- The genus #Mammillaria is sometimes taken for granted by many cactus collectors. While they mostly produce small flowers, they do so profusely creating a halo or a crown of flowers on top of the cactus. Flowers vary in size, color and shapes. The shape of the cactus and the various forms and colors of the spines likewise make the Mammillaria an interesting genus to include in one's cactus collection.

I have five Texas nipple cactus that I started from seed in 2018 . They are 3 1/2 inches tall and I’m getting at least five peppers ( seed pods a week ) I have replanted the first seeds they are slow growers and need to be in a moisture control container in the light sun/ shade. I live in southwestern Florida and the get the afternoon sun. They start out slow and you need to keep them in the light but not bake them.
I probably have 300 seeds just from this year , at my age/ health I’ll never see any more grow to produce peppers. Love you channel , been growing cactus for 11 + years. I gave a neighbor one bud off a prickly pear plant and it’s now 6 ft x 6 ft x 2.5 thick , he passed she will have it taken out 😪😪. Nice collection. Thanks and have fun

@@CactusCaffeine hi! My plants are mostly doing well. My ric rack cactus has tons of buds forming! I have never had deer try to eat my cacti but they are all close to the house and I haven’t seen deer come that close here. There is so much good forage nearby that they probably don’t need too

Mammilarias are fast becoming my favorite cactus. I have only been collecting for a short while so my collection is much smaller. We live in a similar climate, I am in California in an inland hot valley. When do you stop watering your cacti for winter?

I have 3 different types is mammillaria cacti
..old lady..clumpy one and the small ball one. Haven't bloomed yet.
Mammillaria are lovely and you have beautiful ones!
I learned too about some of them being able to regenerate from a tubercle when I was researching a few years ago on one of my Mammillaria I was trying to save for my Mum... luckily it had 3 heads lifting the end, that are still alive now which used to be a massive clump...in the end didn't need to use the tubercles 😄
Mammilarias have blooms i liks and iv noticed that blooms in these varieties stay for quite fair long, right?

I'm always pleasantly surprised by the variety of mamillaria that show up in stores around Vegas. Even those big pots from the box stores are a pretty decent deal. Although the I'd rather buy a bunch of small ones off the 3 dollar rack at star, lol
Most of my Mammilaria came from Star Nursery or Home Depot, too. They started out small and most of them did not have names. I had to wait till they flower before I could ID some of them. 😄

By the way, if you're not saving those pepper-looking mammilaria fruits for the seeds, you can eat them! They're completely safe to eat, and they taste very good. Depending on the species, the fruits are either very sweet, like a lollipop, or they are sour-sweet, like a Starburst candy. By the way, I've unfortunately lost a few mamillaria to rotting as well, specifically in the spring. From what I gather, if you water certain species too early in the spring, before they're completely out of dormancy, they'll rot. I lost a few early this year to rot due to me overwatering in early spring, I'll be more careful next year. I live in USDA zone 6. I keep all my cacti outside, when temperatures are above freezing. I keep them inside for winter. It think it was too much of a shock to them to be watered as soon as I started leaving them outside in early spring.

@@classyfoodtime1759 Are you saying it's wrong to eat the fruit? That makes no sense. A cactus will make hundreds of seeds a year. So, you can save some seeds, and eat the remaining fruit. Or do you also think that if someone grows a garden, it's wrong to eat any of the fruits or vegetables, if they plan to save a few seeds for next year's crop? By the way, the reason fruit tastes sweet, including cactus fruit, is to attract animals or insects. The animal eats the fruit, and spreads the seeds elsewhere. So, cactus fruit is meant to be eaten. It is completely natural to eat the fruit.

They will fruit only if the flowers were pollinated by bees or butterflies. 🙂

Hello I was wondering if some cacti seeds are brown, when I collected the seeds from my Mammillaria, the fruit was ripe and came right off, there were about 30+ seeds. Mammillaria Densispina. The seeds are not squishy, what’s your opinion? My question again is, do some cacti produce brown seeds?
Hi Anna...got a question for you. Ii have 2 parodia cacti in a pot together and one isn't doing too well...its not rotting. So should i remove it out of the pot and repot it ? I dont know whats going on with it... It bloomed in April and its outdoors right now.
Also.. How many years can a cactus live in a pot before its time to repot to a larger pot? Most of mine are small 4 and 6in pots...i also have 2 blue torch in 4 in pots. Help me out..its fall now and im not repotting till next year.

Any idea on the lifespan of Mammillaria? I didn't have much luck looking it up. The reason I ask, I ordered some Euphorbia, and I read after that they have a lifespan of only 4 or 5 years. I'm new to cacti and succulents... my first year growing them.

It depends on the type of cactus. Rebutia blooms even at 2 years from seed. Some takes many years. Certain columnars need to be a certain height before they flower. I
