I’m excited and nervous, but mostly, I’m inspired, and honestly, so much of my renewed discovery of my love of ballet has to do with both of you, so THANK YOU ☺️☺️💞
I studied the Vaganova methodology in my early 20’s and became certified to teach the 1st year of the short program / 1 1/2 yrs of the long program. I was one of a handful of instructors, at the time, in the Western Hemisphere, which was a huge honor! Vaganova or Classical Ballet is far more technically demanding. I also studied more of an English method from the age of 10-17 and it was not the same. Classical Ballet made much more sense to me i.e. placement of arms and positions of the feet. I’m surprised skirts were allowed? Not when I was studying. I did have to wear my hair in a bun and could wear leg warmers through the first warm up exercise. At that point we had to remove leg warmers and dance wrap sweaters. We each brought a hand towel to drape over the barre, because we would be profusely sweating! If you have the opportunity to study or your child wants to study, I highly recommend the Vaganova method over any other. Formal education doesn’t begin until the age of 9-10. Any classes prior to that age were basically just creative movement, which is still great fun and exercise for your child. The Vaganova audition is to take many things into consideration and as what you heard much different from the Royal Ballet. I believe this is why Russian dancers are more advanced based on my experience with both methods. If I understood her correctly, the lovely blonde student did not receive a full education and her exams were for dance only? Many thanks to both young ladies, it was interesting to learn the differences in their ballet and formal education. I adore ballet still, it was my first Love. Oh, I absolutely believe in the spiritual world. I’m quite sure Madame Vaganova would visit the studio she loved. 🙏🏻💗🩰
The dancer on the left is Claudia Dean, a former member of the Royal Ballet, who danced principal role when she was still a corps member. I wouldn't characterize her training less than "full."
The information from Claudia Dean is all on the basis of joining the RBS at 16 plus. But younger dancers are trained at White Lodge, which is very different from what Claudia describes whereas my understanding is that the Vaganova Academy takes from 11 in one venue.
Exactly what I was thinking. The White Lodge building is a beautiful old building to train in and probably more comparable but I guess it's there own experiences they're discussing.

Really enjoyed this. The conversation was so interesting. It was lovely to hear the differences, and similarties between the student experiences at each of the schools.
But Maria went right through Vaganova, from being a child to graduation - whereas Claudia Dean spent a couple of years in the Upper School. It's not the same is it?
Oh hi Claudia. I saw your program on the difference between Russia and ‘our’ ballet. Lovely to see you together - well, sort of. Thank you Maria 🙏🙏🙏🙏🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
I'd love you both to compare the physicality and the training. Such as how the ideal pointe is achieved and what flexibility and weight is considered appropriate for a dancer in training.
Love this. I watch Claudia’s vids all the time. And I have seen lots of Maria’s dance videos which I also enjoy very much . Great job you two! Do more!
It is very good that education is so focused on because heaven forbid a dancer gets a major injury, or their body as it developes is unsuitable for ballet, you are prepared to find employment in another area that may interest you or even to work in the theater in another aspect other than dance.
I did 10 years of ballet at a Royal accredited school back in my country and I confirm what she said about the uniforms: no skirts, no leg warmers, had to use your classes' maillot, and obviously hair always in a bun. After moving to another country, I also did 2 more years of Vaganova ballet and it was much more relaxed.
White Lodge is a secondary school, so from 11-16 (yrs 7-11 uk school years) the RBS Upper School is a sixth form/FE college in the context of British education system plus one extra year.
In the 1970s there was an attempt to create a balletschool in Chile (!), in the Vaganovas tradition, i think. I was there for 3 years. I am impressed that I had the same classes as Maria (obviously I am not talking about levels, it was another time and another world). It marked me a lot. I am 60 but I have never stopped living with my "inner dancer". I will never stop training, not really. Ithink, i won a bodily feeling. (And I also learned to live with the trauma of leaving that path, of course.)
Thank you - both of you. I don't know much about ballet, but I have listened to you the whole time and now I want to learn more - many even watch a ballet irl. Thank you. Anne-Mette / Denmark.
I think this would of been more interesting/successful if instead of Claudia Dean who attended RBS for such a short amount of time, that Maria had spoken to someone who had gone right through the RBS - from White Lodge to the Upper- someone who then went on to be either a 1st soloist or principal of the RB. Basically someone who has had a similar experience as Maria - but in England. The conversation then could have been more about their younger school days and developing into their shared experiences dancing principal roles. Imagine if Yasmine Naghdi had been speaking with Maria or Claire Calvert...
After watching such long comparison to both, Vaganova's training is much better than Royal, no doubt about it . Also the facts from the past, Vaganova always provide top ballerina non stop from time to time.
Ms. Khoreva's English is impeccable. Did you learn that in Vaganova ? If so just that alone tells you what a great school it is not to mention how very difficult it is to excel in that school . I watched a documentary made by NHK (Japan) of life of students in Vaganova and it broke my heart to see some girls /boys get knocked out of school after being told flatly and coldly that you didn't make the cut after exam etc. They check your weight all the time as well, right ? That's why all Russian dancers are gorgeous be it principals or corp not to mention technics.

I was congratulated once for my efforts and they still didn't approve me. They never chose me to performe or compete. I was in a Vaganova school and if you are the worst of the class (not the laziest) you´ll allways been on the bar next to the mirror -, there you can see your body for any corrections-. that you didn't make the cut after exam etc. They check your weight all the time as well, right ?
That's why all Russian dancers are gorgeous be it principals or corp not to mention technics.
Her mother is an English teacher! =D
So interesting! Love how respectful you both are to one another.
Please please please do a part 2 and compare the companies!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
Please come to Brazil Maria! Have you met our Bolshoi academy? We are the only country that has one outside Russia, it's a beautiful project
I Checked on wikipedia and brazilian Bolshoi is still the only one listed as a branch en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolshoi_Ballet
@@mireyanienstadt375 anyway, for ballet lovers, there is a great documentary on RT UA-cam Channel called Bolshoi : Pas-de-Brazil, it is so beautiful, i always tell people to match it lol
You're welcome honey, and I Love Mexico! It's such a rich culture, we brazilians love your novelas , Rebelde was huge in Brazil! And El chavo del ocho, we were really sad when he passed away! I think in New york they have a school but it is not a branch, lol, i don't really know how these names works
I was trained in Vaganova Method and I wouldn't have it any other way. ❤️
What a fun, interesting collaboration from two lovely people. Thank you, both! 💛💛
The dreaming collab!😍
I can't get enough of this ballet stars and amazing people
Loved this collab so much, two amazingly talented ladies, thank you 💃💐
Nice chat about ballet! Thank you, you two, super ballerinas!
Please consider doing a video/s with Claudia Dean...
• Comparing the two methods (English vs Russian)
• History of Royal Ballet vs Vaganova
Yes but could they use someone who is an expert on English style English schooling not someone who went to the for less than 2 years!!!
Let's consider that a possible added bonus 🤔😆💞
I was scouted to join the Royal Ballet's junior school in Richmond Park when I was really young. My mother didn't tell me till years later as she didn't want me to go. So interesting hearing about your experiences. I often wonder what my life would have been like if she'd let me go, I don't think I had the right feet though (big toe too long!)
Its incredible! I dont remember my ballet school like you. May it be because I was the worst in the class. I suffered so much. I allways barely passed the exams. I was congratulated once for my efforts and they still didn't approve me. They never chose me to performe or compete. I was in a Vaganova school and if you are the worst of the class (not the laziest) you´ll allways been on the bar next to the mirror -, there you can see your body for any corrections-. And in the Center you´ll be in the line back (to the right or left)... Well, I didn't want to make a catharsis 😅. I feel happy for you both. At least you didn´t suffered like others and youwere able to make a dancer career. Congrats!! 👏👏
so great to hear about life at the Vaganova Academy. So many details you wondered about all life. Thank you!! My full admiration to Maria Khoreva. Sorry if I am interested mainly in the Vaganova School....
REEEE, I LOVE ITT❤️❤️. I will always by your side💕
The team is everything 👍
yeah👍😊🤣
Thank you. Brilliant that you are friends!
ahhh I'm so excited about this video! two of my top favorite ballerina sharing stories, this is the best ever! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, so happy for you guys!
Beautiful work by the two of them. First I met Claudia on Instagram and then Maria through a student of mine.💕💕💕
Their both so amazing! I was so excited when I found this video haha!
I LIVE FOR THIS COLLABORATION 😍
I open it for just a glance and then it turns out I've been watching it for more than an hour)
This was so interesting! I would love to hear from someone about Ecole de danse de l'Opera national de Paris... Or the company under Opera in Paris
Yes, bring in Ines Macintosh... 😊
Thank you so much Maria. It was very interesting to watch. I love how you are honest. Great personality you have!
Absolutely loved the video - great to listen to all the details; so interesting & genuine; BRAVO 👏🏼
This was wonderful -- loved it!! I watch all of your videos and work out with many of them -- they've been incredibly helpful and have added to my quality of life. I also watch Claudia's videos for advice and for fun. Thank you so much -- you're such an amazing ballerina and a beautiful person!
I was so excited about this!! ❤️
Hi Miss Maria!! Hi Miss Claudia!! I'm so excited to see two of my favorite ballerinas in such an amazing video! I'm from Dominican Republic and I send you best wishes. Thanks so much for sharing!!
Hi dear Maria.
Please consider doing a collaboration with graduates from other internationally recognised ballet schools.
E.g. Paris Opera, Canada, Princess Grace, Australia, School of American Ballet, San Francisco, Cuba, Sunhwa Arts School (South Korea), John Cranko, La Scala Milan Academy, Juilliard
I’m 25 which means I have nothing with these two amazing schools. Too old for them, I believe👻 I watched it just because I like Maria speaking English. And, also I found the contents very interesting and helpful.
Maria, you speak English so beautifully. How did you learn?
Thanks to the two of you, it was such an interesting and inspiring video! Very happy about this collab. Have a nice day ❤️ About the ghost question: I couldn't say yes or no but I definitely believe that it could be possible. I mean we shouldn't underestimate the things we don't know nothing about it :)
This collab is awesome! I loved it.
I enjoyed this so much! Please do a company comparison video 💞
Love this collab! Never thought I would see the both of you in the same video, love hearing about both schools
Am I a ballet dancer? Not at all, but this was incredibly interesting and found the entire interaction fascinating.
