as well. I compared them super late in the video, but the downside is it can't go wireless, or plug into a phone, or USB into a computer, or work with a regular camera (non-cinema) with 3.5mm inputs (because it needs Phantom Power XLR inputs - for any beginner camera guys/gals reading this).
      VM30 is a very versatile tool for a different type of video creator. My Deity 2S lives on my FX6 most of the time. Harder for a Wireless Mic to compete against my XLR mics...But I still did it anyways! 😁 I tried to show what budget, buys you which sound.
