the thing about ref sheets that bugs me is that I know I probably should draw the character in some pose that makes it less difficult to tell what they look like, if that makes any sense, but I often just d o n ' t feel like drawing them simply standing. like... it feels so boring hgghcvhgvhj
its a ref sheet, its not supposed to be interesting, but having one or two EXTRA drawing of your character posing can show how their design works dynamically and showcase their personality
@@scribblecloud I know it's not supposed to be interesting, thats the point of why I don't like drawing ref sheets LOL though its been several months since i posted this and i dont rlly have this issue anymore? cant rlly explain how i fixed it tho
I really love your tutorials, they are super helpful! Could you maybe make a tutorial on how to find an own art style or could you talk about how you found your own art style? I am really struggling with finding an art style that is unique, but also fits to myself. I really love your art style and I am just super curious on how you got it.
Thank you, I'm so glad they can be helpful! My suggestion for finding your art style is to look at the things you like in other people's art that you want to incorporate into yours! The way I do noses and eyes was inspired by an artist named Jeniak, and the way I do ears inspired by an artist named Amelia Bothe. Those are just two examples however, and my art style has developed from looking at the art style of all the artists that inspire me and studying the way they draw things so that I can incorporate them into my own art. I don't try to replicate just one style, but rather find the things I like from multiple styles! My art style is also still changing and developing as I discover new styles that I like better than my old ones. In short, my big tip is to find the things you like in art styles and apply them to your own art style: by finding ideas from different sources it will help create an art style that is uniquely yours! And of course, your art will always continue to change and improve for the better ^^
I came up with an idea to help me make my ref sheet easier, make the front facing without the face and use it as the back as well, and copy it to the other side if I’m doing the drawing without clothes. thank you for the tips btw!!
I really enjoy this video! I think sometimes people think they need to cram everything in a ref (which I do sometimes myself lol) but just a simple reference like yours gives enough information for your character! And you want the oc to be the main focus, and all the full clutter can confuse and turn the artist away from the main oc, so this simple Ref is great for drawing off of! Something I add to my reference is just a small text of “Rage is/Loves: bold, confident, emo and punk rock….” It’s small detail so your artist can have a idea of your character aesthetic and personality! And possible things they love Idk if that’s helpful but again I ADORE YOUR REFS AMD ART
So happy you enjoyed it! Yes exactly about the simple refs being able to give enough info, and honestly I do like how more cluttered refs can also add a lot of personality/charm to a ref sheet. I actually have 2 refs for my sona, a "cluttered" ref sheet with lots of stuff about personality, details, etc; that I use more to show off her character, and then the "simple" ref sheet in the video which I like to give to people when having her be drawn/needed more for reference. I like your idea of adding a little bit about the personality, because I know as an artist how much it helps to know the way the character thinks when drawing them! Thank you so much for the kind comment aww!! T^T
@@ChloeHatler oh yeah I agree!! Clutter can be hella fun to work with most my refs are cus I love just piling silly facts about my Characters lmaoo, I could gush about your refs for ages but loving the videos so far!
remember that a lot of art programs should have a built in mirror tool, which will make symmetrical drawing a LOT easier because you can tell right away if a shape will look good or weird when mirrored
This was really helpful, I only did front back and then a head side profile for some reason, now I’m gonna start adding full Body side profiles ( I also did a whole ref sheet of the head bc I was bored lol)
CHLOEEE MY LOV YOU'RE SO INCREDIBLE AT ART! I always learn so much from you no matter what >:3 You did such a good job on Mizzle's reference sheet Chloe I love you so much T^T
Here’s how I do it. (For my dragons, ofc) 1. Draw the mane body (side facing view). If the other side looks different then one side, copy and paste the side you drew, then flip it horizontally. 2. Draw their mouth, eye(s), blood, and paws! 3. Draw 2-3 expressions they mostly show. 4. Add any accessories they have! 5. Show your red to the world! Wait, add name and pronouns at the top of the ref. Okay, done :3
good tutorial! i usually just do a front facing fullbody and then add some extra features off to the side, like tongue color, paw pads, and accessories. that's cus i'm lazy, but also cus there usually isn't anything interesting on my characters backs XD
What’s the point of displaying the colors used at the top, instead of just having people pick the colors from the drawing? Is it just supposed make it easier to select?
Yes exactly! It's to make them easier to select: for example it would be harder to select the eye colors if they weren't displayed at the top as well ^^
I finde it curious ive noticed how youre fursona blushed when she said the name of benji and you have mentioned dragons maybe after chatgpt a wings of fire video migth be coming??
shading a ref sheet is totally fine???? idk just my opinion but i don't really like it when people colorpick art anyways :( eyeballing is awesome i wish people did it more
I think a large amount of people colorpick because they want to make sure they get the character's colors 100% accurate! That and I like to keep my character's colors consistent by colorpicking rather than having their colors change every time I draw them. At least that's why I colorpick! :D
I always struggle with making my reference sheets I feel compelled to fill in all the empty space
