Ron, I just discovered your posts and love them. I am making a barnyard scene for my horse-loving sister and didn’t know anything about making a base ground for them. You are great at explaining what you are doing and the products you use. I’ve now gone from procrastinating on the ground to being excited about getting started on it! Thanks so much!
That is awesome. Hope it goes well.
Great video Ron
I make my own molds and they are more flexible than the commercial ones. I usually apply the rock molds directly to the scenery base before the plaster is fully set. The plaster adheres to the hardshell and the casting follows the contours of the base so there is less need to fill gaps. The mold is removed after the plaster sets. There are so many ways to achieve success and your videos do a great job of showing how you do it.
+Jerry Smith Thanks so much. I never wat to come across as having THE way of doing stuff, just suggesting A way and always open to other suggestions to try.
I can't wait to see the improvements. Thanks for reaching out to me
One of the best channels on model railroading I have subscribed to. Thanx Ron
+Walter Christen Wow, that's high praise. Thanks.
You shouldn't be surprised that your channel has been well received. The videos are relevant. The video quality is excellent. The presentation is very well done. Keep up the good work.
+Harold Herre Thank you so much. I will do that.
just found your site I am building my 2nd layout after 30 years . You know kids need the rooms well they are out of the house now somewhat. time to start all over again I will be doing ho not n but the ways of doing it is the same. Got a lot of good ideas. Keep up the good work
That's awesome. Good luck building. Let me know how its going.
I wore this camp shirt today because I am at camp this week as this video uploads. In fact, the voice over was recorded at camp, thus the background noise--sorry.
I know that plaster doesn't really "dry," it cures. That is why extra water weakens plaster--it makes if more porous as the plaster literally cures around droplets of water within.
I could have added a drybrush of yellow before the white on this rock which might have added a little more to the interest of this rock, but I still think it came out nice.
Thanks for watching--and reading.
Nicely done Ron. I always enjoy your videos, keep up the great work.
cuz you rock ron, ive watched many
your great ron 2021 this time
Thank you Ron.
Lolol... midnite. Its 4:01 am cuz i cant sleep.... anyways. Its old school but if you get tired of seeing same patterns from your rock molds or want to do a larger mold , dont forget aluminum foil as a mold. My molds on my first canyon/river a one piece. Great vid as always !!! Btw. I saw it but very late to the party on this vid !!!
+Matthew lund Thanks for watching and for seeing it.
hi Ron I most certainly injoyed watching your video on doing certain products iam in the final stage of laying track to the DM railway
Awesome. You should take a bit of video of it with your phone and post it.
Ron, fantastic to the point video. Thanx for all the great info. John from Pembroke , Ontario.
Thank you for your comment and thanks for watching.
great techniques, rocks looks great thanks for sharing.
+CSX 8840 CSX Baltimore sub division Thank you for watching.
Good work man.! Got any video on how you do the attachment from plaster an fascial ? I used plaster
Cloth but few spots are pulling away an just glued an colored again .any better way of
Folding or wrapping maybe thanks
Both widow fabric pieces and similar plastic fibers can be imbedded like rebar into a mold to strengthen/lighten a casting and even a washer-screw can be fixed to a piece so that it bolts onto its base. Indeed on a large casting chunks of foam and even bubble wrap can be put in and the Anciet Romans used small pots in their concrete to lighten the domes the built....
Hey Ron I don’t suppose you remember where you got that short bridge section from? Thank you
Love your presentation.
Chuck
Thank you, and thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
wet water, yeah thats better than dry water, lol. Nice scenery and train set.
+brian t Lol. I saw in infomercial selling dry water--just add water. Thanks for watching.
Nice informative video. Thanks for the tip. And, I saw it. LOL Yeah, I stuck around to the very end...
+Ted Spence Thank you and thanks for watching. Unfortunately you were ninth, but I'm glad you replied.
I saw it, great video Ron. Scenery work is great! - Steve
Thanks for watching today. You were fourth, so you are in.
Cool, thanks Ron!
Watch for the shout-out video this Friday.
looking forward to it Ron! Thanks - Steve
Ron have you ever tried ground goop? That's the paint, vermiculite, glue stuff mixture. I like that as it gives even more texture on top of plaster for blending rocks in.
+KENNY Broomfield hi Kenny. I have not used ground group, although I have purchased the stuff recently to make my first attempt. I hope to make a video about it sometime this fall.
Other than the India Ink for the wash, I'm assuming the rest of the rocks were painted with acrylics?
I saw it, but alas, I was too late. Oh, by the way, Ron, I am VegasN on ModelTrainForum.....
+Po Woodworker Cool. Glad you saw it, glad you told me, sorry younwere too late. Thanks for watching.
No biggie. I enjoy your videos.
Great information.
Great Video Ron, and I saw it.

Thanks for sharing.
Thanks you for watching.
You are welcome. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for another great video. Do you seal the finished rock with anything like scenic cement?
you do such good video

+sheral crowe Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy them. Thanks for watching.
I finally saw it, but I am a little late.... 5 years and 41 days late. LOL😆
🤣🤣🤣
Almost as good as a hot bowl of Oatmeal, and I do love HOT Oatmeal, Cream, Sugar, Cinnamon and Butter.
+IMRROcom I'm going to take that as a compliment, although I'm not completely certain. Lol.
When it comes to a model railroad scenery is the window dressing. A well sceniced layout is of course a thing of beauty. To use an analogy to anatomy the bemchwork is the bones or skeleton. The wiring is the nervous system. The industries are the organs. The mainline is the circulatory system. The yars are the digestive system were items are processed. All of these absolutely need to be dead reliable and bullet proof proor to scenery construction. Especially any area of the layout where trains are hidden from view (tunnels, helices and behind structures in urban setting, industries or heavily wooded areas). If there are running issues in any of these areas they must be sorted out before being sceniced. But stuff happens. So all of these areas should have some way of accessing the track to clear blockages. Access under the bench work, removable fascia and structures that can lift off easily. I haven't been involved in model railroading for a long time. But I remember the problems that happen if you jump ahead before you sort out any issues that can cause problems.
That said these have been a great series of how to videos
Great video, thanks again. Watched until the end but don't have a dedicated channel and recording yet :) Keep up the great vids. You are talented!
+schadowolf Thanks for telling me and for watching to the end. That was fun to do, even if it was midnught, which it actually was.
Watch for the shout-out video this Friday.
Enjoyed this one too!! I use both methods of fixing rocks onto the plaster base.... I prefer the "soft" stick method more, but as I'm sure you've learned, you can't always do it.
This will be a pointless comment, but "I saw it!"
I'm too late for anything, and my channel has just been restarted from zero, with no videos yet.
I just wanted to be involved!!! 😝😛
Carmine 🚂
BTW, if you do a video on doing large rock walls... I definitely want to see it. No matter what level of experience someone has, they almost always have a weak spot.
Mine is doing rock walls.
+PacbeltRR Rock wall are tough to get looking just right. I may do a video on that down the road.
+PacbeltRR Thanks for watching and for your comment.
Could I use an air brush to paint the landscape and rocks instead of a paint brush????
I have done that. You have to really work to get all angles to get the spray in all the cracks and crannys, but yes you can.
Another great video Ron, I built a door sized N scale layout last year and finally decided to get to the scenery stage so im very glad i found your great channel with great content at the perfect time youre doing a great job editing and producing your videos. My question is when you applied the grass texture with the baby jar (great idea) onto the glued surface, is that usually all thats required? whats your opinion on spraying it also with white glue mixed with water out of say a glass cleaner spray bottle? Cheers, Steve from New Zealand
Hey, Steve. Great question. At this stage I would say the spray is unnecessary. This is a fine initial layer. There will be more ground foam of other colors and textures that will follow this and they will be glued down with scenic cement, though I prefer to put it on with a pipette, not spray. The reason is that the very fine material I use in N scale (ground foam, ballast, etc.) tend to ball up under the droplets of even the finest sprays I have tried. Using a pipette and letting it wick into the materials seems to work much better for me, and that will be the subject of an upcoming video, so stay tuned.
Great points there Ron, I have heard of the droplets being a nuisance. and yes they will look worse being N scale, I mustve watched too many HO scale videos last year haha I have an eye dropper so that might do the deed! Thanks for the reply and I look forward to your upcoming videos! especially where I see how you finish off this section
Eye dropper will work. Pipettes hold more, are very handy, and are pretty cheap. You can get packages of 5 or so for just a few dollars at most hobby stores or art supply stores.
When i hear the word pipette i think of one of those cake icing bags, thanks ill look into getting one hah
Where did you get the molds for the rocks
The one's I have are all made by Woodland Scenics. Here are links to a few of my favorites.

real easy way to make rocks do you ever carve rocks from foam board Great explanation and Very nice job
I have done that. I've seen great results with that technique, but I have not done it enough to get those kinds of results myself yet.
Hey, Ron, thank you for sharing this information. you know when you go to the hospital or doctors they now make the cast different colors. I have been wondering if you can add color to the plaster before the water to get a foot hold on your landscape. Because I have seen modelers drill out to place trees and stuff and now they have to go in and do touch ups.
I was wondering if you could take the plaster molds and before they setup to add it to your layout
I bought a half complete layout and am sick of the way the person just layed the rock castings onto the layout. They went in and did all the landscaping and painting but now I am digging up all of it to plaster around the castings to make some of them look as if the are in the landscape and a few as if the earth did move them or something had happened to them.
Again good job. I am enjoying all the N scale modelers, they seemed to be better and friendlier. I got kicked off an Athrean site that was selling models because I asked what Scale are the models. They came back and said Athrean only sells HO Scale trains and I tried to correct that because I have a dozen N scale locomotives by Athrean. Oh they hated that. But I do have and 2 of which are Athrean's Big Boy Locomotive s and I have 2 more on order.
thank you
Yes, I have some N scale Athearn stuff too, though only rolling stock. I have seen people color the plaster for their base, and I plan to make a stab at this myself soon. I will make a video when I try that to show how it goes. As you say, the advantage is no white powder when drilling out for trees. I have never seen anyone do this for rock molds, though I suppose it would be possible. You would still need to do some painting as it would otherwise be very monochromatic, but should be possible nonetheless.
As for casting in place, that is what I did here, if I did not make that clear. You still have to blend between the castings, but they fit the land form much better. Sometimes they don't stick, but they still take the shape of the base so they are easier to glue on if you at least attempted to cast them in place. If you look at my layout tour video, nearly all of the rocks in the mountain areas were cast in place, blended with hydrocal carved to match, and painted and weathered as here only with different colors.
the person you talked to did not know what they were talking about.
+Bill Vassar The community on UA-cam is a pretty good bunch--fae friendlier than some forums I have participated in.
I saw it!
+Joe Saurina Thanks for watching.
How do I make the background.
I saw it....oops. 2019. Ty ron
I saw it.
+IMRROcom You were the or person I was certain would see it.
BTW you were second, so you're in.
Watch for the shout-out video this Friday.
I saw it!!!
Thanks for watching. You were fifth so you are the final entry. You are in.
Since you don't have any videos posted yes, I am going to acknowledge you in that video--that you saw it--but I will feature an additional channel that has posted some videos. Thanks again for watching.
Watch for the shout-out video this Friday.
What about coating the molds in an extremely thin layer of Vaseline as a release agent? The material used to make the rocks shouldn't be able to stick to the molds.
I saw It!!
Giulius71 Thanks for watching. You were the seventh, but the third who doesn't really have any video content posted, so I am going to mention you but feature the next channel that has some videos posted.
Thanks...I am planning a layout and hope to start once I get my basement fixed up...I am excited to post my progress (once I get going) and contribute to the you-tube model railroad community...I think it is an incredible resource for modelers and I have learned more from all of you than I ever could have just by reading...Thanks to you and all the modelers I follow...

+Terry Matvichuk Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately you were not one of the first five, but thanks for watching to the end. 👍
i saw it
+carlos carrion Thanks for watching, and for watching to the end. Unfortunately this mini-contest ended weeks ago, but I'm glad you told me you saw it.
Some people say they saw it. The heck does "it" refer to?
+hntrains Watch the very last couple minutes of the video--after the credits.
i saw it.
CSX 8840 CSX Baltimore sub division Awesome. You were eighth, but three of them have no video content up so they will get honorable mentions but you are the last on who is in.
Thank you it means a lot to me.
Watch for the shout-out video this Friday.
Ron I was a little disappointed in the way you didn't blend the rock in to the surround area. You can see the sharp edges. It doesn't look right. Otherwise it was ok. Still learned something. Thanks
I will do more blending as I do the surrounding scenery, I just haven't gotten back to it yet.
If one does this long enough are they considered a "Rock" God????
If you do it very well you'te a Rock Star.
I saw it ....so did i win ?? hahaha
Sure...but it is an intangible prize--the joy of winning. LOL. Thanks for watching.
Can you synchronize your lips wit your voice.
+hanford brace I went back and rewatched the video and didn't see a sync issue. Maybe it was a a connection lag issue.
