      I’ve gotta second that, I’ve read a lot on the PID loop and it’s functions but until I heard you describe it in relation to error accumulation and time I never really grasped the tuning process effectively. Thank you for putting into words what my brain couldn’t. That’s the clearest explanation I’ve ever heard

    I'm new to FPV (about 2 months of actually flying minis) and I've been searching for a while for how to tune my quad to get a better feel out of it. I've watched about a dozen videos and nothing has come close to this in terms of explaining things in terms that I can understand and have flight video to demonstrate it. I feel confident in being able to start tuning after watching this. All new pilots should watch this. Thank you so much!

      @@TimmyRC I recently build a 10" quad and I am having trouble tuning it using your guide...
      Main issue is: It oscillates a ton when flying straight forward. Stock PID settings are basically useless as the quad will bounce/feel very loose straight away.
      Bounce backs are notoriously hard on Pitch Axis while Roll has been mostly ironed out, Pitch requires a ton of D in order to keep the bounces in check, Yaw will make one end of the quad dip down hard which I fixed by reducing P a lot in the Yaw Axis.
      Its been around 10 packs now and the tune is all over the place basically I do not know how to tell apart bounces from using too much P or too Low P motors are running stone cold regardless of settings..... I will try tomorrow using all of your recommended settings (Anti-gravity, D Min, etc) configuration instead of using Betaflight´s.
      Any hints? I tried reducing filtering (Sliders to the right) but it only made it worse, I tried the slider to left and it helped with the oscillations.

    • @TimmyRC
      @TimmyRC  4 роки тому +2

      @@skirmich Betaflight's default settings are basically tuned for a 5 inch quad, so keep in mind that the ideal PID values for your 10 inch quad are likely going to be far from the default values. Reducing filtering to try to cure oscillations usually will not work, as you experienced. You may have more success with the old-school tuning method:
      1. Work one axis at a time.
      2. Turn all PID values for that axis way down (literally 2 for everything should work). Your quad will now fly horribly.
      3. Increase P until you feel that the response is good. There will likely be oscillations at the ends of fast movements, which is fine since D is almost 0. If the oscillations are excessive, turn P down.
      4. Increase D until you get rid of most of the bounce-back. Be careful with this because if you add too much D the quad will feel sluggish again.
      5. Increase I until the quad is "locked in." Two tests for this: If I is too low, if you bank the quad it will start to level out by itself as it gains speed. Also, if I is too low, the quad will wobble significantly when descending at partial throttle straight down at a moderate speed.
      6. Make tweaks now that all the values should be close.
      You can also try reducing the PID looptime to 1kHz, since really fast looptimes are excessive, especially for larger quads. Also, more filtering with lower cutoffs may be required since your quad is larger. Make sure your props are balanced. Also, Blackbox is your friend for diagnosing issues.
      Lastly, keep in mind that tuning can only compensate so much for low-quality electronics and a crappy setup/configuration. Frames that are not stiff, low-quality ESCs, lack of "breathing room" between props, and lack of soft-mounting are common issues that make tuning much more difficult, to name a few. So if you find that you've tried everything tuning-wise and nothing is working, look for issues with your physical setup.

    • @skirmich
      @skirmich 4 роки тому +1

      @@TimmyRC Thank you so much for the in depth response! really helped me a ton with the knowledge I got from your video and now more information for proper tuning, I will try all your recommendations in my next flying session, I have the blackbox data (Mamba F722S Has on board memory) But I am a complete noob regarding black box analysis, I have to learn about that as well.
      I tried again today using your recommended setup for Anti-gravity, D-Min,, I Term, etc and it flown much much better but I still cant lock it in... I recorded a small video highlighting the issues and at the end of the clip I show the current PID tune in the OSD for that particular flight: ua-cam.com/video/fi5Ld6aXRJM/v-deo.html
      Basically the main problem is still hard oscillations at the end of quick turns it also feels very sluggish on the slow turns I have to jam the stick hard in order for the quad to respond but its guaranteed to bounce back at the end of the turn not so much on Roll but its pretty hard on Pitch... Yaw I think is controlled now and Roll is Acceptable but Pitch is still problematic... It also drifts when flying straight forward.

    • @TimmyRC
      @TimmyRC  4 роки тому +2

      @@skirmich Doesn't look too bad judging from the video, but of course I can only tell so much from DVR video, so take what I say below with a grain of salt.
      The bounce back doesn't look that bad to me, especially for a 10 inch. Definitely worse on pitch, though. People like to chase their tail trying to completely get rid of it, but your favorite pilots don't necessarily tune it out, they just fly around it (same goes for propwash).
      "Feels sluggish on the slow turns..." To me sounds like a rates problem, unless your rates aren't that sluggish on other quads. In that case add more P.
      "Drifts when flying straight forward." Double check that center stick is as close to 1500 as possible in Betaflight. If so, add more I.
      I should of mentioned this earlier, but larger quads usually need higher I values. Even on my 6 inch my I values are around 100. I would try around 110-150 and that should help you feel more in control. That was the only big thing I noticed about your PIDs.
      Lastly, there is no getting around the fact that this is a big quad with big props. You are never going to get the same responsiveness a lightweight 5 inch can provide, so just make sure you have reasonable expectations. Even my 6 inch quads aren't quite as responsive as 5 inch, but for me it's worth the grip and speed 😎.

    Thank you so much for this video.
    I really appreciate how you stripped away all the more, shall we say, "advanced Betaflight options" so that we can tune from the ground up. I was in the process of attempting this on my own, but your video was WAY better than me turning feedforward down to 25%, and limiting my throttle. :)
    I am new to the hobby, and am having issues that I believe are due to tuning. My quad has already shown an improvement, on the bench, that I am pretty sure will translate into actual flight. Responsiveness with props off is so much better already.
    Much appreciated and thank you brother.

    Nice explanations. FYI, you can save lots of time doing all of this in the OSD while you disarmed. Left stick left, right stick up gets you into OSD. Then right stick up, down, left, right, navigates in and out of menus.

      Thanks! I usually tune through the OSD, but I don't have a DVR so I had to use my computer for this video.

    I’ve seen a lot of tuning video’s that claim “tuning made simple” and it seems no matter how they explain it... there’s never anything simple about tuning a quad. U have 6 different settings in all, and it always becomes a cluster “F” in my mind. Like “TMI”. But this is a personal problem. That being said u did a great job explaining PID tuning. I’m now closer to understanding how to tune. Thanks.

    Thanks for this. I just flew my maiden tonight. The nerves were out of this world. Did ok. The simulator was the trick. I'll try tuning her soon.

    very good vidéo and really well explained ;) but important for me: is the pid setting for a thrue X frame. not for others configurations. in stretched X (motor to motor stretched on the front) for exemple, you have to put more p gain. and if it is streched on the pitch axis (motor to motor stretched from the sides), like charpu frame, is inverted. you have to decrease P gain.

    Here's what I got out of this:
    P = rates (kinda), i.e. sensitivity
    D = noise cancelation/dampening, more D gives you less bounceback but also more "lazy" control
    I = locked-in feel, adjust for whether you want to float on air or on rails

    Hey Timmy first off - Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I continue to return to it, stripping down all of Betaflight's advanced settings is a WONDERFUL thing, especially for me, a newbie. As I progress and get better at flying, I'll explore those advanced options like antigravity, feedforward, etc. Turning them off made me feel way more in control - it is behaving exactly how I want now.
    Second - I don't know what you call the move you did beginning at roughly 30:35, but it is freakin incredible, I rewound it like six hundred times and still can't explain it to myself - you have some pretty awesome skills there brother - peace!

    Really excellent. Plenty of good practical guidance here, which is what I needed. I think that a little line-of-sight oscillation would be worth showing. Also a very quick introduction to the hardware - quad and TX. Worth mentioning that these parameter values can be changed on the fly - even in your OSD. Right off to tune tune tune .. Thanks!

    Great video bud! Very well done. This is the first video I've watched about tuning that actually made sense and I've watched all the big name guys and gals explain tuning. All of their videos made me feel less secure or even scared to even trying tuning, but yours hit home with very simple explanations and great examples. Again, well done!
