Hello. I’ve watched plenty of your old mini videos. Stumbled across the R56 cooper D oil change. My son has the same car. I have a 93 SPI cooper. Getting to the point, have you done an R56 cooper D auto gearbox transmission fluid change video?
Hi buddy and thanks for watching. With regards to doing the transmission fluid change on an auto, this is a job I haven't done however I've done a manual transmission oil change a couple of times on the R50's but didn't film it. I can only imagine the job would be simple enough but will be a tad more complex as there will be a filter to swap out
Hi Alex, the filter cartridge has a little nipple with a rubber seal on it and the knack is just to pull it off. Some filters need a good yank to break them free. Thd good news is, you can change the filter without dropping the oil!
Just to let you know Dave the MINI R56 has a capacity of 3.7 litres of oil. If you overfill these Mini's they will smoke and knacker up. Use the fill capacity not the dipstick. Please check and confirm with MINI main dealer before you start.
Thanks Alan, I've done a few jobs to these cars over the years but never filmed them. The car is about to receive another oil service as it's fast approaching 6000 miles since the last one
@@Alanphuphalee I try and do my oil services every 6000 miles however the wife's car has slightly ran over this so that needs done. The car featured in this video is my Clubman and is sitting on 155,000 miles now but is getting close to needing a DMF and clutch :(
@@BMCWorkshop hello Sean I also think I need a new dmf and clutch soon as I have a rattle from passengers side engine bay whilst in neutral, did u have the same problem?
Hi Aaron, I've never had that problem however I had planned to do the clutch and dmf on my white Clubman but instead I traded it in for another car. Biggest regret as I miss the Cooper D like mad. The new car is good but its not s Clubman 😒
Great video.! Couldnt the manufacturers just put a removable inspection cover that would make access to the sump plug nice and easy. Silly me that would be too convenient
Very educational video Sean, sadly most modern cars have so many plastic covers, sump tray etc, they put most guys off ever starting to do a easy job like an oil change.
Hi Mark, I rebuilt the turbo on this car a few years ago and the job is fairy easy although it does involve a fair bit of stripping down of the car. If you are going to overhaul the turbo then I'd advise renewing all the pipework feeding the turbo. I rebuilt mine for just under £200 which included a new cartridge. Remember to do an oil/ filter change at the same time
Hi Matt, hope your well buddy. The car your looking at has the PSA 1.6 Hdi engine in it and its bullet proof. So long as you service it regular then it won't let you down. The only real issue I've had was injector seals but that's a very easy fix and a cheap one
Cheers Jeff. The R50 will be going back on the road once were completely out of winter and I plan on renewing the struts/ springs and too mounts. I have had brand new oem parts (except for the top mounts) for 2 years now but the car has been off the road for over a year
Lei Fang it's always best to try and have the car level when draining the oil. I usually remove the plug then go away for half an hour and have a cup of tea lol
Sean C Thanks for the reponse Sean. I thought you only used 2 stands to do the job , that raised my question. From you reply I guess i was wrong , you actually used 4 stands to support the car nice and level. is it right?
Hello! I bought the same car (except it's an R55 Clubman) and this video is exactly what I needed as a guide for a self service oil service. Thank you very much! Just out of curiosity, I noticed that my car as well emits that hissing noise when I open the front cover. Do you happen to know what it is due to?
Hi Omar, the car featured in the video is an R55 Cooper D Clubman. With regards to a hissing noise from your car then I'd be checking all the hoses to make sure they are secure. It may also be a dry bearing on the tensioner/ water pump/ alternator etc
@@BMCWorkshop thank you Sean! I didn't even notice it was a clubby :) Regarding the noise, it definitely isn't something mechanical or due to hoses not correctly fit, but something electronic. It is clearly present in your video as well at about 12.10 when you turn off the engine. I hear it also when I open the bonnet for inspection, if I leave the bonnet open it'll last a few minutes then stop..
That electronic noise is just a warning to say that the bonnet is open. It does last for about a minute, maybe less then goes off. Both my Clubmans do this
Over filling is something I've just done. Put 4 litres in on Monday so over by 300m. What can I expect from this now the engine management has come on?
Hi Mark, you'll need to drain out some oil, basically pull the plug off and put it straight back on then check your level. Alternatilivy you can suck the oil out via the dipstick tube if you have a big syringe and a long piece of old windscreen wash pipe
@@markjohn4802 providing it wasn't over filled my huge amounts it should be okay but you will still need to lover the level if its overfilled as it can cause internal damage if left unchecked
@@markjohn4802 when you put 4 litres in, was this when you done an oil change? Re the eml light you will need to have the code read to see what it's saying and take it from there. How far up the dip stick is the oil level?
BMC Workshop thanks man I’ve had 4 a one and two convertibles now this one had it 2 days and the window regulator just snapped lol. New things on the R56s bug tho like it turns off if I want to listen radio without the engine on etc
@@sshaunss The regulator snapped on my white clubman a few years ago and it was caused by a leaky door seal. I got another regulator from the breakers yard and changed it. It's a fairly straight forward job to do. Just remember to mark the window position before taking it out as they can be a pain to get right again! I traded in my white Clubman a couple of years ago for a Tucson, love the Tucson but it was a big mistake sacrificing my Clubman which I regret. At least I still have my Hot Chocolate Clubman and R50 in the fleet
Mark, I wouldn't give the R56 petrol engine the time of day. Absolute lemons of engines... My R50's engine is the Tritec and it's bullet proof. BMW made a mistake by using the Prince engine in the R56
Hey Sean nice to see a modern mini video from you I am thinking to get one for the track Have you ever taken yours to the track Here is some Scottish Mini fun from 2017 ua-cam.com/play/PLshsV4EVEFCGjIRAXgRNf7v6Ok9XPd3aS.html
Some good looking cars there. The 1st Generation's are undoubtedly the best looking and best performing cars. Then came the 2nd Gens and it went downhill from there lol
Sean C the channel Mod Mini ua-cam.com/users/khammo01 I found is excellent for BMW mini although there are a few other good ones I have seen on bodyshell track prep I guess you are talking about R56 being the good model to get
Oil should be BMW-LL 04 Longlife spec why you using GM OIL not mini/bmw or castrol shell etc to LL04 spec. Correct oil and filter is essential. Also note…use good fuel filter like Bosch or Mann and not those cheap inferior ones, they may cause major issues. Never use wrong oil and it’s 5w30 SPEC Bmw LL04 fully Synthetic.
Yes it’s not bmw/ mini approved or spec gm genuine oil has the following spec Dexos2 5W-30 Fuel Economy. Synthetic. ACEA C3. API SN/CF. Note dexos 2 is not approved for the vehicle
Following your video tonight. Thank you from across the pond!
Thanks buddy!
Wow no cap on.. first-time to see you with it off
Dai, well spotted! No cap required today as this is a clean job lol
