When I was at school in 1976 our music teacher, Mr Moor asked us to bring in a record and we could listen and then dissect them.
Everyone brought in all the chart stuff in....Bay City Rollers, Slade, stuff like that.
I took ELP Brain Salad Surgery.
He looked at me and smiled.
We ended up playing the entire album and a few of the kids spoke about the pictures it evoked in their minds, but the others who were only used to hearing catchy pop music just sat there looking confused.
From that point on Mr moor (Mick) treated me completely different.
We had many one to one discussions about classical and prog-rock.
He would hand me the keys to the music room at lunch time so I could get the drum kit out and play.
Take a pebble is one you will definitely enjoy.
    ✌️❤️🇬🇧

You don't hear ELP one single time and understand/love it. It takes time. The more you hear it, the more you understand/like it. That's what makes deep , dense, creative and bold music that stands the test of time

ELP were giants in the field of progressive rock, garnering global recognition because of their emphasis on complex compositions, stunning live performances, and technological innovation ... The band wrote complicated arrangements that borrowed from classical music, jazz, and rock and roll. The results were extraordinary.
For instance, when the album Tarkus (1971) was released, the title track was a 20-minute, multi-movement concept piece, based on a 5/4 time signature, that epitomized compositional dexterity. Decades after its release, Tarkus has been adopted by orchestras around the world as part of their repertoire.
As well, the album Brain Salad Surgery (1973) featured “Karn Evil 9,” a 30-minute track broken up into three different impressions. As proof of its lasting impact, this prog-rock classic will serve as the inspiration for an upcoming sci-fi film.
But the power of ELP’s compositions elevated during live performances ... Songs like Pirates take the listener on a musical adventure on the high seas. Pictures of an Exhibition and Fanfare for the Common Man were perfect examples of how ELP fused classical and rock music to near perfection.
From 1970-1977, ELP changed the musical landscape by breaking all the rules. In the golden era of progressive rock, the group was the ultimate musical expression. There were simply no limits to their creativity. - Excerpts from Ottawa Life Magazine 2020

Have loved this band since mid 70s First band I saw in concert, never looked back. Haven't heard this one in too long.
Saw Carl in concert recently, he's just amazing, a drumming machine.
If you ever get to see video of some of their early shows you'll see showmanship that has never been equaled. Keith on his flying keyboard, Carl behind enough percussion instruments for 3 people. You have to see to appreciate.

When this album was created, synth's were still coming into their own in the prog rock music scene. This particular Moog55 synthesizer was expensive and had issues with live performance, where in the studio the patches and the sound could be controlled. Production techniques were evolving and processors and reverbs were now in an experimental stage. The beauty of this track is not only in the brilliant performances, but the power its sounds and audio prevailed through the piece. Emerson was an incredibly talented musician, composer and keyboardist and as with all ELP recordings, the adventure continued here. Yes.. the piano beginning of this composition is beautiful in contrast to the bombardment that followed. A lot of flavors...but the melodic content remained in tack with the exception of the very last part of the song.
Regardless of taste...this is music that will never be duplicated again and I appreciate your video putting it out to the people.

They have beautiful songs and very forward synthesized music. Very broad spectrum of music. You would love Works Volume One by them. Entire album is with a seventy piece symphony. Keith’s piano is beautiful, Greg’s vocals are beautiful, CeLaVie, Lend Your Love to me tonight, and Closer to Believing are amazing and would change your mind at least in their soft side music. They are immensely talented, however, they were trying to create rock and roll technology into a new era.

Prog Takes a bit of getting used to and not everybody likes it. I was 16 years old when I bought this album along with albums from Yes, Pink Floyd, Genasis and Tangerine Dream. Keith Emerson RIP was one of the great keyboard players of the era influenced by Jaz and Classical music Along with Rick Wakeman of YES (Classically trained) and Tony Banks of Genesis (also Classically trained) I loved Prog it was always a surprise you never knew what you were going to get. they experimented with time signatures, discordance and alternate chord structures all influenced by every music genre that had come before Classical, Jaz, Blues, Rock, Folk and every music culture Middle East, African, Asian and indigenous cultures. All the members of these bands were very highly skilled musicians and composers.

Thank you for this reaction, Andrei and especially Dominika who stoically endured the torment. I am 67 years old and during my life I have met many people, who cannot help but feel uncomfortable with much of EL&P's music even in this era where ideas are more open, which is, of course, very respectable. Can you imagine what parents and grandparents thought when their children heard this in 1972? You're crazy?
Much could be said about this work, but I am sure that those who love this music, as I do, have read more than one analysis by people much, much more capable than I am.

The song is called "Trilogy" for a reason: 3 distinct sections with their own rhythmic structure. If you want a song that only contains the softer, melodic guitar-oriented structure of the first part of "Trilogy" you might want to listen to "From the Beginning", "O Lucky Man", or "Sage".

The late great Keith Emerson was a master of tension and climaxes. He is already considered an important 20th century composer. With unique cord progressions, musical patterns and some beautiful melodies. He had some early music lessons but was primarily self taught. Not classically trained, he often caught derision from purists. On stage his left hand often was like a 4th band member. An amazing talent who lived music. He took his own life in 2016. His severely injured right hand prevented him from playing up to his standards for years. He was about to go on tour, opening in Japan where he was treasured. His long term partner feels he took his own life for fear of disappointing his very loyal Japanese fans. She came home to find his body. His life long battle with alcohol and depression may also have been a factor. UA-camr Anthony Cornet, a classically trained pianist, did his doctoral dissertation on Emerson. I would highly recommend his piano recital of some of Emerson's solo piano works. ua-cam.com/video/4PGyhpzq6tE/v-deo.htmlsi=tCD7hMe9zuPlNvwX
A few of my favorites. Prelude to Candice, Soulscapes, The Dreamer, Outgoing Tide, Nilu's Dream.

Think of this song as being played by a symphonic orchestra. Strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion make up the different colors of sound, if you will. The composition is meant to give you the illusion of a huge band, although it’s only three musicians.

Keith Emmerson is the modern expression of Mozart. Your partner is totally missing it. Stay with it. Such a brilliant mixture of musical expression. I'm a musical child of the 60's up to the present, and I had a jazz musician mother as well who made sure that her three boys had traditonal musical band instruction and beyond. Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart would have so appreciated the music of ELP>

As a 14-year-old, I saved up for this first ELP album after we heard the album PATE based on Mussorgsky at school. The synth back then was simply from another world, a futuritic sound that had never been heard back then, later used in films, which other younger people recognized. As a 14 year old, it wasn't chaos, it was just ... . But give up ELP and keep listening to “Ramsch”stein and co; they hurt me, especially the ideology behind them ... . An ELP attempt was worth your try; with PF, Yes, Genesis, LZ, DP, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley etc. my favorites back then, which are still there today. Good weekend!!!

This piece is a combination of Classical, Jazz, Ballads, and Progressive Rock. ELP were the only band to mix multiple genres of music together, into one piece of music, selling out Soccer Stadiums back in the 70's. They were, as I recall, the first "Super Group" of that era. I don't think we have a group today that can be described as a, "super group."

I guess she doesn't dig Keith's Moog and synth work.
Greg Lake, the bass guitar and vocalist, has one of the best baritones in rock history. Smooth, powerful. He started with King Crimson as their lead singer when they formed in 1969, then joined ELP the Super Prog Group in 1971. These 3 are all stellar musicians at the top of the Progressive Rock food chain. Many of us cut our teeth and discovered "Progressive Rock" via ELP in the early 70s.

When it comes to ELP, generally speaking, people either really like them or they really dislike them, and one tends to figure out very quickly which side one is on. And I've never seen someone move from one side to the other. They're one of those few bands that work that way. The Mars Volta is another band like that. ELP are a really two-faced band. They have songs for die-hard progrock fans, which are not easy for the first-time listener, and then they have really catchy tunes, which I'm sure you both would love, but they weren't suggested for you 🙂 and then there's the in-between, where they take you to progrock world, but do it in a way which everybody can enjoy. I suggest trying The Endless Enigma (all 3 parts), or Take a Pebble, they are perfect in-between songs, I'm sure you would love them 🙂

You have to keep your mind open to jazz and classical music influences in ELP music, or you will never get it.
Keith Emerson, "that keyboardist" stated when he formed ELP that "he wanted to do for the keyboards what Jimi Hendrix did for the electric guitar."
Someone is steering you to difficult ELP tracks to start off listening to. You should have been given ELP suggestions like this to start slowly:
    1. From the Beginning
    2. Lucky Man

Then progress from there. Listen to suggestions from people who know where to start with a difficult band. There are too many knuckleheads out there throwing out silly suggestions to try to impress people or something.

I love this song, and this is my favorite ELP album, but I understand that it's not to everyone's taste. Others have mentioned, and I'll echo, that you may like their radio-friendly songs, "Still, You Turn Me On," "From the Beginning," or "Lucky Man." You may even like "Jerusalem"!

ELP is an acquired taste, but you must give them one more chance. Watch the live video of Karn Evil 9 1st Impression Part 2 / 1974 California Jam. Carl Palmer is one of the best drummers who ever lived. He does a drum solo in that song that will blow your mind. He's the only surviving member by the way.

They will not appreciate that. We've got too many people throwing out their most demanding stuff. That's just silly. They have to be eased in.

@kbrewski1, agreed. They obviously don’t like synthesizers. They should probably try Greg Lake songs, more their speed

In my comment, I suggested From the Beginning, Lucky Man, and then Pirates from the Works album. Its a longer epic tune, but more orchestral so I think they could handle it. Plus its a great tune.

I like your honesty Dominica. I have been a fan of ELP since they started. I think some parts of their compositions are intentionally disturbing, whilst others are simply beautiful, such as the track " Take a Pebble " - on the same album.

    P. S. If the keyboards in these are "too much" - you might try their song: From The Beginning....what keyboards they have in that tune: are very different....I think you might enjoy that one!!

I think you both would much prefer some of Emerson, Lake and Palmer's more mainstream hits like "Lucky Man" and "From The Beginning", as well as Greg Lake's "I Believe in Father Christmas", which is frequently heard on the radio this time of year.

While I agree that the beginning section is the best part of the song, I love the entire song. But if it's not for you, no one should be offended. They should be grateful for your honesty. Keith Emerson was one of the pioneers of using synths, and if you don't like synths (I hate a lot of modern synths myself), you're not going to like a lot of their music. ELP isn't for everyone. 🤷‍♂

It's ok to not get it...ELP experimented with fusions of many styles and uncommon sounds and seemingly discordant time signatures and like this piece, not a little jazz stylings. Thanks to them and their fusions over the decades since 1970, I've gained a much greater love for jazz, as well as classical... their adaptations and interpretations of Bartok, Ginastera, Holst, Grieg, Mussorgsky, Copland and many others were simply masterful...
But, to each their own. 😊🤷

Nice to see honesty when you don't like a song or artist. Most of ELP will not be for you, HOWEVER based on what I have seen on your channel you would like "Lucky Man" and "From the Beginning" by them. Much gentler easy listening songs without the wild keyboards.

Could be a generational thing, plus as prog bands go ELP are even more a "guy's" band than most others (except perhaps King Crimson.) Why I like this song is -- yeah, there's a nicely romantic front end, something ELP didn't do often but which they usually did well. IMO the piano transition to the proggy section is clever, and then I think the synth-y 5/4 riff is pretty cool. 1972 was very early days for synths in rock music and Keith was better at coming up with interesting synth textures than many back then. I agree the transition to the next section (still 5/4 but it feels like 6/8+3/4) is a bit clunky, and it's an example of how prog songs could sometimes feel taped together. The best have that 'suite'-like feel, but are more than the sum of their parts. "Trilogy" might not reach that height for some, but it works for me.

EL&P could create some lovely music. They were great at incorporating classical and jazz elements into their brand of Prog Rock. Expert musicians. They could bring the energy! And the melodies. But they did like to use that '70s Moog Synthesizer that may be 'offensive'. (I also find that moog sound tiresome)
Check out their 'Fanfare for the Common Man' cover of Aaron Copeland's classical piece. Dramatic. Energetic.
