My first bushcraft kit. Spoiler alert, it was CHEAP!

  • The first bushcraft kit I ever assembled. Being a broke grad student, I did not have a lot of disposable income, in fact, I had none. Using Dave Canterbury's bushcraft on a budget series I gathered this equipment and started my bushcraft journey, almost 8 years ago, with a minimal outlay of cash. I also show you some of the first upgrades and improvements I made to my kit as time and money (mostly money) allowed. Hope you enjoy my trip down memory lane.

I started with a lot of military gear that I had from the AF. Poncho, liner, paracord, AF survival knife, canteen with cup and cup stove. Bought a cheap ferro rod and started small with Wally world purchases. You're doing great.

Thank you! Everyone is at a different place on their journey. I don't have a lot of extra income to spare so it's fun to try and come up with inexpensive solutions to show others that it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.

Thanks for sharing this. We all start somewhere…most of my beginner gear was scavenged and bought at the hardware store.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. The main thing is to get out there, learn some skills, and practice practice practice! Thanks for watching!

Great video! I have a Schrade similar to that one you showed, as well as the Condor Bushlore. My bushcraft/bugout/camping pack is stock with similar items. In fact I have had a guy on my channel ask me to do a review of what is in it. I know my pack probably is a lot heavier than yours, but I keep it in the truck, so it has a lot of stuff that might get left at the truck depending on the situation that I am planning on at the time. You can find a lot of good things at the Dollar Tree, clearance at Walmart and even Harbor Freight and as you mentioned Goodwill. Thanks for sharing. Juddie - J & J TOA

That Schrade is a monster but great for heavy duty chopping and splitting tasks. Not gonna lie, most of my bushcraft adventures happen pretty close to my rig so I'm not overly concerned with the pack weight, usually. And yes, I frequent the local Dollar Tree, Wallmart, Harbor Freight, and any other hardware/farm/box store near me. Always looking for good deals! Thanks for your comment!

Very true. I still use parts of that kit to this day.
