Welcome to my Austin Mini Mayfair 998 Automatic restoration. This project car was bought from e-bay in July 2020, my intentions are to carry out a light restoration and make the car the best it can be while keeping it completely original. The end result will be a time warp back to 1984 and the car will look like it has just left the showroom.
This Mini Mayfair is rare in that it has only covered 12,000 miles since new, only 330 miles per year! The shell is almost completely rust free and has never been welded or had any panels replaced.
In this episode, I discover a major oil leak. Some diagnosis is required to find the source

how wonderful when your engine is clean and you can see the source and flow of the oil...

Hiya Kieth, good to see you and Tardis. Always leave mine in park, but it's probably a completely different engine and box as you'll know. Keep them videos coming Kieth. Stay well mate!

I will dig my selector seals out!

When removing the control rod, there are 2 nuts that attach it to the bell crank. Be sure to mark their position or you will spend a lot of time later adjusting the shifter. There is a tiny spider clip that holds the seal in place, you may or may not have one. They are easily damaged and care should be taken removing it. Use 10W40 motorcycle oil that is rated MA2 for wet clutches. The Autominiregister is a great source of information. Cheers! Jon

Thanks for the shout out in the last episode and the good laughter - don't bother about my surname, even the most germans have problems with it. [Yes, disappointingly I'm only german and not from Norway ;) ]
With the last pointy camera movement inside the Tardis, I think it was clear where You want to lead the audience... :D
And here are my thoughts about this project after all:
    - first of all: it's Your car, do what ever You wand to do
    - I would take my time and try to understand or find the spirit of this Mini and then follow it in small steps... it's don't have to be original* but it would be nice, if it's sympathetic to it soul.
    - ok, maybe You should not need that 7 years I've needed for mine...
    - perhaps give the body a good polish before deciding to respray parts of it. It will be not perfect, but maybe good enough to enjoy and would tell a better story then a repaint.
Original are in my eyes only cars that left the factory like this and only have consumables refilled.
Yes, when You daily Your Mini like I do with my factory build cabriolet, at 16.000 mls in average per year, everything becomes a consumable, but I hope You get my point.

Thanks Bjorn. I definitely want to avoid a full respray. I think the paint will come up very nicely with a careful machine polish

Hi Keith the benefits of time lapse allowing you to clearly identify the seepage. Maybe the next time we could see an extended time lapse of some paint drying!! Lol 😎😂😂
Interesting that both you and Mark were of the same opinion regarding the Mark1 mini, I along with 500 plus other were watching it and Rhys will I’m sure be happy with the sale price, clearly my offer of a fiver towards it as a project wasn’t enough to convince Mark to buy it, he could have had it done for Lucy as a Christmas present ..........maybe he still is ???
As always Take Care Stay Safe Everyone Regards Dave 👍

I love watching your videos, I'm really looking forward to seeing you pull the engine and strip it down.
I'm fascinated as to how the auto box works, it would be really brilliant if you can give a brief explanation as to how the mini auto box works.

yep o-ring seal behind the shifting rod.....common on the automatics.....If the seal is just slightly undersized (or shrank) it slowly bleeds, but if there is pressure in the engine it doesn't.....nothing serious just a pain.

You left it in drive Keith!

i would say if the shaft has been in one position for a long time ever so slightly out off round, or off centre then the seal being old and gone hard it will leak when not in its natural position (park/neutral)

When I had my engine rebuilt my Mini had a leak. It took me some months to realize that it was more noticeable if I ran the car colder or at night, and to my surprise it completely dissapeared under Spanish summer days... I changed my thermostat from 74º to 82º to let the engine run a bit hotter (hardly reaches 90º) and the leak was history, unless I stop the engine when it is still under working temperature.

I'll be interested in watching you replace the seals etc as we didn't do that in KITT and i just couldn't work out where the oil was leaking from. We didn't change any seals so maybe that's what i'll need to do on KITT.

  • @richardsadler8226

Hi Keith perhaps the reason it didn’t leak the second time may of been to pressure build up from running it before and no leak due to not running and building up a bit of crankcase pressure causing the pressure to push a weep of oil out over the time of stop still
    I don’t know just a idea

Keith, can you tell me where you got the red top Wurth bottle? Everywhere seems to have the black one which is not suitable for solvents.

Age and lack of use will cause the selector seal to harden and when the selector is moved the seal will leak

I thought that was the automatic level gauge fitted to all minis? It drips to show there's oil in there :-)

have you put 10w/40 semi synth motorcycle oil in it yet, I put some in my auto mini , and it really improves the gear change and smoothness of the gearbox .
