I l’m always wandering why people suggest as beginners camera and beginners film always cheaper camera and cheaper films?? Does it mean that film photography is exclusively for people w/out money? What if somebody wants to invest in quality camera and start learning film photography with Portra 400 or Slide even if he/she doesn’t have too much, but prefer quality things.
Contax G2 user here, love the feel of this camera, properly built tool. I also shoot on a £15 Canon EOS 600 with a 40mm 2.8 pancake lens, love that camera too. Also shoot digital on a Canon R5 and eyeing up a Leica M2. It’s about having a camera for every situation, no one camera can do everything perfectly.
So what you are saying is that the old adage that you are better off spending money on film, and getting in more practice than on a new camera still holds true, you just need to insert film in front of the word camera. I would have gone for a Canon with more focus selection points myself, I think that only has 3. The sharpness of a lens matters very little unless you are shooting on a tripod with slow film, although you might notice a bit less contrast or slightly different colour rendering with the Canon.
Time to sell it for a down payment on a TX-1 😈. Jokes aside, I was in similar situation wanting to get the Nikon L35AF but decided that spending that much on a film point and shoot was worthless when a $20 point and shoot did the same exact thing.
I inherited a mint G2 with the flash, the 35, 45 and 90 and love using it. I picked up a G1 green label for only $320 shipped and this will become my daily driver saving wear and tear on my coveted G2. I also have a couple of cheap Canon film SLRs with a 50 1.8 and the 40 2.8 which take great pictures as well and can take a beating!

I think one counter point is it might be worth it if the camera the money is tied up in is extremely enjoyable to use. I'm not a big SLR fan and went through a few Canon's and Nikon's before finding a great deal on a mint M6. I enjoy using it more than any other camera I've ever owned so I get my money's worth from it. TLDR: I'd rather have a £1000 camera that I love and use everyday than a £100 camera that I don't.
I’d definitely apply that logic to a digital camera that I’d use way more often , but with film prices rocketing and having to be more careful with how often I shoot it, I’m just not hugely into the desirable gear side of film anymore I guess 😅🤷🏻♂️

I am partial to shooting on rangefinders though as opposed to SLR’s so I might need to look out for an M6 alternative down the road, ideally a mechanical camera. That's a really good point about cost of cameras that others have also made. That camera is about £1400. With that money you can buy a nice point and shoot, rangefinder or SLR for way less money and with what's left over actually go abroad with spending money and get some really nice shots in a new environment with a range of films. I have my Fujica ST801 (£45) which looks like any on trend SLR like OM1, AE1. My rangefinder Canonet QL19 (£19) and several point and shoots costing no more than £24. People can have great and expensive cameras but is their work any good?
I’m slumming it even further with a Minolta Dynax 500 something SLR with kit zoom lens for less than 9 quid delivered…another fiver for a battery and it’s as good as new!….love it!..
I agree with you Josh. While, I was choosing my first film camera, I was really concerned about their feel and their build quality. Coincidentally, at that same time I was given my family P&S with which I shot a roll of Gold 200. Strangely, it didn't bother me that it felt plasticky. Later, when I purchased my first real film camera the the Ikon Zm, I could feel the quality upgrade, but it didn't give me any more pleasure shooting than with my Oly. I guess the fact that they allow me to experience the story behind that one frame matters to me more. With digital though, it gets overly complicated at times and I tend to be more picky of the cameras I use 😅
I got a canon EF-M, a canon EOS ELAN and I use all of my EF mounts lenses on them as well. These cameras are cheap, they shoot at 1/4000, they do burst mode, the focus is always on point and they average a price of 25 to 50€ each. No brainer.
Hi Josh, Like you, I’ve had many cameras bought and sold as there are so many cameras out there that when you find it… You will never sell it! I have not come across that camera as of yet. Whether or not in 35mm or medium format cameras that cost so much and may breakdown at some part will be disappointing and you may end up with a camera that you mentioned in your video the best camera in hand. Hey mate, this might sound really dumb to ask but this is a film camera so I'm trying to figure out how did you get all your shots on the computer? Did you have to physically scan your film or does this camera have some kind of image transfer via some cable?
It doesn’t sound that dumb! For film cameras, there’s no image transfer via some cable. Once you get your film developed, you can scam them onto a computer :). Labs that you send your film in usually can always scan and then send you them through email.
I picked up a Nikon f90x with a 35 to 80 lens for £60. That’s nuts ! It runs if AA batteries also, so if you run out pop into Poundland. I also got a 50mm 1.8 off eBay for £45. So for less than £100 I got an awesome camera set up.

Yes! People are and will catch on about the last built cheap film slrs and their value. I have a Minolta HTsi Plus and I love it. I didn’t at first and ignored for a number of years, and I never thought of selling it because I knew it wasn’t in the hype/ desirable class. But now I’ve come to realize that, with it’s 14 segment honeycomb meter, spot meter button, af button, EV comp, DX override, light body with interchangeable lenses, I have an advanced p&s if I want. It’s very light and small with a decent grip. I also love the faux premium plastic build, which isn’t too bad as long as I don’t give it any hard bumps. It’s gonna come down to whether people want the classic analog shooting experience or just want to shoot film no matter how. I personally like the look from the modern cameras where they give almost digital like clean images, with really good exposure. I have manual cameras if I want to go for that. Great video.
Of all the people I see reviewing gear on UA-cam you are by far the best photographer. Accordingly your thoughts on gear seem to be more results oriented rather than meeting some technical standard just for the sake of it. I will always listen to what you have to say.
Bought two Canon EOS 500n in a job lot for £15 a couple of years ago and it is now my go to camera. Stick the 50mm 1.8 on it and its practically a disposable set-up. It's hilarious trying to explain to my partner that the 5 pack of portra 400 was far more expensive

I use Canon 300 - 7e and 1v bodies with sigma and canon lenses and they have extreme sharpness & contrast. I think Contax is a great exhibit Item of super industrial design.
I bought the Canon EOS 300, with lens for around £10-£15 a year or so ago, not really started with my film photography yet, I ran a roll through my Pentax KM, or didn’t may be more correct as it came out blank. I’ve got a roll nearly finished in my Minolta 500si and going to put a roll of Kodak Colour in my Pentax K1000 today but it’s quite dark here but really want to start using my film cameras more, need to learn some time. As for the 300, I’ve not even bought batteries for it as yet so no idea if it works, I’ve a few point and shoots, really would like something small I can carry around easily when I’m out with my Fuji Xt3 and small bag, any ideas for a newbie please? I personally shoot film for fun. So the user experience is really important to me. The pure joy of using my Nikon F3, is what motivates me to go out and shoot. I would probably lose that shooting a Canon Eos 300. However, i would totally agree on not spending to much on a camera like the Contax G2, simply because you are basically spending that much money just for the hype. Getting a Nikon F3 with a 50 1,4 for under 300€ is definitely possible if you are lucky. Which seems to be a perfectly reasonable amount for a camera you could use for the next decade or even more.
Leica M6, Contax G2, Yashica T4 and others - film cameras that have been popularised through social media and are 'cameras to be seen with' for so many. I have two Canon 300v bodies both £15 each. Absolutely love their diminutive form factor and they perform flawlessly. The 300v rectified Canon's loopy decision to make the bayonet mount plastic on earlier cameras and reverted it to metal. Like any electronics dependent camera though, eventually they'll fail but that's why my regular carries are a 1957 Leica M3 DS and Fuji GL690...
I have a pentax k1000 and I refuse to buy a nicer film camera. On the other hand I want to spend a lot of money on older digital cameras like the m9 and R-D1 among others.
I have two similar cameras. The G1 and the Canon EOS 500n. The G1 is super fine if you want to take a stroll and take your time with each shot, because the viewfinder works only when your eye is perfectly aligned with it. Sometimes I go to take a shot quickly, can only see the focus point and have to guess at the framing. The Canon 500n has an amazing viewfinder in comparison and it's just easier overall. You can even put it in full automatic and it's basically a point and shoot. Plus, the plastic design is an advantage if you want to carry it around all day. The only advantage of the G1 are the Carl Zeiss lenses available. I believe there is a difference in quality compared to the Canon lenses.
The G2 is a gorgeous camera and the EOS a bit of a plastic pig, but 70 vs 1200 says a lot. Most people will appreciate it, especially if they 'need' a Leica M6 or something. If you are aiming to go by the seaside you should pop down my way to Bournemouth. Personally, I'd really like to see your take on the area with that lovely imagery colour palette of yours!

Yo Josh. G2 owner here too. I have not used the camera in anger since owning it a few months. There is a tendency for the camera to focus on the foreground or more contrasty subjects when composing. Keeping an eye on the distance scale can be a fair guide to where exactly the camera has focused. I have the Zeiss 45mm lens and the sharpness and contrast it confers onto images is possibly comparable to Leica Summicron. When comparing images between both lenses especially black and white there are many similarities. I’m sure you’ve been happy using the G2. May it pass on to a good owner. We live very finite lives Josh. It may be about pictures but it is possibly as much about the joy making them. Take care Josh and hope we can see you making a video in few parts going on a train to somewhere.
The most important thing for me is being confident, that I have nailed the exposure and used the opportunity. Therefore one should use the camera which one is most confident/trained in operating, no matter if it is an affordable or an expensive set of gear :)
Some really good points here! As much as i love the slow process of old film cameras with manual focusing and manual exposure, it’s always those couple of shots on each roll that’s slightly out of focus or the exposure is way off… So using a «newer» film camera with good auto focus and auto exposure really helps getting the most out of each roll. And as you said, the late 90s/early 2000s SLRs don’t seem to be to pricy because they are not that cool looking I guess. Cheers from Norway!
Rarely do I see good photos taken on the Contax G1/G2 because of its terrible autofocus system. However, adapting those lenses on a Fujifilm is supreme.

Another solid, not-cool film SLR is the Nikon F80/N80. It's the poor man's F100, which is the poor man's F6.

The G2 is a beast.
The most important thing for me is being confident, that I have nailed the exposure and used the opportunity. Therefore one should use the camera which one is most confident/trained in operating, no matter if it is an affordable or an expensive set of gear :)

Some really good points here!
As much as i love the slow process of old film cameras with manual focusing and manual exposure, it’s always those couple of shots on each roll that’s slightly out of focus or the exposure is way off… So using a «newer» film camera with good auto focus and auto exposure really helps getting the most out of each roll.
And as you said, the late 90s/early 2000s SLRs don’t seem to be to pricy because they are not that cool looking I guess.

Rarely do I see good photos taken on the Contax G1/G2 because of its terrible autofocus system. However, adapting those lenses on a Fujifilm is supreme.
