    We have a lot in common Tim. I'm a professional photographer (architectural/interior design).The two most influential investments I ever made was my Nikon D800 and the Waldorf Quantum. I got mine in March when the world started changing and I realized I was going to be home for a while. It is expensive but I realized that the Quantum would make my GR-1 and 30 voice XT rack expendable and go about halfway towards the cost. The Quantum looks/feels/acts like a $10k synth. Is it for everyone? No. But if you love sound design and have your own samples to fill it with - it is a dream. Never had imagined how amazing it would be to explore and learn. I got an MPC Live in January and have created about 400 samples. The Quantum must be the best sample playback machine around. I love taking a sample and placing it in osc 1 and 2, ping pong both continuously but start the 2nd sample playback backwards. It gives a wonderful evolving wash on synth pads. I have many warm analog pads/sounds that I'm so impressed with. Resampling samples as you manually move through the sample granularly is wicked. Put endless reverb attached to the wheel at max. So fun. I have a Ventris reverb but the Quantum reverb is so good that I don't need the Ventris with this synth. Perhaps the best reverb available on a synth. The mod matrix, 40 slots - and almost anything can be modulated, and so quickly and intuitively with the mod interface, is just brilliant. The ability to create presets of oscillators, wavetables, effects settings and so many things is bonkers. 5 !! synth engines and still evolving. I can go on and on. In the end, it all comes down to sound, and I get blown away every evening at the sound of this machine. Hours just fly by. Basically there is nothing else out there close to the Quantum. It will be looked back 25/50 years on as a groundbreaking historical synth. Cheers mate, love your vids and passion.

      @* AnimalHeadSpirit * I've had the chance to try the Quantum at home. And ended up with buying a Summit and an Argon 8. 2 synths that sound incredibly warm and organic. 2 things I completely missed in the Quantum. A zillion features indeed. Perfect for sound design and cinematics. But the Quantum / Iridium both lack 'musicality' and character. I also use Omisphere. And to be honest, it simply sounds better than Quantum. Since Waldorf XT & Q, they managed to put synths on the market that blow you away with a zillion features, but unfortunately without character...And the majority of synth buyers are blinded by knobs and features, and so missing the real importance. So if I want to do weirdo stuff, I turn on my V-synth XT. Same issue. Absolute cult machine, but plastic sound. Put a JD990 (I own 3x) alongside the Quantum, and you'll understand what I mean. And that's a simple rompler...but with an incredible impressive lush sound. Not that I wouldn't want a Quantum or Iridium. Just as a toy to create stupid impressive sounds. Maybe one day. :-)

      @@sK3LeTvM1 Interesting feedback. A good way to get your warmth back in digital sounding synths is using an external analog direct box, or other effects. An analog EQ and Compressor can take most digital sounds and turn them into the timbre you desire. Of course at more expense and time. But I've discovered this. I typically put all my synths though a rack mounted direct box that boosts and warms up the signal without noise. It's been in my set up for decades and works well.

    I have the Quantum, it is one of the best synths I’ve ever owned, very deep with very much limitless possibilities. I love the stereo aspects too but really like the sound of the Quantum’s analog filters. The one and only thing I miss is having multi timbral layers to sequence at the same time like the Waldorf Q or Novation Supernova 2. Many modern synths don’t tend to have this in fact. Maybe it was a fashion thing in the 90’s. Really enjoyed your video👍

    My favorite VST synthesizer of all time was the Waldorf PPG, so the Quantum would be right up my alley. I do own a Yamaha Montage, which is a very deep and well thought out digital synth. I feel I've only scratched the surface of the sound design possibilities of the Montage, so maybe I should enjoy the synthesizers I have before I buy a Quantum. Note: I did end up buying the Serum VST and that scratched my wavetable itch very nicely! I still have the Quantum in my sights though.

    Enjoyed this video, thanks. As a v-synth user the quantum has always intrigued me and it is nice to see it positively evolve, since it is often a concern with flagship synths that they'll abandon it too soon or hastily round it off. It sounds majestic and is great to see such an adventurous synth in current production.

      I rebought a V-Synth a year or so ago as I feel they are future classics, and will one day be silly money. I still feel that, but the more I see of the Quantum the more I think it could replace my V-Synth and Waldorf XTk, and let me condense two synths down into one and save some space. I see my studio gear as part of my pension, so I'm not wanting to sell two synths that may well rocket in price in the future, but it's such a tempting proposition! What's a boy to do?!?

    The Kernel engine is more than just FM thanks to the ability to use wavetables within the kernels as modulation sources and sounds, plus the ability to freely mix each of the kernels between the 5 different types - Phase FM, Traditional FM, AM, Ring mod and Wavetable. As someone who has spent a lot of time with the Kernel engine, and who has owned some dedicated FM synths in the past (Yamaha FS1R among them) i can say that the sonic pallette of the new engine can produce tones that FM simply cannot. It is particularly good for creating evolving pads as well as organic basses and drones with endless modulated complexiity thanks to the kernel mod matrix and the Global mod matrix.

      Yes I did actually own a PX prior to getting the Quantum. I had started making videos on the PX when it developed a hardware fault and had to be returned to DSI after a month of various attempts to get it working again. At that point I decided that the PX wasn't for me, but I am sure that the firmware and DSI's ability to remotely support it have both improved a lot since that time.
      In general I loved the interface of the PX, it's stereo filter setup, effects and the overall sound, but I thought a large portion of the sample set installed on it was not curated especially for the synth but had been cobbled together and was not really well thought out or very suitable to be perfectly honest.

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  4 роки тому

      Antony Opinions on filters are a very personal thing. The ones in the Quantum (and so Iridium) are based on Waldorf’s VST plug-ins - Nave, Largo and PPG. The Iridium also has a new filter algorithm not in the Quantum, I haven’t heard it yet. I think the digital filters in the Quantum are fine, good enough that I use them instead of the analogue filters to achieve stereo. But I feel they are a bit heavy on resonance, I prefer more subtlety so tend to use the 12db versions over the 24. I don’t think they are as good as Peak analogue filters, but there is so much to the Quantum/Iridium that they totally blow the Peak away with their sound design capabilities.

Peak is the one I keep thinking of replacing (Ive though of Kyra, Rev 2, Argoin8 and Hydrasynth at times as well as Iridium). Hi Tim, you made this comment re the prophet x vs the quantum 'I miss the PX and would be interested in acquiring one again some day. Compared to the Quantum it feels more like a complete instrument and is very immediate. With the Quantum I find it hard to think of it as an instrument rather than a collection of software, which is what it basically is...' do you still feel like this after the v2.0 update?

    • @TimShoebridge
      @TimShoebridge  4 роки тому

      The v2 update improves the Quantum immensely, the user experience is so much better, less tapping on a screen and more turning encoders. And most of all for me personally, the sampling aspects of the Quantum are now really excellent, and I use the Quantum as my sampling workstation now.
      it's been a long time since I used a PX but the sampling aspects of it were more an extension of the synthesiser, I would say more integrated into the instrument and its interface compared to the Quantum. But other than that I can not compare them, I have no idea how much the PX firmware has changed since I last owned one.
      The Quantum is a collection of software algorithms in a dedicated hardware controller. How much that bothers you will in the end depend on how productive you are with the synth, how creative it allows you to be. All I can say is that the Quantum with its v2 particle engine is what I have been looking for in a synth for a long time. I still have concerns, there are still bugs and glitches. And 2Gb of space for samples is wholly inadequate. But at this point in time the Quantum has become an essential part of my studio.

      They will definitely be better than a VA emulation but I personally don't miss using them, I'm happy with VA but I am sure there are many people who will disagree with my opinion.
      To be perfectly honest, I get the feeling that we, the synth-buying public, are partly to blame for limited polyphony hybrid synths such as the Quantum due to our insistence that "analogue is great and digital is crap". That was our collective opinion up until only recently and it is nice to finally see we've turned the corner with digital synth releases not being scoffed at any more (eg Hydrasynth, Argon8, Wavestate, etc etc)
      I'm sure at the time Waldorf were designing the Quantum they felt compelled to put analogue filters into the synth, just the same as Dave Smith did with the Prophet X and Novation did with the Peak. And of course that circuitry pushes up the price so pushes down the polyphony.

      @@TimShoebridge Have you checked the Domain option in the Filter options ? The Digital option replaces the Analog Filters (i think ) with an Digital emulation that keeps the Stereo Signal, and lets you use the DF for something else.

    I like how you keep sounds relatively pure. Most demo's are actually a bit underwhelming because people tend to stack option upon option untill sounds appear that are actually too complex to take in, leading to audio overkill. My second impression is that the analog modeling waveforms are very neutral. Since you also describe the analog filters a such it might very well be that I'd use the Quantum in a similar way as you do. Lastly this thing beggs to be played with MPE or at least poly pressure. In that repect the keyboard is actually a bit of a letdown. Have any of both at least been implemented via MIDI by now? The good news is that the Iridium will deliver almost anyhting one needs for half the price. In the mean time I have however gone for Bitwig studio 3.0 with the inbuilt Grid modular. In it one can really build ones own dream instruments. Mine is very akin to a CS80 augmented with granular sampling fed into a resonator section. One could also call it a Technics WSA1 on steroids. The hands on experience is of course less good but I'll be tackling that soon by including a pair of Korg Nanocontrols 2.0's. Onwards and upwards! Or should one say that the other way around. :-) Anyway: Thanks for the insights.

      Hi Marc, sorry for the late reply, I am no longer getting notifications from YT any more for all the comments that people leave on my videos so I end up only coming across them now by chance.
      Keeping the sound simple as possible is I think a lesson that I quickly learned when I started to record my own music. When it comes to mixing, it is as much about the space between the sounds as it is the sounds themselves. But that said, I am a sucker for stereo which many seasoned producers will tell you should really be avoided if you want to mix a song successfully!
      As for MPE, I think you really need a multitimbral synth to implement MPE optimally. Each note you play needs its own MIDI channel to control it's own pitch modulation, amplitude modulation, filter cutoff modulation and whatever else it is that you wish to affect on a per-note basis. The Quantum has a lot of power for its in-built sound generation but its polyphony is low and it is only bi-timbral, so MPE is certainly possible but only for two simultaneous notes at any time.

      @@TimShoebridge Interesting. My main setup actually works exactly in the way you describe. I split poly touch info from a master keybaord into multichannel info, generated by a rare but nifty device called the MIDIMIXFIX. This then drives 2 Technics WSA's and nowadays Bigwit Studio 3's The Grid, which is poly AT (and even MPE) capable. That's actually the reason why I am not as tempted to go for the Quantum/ Iridium as I otherwise would be.
      As far as stereo is concerned I agree. Again a certain restriction in arrangement density then makes it possible to create such evolving textures. When I combine the split polytouch with the WSA-1's internal random panning option you get a sort of orchestra that dances around the listener in stereo. It's against all the rules but totally my thing. Here are some links in case you are interested: You'll find a description of a somewhat earlier version of my setup here: www.brassee.com /instruments.html#starship_one and music made on it van be found here: www.brassee.com/electronicmusic.html. It's however high time I do a website upgrade. :-)

    It seems to be an amazing machine. The only thing I don’t understand is why such a beast do not use poly aftertouch as a modulation source nor destination 😱 ? I could understand that the keyboard do not send poly after touch, but why aftertouch poly isn’t a destination and a source of modulation ? There is a non sense in that ! Just my two cents..

    Here is my take and i read Moonsofjupiter's comment and agreed....The Quanb=tum suffers from the same as the Yamaha DX7 FD2,Andromeda, Hartmann, and some others, that it requires someone ready,willing,and able to master it. It's common knowledge that MOST people will never dig into a synth,they just want quick results. I just had a conversation with a content creator recently who was trying to argue with me that the EWaVe was so much more because of it's specs. I told him,that means NOTHING to most people,who buy music,who go to clubs,so it's not worth it to have each new synth or 30 of them,unless you are paying that mortgage and gaining wealth from music.Then I explained,if you're not releasing music,there's no deadlines,no rush to get immediate results. Then I explained,if you make an already great machine and add the ability to sample or import/use samples,you have raised the bar to kore than twice the power of the synth. In other words,if the machines had 4000 wavetables,25 OCSs, 24 filters,14 drum kits,12 DCOs,12 DCAs,and then i add my sampled voice,we go into uncharted territory. It's the same with samplers,like my ASR10,which I ended up mostly using with samples i made and for the efx processor while I DJ live.Then I have an analog Roland and 3 other completely different samplers, and my Polyend Tracker that is it's own world. That being said,I believe if you get a Quatum,you have to be ready for it,not the other way around. If you want to enter into other mindsets,it's for you,yet if you want something like a Triton,M1, Montage, Fantom , Kronos, etc, that's immediate,it will probably be frustrating. I am going to probably get one or the Iriduim..
