  • Trinity Base Camp Footage LA UR 21 32088
Enjoy a glimpse of life at the Base Camp for the world's first nuclear test! Base Camp was approximately 17,000 yards from the detonation point. Although you won't see them here, dignitaries such as General Leslie Groves, James Conant, Vannevar Bush, Rita Hayworth and Enrico Fermi witnessed the test from the camp.
…ok, just kidding about Rita Hayworth.
There is also some footage of the compression crater caused by the blast, the main control bunker, the Jumbo containment vessel and lots of footage of diagnostic lines.
WARNING: despite its historical value, this film may induce motion sickness! I suffer from motion sickness, so let me know how it ends!
AND AS ALWAYS: many thanks to the excellent motion picture film archivists at Los Alamos National Laboratory who made this footage accessible.
Love one another: it beats the alternative!

People think that any nuclear bomb just vaporizes everything around for miles, but there's Jumbo, standing tall, right along side plenty of twisted steel beams from the shot tower and even WOOD beams strewn about too. Most things outside of the shot cab itself survived fine. It's surprisingly easy to see the stark delineation between the dark melted trinitite and the surrounding desert sand and dirt in the last few frames.

Yes interesting how jumbo landed ! How could wood survive the thermal pulse ? That's strange being so close to the zero but it obviously did !

I've never seen this footage before. I did slow it down to 0.25X speed to make it closer to actual speed. It might have been my dad behind the camera.

Interesting. I wonder what the story is behind this footage? A lot of it falls into what I'd call 'happy snaps' rather than anything documentary, and the person behind the camera doesn't seem to have done much filming before. But, even with that, some amazing footage.
