I think there is a scene in this book that pretty sums up the problems with feudalism and that is when the French are besieging Aquitaine, in desperation Edmund launches a surprise raid and kills a bunch of French soldiers before retreating back to his fortifications. After Edmund formally surrenders, he is congratulated by the French commanders for his daring actions with the chief French commander Charles de Valois constantly bragging about how Edmund is his nephew. The problem with feudalism is that all the rulers are related they have their wars over stupid and petty things and then act like nothing happened but that doesn't change the fact that people died. In fact, Druon mentions this a few times in the series. This is a sharp contrast to George rr Martin whose feudal system's problem being tribalism whereas Druon sees it as the fact that the nobility are a big squabbling family that dehumanizes everybody beneath them and that marriages between the house solve nothing.

I have thought before thought that the houses in westerose should be more inter married and we should see it down the generations more clearly with the starks and Lannister especially as we know the redwines and Tyrell’s are inter married
