Wow, this was incredibly informative and relatable. The biodynamics concept reminds me of how I grew up on soul food back in the USA, which is cooking with feeling and connection and it takes time. I've also learned a bit more about my small houseplant collection as well. It's great you had this experience and thank you for sharing it with us. This farm is doing amazing things.❤

Jan, you can try using trap plants like nasturtium which aphids and whiteflies will gravitate toward to reduce the pest pressure on your houseplants. When you see a nasturtium is infested with pests you simply remove it and dispose of it (Do not compost!) to eliminate those pests and reduce pest pressure on your other plants. Nasturtium flowers, leaves and unripe seed pods, which can be pickled and used like capers, are edible and taste peppery.
A trap crop for roses to capture Japanese beetles are Four O' Clock (Mirabilis jalapa) plants.
Pinguicula (Butterworts) and Drosera (Sundews) carnivorous plants are small and capture many tiny gnats and flies indoors.
My grandmother who was raised on a farm used the phases of the moon to plant crops by. Basically, in the dark of the moon (waning) you plant seeds or starts for root crops and in the light of the moon (waxing) you plant seeds or starter plants for crops that are above the ground. I tried planting by the moon phases and it works!

takin g note for my garden... weirdly i grown most of the plants in my yard that she mentioned.. basil, elderflower (love it as a hedging plant got all 3 type, black elderflower, variegated and the green), iris and other ancient herbs to control pest (companion planting) so i totally agree...

Learned something about one of my own plants, Sambucus Nigra Black Lace 😁 I don't know if cultivars have the same properties, but I'm not planning on brewing my own Sambuca anyway 😜

I worked in a factory that had Jurlique as one of the clients. Their jobs were always the worst, because some of the components had to be hand-loaded very fast and you had to stand very stiff for hours to do it correctly.
Nothing against these guys, I am just having traumatic flashbacks from reading this name lol.

Biodynamics is not evidence based. I commented earlier but I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt and say it got deleted by UA-cam because it contained a link to a journal on an external site. I recommend anyone reading this look into biodynamics and the lack of evidence behind it. It’s effectively organic gardening with made up stuff thrown in. There’s no evidence that it actually has any improved outcome compared to organic gardening
My understanding is that it is organic farming (which is a good thing right ?!), self-sufficieny, forming a connection with the land(which i obviously can’t evidence in a research paper) … I can’t fault any of their practices & clearly a more sustainable practice than conventional modern farming :) ultimately to me the importance is on the quality of their produce & how it was produced :)
Nothing wrong with organic farming no. Can largely be a good thing but a lot of it comes down to the misconception that something being natural is inherently better. This isn’t just specific to gardening or farming, but also applies to foods, self care products, and any number of other things.
Self sufficiency is fine too but that too can and does stand alone from biodynamics. Self reliance and self sufficiency can play into sustainable practices in the context of gardening because it requires the management of resources and the maintenance of available land. This can look like many things but often different permaculture practices like hugelkulture come to mind.
Forming a connection with the land is fine too. That comes down to individual experience and personal spirituality largely, and can help motivate sustainable practices and influence the kinds of decisions that get made by the gardener, but is an internal thing and again is not unique to biodynamics.
Some of the concepts of biody, or there being leaf days vs root days vs fruit days, or crystals harnessing cosmic energy and influencing the plants simply aren’t based in evidence. I’m not trying to talk down to anyone, police the actions of individuals, or even say anything negative about this place or your channel(one of my go to plant channels btw), I just want people to know the reality of the efficacy of biodynamic farming.
If you or anyone else still want to practice biodynamic preparations that’s totally fine and I won’t make any attempt to stop you, but I encourage that you do it because you enjoy it and find it fulfilling, rather than for the unsupported claims of improved outcomes over organic gardening. I’m the context of modern life time, money, and energy are precious resources that can be very limited. If people want to invest those resources into this because it’s fun or interesting or they like it that’s great, but what I don’t want is for people to spend those resources hoping to get what’s promised by the tenets of biodynamics when the evidence indicates there isn’t a measurable impact.
I really recommend looking into the history of biodynamics and what the biodynamic preparations actually entail. There’s more to it than organic farming, self reliance, and forming a connection with the land. There’s a central certifying body that certifies farms as biodynamic when certain conditions are met, and many of these things require extra resources in the form of time, money, and energy and offer no observable or testable benefits over traditional organic farming and caring about and maintaining the land.
As for your last point, if by conventional modern farming you mean large scale monoculture with indiscriminate spraying of pesticide and herbicides and poor runoff management then yes, definitely this is more sustainable, but the things that are unique to biodynamics aren’t what make it sustainable. A practice of theirs I could fault is using biodynamics as a way to market their products as if there’s something extra special about them. The reality is if you made the same products just with traditional organic gardening without the unsubstantiated parts of biodynamics you’d get a pretty much indistinguishable product. To clarify I’m not saying they’re bad people, or even that they’re knowingly marketing based on misinformation. I get the impression they really care about what they do and really believe in how they do it, but that doesn’t change the fact that one of the main pulls for their products over others is not evidence based nor demonstrably impactful.
Anyways sorry for the essay of a response, just trying to provide an opposing view point and spark thought in whoever may read. If they end up not agreeing that’s ok, but I want people to have a chance to see the other side of things beyond a neatly tailored talk on the supposed benefits of biodynamics.
Btw unrelated, but congrats on the recent shift to doing this full time. I’ve learned a lot from you and Brad and I hope more people follow along in the future to do the same :)
Edit: just realized the first paragraph was vague as hell. I was trying to articulate that while there’s a lot that can be good about organic farming, that good doesn’t come down to a direct comparison of “natural vs not natural” and that there are many practices that could fit under the umbrella of organic farming that could also have a strong negative impact on the environment. Organic gardening isn’t perfect, and it’s not better because it’s natural, and depending on application it may not be better at all. Lots of subjectivity and grey area

Lenghty reply! Thanks for the info & understand where you are coming from! You clearly feel strong about this topic! There were no claims made in this video that biodynamic growing is superior to organic growing etc. it’s purely introducing a concept & terminology to people so they can take away from it what they want :) nobody is forced to do anything & yes, as always, I encourage people to form their own opinions rather than blindy following advice :) I personally would not replicate all of their practices if I were to set up a farm but could certainly be inspired by some of the concepts :)
Seems like we’re largely on the same page then. I don’t feel too strongly about biodynamics as an individual thing but I’m very science minded maybe sometimes to a fault so I find myself having discussions like this pretty regularly lol. And yes my bad on if I implied claims like that were made in the video, that wasn’t my intention. Just knowing this would serve as a first introduction to the topic for many people I wanted to try and provide some balance to that introduction. Appreciate it :)
