I just ran across you series of videos and the timing couldn't be more perfect. I'm carving my first mini-mountain out of expanding foam for a background and was thinks that a cover layer to help shape the foam is a perfect solution. I've added the related videos to my watch later list. Thanks so much for posting.
Glad you found the videos... I have never been someone who makes "How to" videos, but I found another guy on UA-cam using the batting and latex paint over carved styrene insulation. After trying it, the thought dawned on me to add the expanding spray foam to the "recipe"... It worked so great, I had to share it. Over 40 years of building layouts with plaster, I found this so much better, easier, faster. I have embedded cast Hydrocal rocks in my Spray Foam mountains they look great. I don't have a single cast plaster or hydrocal mountain or hill on this 23 x 40 layout, and I'll never go back to the old traditional plaster methods ever..... Here's a link to the original UA-cam video from Model Trains & Colorado's Joint Line ua-cam.com/video/9C6aHEoUWYg/v-deo.html
Been going around the internet looking for terrian ideas and landed here. The batting is a great idea and I'm going to be trying it. I'm not sure about the brand of foam you are using but generally they work better if they are held upside down because the foam is heavier than the propellant. It should fight you a lot less. But there is something to be said about holding it upright, it comes out slower and that might give you more control. Thank you for the content.
thanks, make sure you see the UA-cam videos done by Scale Model Trains & Colorado's Joint Line. This is where I got the tip about using the low loft batting, and flat Latex paint.... I just added the "spray foam base" to his batting scenery base method.
This is an awesome idea! I had seen the other guys video, but like the idea of using spray foam as an adhesive, rather than modge podge like he did. You can also make contours in your hill this way too, which he couldn’t do. How do you secure the edges though?
