Welcome Duchess Rebekka. I will be planning on attending the populace meeting on September 6 2022 for Barony of Loch Soilleir in the Kingdom of Ansteorra. I'm a history fan and looking forward to it.
A few years ago I had already started working on creating my persona with time, skills, occupation, time, education, knowledge and other details. I can't seem to find the yellow legal pad I was using. I'll keep looking for it but will likely have to start over.
I hope all is well in the Barony of Eldern Hills.

I love this! I will share it with the newcomers to our Barony (in Atlantia) until we can get one made of our own.

Hello there! This is a wonderful overview of the SCA with one exception. The SCA encompasses every culture in the world pre-1600, not just Europe. I hope that the audio for this video is updated to reflect the more inclusive nature of the SCA today.

I am definitely interested in seeing what SCA is. I'm local to Mid-Michigan, more specifically: between Midland, Bay, Saginaw, & Tuscola Counties, as well as surrounding counties. I would very much like to gather more information about this group and the SCA! A friend of mine does "Dagorhir" which is a variant of LARP, but I'm not certain I'd want to participate with foam weapons and shields, and 18 gauge (maximum) thickness metal armor, for example. This (SCA) looks like something I'd be more interested in, for sure, but I'd be more comfortable if I had more information and/or be invited and able to show up at a meeting or event.

You can get lots of information at sca.org and most of the kingdoms have their own websites too. There should be a list if events, and you dont need an invitation, just show up. They are one of the most welcoming groups I've met.

Civil War/WWII reenacting >SCA. However, I'm curious to try it.

Civil war is genuine re-enactments, very exacting. The Society for Creative Anachronism is more aptly called "living history".

So it's like reenactment but without the actual history.

It's better described as "living history". Re-enactments are often very exacting to historical standards and often occur on location of the historical event that's being re-created. The SCA is more of a hobby and accepting of a learning curve. Both of these are excellent practices, with different methods.

so its like a big LARP ?

    • @bjf10
      @bjf10 7 років тому +8

Sort of. SCA members might have a particular time and place they recreate, or even a "persona" story much like a LARP character. One of the big differences is that there's no separation of self and persona in the SCA. In a LARP you can play an evil person, but if you're a jerk in the SCA, well, you're just being a jerk.
The SCA is a "big-tent" organization, meaning we have a very minimal bar to entry (only an attempt at a pre-17th century costume is required), and people join it for all sorts of different reasons.

I realize this question came from two years back, but I hope to clarify. The SCA likes to say that "these are the Middle Ages as they should have been", meaning there is no peasant class to abuse, no religious/cultural hatred, nobody gets leeched over minor fevers, and we get to enjoy the comfort of toilet paper...In terms of "persona" (who you are in the SCA), this is not a role you put on like in LARPing, it is more like "you as you would have yourself be". Mainstream society does not often reward honor, generosity, humility, or the glory of heroic effort. The SCA has a counterculture element in that we are trying to create an honorable society for ourselves, and truer versions of our values in ourselves.

Pretty cool but you aren't doing historical Reenacting. I love the SCA but it is a portray of the idealized romanticized version of medieval history and in the battles you are using wooden weapons and whatever armor you want rather than sticking with a specific time. Look up the Vikings of North America handbook the rules on clothing and armor are incredibly strict because they are accurately portraying the time. I do love the SCA but don't call us reenactors they are different.

The Emperors Executioner that's why the SCA is a Recreation group, not a Reenactment group. We recreate the middle ages "as they should've been", as some people like to say. We still learn history without having to take part in things like slavery, torture, misogyny, etc. Just because there are elements that aren't 100% historically accurate, that doesn't mean you aren't learning anything. There are levels to this society other than historical recreation. It's a community and over all a HOBBY (aka for fun). Chill.

One of the strengths of the SCA is that you can play- whaatever level you're at. You aren't excluded if you dontw have a perfect kit yet. You learn as you go. I didn't start out as a Laurel- i grew into it. It's about the journey, not the destination.

Everyone describes the SCA as if it were a historical society. It isn't. It's a fight club with medieval flair. You could drop every bit of medieval flair and the SCA would still continue, still have a king, and men would still join to beat each other up with stuff and wear armor of some sort. But if you dropped the fighting and tried to keep just the medieval flair, the SCA would cease to exist.

I only just found this video. It has been a year, but I hope that I may be able to share a different perspective. HEMA developed in America over the last decade or so, and the SCA remains about the same. LARPing culture allows the escape of fantasy with various flair, and yet the SCA remains about the same. More than other things, the SCA is a subculture. The pursuits in fighting and Medieval flair are heavy limbs to this tree, but I believe that an honorable society where people can be the truer versions of ourselves remains the trunk and roots of this tree. Usually, some of the more bitter critics of the SCA have had a limited and unfortunate experience where the local core lost this. They may honestly say that they saw petty politicking, cliques, drunken debauchery, etc. This pushed them away, but what happened to those groups, I wonder. My bet is that they would have lost members and failed, even if they had great fighters and wonderful Medieval flair. They lost the subculture.

Not a bad video, but the voiceover is weak. If the narrator sounds tired and bored, you lost the effect.

Get a fighter to do the voiceover. Somebody who cares, who puts power and tone behind their words. Find yourself a proper herald, possibly re-order the script a tad, aside from all that the video’s... acceptable.
