Jim, with old people keep it simple. Perform these steps: 1) "I'm a fraud investigator." 2) "Turn off your computer." 3) "Here's how to block the scammer's number." 4) "Do not answer unfamiliar numbers for a week."
With ANYONE, keep it simple. Everyone under stress starts tunnelling and you need to break through it with concise and direct information/directions/orders (as the case may be).
To deal with strangers once you are already on the panic. It is not an easy task. You have to make people make the right decision. Call a friend or family member they trust. If no one send them to the right place. Whatever it is. Police or Bank. But Jim, you won't be able to save them all. You have all my respect for your work with the second victim. You did all that you could. You are doing good work. Thank you for doing it!
It's funny when the scammers talk to Kit and Pierogi like this but when you know it's a real victim on the line, it's too heartbreaking and gut wrenching to hear. 😢 Great job exposing these creeps and building awareness.
“IF YOU TOUCH YOUR COMPUTER I WILL TAKE ALL YOUR MONEY AND NOT GIVE BACK A SINGLE PENNY” *a couple seconds later* “I’m not threatening you, I’m informing you”
The way that guy spoke to that first lady is shocking. He's an absolute creep and should be in jail. It really made my blood boil. For the second call, you did great. The Police should've just called the guy. They're at fault. You're a hero Jim 🙏🏻
@@paritoshd I thought about this too. Jim reminded me that they're using a script... An aggressive one - that's for sure. So I don't know. He sure seems very very real and convincing to me though! I'd say off the phone he's not so tough.
@@KarlRock most people who hit their wife are not so tough off the phone either. But yeah, the script. The other guy in the background was not this aggressive.
I'd say when calling the victims tell them that you're a youtuber since you tell them your name anyways , also if you could get hold of the scammer's pc then try to open google maps or something to get their location , if that doesn't do much then spam em with some ransomware like wannacry or something , I've seen many youtubers do this .
After seeing this happen to an elderly person close to me, seeing her life savings ripped from her, and watching her pass a broken, poor woman…. I love your efforts mr browning. Do not stop what you do, these people have no mercy, or empathy for the vulnerable. You’re a hero
all scammers are garbage and not human especially this dude shouting at old people he might have hearing complications and he shouts his lungs out like a dumbass hurting both victims.
Jim Brown talks too gently. Scam artists, with heavy Indian accents, seem to be better at persuasion. How? Shout, sound confident, and make the message very clear: "GO TO TARGET NOW, BUY $500 GIFT CARD, OR LOSE ALL YOUR MONEY!"
Jim, if you're calling the victims, I'd suggest to strongly emphasise the fact that these people are criminals/thieves, trying to steal money. Most elderly people (with all due respect), like the second victim, may not understand all that gift card thing and how the scam operates - it's a lost cause. You should state clearly that the scammers are criminals, and should not be listened to.
Agreed. You need to use simple 1950's language. "Criminals" is good. "Fraud" is another. "Trying to take advantage of you" and "cheating you of your money" as well. Also I'd ask if they have kids who can come to the phone. I also like the term "con man" as it's kind of retro and very much the language of that generation.
I know it's racist, but i wonder if you could realistically say "Hang up on anyone with an Indian accent." Everything else gets so technical. Some of these victims have trouble _using_ a computer let alone navigating a scammer's interference.
@Jeff Sol Yea you're right, looks like I myself got fooled into believing a fake quote. But hey, at least it didn't take much to convince me I was fooled.
In my opinion, it's only really a failure if you let the mistakes you make pressure you into stopping your work. You may have failed to stop a single scam in that moment, but you can't let that stop you from saving others!
I would have tried to say something like “if you don’t know who to trust just remember, one of us is asking you to spend $5000 and the other one is begging you not to spend that money”. I’m not saying it would have worked but I would have given it a go.
Sometimes it is so frustrating to watch. I wish there were computers with an elderly mode, and no online banking for certain people. So sad that the man has no friends whom he trusts.
If I ever caught or found out someone talked to my mum that way I would track them down and they would be having hospital food for the rest of their life.
Trouble is the police accept bribes and these evil scammers hide behind legitimate companies, and these evil scammers are based in India. And some behind dangerous organisations. The only way we can stop these evil people is to inform our relatives, friends and elderly neighbours, and give them our phone numbers and say put the phone immediately down and call us when they have these evil scammers calling them and not to call any numbers before speaking to us first.
Damn he's not even trying to be polite or pretend like he is an actual tech support specialist. This is one of the most disgusting scams I've heard in a long time.
Re: Thomas, repeat after me: 1. I'm an investigative journalist, you were just talking to a criminal. 2. You need to turn off your computer. 3. You need to ignore their calls. 4. You need to call your bank. This mantra is how you'll stop the scam. After the scam is stopped, then you can work on preparing them against this happening again. Trying to do both, at the same time, with people who are computer illiterate/old and confused/caught off-guard/scared/all of the above, will only yield confusion.
Its fair but he did say all this. I think the only way he could've helped him was when he asked for guidance to litteraly give him step by step instructions and perhaps teamview with the man himself to undo all what the scammer did. The man was clueless and the threats from the indian man probably really frightened him.
@@CaptMorpheusZ It is in the way he said it. Ian said it more laid out in point form. Would have been easier. Whereas OP was reiterating over and over which only led to confusion on the old man's part. Step by step would have been great if the old man didn't take off away from his computer. He needed to head home and turn off that computer and block the scammer and ONLY listen to OP. Being distracted by the scammer constantly calling could not have been helping the old man keep any advice straight in his head.
@@angieskidney I agree the non stop calls and threats surely must've gotten in his head. In the end the strategy for these people is scaring them into doing things, which seems surprisingly succesfull. I just hope the newer generations won't fall for these kind of scams.
@@CaptMorpheusZ it's actually just come out that people in their 20's get scammed for more on average than the elderly. This is likely due to a false sense of security in their knowledge, limited life experience, and being more proficient at getting funds.
I agree, a simple, straightforward approach... if they still stumble... "please, look up the bank's number right now" 'read the number to me so that I know you found it' 'now call that number as soon as I hang up'
I am in the exact same moment that he said that line while I am reading your comment, And I've never been cringed so hard in my life because of that scammer's accent...
I've been watching scambaiting videos for 3 years now and this is the first time I feel truly uncomfortable hearing a scammer speak (maybe because I know he's talking to a real victim). I felt like the poor man was being held hostage over the phone, so to speak. Absolutely disgusting and infuriating. You're a hero for exposing these evil people and for the amazing hard work you do. Greetings from 🇺🇾
EXACTLY!!!!!! How is this not more obvious to people? If they could just take your money like that then why in the hell would they need u to go buy some fucking gift cards to reimburse them?! Lol it’s fucking madness I swear to god. Also wtf was with that bs the scammer tried to say about the “company” policy of not being able to send anything less than $50,000?? 🤣 LOL yah okay, seems perfectly reasonable....🤨🙄😑🤦♀️
@@saskialolita lol. yep I was thinking exactly the same things. These scammers are so dumb. I won't call the people being scammed dumb, because I know that with the stress of being told that you'll lose your life savings your brain can switch off/
Origin story: Jim was once a victim of the scammers from India as a young adult and then devoted the rest of his life to learning the secrets of the virtual world to become the Batman of the internet.
He was probably pissed realizing how smart he was yet falling victims. That’s how I felt too. I came so close to almost getting scammed years ago. Been calling up fake tech support numbers harrassing them ever since lol.
I started watching scambaiting videos through kitboga and him getting scammer reactions through his ridiculous antics is so hilarious, but hearing real victims and these bastards just yelling at them just hurts my heart… just so disgusting
I resonate with this deeply, I laugh like hell at KIT he is HILARIOUS!! but then I Feel guilty for laughing when there are real pp suffering greatly! God bless all these scambaiters for the amazing, super hero work they are doing!!! How messed up is it, we live in a world where the Scambaiters COULD be persecuted for what they do, and yet the cops could care less about the BILLIONS being stolen from our own ELDERLY citizens every day!! We are to protect them, not let them fend for themselves!!! smh We have to do better!!
@@MindMagick222 Don't feel guilty. As long as we take the information we learn and talk to all our friends and family and everyone we can, about the scams, we can laugh and be entertained. There are days I have to walk away from the computer, even watching Kitboga's streams. Sometimes they'll be a scammer who's cadence or attitude just makes me so angry, that I can't watch. Thankfully, I haven't heard scammers as cruel as this one in a while, taking away the ability to SYSKEY took away a lot of their disgusting power. Unfortunately, now they have Zelle (there was a Senate hearing a few weeks ago with Bank CEOs about fixing Zelle) and CAN transfer money.
All so they can buy their ray-bans an IPhone and fake brand clothing. They not only get money in such unethical way they spend it in fvck1ng stupid sh1t.
I feel the same... The worst part of this is that for some reason (not generalizing here) a lot of young Indian people are o hot headed it can be intimidating when they're shouting at you like this so you just obey. I've been there, thankfully not part of a banking scam, but more sadly also a real life situation x.x after almost 10 years I managed somewhat to get out of this mess, but the mental damage is there and It does keep me frozen when a stressful situation happens. Please Jim! keep it up! we need someone who can stand up for these victims when they cannot defend themselves! Maybe even recruit more people to do this, so that army of Jim Brownings is keeping are safe :)
to be honest it's kind of funny hwo they act like a saturday night magician card show: "loot at your account, do you see the number ? right it down." "now look at it again" [...]
hi Jim, I know this video is a bit old now but I'm just getting around to your channel. I'm trained as an EMT ER nurse and ICU nurse. i see a fair bit of trauma and shock and the second guy was in emotional shock from all the yelling from the scammers. My advice for the future would be when you get his attention, don't hang up. just be there, you don't have to talk a lot you just have to block the line and protect him from the incoming harassment. do this until they can regain their composure. then in slow small steps walk them through the process of fixing it. it may take time, but walking them through each step of what to do will be much more valuable than explaining everything quick and fast. one saying I always think when I'm flustered is that this is not my emergency, I here to help. if you can slow down and never leave the phone I think you can prevent this from happening again. You're an amazing person and I wish I had your skillset. keep doing what you do. contact me if you have any questions about talking to people in emotional shock.
I might have tried Social Services after the police. They might be better placed to just go and check on him and make sure he's OK? Once there they can perhaps guide him towards the right decisions as well
This is a wonderful response. It is thoughtful and shows a lot of empathy for people in that situation. It's very good advice. Thank you for offering it
I think the calmness in your voice and that you kept talking was what was making it hard for him. I've learned (working customer service) sometimes the best thing to ask is "what is it that you don't understand?" It also might be helpful to have another person you could turn to to explain something. Sometimes it might be your word choice and having someone else to help could be helpful on so many levels.
@Phleet Gaming IDK....seems like the guy in the background that was running the same scam was saying the exact same things, so I'm guessing that they are either given the same scripts.....or they just hire narcissists in this call center :-)
@@MutarFuqueer Both. It's both. Because how could ANY decent pere9n hear someone break down and cry NVM multiple people multiple times a day at their hands and NOT FEEL like an asshole. These people are compassionless & maybe also void of empathy completely. It's scary to see such little humanity.
To give yourself some credibility, you could introduce yourself by saying "I am a fraud investigator". Technically, that's true. Then, like many others have said, keep it simple: criminals have gained access to your computer. You need to unplug your computer and visit your bank immediately.
That would not help in the case of target #2. He's probably been manipulated dozens of times and will continue to be manipulated again and again until he runs out of money.
Apart from introducing yourself like that though theres not much else he could've done, jim spent nearly 10 minutes talking to the guy reiterating the same thing over and over and even went as far as to call the local police. He cant give himself away to the scammers or he risks potentially saving thousands more and once one team of scammers works out how to block him they all will.
Agree. "Fraud Investigator" is perfect. Please remember when dealing with older Americans that may have limited comprehension due to poor hearing, mental health diseases such as dementia or Alzheimers, etc., and a lack of exposure to your charming accent, that clarity and firmness are needed. Be clear and don't beat around the bush. If I was talking to that man, I would have said "The Indian guys that are calling you about money are *crooks* and they're trying to stealing from you. They are con-men and dirty liars. Don't deal with them." This sort of clarity may seem inexcusably impolite to a person cultured in the U.K., but to an American, particularly an older man like Thomas, it makes perfect sense and they will respect you for being clear. Don't be so worried about manners in such a case. Also, please remember that there are next to zero social services or carers in the US that can intervene in this type of case. Americans have learned to watch their own backs and not expect any help, so be clear that you have the agenda of destroying these liars' ability to operate and you have the right to intervene. No one in the States will fault you for that, Jim. Keep up the good work.
I would suggest, also, that he suggest to call a non emergency police #311 with help with his computer. Im very certain there is a fraud detective that can help this older gentlemen set his computer right
Hi Jim, I work as a HelpDesk technician and I often times deal with older, tech illiterate people. Part of it is that you seemed to be giving him a lot of information all at once. I think he just suffered from information overload and just didn't know what to do with the information you gave him. I think next time, it might be more helpful to breakdown exactly what's happening here as succinctly as possible. Don't spend so long explaining the whole process to them, just emphasize that they're being scammed. Ask them what it would take for them to believe you, and work on their terms. Take it slow, and explain to him your credentials from the get go. Of course, you can't save everyone, but I think this might help with these more obstinate types.
I agree. Definitly needs slowing down. I would also add, periodically ask them to reiterate back to you so you can see if they're understanding what you said. All to often people might say yes to avoid looking ignorant, even if they don't understand. But fundamentally you want it to be 50/50 in terms of whom is speaking.
The first guy is absolutely disgusting and I really hope someday he’ll figure what it’s like to live an actual life that isn’t filled with ruining other people’s lives. It’s disappointing that people are so heartless anymore. Thank you for helping these victims sir.
I love how they think that a company like Microsoft or Google, or whomever they are pretending to be, needs to get their erroneous refund back in the form of gift cards... for Target...
How can he think this way: Jim doesn’t want him to buy giftcards. So he can only loosing believing the scammer. So even Jim would be lying, the victim wouldn’t loose anything if he stops following the scammers. I will get this never ever.
I love when they go from "you have to send me the money, I can't take it from your account" to "I've taken all your money because you're not cooperating". Like if it wasn't already clear they're lying... That's gotta be it, right?
Seeing is believing, and he saw the account balance reduced to $0. He believes Jim that it's a scam, but he also believes that he has to obey the scammers to get his money back.
Very true. To fool people you must treat them as if they are so intelligent and then cease the opportunity. But if you try to convince them that they have been fooled, its somehow like telling them that they are so stupid. People are strange: They like being called intelligent (even if its not the case).
Bro, wtf, if someone calls me yelling and trying to force me to do something, I will consider it completely sus. We have to teach our parents and grandparents about this stuff so that they are aware. Keep up the great job dude!
Don't be fooled, come back to the Dark side! But jokes aside, you poor sap.. you had it right in the first place and now you are going to need to learn that lesson all over! Human=Parasite We were presented with a fork in the road one was a path of symbiotic existence along side the many life forms on this planet and in the universe (alien life is statistically guaranteed) that was the road we did NOT take, instead we opted for path number two PARASITE which consumes and destroys ALL THAT IT SURVEYS! True there are a few stragglers left over... a few good souls, but they are a dying breed soon to be extinct (if not already). Don't let that upset you though! It is almost like it is built into the genetics of life itself, eventually our ways will catch up to us and wipe us out something fierce, the planet will recover so will the natural order of things and Terra Firma will have purged itself of a nasty infection AKA Humans. Keep in mind HUMAN existence from the first one born to the last one even if you assume the last one dies a thousand years from now, is not even a SINGLE percent.. NOT 1% of the history of Terra Firma, she's been around for a hell of a lot worse then some puny humans with delusions of grandeur, and she will be around for LOOOOOONG after we wipe ourselves out. So like i said... Come back to the Dark side brother!
@@edmeds1336 You said Jim restored your faith in humanity! I was duty bound to remind of how things are and to invite you back to the dark side! Is all. :-)
For now is right, go live with the humans some more see there ways then come back to the truth of the Dark side. Wonder if some kid is going to take this non-ironically ... oops lol
It's a human flaw, societal, but also genetic. Our willingness to keep up with the times diminishes over time as we'd rather stay "safe" with our old world views and norms. However, as much as I hate blaming the victim in any way, we're not typical animals and we've got the mental capabilities to overcome this deficit by ensuring we don't grow mentally old. Conveniently, this actually has been shown to reduce the chance of memory problems and other mental illnesses in the late stages of life due to active use for our entire lives instead of just our younger years.
Old people need to be reminded of basic facts over and over again and can't make new memories. They'll believe whoever was the last person they talked to.
@@CAHSR2020 No.. My old folks are incredibly smart and with the times.. I showed them this video and they are as baffled as me as to why the 2nd guy fell for it..

Jim's explanation was confusing for someone that's probably not all there.... The elderly man was basically doing whatever the LOUDEST person was telling him to do. Jim's soft voice and overly complex explanation likely just fell on deaf ears. Albeit I know Jim was doing his best to help this man, there's only so much that can be done when it's this stressful. Maybe Jim could work on his communication with the elderly. Fewer words, even lie for the sake of helping these people and later explaining when it's safe and over. Insane world we live in when people don't mind wiping out someone's entire bank account for their own gain... India isn't doing much, if anything, to stop these call centers. Much respect Jim.
Correct me if I'm wrong, Jim is able to see scammers screen and the victims screen(via the scammer's Teamviewer). He could take control and check the victim's id and password, shut it down. Then call the victim, let them know about the scam.

This is SO important! Banks should offer classes for customers about these criminals, their tactics, and what to do about them. So should police departments, retirement communities, libraries, senior centers, community centers, gerontology departments in universities, Kiwanis & other clubs, & houses of worship!! We need to be warning people we know about these scam tactics & how to protect themselves & others, & asking organizations to provide educational workshops until this ABUSE ends!
Unfortunately I have heard much worse than that. Many of these scammers are taught to believe that westeners are cruel and bad people, so they don't care how badly they treat their victims.
There’s another person who does this kind of thing that I watch, except he trolls them by making up characters and acting like them. Once he was an elderly man who needed all of the money in his savings for a life saving heart surgery and they still tried to take it. They’ve also tried to take food from children and scam the wife of a guy who recently died. These guys suck.
@@stellaoware4528 I can only imagine what filth they have been told to believe that would make them think it is ok to scam innocent people out of their money.
This was just heartbreaking to listen to. My advice? Request them put their neighbor on the phone ASAP. Ofc, ask for a family member first, or maybe a family member's number. I also don't think I would ever use the phrase "Don't take my word for it." The victim clearly needed to take your word for it, especially with the 2 options laid before them (2 callers.) You do great work, thank you.
Jim stop discrediting yourself when you intervene. Plz just introduce as," I'm a fraud investigator, I'm going to help you. Turn off/disconnect computer, contact bank, do not but cards. Once this is done, take in your computer and have it cleaned, get a good security" "don't send money, these are scammers based in India, they're evil, refuse any calls/block their calls" end of story.
@@jt.9003 The point I think he's trying to make is just, "don't trust strangers. For every good Samaritan there is out there, there are dozens, if not hundreds of others trying to take advantage of you, and the only way you can protect yourself is to trust the ones you know: a good friend, the bank's workers, the police." There isn't a Jim Browning in every call or email, there to protect you when you're not sure if you're even being duped, let alone how to protect yourself if you are. I think he was really trying to drive that idea home. Unfortunately, a lot of people, particularly confused or elderly individuals, respond more firmly to a black-and-white instruction of "what to do," rather than the gray area of "here are your options, and don't just take my word for it."
While a good idea. What Jim is doing is legally in practice illegal. If he were to claim to be something he was not and somehow (Even though very very unlikely) taken to court, he could be sued and arrested by the person being scammed possibly.
I work in a facility with 750 elderly persons. No matter how many times you tell them or how many ways you show them, they still fall for the same scams again and again. Don't beat yourself up that he did not listen to you. Being older he could only focus on one person/conversation at a time. Unfortunately the scammer had his attention. I understand about the Police not acting on your complaint as I've been on that side also. Just take heart in the fact that you've done as much as you have done which is more than 99.999% of the people in the world could do under these circumstances. Don't give up hope and keep up the good work. Glenn
He could be scammed again, maybe not his first time. Unfortunately technology got this gentleman into a lot of trouble; it could've been an unsolicited phone call or a dodgy link.
Jim, thank you for fighting against these scammers! As for my two cents…. I remember hearing Thomas asking you if there is anything you can walk him through and help him and you told him that you’re reluctant to do so because you’re a stranger to him also…. I think that was the moment you really could stop what was happening to Thomas, because at that moment he expressed his trust in you and invited you in…. Then again, I realize the fact that you have to think and process everything so quickly and decide what to do…. Still…you did everything you could that made sense to you at that moment. So, thank you!
Yes you right Thomas did ask him to help him that was one mistake Jim made and another one when he keeps telling Thomas you don’t have to take my word for it at that point I think he got confused
I laughed so much at this throughout the video, he has all her money but needs her to go to the bank to send him the money she doesn't have, the scam made zero sense.
I think it is very important that you clearly let the victim know that you work to stop the scammers, and have observed their actions as soon as possible, maby even advice them to call the police. You're doing great Jim! It is thrilling and exciting to watch you work. Respect👊🏻😎✌🏻
Jim, too much hesitation about "oh I'm a stranger" type lines- I know you're trying to reinforce the fundamentals they should be asking themselves. Appealing to common sense just won't work with someone so easily manipulated. But this type of vulnerable person you're saving has to be guided with direct, maybe out of 'Jim brown character' clarity. "There are Indian scammers harassing you to take your money, they have edited some numbers on your computer to look like you lost something, nothing was actually taken, call your bank to confirm this. If a guy with an Indian accent calls about this again, hang up, don't entertain it with any politeness' 'MY job is to investigate fraudsters like this and try and stop them mid-scam. Please listen, you have lost nothing unless you continue to listen to them.'
Right, he hesitates alittle too much. I would have gotten to the point straight away. He said “I will explain everything” , “just check with the bank before you believe anyone” at least 8 times. Repeating the same things over and over won’t help them understand any better. Going on and on, for multiple sentences, then the person saying “what?” It’s just a waste of breath lmfao. Cover one point, make sure they understand then continue. Overall he does a great job doing what he does though.
Sound advice, but some victims he's informed were too proud - or arrogant - to admit they're gullible enough to be scammed. One cannot save everyone all the time.
100% agree. The old man he was talking to clearly was too old to comprehend what was happening, and to try and instruct him to call the bank or how to uninstall team viewer was an impossible task. The only reason why the scammer won was because he was more loud and direct, while Jim was more passive and polite. I also think that trying to explain to an old man such as this, that Jim himself, hacked the scammers computer and saw and heard everything, would be beyond the mans comprehension. I don't know if it's the correct or honest thing to do, but if I were Jim, in this situation, I would have called the man and told him that I am fraud prevention rep. from his bank, and that his bank has detected common "fraudulent activity from India." I would pretend to be his bank and reinforce that there have been no actual transfers out of his account and that it was all just a trick on the scammers end (similar to what Jim did) and that he needs to ignore any further calls from that number. Worst case scenario, the scammer calls back, and the old man would be able to say something like "well, I talked to my bank" which may scare them away.
When calling a victim, I suggest keeping it as simple as: 1. Introduce yourself succinctly and tell them that you prevent scams. 2. What’s happening to them - “Scammers/criminals are trying to steal your money.” 3. Resolution - “Turn off computer immediately.” ...along those lines. I think explaining technical details won’t be useful. It’s more important to convey the gravity of the situation and that everything will be just fine if they follow the resolution. The goal should be to get the victim to turn off their computer as soon as possible - detailed explanations can come later. Of course these suggestions are easy to make on my part in hindsight. In the midst of dire situations, communication can be a challenge. Thank you for all that you do.
I think you are right. Those who got scammed this way are often not the brightest people. But are people responsible for the level of intelligence which they are born with? My answer is obviously no, they are not. They would not understand the details behind scamming as a computer is a godlike machine for them. So they need help. In this situation, maybe the only way to help them is gently enforce that help on them. If needed, and if possible, shut down the computer for them. because sooner or later they will believe the scammers. Another thing i hear is how stupid scammers are. Are they?, or do they act like that? They are obvious not computer experts, but on the other side they are smart enough to understand that their harsh, insulting and intimidating way of handling their victims bring panic and with that a successful scam. They are less stupid as some scambaiters give them credits for. Most scammers are way richer as most scambaiters.....
Please try to be logical brother, they are elder citizens who is definitely not so tech savvy. If Jim try to explain himself it might bring problem for him too. Meanwhile at the heat of moment he forgot to advice to remove TeamViewer app, though at the end he hadn't succed. But that also give reason to bring town those scammers.
I’ve watched so many Kitboga videos that I have been finding it kinda funny and these scammers quite ridiculous (did make me stay on calls with scammers for as long as possible to waste and steal their time ever since though). But watching this video and especially hearing the 2nd victim’s call was absolutely horrifyng and left me SO upset! He was clearly shocked and distressed, and though it’s easy to point out that you should have “just” stayed on the phone with him for as long as it would take him to calm completely down and shut off his computer, I can’t say that I could have done any better in this case. You gave it your best, and I nearly cried, listening to your compassion for this man, this stranger. I wish there were more people like you, and it has got me thinking of how I myself can help people like this. Thank you for you! ❤️
I used to work in tech support. For elderly people, you absolutely have to keep it as simple as possible or they will lose track. You need to get them to repeat what you've said, so that they say it themselves and it makes sense to them. I would have guided him over to the computer, told him to find the PowerPoint and flipped the switch. Then, told him to call the bank or even the police. It's disgusting they didn't want to help him. You tried your best Jim
I think part of it, and it seemed that way to me, was that he wasn't even home; and because the scammers had remote access to his bank site, it wasn't timing out.
@@ocoolwow every one of Jim's directions, on their own, are simple, but when you give several long winded directions to someone who is already distressed, confused and scared, it wouldn't have been very simple. He could have walked the guy through each step, one by one, and not get too far ahead of himself. Jim asked for feedback, that's my experienced feedback.
The reason they are shouting isn't out of frustration - when they are frustrated, they usually swear in Hindi. They shout to pressure the victim and to keep them from thinking rationally. At that point, the victims are supposed to believe that their life savings have been taken out of their account and they will never see them again unless they comply with the angry shouting guy who claims they wronged THEM by not paying them the "accidental" surplus back right now. If the victim was given a calm moment to think rationally, they would hang up, call their bank, a trusted person or the police. That would be the worst case for the scammer. The only thing the victim is meant to think about is to pay the 50K and to lie to the bank about why they are transferring so much money. Calm thinking would raise doubts: "If this person could take all the money out of my account and put it back in, why do they need ME to go to the bank to refund him? He can just put my money MINUS the $50.000 back! "Why would any serious business that is trying to refund me tell me not to tell anyone, to lie to the bank and NOT to check whether the supposed refund actually ocurred?" "Do I even have business with this company?"
Scammer: I'M NOT THREATENING YOU! Me: Bruh you just said you were going to empty her bank account if she didn't listen to you, that's threatening Ugh, these people make India have a bad name! >:(
Man you gotta stop telling that old man that “this must sound suspicious “ etc it’s only causing doubt bc the scammer is trying to convince him also! you have to come from a place of authority and confidence
To help seniors always keep things extremely simple: you’re being scammed and I’m fighting to stop them. Your money is safe but you need to stop what you’re doing and turn off your computer immediately. No need to explain technical terms, computers are magic to them.
That is an extremely condescending point of view. People will not accept help if they feel they are being spoken down to. Wouldn't you resist directions from someone who spoke to you as though you were simple minded? Your belief that seniors are so out of it that for them computers might well be magic is also factually inaccurate. Many seniors are familiar with computers and use them everyday. It also depends how you define senior. Bill Gates, for example, is 65. If you were to look at him you would think he's a typical older person but I'm fairly certain he knows more about computers than you do. Rather than assume a lack of knowledge based on someone's age, ask them what they know and take it from there. The reason Jim is as successful as he is precisely because he doesn't talk down to them.
@@Kyarrix I mean, not necessarily. By the time you are at the point of getting gift cards, you're probably confused and stressed. This person isn't just an old person, they're a panicked person. Panicked people need stability. A simple explanation makes a better anchor than a complex one.
@@aldproductions2301 You did see what the person I was responding to said? They specifically said "to help seniors always keep things extremely simple" because technical terms are "like magic" to them. They said ""No need to explain technical terms, computers are magic to them." This is extremely condescending. What is an "old" person? Someone who is 50? 55? 85? At what point is it okay to speak to someone as though their age equated to them being simple minded such that technology is "like magic" to them? No, sorry. Let's not talk to older people as though they've lost their wits as soon as they hit 60. Or 70. It's possible to offer a simple and straightforward explanation to a panicked person without going that extra mile and assuming that because they are older we should "keep things extremely (extremely!) simple" and that there is "no need" to actually explain anything to them, after all "computers are magic to them." How do you not see the ugly condescension in this? Reading that comment again I feel the same way I did when I first read it - dislike and distaste for anyone who would make that kind of blanket assumption about people based on age or any other characteristic.
@@Kyarrix Any adequately tech savvy person would realize the scam being had here, regardless of age. The reason why these scams succeed is because they target seniors that aren't tech savvy. Hence OP's comment.
@@fallingspark2258 Thank you for the explanation. I understand how it works..The point I am making relates not to whether seniors are tech savvy but to the condescension in the comment. The comment isn't addressing anyone, it is specifically directed at older people. Read it again. When you say "No need to explain anything, computers are magic to old people" you are making an unwarranted generalization. It's similar to any other generalization based on a trait. If you were to say, no need to explain the ins and outs of politics, women don't get that sort of thing it's like magic to them, you'd be making a similar type of statement. Do you see the parallel? Making an assumption as to what someone knows or does not know based solely on their status as a member of a group is wrong. Women, older people, Christians, Black people, any group. I understand that anyone technically savvy will probably not be taken in, when you say hence the comment, you are missing the point. The comment doesn't say to treat everyone who is not technically savvy this way. It specifically says to be "extremely simple" and to avoid technical terms or details because "computers are magic" for older people. Older people specifically. Not anyone in this situation, not any person being scammed, but only older people. People get taken in by scammers regardless of their age,.vulnerable people are vulnerable regardless of age or technical background. Treat people with respect. Don't assume that someone being scammed requires an extremely simple approach. Don't assume that they view computers as magic. If you're trying to help someone in that situation take it on a case-by-case basis. If the person is panicking, then of course don't overburden them with details, you can give those later, but also don't speak to them as though they're simple-minded because that does harm too.
That old guy sadly just don't get comprehend you could have sat there for 5 hours and he still wouldn't get it. Bravo for trying though your a good man Jim.
Honestly it's sobering to see a video where you don't fully succeed, but I imagine it makes you want to push yourself that much more to help others. And that's what makes this video so important, and makes me so happy to see you doing your best to help those in need.
Good point. Bank webpages are so busy and full of useless marketing though that we tune it all out. I wouldn't have even noticed that had I not read your comment.

One idea could be to find their address and call a random neighbor. But to he honest, I would give up frustrated and justify that for me with "some people don't deserve my help"
I think being more direct and straight to the point would help. “Sir, they are scammers from India who are trying to steal money from you. They tried to scam me and now my job is to try to stop them, please report this to the police and contact your bank.” Something like that.
@jimminy cricket I'm pretty sure most people I know don't know that as they are not that tech savvy, never talk about computers and use social media pretty rarely. They get very confused when something happens with their "electronic devices". It's all about your personality. If you are naive, kind, fearful and sensitive person, you are more vulnerable for scam attempts and old people often are pretty fearful. I think it's natural. Also, most people know what is Google, but tech support scams are way less popular.

Jim, with old people keep it simple. Perform these steps:
1) "I'm a fraud investigator."
2) "Turn off your computer."
3) "Here's how to block the scammer's number."
4) "Do not answer unfamiliar numbers for a week."
old people cant block numbers even if you show it to them by hand..step 2 and 4 is the only 1s that really help.
With ANYONE, keep it simple. Everyone under stress starts tunnelling and you need to break through it with concise and direct information/directions/orders (as the case may be).

@@editorjohn8803 Exactly. Jim needs to keep the person on the phone and get them to the bank
Yes! I have older Hispanic grandparents and if you tell them they are criminals or use any sort of hard hitting words, they'll understand immediately!
I also think he should keep the explanation rather simple and straightforward. A less tech savvy person probably has no idea what he's talking about.
Completely agree.
I know it's racist, but i wonder if you could realistically say "Hang up on anyone with an Indian accent."
Everything else gets so technical. Some of these victims have trouble _using_ a computer let alone navigating a scammer's interference.

Maybe even recruit more people to do this, so that army of Jim Brownings is keeping are safe :)

hi Jim, I know this video is a bit old now but I'm just getting around to your channel.
Thank you for offering it
Empathetic and well stated-brilliant!
An EMT, ER nurse, and an ICU nurse... okay.
Its hilarious that anyone on here is giving Jim advice.
The first scammer had such a God complex like “I AM THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD THAT CAN BRING YOU YOUR MONEY BACK”
Not a god complex. He's trying to establish powerlessness in his victim in order to get them to submit to his demands because 'there is no other way'.
@Phleet Gaming IDK....seems like the guy in the background that was running the same scam was saying the exact same things, so I'm guessing that they are either given the same scripts.....or they just hire narcissists in this call center :-)

Music Calgary this needs to be top comment
Im very certain there is a fraud detective that can help this older gentlemen set his computer right
Hi Jim,
I work as a HelpDesk technician and I often times deal with older, tech illiterate people.
I would like the comment but I can't be the one that ruined that 69 likes.

“Don’t trust those people calling you, they’re criminals” should’ve kept it simple, old people just be like that
It's a human flaw, societal, but also genetic.

I wonder why he does that and doesn't say what he is actually doing. 🤔
If a guy with an Indian accent calls about this again, hang up, don't entertain it with any politeness'
'MY job is to investigate fraudsters like this and try and stop them mid-scam. Please listen, you have lost nothing unless you continue to listen to them.'
I was looking for those comments calling you a racist but thank god they stayed in their closets
I think it could be good if Jim straight up introduced himself as a vigilante fithing these scammers.
When calling a victim, I suggest keeping it as simple as:
1. Introduce yourself succinctly and tell them that you prevent scams.
2. What’s happening to them - “Scammers/criminals are trying to steal your money.”
3. Resolution - “Turn off computer immediately.”
...along those lines.
It was simple enough. The old man was too stupid to comprehend.

Also him: DONT TOUCH THE COMPUTER
He’s lucky he wasn’t on the phone with Kitboga or he would’ve done messed him up with some mental mind games after that one.
@@8888760 Kitboga wastes their time more😂😂
Me: your parents didn’t get far teaching you manners. Bye.
We call them Jedi mind tricks where I'm from
I’ve watched so many Kitboga videos that I have been finding it kinda funny and these scammers quite ridiculous (did make me stay on calls with scammers for as long as possible to waste and steal their time ever since though).
Are you the Thomas that got scammed?
He did warn you not to buy them gift cards.
I mean Jim told him multiple times to call his bank and he didn't. Can't get more simple than that...
When scammers realize that they can’t scam the victim (or if the victim becomes suspicious) they always lose it!
Precisely! Its because scammers are desperate
It hurts their little ego.
"Why would any serious business that is trying to refund me tell me not to tell anyone, to lie to the bank and NOT to check whether the supposed refund actually ocurred?"
"Do I even have business with this company?"
They start yelling like they are the king poo! When really they should be on the streets of calcutta without a loo to poo in.
Scammer: Nooooo, you can't just refresh and lose all the edits that I made for a lot of time!!!
Jim: Haha, refresh go wooosh
😂😂😂😂😂
Toilet go whoosh, poo go bye
Sometimes, they save the edited version of the webpage. That way, they can bring it back up in case the victim "makes a mistake."
Scammer: I'M NOT THREATENING YOU!
Me: Bruh you just said you were going to empty her bank account if she didn't listen to you, that's threatening
Ugh, these people make India have a bad name! >:(
LMAO
Man you gotta stop telling that old man that “this must sound suspicious “ etc it’s only causing doubt bc the scammer is trying to convince him also! you have to come from a place of authority and confidence
These are previous encounters. He has learned how to talk to victims in an authoritative tone.
They said ""No need to explain technical terms, computers are magic to them."
This is extremely condescending. What is an "old" person? Someone who is 50? 55? 85? At what point is it okay to speak to someone as though their age equated to them being simple minded such that technology is "like magic" to them?
No, sorry. Let's not talk to older people as though they've lost their wits as soon as they hit 60. Or 70. It's possible to offer a simple and straightforward explanation to a panicked person without going that extra mile and assuming that because they are older we should "keep things extremely (extremely!) simple" and that there is "no need" to actually explain anything to them, after all "computers are magic to them."
How do you not see the ugly condescension in this?
The second victim should not have been living alone.
It sounded like he doesn't have friends or family.
That old guy sadly just don't get comprehend you could have sat there for 5 hours and he still wouldn't get it. Bravo for trying though your a good man Jim.

It’s difficult to watch such shit “people” win. I’ve never wanted to punch a voice before today.
I think being more direct and straight to the point would help. “Sir, they are scammers from India who are trying to steal money from you. They tried to scam me and now my job is to try to stop them, please report this to the police and contact your bank.” Something like that.
@jimminy cricket I don't think it has nothing to do with being a sheep, but being a scared human.
