  • The FULL LENGTH version of the Coal Fired Steam Cycle. See "Jenny" in glorious 19 minute detail!
    Introducing the Sanderson Steam Cycle! Named "Jenny", this home built coal fired steam cycle was painstakingly crafted over the last 4 years to look like it could have been built in the 1920's.
    A traditional coal fired steam engine on 2 wheels! You've seen nothing like this before.

      I completely agree. I'm just wondering why he decided to use the Steam Tank fro structure and not build an undercarriage. Now, it's obvious his Steam Bike is for home use and for driving around the Neighborhood, but I am still left wondering. It saves on room not having an under-carriage and on weight as well. The tank is solid enough for structure, but the handles are directly welded to the Pressure tank and the front-end is supported by the tank and tank alone. That's concerning from a structural point of view.
      Let me be clear when I say that I also agree, his workmanship is impeccable. And you certainly don't need to have a degree to be an engineer, and Sandy proves that. I'm just wondering why he didn't build an under-carriage or uni-body.

    • @alexhando8541
      @alexhando8541 3 роки тому +8

      @@theshadowsovereign8914 in terms of traction engines (sometimes referred to as steam tractors in North America), the British tradition is to use the boiler as thr structural part of the vehicle as well as the source of power, so maybe he got inspiration.

    • @theshadowsovereign8914
      @theshadowsovereign8914 3 роки тому +2

      @@alexhando8541 Yes, I just googled 'STEAM TRACTOR' and went directly to the images section. These Steam Tractors are considerably larger than the bike and they also use the tank as structure. Makes sense since these are huge tanks, but then again the wheels are mounted to the bottom of the tank, not the top of the tank. That is putting strain and stress and the mount points of the handlebars. The wheels are not 'holding' the tank in position, they're 'hanging' the tank into position. Albeit the fact Sandy installed 4 mounting points for the handlebars to the tank, it would have been more structurally sound if the handlebars would have 'cradled' the tank, instead of 'hanging' the tank.
      This is an observation. I am invested in this as it has peaked my interest. It's a wonderful build. I'm a Plumber by trade, so I know what it's like working with copper and steam lines. This work is amazing. And please don't mistake my observation as being critical or being subjective. It is an objective point to a legitimate engineering question.
      Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. :)

    Beautiful job Sandy, It's got the look of 100 year old technology, I've been thinking of building one myself but using the technology of the 1930's Doble Steam Car using a steam generator which creates only the steam needed to power the engine much like an on demand water heater, then condensing the steam back into water and recycling it. also taking it one step further by using a radial steam engine mounted inside the rear wheel. I'm also thinking of using liquid fuel such as waste motor oil. but that project will probably wait until I retire. Like I said beautiful job, keep it up.

    Anthracite, 5:10, is the highest grade of coal available. It is almost entirely carbon, with very little sulfur, hydrogen, nitrogen or anything else to make smoke. It burns very hot, but is very difficult to ignite, hence the kindling and the paraffin (kerosene) soaked paper. He uses small pieces for easier igniting and faster burning, to make more heat out of a smaller burner.

      A lot of truth in that, although a good grade Dry Welsh Steam Coal is just as high quality and clean burning, with just a touch more volities which makes it more controllable, very good steam raising, as well as a little easier to light. Currently easily available and no more expensive than Chinese anthracite, although all that may change is the welsh government is refusing to renew Foss-y-fran's extraction license.
