The Best Long Travel Period. RCLT HD. Ultimate Toyota Tacoma Build Episode 5.

- Today on Dirt Lifestyle we are installing the only long travel Toyota Tacoma kit designed specifically for rock crawling! The Marlin Crawler RCLT HD.
This kit has a lot of steps and is more work than your average Tacoma lift kit... BUT for folks like me that love rock crawling this is the best kit on the market for us. By sliding the suspension forward, you gain a lot more room behind the front tire. By installing the 200 series steering rack you gain a ton to steering strength and by lengthening the control arms we smooth out the arc of travel! And that's not even mentioning the giant increase in durability, more suspension travel and the opportunity for a tiny scrub radius.
As someone who builds this kind of stuff from scratch I have nothing but respect for what Marlin Crawler has accomplished here. YOU WILL SEE ME BUILD LONG TRAVEL FROM SCRATCH ON A FUTURE BUILD and when you see the amount of work involved you will understand why I'm so appreciative of what it took to design something with this many moving pieces.
How does it compete with a straight axled 4x4? We will all find out when I put it head to head against my 2021 Gladiator later this year...

Hello DL fans! This is BigMike from MC! First, let me say that you gals and guys are truly supporting an amazing brand in Dirt Lifestyle. Nate is a hell of a great guy. He and his family are really good people. I see a lot of my father Marlin in Nate: Honest, humble, and hardworking. To other manufactures, Dirt Lifestyle is really great to work with I can't recommended them enough!
Thank you to Nate & Jessica for the incredible hospitability and treating me like family! I will never forget this trip and look forward to many years of wheel'n and hanging out together again!
Thank you from BigMike and the entire crew at Marlin Crawler!
I expanded on our Q&A by adding many more from comments here to our website: www.marlincrawler.com/RCLTHD/FAQ
If there is something else you'd like ask then let me know and I'll get it added to our site!

I used to live in north Fresno and saw Big mike in his rclt taco on 40s on my way to school all the time. They truly drive these rigs and I love what Marlin Crawler is doing.
Huge Marlin fan for a long time. Can’t wait to get my tcase doubler adapter ordered!!
Hey Mike, I'm considering the RCLT HD vs a SAS and really like the clearance this kit provides. My question is, how good are the installation instructions? I just purchased a Tacobox that was advertised as " Hand-built in-house and ready for installation! " which sadly isn't the case. I've scoured the internet to try and find out which holes need to be plugged and which need to be left open and can't find anything. The last thing I want to do is install this setup wrong, fry some bearings, and then have to remove it and replace parts simply because incomplete instructions were provided. It boggles my mind that a product costing thousands isn't supplied with anything but a couple of pdf files from Inchworm that are incomplete. I'd hate to spend thousands on this RCLT kit and wind up scratching my head with a pile of parts and unanswered questions because of poor or incomplete instructions. If you could simply take a picture of each adapter set up for the vehicle it was designed for, and ready for installation and put it on your website it would really help.
BTW my truck is a 2015 Tacoma TRD pro with the 4.0 and A750 auto trans, so if you have a resource you could point me to it would be appreciated.
As a Jeep owner. I've really like the tacos, but trying to find content I like on them is far and few between. Can't wait to see this thing in action.
You hit the nail on the head with this comment Shawn.
Coming from a 4runner owner.
100% agree with you here - i own a gladiator here - but allt he work in this video so far seems like the same amount of work required (or close to it) just to do a SAS swap - highly skeptical its as robust as something like a dana 44 .... but interested to see for sure.
Same. 4Runner owner here, mostly watch Jeep stuff. All the late model Toyota stuff seems to be just driving on dirt roads, setting up roof tents, and making coffee.
Coming from a 3rd gen Tacoma owner, there is not much content that a set of 33” tires and a front locker can’t tackle on the extreme side. Once they get a doubler in this truck it will be an even better channel to pay attention to as that is one of the most over looked problems with these trucks in my honest opinion.
@@nicks1134 check out Timmy the Toolman channel! SicMods for T4R!
So cool to see Big Mike helping out! Marlin Crawler are legends in Toyota rock crawling scene. Such a great family and it's members are extremely helpful.
Nate, around 8:08 where you ziptie the two lines to each other you really should ziptie them loose and add another ziptie between to isolate them from eachother. This will save them from chafing and also give a bit of flex between the two.
Can't wait to see more of this build!
Those of us who love our 1st gen Taco's can only dream of a kit like this. The demand is not great enough for it to become a reality but I can keep on dreaming. Anxious to get your take on this after you use it for a while.
Same with the 3rd gen 4runners... wish we had a kit like this
@@EliasMK46 3rd gen 4Runners and 1st gen Tacomas share an almost identical front suspension setup (different lower ball joints/sway bars/etc) so I'm honestly surprised they cancelled their plans to release a kit. But at the same time a lot of people with these older trucks SAS them instead. Harder to justify solid axle swapping your $40K+ 3rd gen Tacoma.
2nd gen dakota owner, can’t find shit for it. I’m not trying to do any rock crawling, but from small things here and there I have to get a shop to make everything custom.
I think part of the issue is finding a 1st gen Tacoma's is getting harder and harder especially in 4 wheel drive
Very enjoyable vid. Jeep guy now, but many, many years ago was a Toyota guy. In fact, had a fun conversation with Marlin and the guys at KOH a couple years ago. Where Marlin gave me grief (in fun) for selling my awesome beloved '63 TLC, to which I had no legit answer! Still kicking myself today! Lol.
I like solid front axles. With that said when I first heard about this kit I was so pumped and I don’t even own a Toyota. Why? Because it is so cool to see companies like Marlin Crawler innovate and get more out of the IFS design than ever before. Ifs gets a bad rap (specifically on technical trails where more articulation is needed) because pretty much all automakers (including Toyota) use tiny little control arms that severely limit the travel and thus lead everyone to believe that ifs by nature has sucky articulation which just isn’t true. Great work Nate and great work Marlin Crawler! I can’t wait to see the end result!
Tons of info here! Thank you for doing this. Wish that Marlin would do a RCLT for the Tundra.
I love how more channels are starting to be more open minded towards IFS. Thank you for showing the pros and cons. People have such a severe bias towards solid axles and I hope that getting more information out there can help remedy that.
On my channel I’m doing a TTB build and people couldnt believe I would swap out my stock TTB for another, stronger, TTB rather then doing a SAS. Most people just dont even see upgrading IFS/TTB as an option, its solid axle or nothing.
@Paul M this is what I’m talking about 😉. Id urge you to open your mind a bit. For one, it depends on what type of offroading you do. If you look at prerunners, trophy trucks, and even ultra 4 cars there’s obviously a place for IFS in those offroad disciplines which is why they use it. For pure rock crawling solid axle can have some advantages, but most people dont spend ALL their time in the rocks!
@Paul M i wouldnt call it a jeep killer, horses for courses. However my build one of the reasons Im using IFS, specifically TTB, is because its cheap. I got a 3/4 ton TTB front end, 9” high pinion ring gear massive manual hubs and all for $200 at a junk yard whereas the solid axle equivalent would be at least $1,500 where I’m at.
As for the lift on mine its custom radius arms and springs/shocks, same stuff youd want for a solid axle (although I did choose to fab my own radius arm design).
It isnt for everyone but it definitely deserves a bit more love than people give it IMHO! A bit of creativity can go a long way.
While I'm a solid axle guy it's great to see innovative companies building better components for IFS. I've owned several IFS rigs in my day but they just couldn't take the abuse of hard wheeling and rock crawling. This kit changes that and I look forward to seeing what they can take. Between your rig and a buddy having his pro done as we speak I'll get a chance to watch the beating. Lol. I may have to grab an IFS if these kits last. Thanks for sharing.
Just more innovative and industry leading ideas / products from the Best Family / Company in Toyota Rock Crawling. Thank you Marlin Crawler..
Marlin Crawlers is a great local business to Fresno,CA they sponsor local 4x4 clubs, poker runs, charity events... and make killer yota stuff. Even as a jeep guy they have earned my local respect. Happy to see them get some good publicity in the youtube world. Wish you the best!
I think about 10-20% of commenters don’t actually watch the videos because nearly all their questions are in the video . Great video as always .
Mike's Dad is a legend!
Never been an IFS fan but you can tell that kit is the real deal, I cant wait to see you try to break it nate!
Did not expect an appearance from Big Mike, super cool.
This is not IFS, its just not. This is the evolution of IFS. Its like saying my jeep has control arms. There's regular arms, then there's upgraded long arms, and they're totally different. This kit is insane. I don't even own a Toyota OR an IFS, because of all the normal excuses, and this kit just got rid of them all. That underside clearance is nuts, I bet that suspension travel is gonna be equal to that of 90% of ANYTHING that's going to be on the trail. The wider stance helped the angles, you put clearance bends in the arms, jesus I love it!!! In 10 years from now, I'm confident people will look back at this moment and realize this is when IFS changed forever. The Australians are going to have a FIELD day with these kits, and I'm sure of it.
Thanks for the badass video
Absolutely love seeing someone else taking a serious look into making these trucks able to tackle more then a muddy fire road.
Great info. I have watched RCLT stuff for a long time. Big time game changer.
Hell yeah!!! So excited for the upcoming videos! love to see Big Mike on here! I've watched every video on marlin crawler channel probably 12 times each! I can't wait to get some of their products for my 2nd Gen taco and hit the trails.
Fantastic Q&A at the end! What a sweet build! Appreciate all the knowledge you are sharing Nate! 👍
Thanks for the awesome video, Nate. I learn so much and your positivity is what keeps me engaged. Keep up the great work with this channel.
Mike seems like a great guy, I spent some time through the years looking at marlin crawler forums, and they seem like good people. Sooner than later, I have some parts I need to order from them.
Now RCLTHD the rear and add a few taco boxes lol that would be insane!!!!!!
Another awesome video, I've been looking forward to seeing this for quite a while. I especially like the Q&A at the end, as a Toyota owner it's very encouraging hearing about the strength of the front diff, I honestly did not realize they were that strong.
Thx Marlin & DL!
Keep crawling!
That was awesome!!!! Really educational and helpful to someone like me that knows very little about the ifs stuff
I appreciate the Tacoma content, I have an 04 that I swapped to one tons during the forum decade (ttora, pirate4x4). Lockers, rear radiator, Oba, truggy cage, but not many Tacoma people are out there posting videos. Myself included. Thanks, I hope you can keep up with content!
This is one of the best channels ive found for in depth info in language anyone can understand
Thank you!
Thank you for the video and questions and answers.. Cool to see the install and listen to the person who developed it..
Thank you. Love the return to white board. My favorite of you videos when your class is on
Thanks Nate! After seeing endless bashing of IFS, Which I have on my Ford Ranger, it is a delight to see you invest in the RCLT upgrade for your Taco & hash out the particulars in the open. I'm now motivated to see what I can do along these lines for my Ranger.
Full size aftermarket TTB. Best for Ranger swaps, that is not a D60 lol.
Bronco gets the same hate. IFS is better than Solid axle with the right parts. But it is alot more money to build unfortunately.
looks insane! can't wait to see the taco progression.
That's sick. Love the beefy parts for IFS.
This episode is super informative. I dislike people that try to fame shame, makes zero sense... Put in the work, its not free.

Bad ass looking kit. I wonder how it'll stack up strength wise vs a D44/D60 swap.
My struggle with IFS is in your link. The cost of the system is extremely prohibitive when compared to a high quality lift for a solid axle vehicle to end up with similar, or perhaps better performance for the solid axle system. This is a sick suspension and I’m stoked it’s out there, but to say it’s changing the game relative to solid axle is pretty optimistic.
@@phild9813 Well if you consider the cost of a new lets say Dana 44, with gears, lockers, knuckles, shafts etc... the lift is well within reason even with the steering upgrades and RCV axles. Junkyard options are obviously significantly cheaper, but money wise, I'd say it's pretty comparable.
Yeah, true. I guess my dispute is more with factory options. Lifting IFS effectively and with longevity is an order of magnitude more expensive than an IFS, and it still isn’t even as good on the trail crawling once complete. It is most certainly a more comfy ride though.
Ok can you talk to rclt and look into what you’ve done here for GM ifs like my 07’ Silverado. I know there are lots of long travel builds but I don’t recall seeing a cool rack upgrade like this Tacoma build.
Awesome content Nate, taco will be fantastic. It was really great to see the developer of the system in your work space turning wrenches with you. The final product will be amazing. Hopefully both of you will be in Moab in April and I will see your vehicles in person.
This was an awesome video, answered so many of the questions I had and it was really good to see how the front goes together. Was very curious about the rear axle too. People definitely don’t give enough credit to Toyota rear axles too IMO, they’re pretty tough but 38-40s are always an equalizer
RCLT is so awesome! It Takes ifs to the next level changing the game! I was seriously having a hard time deciding between RCLT and SAS'ing.
It was a difficult decision but I chose to SAS my 3rd gen taco. Found an awesome fabricator who got all the electronics and ABS working with 1 ton axles. No errors on the dash and speedometer works just like oem. I couldn't pass that up.
So I wouldn't say SAS is obsolete. It's just getting started for these 3rd gen tacos.
Wow! This is an Awesome video. Can't wait to see more.
Great video. Looking forward to seeing where this ends up. Not into crawling myself but appreciate the engineering.
Finally something to keep up with solid axels! Thanks for your hard work! Keep it up dudes🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Awesome that Mike has put 40k mile on his setup. I would think having big spacers or aggressive wheel offset would be worse for the unit bearings than big tires. OEM bearings are designed for a specific wheel offset by the engineers.
Such a great video Nate. The gladiator you have is an absolute beast on 39”! The Tacoma after this mod be like hold my beer! 🍺 you are gonna love this thing. And with that much clearance at the front it’s going to be the new deep snow king for sure!
Looks like a truly dynamic kit, Rock on !!
Great video. Really interesting to hear Mike talk about the kit.
So stoked for the turn out on this thing!
Insane not only did you score the best ifs lift you got the legendary Big Mike to help install 🤙🏽🤙🏽
I've always wanted to build a custom long travel IFS on something like an S10 so it's really cool to see an actual kit like this.
Awesome video.. such great chat

As always, great video. Thanks for all the detail.
Great video. So entertaining and educational. Appreciate all the effort!
Excellent video. Great info. 👍🏻
ElTaco Diablo super jealous.
The nice thing about guys with channels like this, getting stuff from manufacturers is that the general public/consumer gets great access and information from numerous sources.
If you don’t think like it, maybe you can quit your day job, buy all the tools and start your own channel and the manufacturers will hook you up “in no time.”
I waited for a while on mine but ended up going SAS on my 07 taco.. Just pulled the transfer case to do the NORTHWESTFAB 6:1 low range kit.. Very stoked to see you wheel this kit!
Awesome video, man.
The whole video series on your Tacoma has been awesome, you have approached it in the correct way not just, Oh what the hell , I'll show ABC on it and go off roading and kick the crap out of it and then try to claim warranty like so many people do, anything offered from Marlin Crawler for Toyota has been tested and engineered beyond what the factory does, thats why there is an aftermarket ,all anybody has to do is look back to the very first days of the
BAJA 500 , this just about the biggest history of the beginning of the off road aftermarket here in North America and the rest were made at home in a garage shop like Nate's place, a welder, farm supply drill press and an electric drill, they didn't have cordless back in those days, can hardly wait to see your Tacoma out on the road and rocks being tested , it should be a ton of fun. awesome video Nate 👍
Thanks for watching brother 👊
@@DirtLifestyle always Nate, so my best to never misses an episode
Great video very informative . I really want to do this kit on my Tacoma . I've been following marlin crawler for a long time with the development of this kit for our Tacoma's.
Thanks!
This has opened my mind to what I "should do" to my wife's new 2021 taco. :)
Break the saw 🪚 out
I own both a late model JK, and a 1st Gen Tacoma.
I’m loving the channel.
I would be all over this install!!!
Cool stuff. Great info, well analized
Wow what a badass as set up!
Like what I've seen and as usual ideas that time's have come in the new parts Mike👍👍👍
I’m a Ram guy. But I really like the Toyotas. This looks awesome. Definitely has me rethinking things. Great job on the install. Excellent content sir. Dave from Fla. Be good or Be lucky!!!
Thank you!
Go drive one before selling your ram, you will hate the powertrain in the taco, ask me how i know
The Ram is fast, but the Tacoma is better suited for off road.
Love my ram for all daily, towing and general wheeling. I’ve had tacos and could get in and out of trouble a lot easier than the ram. But the ram is a better daily. I’ve got my taco on 1 tons now- with the less desired ram axles.
Looks so good!
Super pumped on this build!
Great series and overall great channel can’t wait to see more !
Thank you! Happy to have you in this little community brother 👊
You, sir, have just acquired a new subscriber. This is fantastic.
This is absolutely insane
The yota love is real 😍😍😍😍😍
Loved the vid man.
Good gosh, this thing is a monster! COOL! I want one!
Psyched on this build!
That is sweet. I see mikes truck around town sometimes, it’s a beast.
Maan this is going off the Hook Nate.
My friend has an marlin crawler case in his Old toyota Hilux from early 90’s anf it works flawless. Theese Rcv are soo on my wishlist for my ArcticTrucks. They actually do some of the same upgraded knuckles as your kit.
Now Im not beeing able to sleep
All the best again From Norway.
And If you one day want to go on vaccation up North in Norway..give me a call 👊
That looks awesome.
Wish they would develop one for the 200 series . 💪🏽
Just really great info, Thanks again for another great how to, looked pretty easy and straight forward.

Big Mike is cool
Looks really good Nate 💪🏻👊

For sure IFS is the future. Look at most off road race vehicles. Even the New Ford Bronco with the 35" and swaybar disconnect. Having a good road driving vehicle along with an awesome off road capable rig, is a win win. Can't wait to see the Tacoma hit the rocks. Love the design of this setup. Great job.
It could be the future but no truck company can make IFS even up to par with a Dana 30. They all use twigs for steering components and the CV axles still snap Crackle n popin.
@@RobSteez
Just not true. Look at the king of the Hammers or any Baja race. The Ford Raptor doesn't break shafts.
Most built Jeeps now use the Dana 44 with built up modified components. The Dana 30 needs many add on in order to hold up with big tires and rock crawl. Jeep guys live in the past. Why does Jeep not install 35" from the Factory? Maybe for durability, ride and fuel economy?
Ford has 37" on the Raptor now and next year on the Bronco. Where is Jeep? Most Jeeps with big tires and built for crawling get place on a trailer and towed to the trail. Why is that?
Man you guys rock!
awesome build! epic truck!
Cant wait to see the beast hopefully around pnw
Absolutely!
I have an 03 sequoia that I’m going to SAS. Biggest reason is strength increases in every component. If there was a way to upgrade to a bigger front clamshell I’d probably not be considering the sas.
Makes me want a Tacoma!
Love this build. Just leaving a comment to help out the channel. 👍🏻
you know you could just say love this build without saying the rest...
Thank you for the support my friend 👊

I’m the first human and equipment into “the cut” to make it so cranes and bucket trucks can make it to “the pad” through wetlands and granite ledge to access the work. So I drive a lot of deep mud and knarly rock daily….but also drive 50-100 highway miles to get there. Yes I could just buy a raptor….but I LOVE tacos. And want a raptor killin’ taco. My dream is a 2020+ with sunroof and heated leather (lol) on 37’s with 5.29’s arb’s front and rear. And a magnuson supercharger. 17x9 Fuel warp w/beadlocks. Falken wildpeak at3w/bfg at KO2’s, or Goodyear wrangler mt/r Kevlar sidewall. The last being first choice, the other two at’s are the only 3mtn peak snow rating and I live in New England. Money money money.
Damn Nate, I can't believe you was working in that weather!
I live near Enumclaw; I was inside my home as much as I could be! 🤣🤣
Hey man this is awesome! Dope garage, great skill set!
Thanks brother 👊
very interesting setup, i dont like the way the steering gets a kink in it when flexing but it seems solid, i agree about the rear axle too, throw a locker at it with some 3" spacers and its done. i cut my IFS off many years ago(older style 7.5"), but just upgraded to a 6' wider solid axle from TG last year, that extra width is super nice.
Looks owsome. 👍
Cheers. 🍻
