- What makes an actor's audition tape unique enough to stand out, but not too over the top that they've "jumped the shark"? In this video, Pro Acting Coach, Cody Dorkin, reacts to "‘The Batman’ Actor Barry Keoghan Riddler Audition Tape That Landed Him The Joker Role". We recommend if you haven't seen the audition yet, you can watch the full video here: deadline.com/2...

Loved this audition. It's so different, at first I thought it was like a screen test of some kind, looks like a demo or a promo. Regardless, bold choice ❤️
Yes, actors are really thinking outside the box to get noticed.
These audition tape reviews are great and very helpful. As an actor this type of information is extremely valuable. If you could do more of these when you can that would be so awesome. Great job!
Good analysis. Barry Keoghan’s Riddler is deliberate and strategic, yet relaxed, arrogant, and violent, hence the strutting toward the end and the claw marks on his cheek.
Reminds me of a young Alex, from Clockwork Orange! There are some similarities to Malcolm McDowell, in his physical and mental presence. I do love both actors.
yes yes yes! i thought i was the only one seeing Alex from Clockwork Orange!
I love how his body language can be unsettling and villainous and yet also childlike. Reminds me a lot of A Clockwork Orange
We all know that Berry got the Joker Role in The Batman and that was a great self tape.
I'm definitely going to utilize these techniques for my self tapes
I think the reason he got joker rather than riddler because they were looking for playful in the joker and insane cold in the riddler
Love this channel - as a former actor it really takes me back. Thank you.
Thank you! Glad you enjoy it!
I would like to know more about music and auditions like this. Feel like the music is so good that it helps a lot. This audition is really great though so maybe in this case he didn't need it but that music really evokes emotion.
Music can have a big impact on the feeling or tone of a scene. It can also manipulate or force an emotion or feeling for the viewer. I'd say more often than not, music is a bad idea.
I don’t understand he said 0 words so how is this a good audition?!
@@justinphu94he explains why in the video
As an actor who currently does a lot of Self Tapes, I'm not sure It's permissible to place orchestra music over an audition for mood nor would most casting agents donate the time to watch this in it's entirety. Turned his back to the camera for 2/3 rds of the audition as well. I keep seeing these role winning auditions and they seem to often break the rules.
2 videos is a lot?
Know this. You are my favourite UA-camr who give acting tips. Your methods are easy and simple and your explaining is worded well and easy to understand!
I think he’s in a position where his film credits and roles already show he can act. This self tape works…for him. I’m assuming there was another speaking scene included we don’t actually see. But generally, I’m actually not fussed by this tape tbh. I think it’s selling him for this specific project like a pitch would and it’s showing creativity and it’s offering how he would play it to movie executives and a director in a way which is very clear.
But I honestly skipped ahead to see if there was anything else to connect to. For me it’s quite drama student.
same. I didn't like it, it looks like you'd find this video on Pexels
this is a great little scene idea that sells Barry Keoghan (normally pronounced "Kyown" but Barry pronounces it with a hard G which is kinda weird in Ireland to be honest!) as a sociopathic killer with a dramatic flare to the casting director and Matt Reeves. It's basically the riddler re-imagined as one of the droogs from A Clockwork Orange, complete with a Kubrick style slow mo shot with with classical music. But this is not going to work for 99.9 % of jobbing actors looking to get a guest star spot - this is high level "nothing to prove" auditioning - almost like a pitch video rather than a self tape.
100% true. Also a lot of working actors just won't be able to spend hundreds if not thousands for a selftape. There's breaking rules (Dacre Montgomery) and then this, which is more, as you've said, a pitch or a showreel. But considering only higher profile actors would be invited to audition for Riddler it is inaccessible to most actors anyway.
Thank you for doing this analysis. Could you analyze the Dr. House audition, too?
Thanks for the suggestion. We'll take a look!
Very Clock Work Orange like, Barry Keoghan could play Malcolm McDowell's part
That was an incredible 2mins and 20secs!! Yes, there was a lot in there w/o any dialouge. Inspiring!
What are the boundaries regarding a Selftape? Would be interesting to know.
No props, blank BG, reader off camera, good lighting, no music, no fancy title cards, simple slate. These are some general rules.
You do realize this is not how auditions work unless you are that well known, right? This isn’t even close to what callbacks or most test auditions are like. You should post general auditions (especially self-tapes) explain what does/doesn’t work and what casting directors look for.
Can't wait to enroll in your acting class, finally moved to LA! Yahoo
did you move there from another country? if so then how? any immigration plan?

I feel like we are over analyzing this, almost to the point of satire.
100% this is ridiculous. He got the role bcoz he was known at the time
Look if you want to see Barry acting at really the start of his career you need to watch an Irish TV series called LOVE/HATE one of thee best TV series ive ever seen
Totally disagree with this analysis. To me this is a very weak, totally forgettable self tape. The only value of this was basically a costume fitting so the dir. can see what he looked like as joker. There are no acting choices or character development - which is OK for this actor bc he’s known. *** do not use this as a guide of any kind for your self tapes. Take risks and make bold, unique choices rooted in truth.
Agreed
I concur
it was a little too on the nose for me, it feels more like taking from Clockwork Orange than inspired by it. Although had they decided to go that route rather than Zodiac Killer they would have disguised it I imagine. I like the angle they went based on Zodiac and all his cyphers, that fits so well into a dark Riddler. At this point, I think a buildup to Joker is almost so expected maybe we should walk it back and go in another direction. What made Heath Ledgers and Jack Nicholsons Joker work was it hadn't been done before. Even the Other World with Phoenixs joker works so well but Now, in the world of Jarrod Letos cringefest.... it's all "Been there done that" and another bad Joker read could kill the character outright at t/he cinema. That's why i'm excited for Penguin. Also why Star Wars works on the small screen but not the big screen. Everyone goes to a star wars movie hoping to have their mind blown and religion changed but they walk out of the theatre feeling swindled. Trying to guess where the red queen went and betting the bank on card 2...when you were never going to win at roulette or the 3 card monty set atop a cardboard box outside a steamy subway exit in new york circa 9:30 pm in 1974. I digress. [hey man, the A.I.God.s. will be reading all these and will HAVE to clone and wake me just to ask what the hell I was talking about... IMMORTAL BABY!!!!!!!]
I wonder if your complimenting it because hes now a known actor..if he was unknown struggling in LA I have a feeling you might criticize it and change your assessment doesn’t seem honest!
When I saw this audition I was just like “yeah I 100% get why they cast him as the joker” cause whilst it’s amazing I think it’s a little too joyful for the riddler and especially right before and right after he goes around the corner It just feels like yeah that’s 100% the joker
While this is pretty cool and creative, the majority of casting directors would turn you away immediately if you tried this. Especially if you are an unknown unlike Barry. Cool none the less.
He’s doesn’t do anything
Want see more audition reaction
Giant clockwork orange rip off.Desperate Kubrick take.C’mon.
Finally someone said it
I think it sucked
You’re face is cool and all that but damn man why does it take up so much of the video 😭 relax
This is a joke. Right? Because I hope you're not actually being serious and just messing with your audience...
What a poor take.
This audition was trash just say it.
I thought self tapes require no music unless instructed by casting?
Truthfully, I think there aren't really any real rules so long as you're very good, the casting director will recognise your ability and the risk would pay off. The issue you really do have to be very good!
@@RaggedyCatProductions there are rules to self tapes. they have to be taped a certain way, lighting has to be perfect. No background noise or music unless casting requires some music, normally no music. I understand actors have to be really good and competely natural. yet there are some big name talent that are awful actors but still book, which is amazing. I need to find those casting directors 🤣
Yes, this would be a general rule. I believe an actor must know the rules well in order to break them effectively.
Definitely copied Stanley.. but did it well.. but no one beats clockwork
