Testing Micro 4/3 Quality - Is It Good Enough? (Full Kingfisher Photography Session)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- One of my favourite subjects to photograph in the Summer has to be the amazing Kingfisher. It is quite simply a stunning bird, many people have only ever seen that blue flash as they course up and down the river looking for their next meal. There are simple ways though to watch Kingfishers at close quarters. Join me as we head for a local river and deploy a few tactics to help us get some close up shots of these aquatic hunters.
I keep getting asked about my new kit namely the OM Systems OM-1 and Zuiko 150-400 f4.5 Pro Lens and whether the micro 4/3 system can hold its own against the likes of its full frame cousins. Check out some of the images at the end of the film and make up your own mind.
Anway grab a brew and a fig roll (other biscuits are available) and sit back and enjoy the film!! Thanks for watching.

Cracking images Simon. Most of those who question the IQ of Olympus/OMD - S cameras, especially the OM1, have never owned or used one. They rely on a certain couple of UA-camrs for their information. Prior to owning my EM1X , EM1.3 and now my OM1's, I owned a Sony A7R4. Marvellous though it was, I have not missed the 60MP.
What exactly is your point
Cheers Pete, certainly no complaints on the image quality and resolution from me 👍🏼
Simon walking along with log in hand, you know he's a happy bunny! You were meant to come back the next day, SUPERB mate!!
Haha, thanks Steve. Cheers for watching 👍🏼
Great tips mate! You’re so right, I’ve had so many days with nothing and it’s so more satisfying when they do show up and you get a nice shot👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Simon perseverance is the key I just started with birding and my OM1 MK3 with a classic 50-200 and 1.4 convertor love it so far!
Great video! I am in the process to switch to a m4/3 kit and I am loving what I have seen so far.
Thank you Simon this was really special to see these beautiful birds.
Truly uplifting. I see kingfishers on the canal i live near , really lovely to see.
Awesome video… Thank you! Didn’t see the lens cover in your list… I like it!!
Absolutely amazing good on you who says patience doesn’t pay off. Brilliant 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers Gez👊🏼
Great video had to chuckle to myself when I saw you lugging about the perch, many thanks for all your hard work you put into these videos Simon
Haha, I had a bit of a sweat on Chris when i got to my spot!! Thanks for watching 😅👍
Nice clip..... always so interesting to see the behind-the-scenes stuff and compare it to my own experiences.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow ! Indeed....stunning video taken showing interaction between adult and Juvenile Kingfisher.
Stills images are truly superb.
Nice one...thanks for sharing.
Thanks for supporting the channel 👍🏼
Those Kingfishers so at ease in their natural behaviour. Fantastic. And all that under the eyes of the King of Camouflage himself. Can imagine your excitement to see the result of your lovely expedition. You're really a great Bird and nature photographer so I only can give you a big Wow in return. Good bird photoraphy is far from easy but it becomes magic under the shutter button of experienced masters. Big wow for the King.
Kind words indeed. Gotta love a bit of camo!!😆Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 👊🏼📷
I watch Robert fuller’s UA-cam channel and I’d have to say your up there with the best of them pal , you say your not a professional wildlife photographer 😮 think you need to pack your day job in because I’d happily watch your videos all day , top work 👌
Amazing footage Simon! Glad to see your new rig is everything you wanted! I recently swapped my D500 and Sigma 600 for a Sony A9 with the 200 to 600 and it really is a game changer! Keep the great videos coming and we appreciate your hard work and dedication mate!
Thanks for the kind comments, loving the new setup. Great for a wildlife vlogger. Glad the Sony is working out for you, I nearly went down that route myself 👍🏼 You keep watching and I'll keep filming🎥👀😆
How are u finding it , I have recently done the exact same I got the Sony a9ii with the 200-600 just waiting on the lens to come I’m super exited!
@@weedavo04 Hey JD! Yeah it is a breath of fresh air and the lens is super too! took me a while to get sorted with the tracking and stuff but I am still getting used to it! the autofocus is really great! Hope you will be as happy as I am with your new rig!
Hi Simon ! Great Video !!! Beautiful photos !!!
Glad you like them Evgeny 👍🏼
Another fine day afield, Simon. Thanks for sharing.
Youre welcome Clifton, thanks for viewing 👍🏼👀
FANTASTIC!!! Pal what a cracking video very enjoyable and inspiring Simon keep em coming. Thanks Karl
Many thanks Karl, will do
Good job man! Good job!
Cheers Vlade 👊🏼
Great video Simon. Well done
Thanks Richard👍
Superb setup... It's awesome to see a few kingfishers on a perch like you did.. fantastic 👍😁
Massive FAN of your work Sir - Belting..!
Much appreciated Brent, thanks for supporting the channel 👍🏼
hmmm......you hit the nail on the head when you said something like "its all about the field work and putting the hours in, and persistence" plus of course, the dedication, years of experience and knowledge makes a huge difference - all this was clearly evident in the video - the results were outstanding , you earned a packet of fig rolls :)
Cheers Cliff, figs ordered!!😆 Its all about making it happen !!👀👍🏼
Well done. This make my day.
Thankyou Zoran👍
@Simoneardley absolutely wonderful 👏 like you say just being out there...I walk my bit of river as often as I can and have had results...then one day I sat near a tree over the river and got a hunting shot 🎉 I'm definitely getting one of them ghillie blankets 😃
Nice one Solac, the ghillie blankets give some great concealment 👌🏼👀
Simon, any chance of a clothing video, i.e., wellies, hats, base layers, etc, if you get a chance would be much appreciated.
Ive got one in the pipeline Steve 👍🏼👀
Beautiful footage of some youngsters, a delight to see. Lovely images too, well worth the effort.
Thanks Dale and thankyou for watching the film 🎥👍🏼
Magical!
Cheers Neil👍🏼
Amazing shots, I've just started photographing them here in Australia, I wish I had more patience and time, but I'll get there. Your the first person I've seen shooting with OM gear and I'm really impressed
Lovely footage and great pictures of the kingfisher Simon.
Thanks Mark 👍🏼
Brilliant pictures Simon, what a beautiful little River 👍👍
Thanks Alan, the river is so much cleaner than years ago and the wildlife has benefitted massively from the water quality. Great to see 👀👍🏼
Brilliant!
Cheers Neil👍🏼📷
I've never seen a more well-developed camo strategy. You could do a video on that!!!
Thanks Fred, gotta love a bit of camo!!👀👌
Beautiful photos!
Thankyou 👍
Fantastic Simon, thank you for all of your recommendations and tips. Great film and photos.
Cheers Gary, glad you found the film useful 👍
Oh notice you have a microphone attached now, is that a new thing, I've been trying them out for a while, love you to review one or two of them, another great video
Awesome Simon, top notch video. Perseverance paid off, wildlife is a waiting game. Glad your getting on with the OM1, there's always doubters that have never tried the OM1, their loss.
Cheers Ray, it certainly is a waiting game. Put the hours in and the rewards will come. The OM1 is a superb camera, well suited with it.
fantastic vlog ! quality images again I love your honesty and perseverance it shows through in the end with that awesome footage and those still. Brilliant.
Thanks Pat, thats what its all about. Patience and perseverance!!👊🏼📷👌🏼
Hi Simon,
Great Video and some really amazing footage of the kingfisher. Your images are lovely and sharp. It goes to show what can be achieved with some patience and you have definitely cracked this one...🙂👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Eddie, I cant fault the image quality to be honest. Thanks for watching 👀🎥👍🏼
Another great watch Simon! The Kingfisher is a subject that I really haven’t bothered with at all really but I keep thinking I should put some time in with them but when I do it will be exactly the same approach as yourself as in doing the legwork and finding my own birds and just simply doing my thing as I do with all my Wildlife photography. And like you say the images are the bonus and the reward for effort but let’s be honest for the likes of you and I it’s just about being out there with nature on they’re terms !!!
Like I said great watch mate 👌👍
Yeh well said Paul. Love the sense of satisfaction from finding youre own subjects and getting your own unique shots. All the best, Si 👌🏼👊🏼
Watched your awesome Kingfisher video a second time... love kingfishers and dragonflies and as a wildlife photographer myself, I'm preparing for the day I get lucky using my Canon R5 and Canon 100-500mmm telephoto lens... i'll take the tips and tricks I learnt from you in this video and on your channel to help me on my journey. Cheers Simon
Youre welcome Richard, simple stuff really. Stick with it and you'll get the shots youre after im sure 👊🏼📷👀
very very enough.. and exelent..
Excellent stuff Simon. Effort = reward, & you sure put in the effort. Some excellent images & video there in another great vlog.
Thanks for sharing.
All the best,
Nick
Thanks Nick and cheers for supporting the channel 👊🏼👍🏼
Wowsers! That 2nd day was worth your weight in fig rolls! Amazing shots Simon, thank you for sharing. I've been a keen Angler for 40+ years and you've changed the way I see kingfisher pictures forever. I've had them opposite me on the bank but never on my rod, I'm always fidgeting or fiddling with gear. I hope to purposefuly set out to capture that shot one day of it perched on my rod. At least I've got some ideas now. It must be quite an expensive hobby but when I add up what I've spent on fishing crap it maybe a retirement plan. For now tho, I'll keep watching you. Not sure what the photography equivalent is but....tight lines!
Cheers Richard, we'll go with "Full memory card"!!😆 It is an expensive hobby but so rewarding. In one of my older films I did the fishing rod setup and got two on there at the same time. Stick at it mate and the rewards will come. Thanks for following the channel 👍🏼📷👊🏼
Incredible video Simon. Total gentleman. Inspirational
Thanks Richard and thanks for supporting the channel 👍🏼
Cracking footage mate, great interaction between the Kingfishers...👏👏👏
Cheers Keith 👊🏼📷👍🏼
Amazing video. Love the Kingfisher. Thanks for sharing Simon.
Youre welcome Richard. Thanks for the support 👊🏼
27:57 👍🏼
Awesome footage and stills Si,if that isn’t enough to want to get out with the camera I don’t know what is! Thanks for sharing these great vlogs. Hoping to get out when I get back home, I’m thinking Brockholes on Sunday 👍
Awesome 🤩. Simon, I couldn’t find a link to the hide in the description (maybe I need new glasses)
Thanks Roland, theres no direct link to the hide. If you look on Tragopans website and use the code 'TragoSimon5' you'll qualify for a 5% discount.
Awesome mate
Thanks Dean 👍
Brilliant video of these two juveniles Simon. Kingfishers can take a lot of time and effort but do the ground work and it eventually pays off as your shots show.
Cheers James, youre right you dont get a lot of time with Kingfishers, they seem to cover such a big area especially on the rivers.
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers James 👍🏼
Great video, its given me some good information on approaching a Kingfisher I've just seen on a local river.
Great video Simon AND GREAT SHOTS
Thankyou Adrian
Hey Simon! Great images !! Amazing! I really enjoy! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.
OMG Simon that footage was absolutely outstanding, the stills were even better in fact I would go as far as to say 100 times better than the Nikon set up you had that Olympus set up is outstanding.
Thanks Andy, like you said the results are pretty good. Heading in the right direction 👍🏼
What amazing footage - makes it all worth while when you get that sort of result. Keep up the great videos
Cheers Andrew, will do !!👍
Well done Simon - most enjoyable. Look forward to your hide review. Cheers
Cheers Tony, its a great little hide. The more I use it the more I like it👍🏼
Great content, you certainly showed your "Percheverance" on this one!
Cheers Andrew, i was thinking of 'branching' out to another genre but I'll 'stick' with wildlife!!😉
Absolutely superb videos of the kingfishers -- ya done good!!!! Hope you're enjoying the OM1 and the new lens, it does an excellent job for you.
Cheers Woody, yeh really enjoying the new system 👌
Fantastic stills and video footage, you'll be given simon king a run for his money 😉,no but in all seriousness very well done Simon, great job and thanks for sharing 👍,as we say in welsh bendigedig translates to wonderful.😊
Hey Simon, I am still not used to you swinging that white lens around. Excellent setup with the hide and perch. Greg
Haha, yeh its a bit weird. No gold bands eh!! Its doing a decent job though I must say!!👍📷
Can’t wait for the Lagopus feature… please do the two versions with the dedicated cover… I’m sure that Tragopan will send you them 😉 best wishes Paul
Cheers Paul, yeh will do. Hopefully filming it this week 👍🏼🎥
Great vlog Simon, super vid and stills. Definitely a young bird - you can tell by the white tip on the beak, adults don’t have that. Keep up the good work, and if you ever want to venture up the Ribble valley then give me a shout.
Cheers David, might see you out there some time. Its been a good year for the Kingfishers near me, great to see them bombing up and down!!
OMG Simon another awesome blog, whens the book coming out :-)
Cheers Andi, a book would be nice mate!! Maybe when I retire, who knows👍🏼
Great footage Simon. Way to put in the effort!
Glad you enjoyed it Mike, thanks for watching the channel 👍🙂
Another great Vlog Simon, I don’t know how others feel but I’d like to see a video on how you select your position on the river for Kingfisher shots. Why you set up where you do etc
ATB 😎
Great suggestion!I'll have a look at it 👀
Wow! Awesome Images!
Thanks Duane 👍🏼
Spot on again Simon..keep it up mate..hope to bump into you one day..
You never know Dennis, thanks for the continued support 👊🏼
That was brilliant Simon… I live in France an I need to put more time in to get shots anywhere near yours
Fantastic place to live Chris, stick at it mate. As i say "Make it happen" 📷👊🏼
Great video and images of kingfisher. I always enjoy your videos, but they have gone to a new level with the Olympus gear. Would love to get that 150-400mm lens.
Beautiful footage Simon, ive just brought the same hide not had chance to use it yet, im off to Mull early September where hopefully ill put it to good use
Thanks Andy, its a cracking little hide. Great that you can just use it as a chair or as a proper hide. Had some good results with it, have a great trip!!👍🏼👊🏼
Hi Simon, great vid again..... Can i ask.. Where did you get the ghillie camo netting from please....
Hi Ant, thanks mate. Ghillie blanket is from Tragopan. Use TRAGOSIMON5 for a 5% discount code on their website. Thanks for watching.
Great Vlog Simon pity about the quality but didn’t spoil it, beautiful birds, I’ve got them in the river bottom of the garden I’ve got the V6 hide set up at the moment photographing them,
Cheers Col,do you mean the video quality? UA-cam was still rendering the HD version so it was only in 720 for a while. Should be in 4K!!
@@simoneardley sorry mate yes just the focus issues otherwise it was a cracker and very informattive
Nice session. You got some amazing shots and footage. Do you have any of the public coming up curious about your blind? Seem to remember watching a film when you were down at the ocean and attracted some attention 😉.
Cheers,
Scott
Cheers Scooter, I always try and get myself somewhere well hidden and out of view. No bother this time but like you said I did get approached on Mull. Not great when youre trying to hide and someone wants a conversation !!😆🤔
Beautiful video Simon thoroughly enjoyed it
Where are you from hear a chorley area accent
Cheers Jason, not far away in Bamber Bridge 👍🏼
@@simoneardley
I'd love to get out with you sometime
Another great vlog Simon, I wonder what happened to espens om1 in Costa Rica.
Thanks James, not sure but I bet he's glad he had a backup camera. Disaster averted but I bet he wishes he had the firepower of the OM-1 👍🏼
The IQ of the OM1 looks pretty good to me! Great to see the interaction between the adult and youngster. Kingfishers don’t usually stay together very long after the initial feeding stage. After a few weeks the adult will stop feeding rhe young and even chase them off to find their own territory. Just off to check the prices of OM gear, but still not ready to make that leap! 🤣
Good info on the Kingfishers mate, I know its a big decision changing brands Steve. Maybe try and have a borrow and see what you think before you commit, thanks for following the channel.👍🏼👊🏼
Great shots of the Kingfishers Simon did you see the one I got at the Wolseley Center it’s on my channel regards Dave
Thanks very much Dave, I'll take a look 👀👍🏼
Fantastic images and videos. The OM-1 works really well, just can't justify the 150-400mm but the 100-400mm is pretty decent.
Yeh its a chunk of cash Brian but like you say the 100-400 is still a great piece of glass
How do you find these places where there are Kingfishers?
Lots of time in the field, local knowledge and patience. If you find a likely looking river with some slack water throw in a little fishing groundbait. See if there is small fish activity and theres a likelihood youll get Kingfishers around.
The Lagopus hide you were using in this vido certainly looks a lot lighter and more compact to carry than the Nitehawk chair hide you used to use.
I'll be honest Robert its not as light as it looks but its a really capable bit of kit. I'll give all the details when I do the review. 👌🏼
Awesome😍
Cheers John👊🏼
Hello Simon, thank you very much for your great field work, you are great, you are a teacher. Please, if you can activate the translation of subtitles in the videos, for those of us who are not English we can understand you.
All the best to you friend.
Thanks Miguel, it should be working now 👍
Welcome to OM1 plus 150 400 country. I totally endorse your feelings about the equipment it is a game changer. Loved your video, but it would help us all if you would tell us the settings you were using at the time. Such a lot of the people I used to watch on UA-cam seem to have left the site why? There is a shortage of help out there, could you, should you step in? Give it a go. Great accent by the way, a fellow Northerner.
Hmmm. Well the closest I've got is coffee and a KitKat!.
Interesting video, been thinking of swapping to the em-1x to save on weight/costs.
Cant knock a kit-kat Andy😄 Good luck if you do end up swapping, always nice to try new gear 👍
Great video, stunning images, what ruck sack do you use to carry all your gear and camera? Like the way it can carry camera and you can fill it up with gear as well, keep up the good work
Thanks Johny, its a Shimoda X70. Its a big old bag but great for getting everything in bar the kitchen sink. Super comfy on the back too
Not Bad Simon,..... I guess if you don't have a full set of finely sharpened Crayola's to draw with, you might have to accept what you got ! Me though, I, just like you, use my OM-1 and 150-400, ..... only handheld out here on Vancouver Island with no hides, coz we's wild folk !......... keep at it !
Cheers Ken, its a great setup isnt it. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 📷👍🏼
I see Simon that you are using a Shimoda Bag, lovely bags even if a touch expensive. I’ve got the Explore 30 which is big enough for me to carry! Which model is yours & how are you finding it? Thanks John
Hi John, mines the X70. Its a big bugger but when I'm vlogging its a real bonus for chucking all the extra gear in. Big and expensive but you get what you pay for 👌🏼
In Australia you might need a zip up hide or get a black snake around your legs😅.
Haha, yeh everything over there wants to eat you!!!🤣🤣
The audio is quite tiring a lot of the time with a lot of background noise. How about using a lavalier microphone? Maybe a Røde Wireless Go or something similar?
I was 100m from a massive weir, not much chance of blocking that sound out!!
@@simoneardley by getting the mic closer, you don't need to turn up the gain nearly as high, so all other sounds will be much weaker in the recording.
Brilliant video as always.
Gutted though that UA-cam have nobbled your channel with mid role adverts, which kill great content like yours.
For me it completely ruins the experience of the personal feeling great channels like yours have. Wish UA-cam would pack it in!!
Your immersed in the moment, actually feeling like you're there with you absorbing your great knowledge, then boom, mid role advert = moment and great content destroyed 😭😭😭
Sorry to be negative, but hate UA-cam spoiling things for great channels like yours!!
Thanks for your honesty Marcus, its not UA-cam but the channel owners who decide on the Ads placement. I have resisted putting mid channel adverts on but these films cost money and time to create and just wanted to create a bit more revenue. I'll see what the feedback is like over the next couple of films and adjust accordingly. Thanks for the support 🎥👊🏼

Thank you for your reply. And sorry again to be negative!!
I thought it was UA-cam spoiling things yet again, mind, I suppose they are really because if they were paying you fairly for the adverts at the start and finish of each video (which I always watch, and occasionally click on, to boost your revenues) awesome creators like your self wouldnt feel the need to have the midrole adverts.
You sound nearly as obsessed with perches as i am..i have never met or read or watched anyone who shares my opinion..until now..to me the perch is 50..dare i say 60% of the image
Haha, great minds and all that!! It's all about the perch👌👀
Beautiful piece, Simon. One question - roughly what was the distance from your hide to the perches?
I see you were managing your shutter and ISO for perched birds - and you said that was your plan at the start. I am curious, what limit do you try to put on your ISO with the OM-1?
I just picked up my 150-400 and started learning both my OM-1 and the lens - I also shoot Nikon (D850 or Z6ii), primarily with the 500mm 5.6 PF. The AF, frame rates and computational features of the OM-1, and the huge scope of this lens, are amazing - game changers for me. I’ll keep watching your videos as part of my learning experience.
Finally, the best lesson from this piece is ……… patience. That and, I’m assuming, fig newtons.
Hi Brian, the perches were about 25 ft away. Trust in your concealment!! Ive been getting useable images at 8000iso. If I'm up at that range I'll run them through Topaz denoise, its an amazing piece of software. Well worth the money 👍🏼
@@simoneardley thanks Simon.
What no cow's
🤣🤣
I’d rather hear nature than the loud music
If I hadn't put the music on, all you would have heard was the enormous thundering weir about 100m downriver😉
Great shots Simon! Kingfisher can be really tricky sometimes, always full of mockery of the perches we put on!
PS: ya really spent the first part of the video with your fly open? lol
Haha, yeh I spotted that in the edit but too late😆. Thanks for watching 👍🏼👀
Friday night 18:45. Nothing of interest on TV. BBC northwest news😕. Beeb2 European diving😕. Like the athletes but that's later. So what can I watch🤔. I know! Simon Eardley's got a new vlog out!😃, that's top TV, I'll watch that. So there you have it, Simon you've topped the TV listing, beaten all the terrestrial TV channels 😀. Another great vlog, top work 👍
Cheers Michael, that shows how bad the telly is mate🤣Thanks for the support, I appreciate it👍👌
Great work! Amazing !
Thankyou 👍🏼😃
