I've got to admit Steph that your Home Depot videos have me jealous. Your store is WAY nicer than the one by my house. Thanks for taking us along on the tour.
We are pretty spoiled Sue. Both our Home Depot & Lowes are great. I really enjoy checking on occasionally. My grocery store is conveniently located in the center of both 😉
Love how you introduce most of the plants and who is easy and who is pet friendly. Also liked that you went over the seed section. First time viewer and have now subscribed
Hi Karen, thank you so much, and welcome 🌱
Yes need to see plants and seeds to get us through the winter!! Thank you ❄️ 🌸
Absolutely! 🌱
I do enjoy your Home Depot and Lowes tours Beth.
Thank you Claire! I love doing them 😊 thanks for watching 🌱
Allocasia and calathea are my favorite looking houseplants and of course, they’re both one of the most touchiest ones to grow 🙄 I killed my allocasia within a few months. I would love to see a houseplant tour of the ones that you have in your own home!
I agree! They do appear to be a bit fussy. My Calathia is struggling at the moment. Fingers crossed I can nurse it back to health.
Houseplants are what sustains me during the cold winter months. Thanks for this video, Steph. I have multiple varieties of sanseveria, african violets, and orchids, as well as anthurium and pothos. My new favorite, which I discovered this past summer is the hoya exotica. It has done very well for me and so I would like to try my hand at some different varieties.
Hi Jolie! How fun, thanks for sharing. I'm going to look up that Hoya. Snake plants (sanseveria) are one of my favs at the moment and pothos because they seem just so easy. Calathea is testing me lol 😆
The houseplant selection there is amazing! Houseplants were my first love 😊🥰 they bring me so much joy during winter months
Hi Yulia! You have a beautiful plant collection from what I've seen in your plant room videos. I have been really enjoying learning about indoor houseplants and adding some occasionally. I agree about them being great over winter months. Keeps me "gardening" indoor over these cold winter months here in Massachusetts.
You should try making a pebble tray under your Calathea and use distilled water … the leaves get crispy ends when they are unhappy … thanks for your videos 💚💚💚🤍🤍🤍🍀🍀🍀
Hi Marion, Thank you so much for your suggestion. I will try a pebble tray. I picked up some distilled water at the grocery store this weekend to give it a try. I've also been running the humidifier near the plants to see if it helps. Thanks for watching!
I've owned a rare and exotic houseplant nursery for years i can give you great recommendations on some great beginner house plants. Alot of key to growing houseplants are their soil mixes and drainage. Also humidity especially for prayer plants.. You've taught me so much about flowers and outdoor gardening that me and my son are getting into and I really enjoy and appreciate your videos. The ficus like to dry out the variegated rubber tree one you were looking at are gorgeous but more prone to rust fungus just be sure not to keep the soil too wet more like succulent same with sanseveria tons of varieties of sanseveria i grow white a variety i love so much. Pothos are a perfect beginner and so many varieties now. The silver pothos are actually scindapsus. They mislabeled alot at home depot these are one of my absolute favorites. I wouldnt recommend cacti and succulents as house plants unless you have big bright windows or grow lights. Euphorbias can do great as houseplants and grow very quickly. I love euphorbia trigona rubras❤ aloe do pretty good as house plants. Terra cotta potted house plants typically dry out quicker and will get build up of minerals on sides of the pot. Also superthrive I would highly recommend water with when repotting new houseplants. ❤ zz plants I highly recommend I love the raven and chameleon variety you rarely have to water the more you neglect them the better they do😂 growing any alocasia inside place in groups and definitely a humidifier nearby also alot of them tend to go dormant in fall and some people think they die but they will grow back in spring. Monstera are great house plants also if you can find a tetrasperma they call them mini monstera and trellis beautifully and prolific growers. Cyclamen I don't recommend at all
Hi Pamela, Thank you SO much for this comment and advice on houseplants. I appreciate it so much! I'm newer to house plants so I have alot to learn. I've learned the hard way to back off on water. I've also decided that most Calathea's are very fussy, and I think I just found a spot where my fiddle leaf fig is happy, its been in this spot for about 3 months now, and its put out 3 new leave buds I found this week! Thanks for the appropropriate name for the plant I thought to be silver pothos. Its beautiful, and I'm really enjoying it. Monstera are so cool! thanks for the suggestion. Thanks again!! Have a great weekend!
Love Houseplants! They add so much more charm and character to a room! I was in a local Home Depot last week
Seeds In, Lots of Succulents (I have quite a few in pots) not many new houseplants yet. Thanks for sharing, as Always great video!
Hi JoLinda! I completely agree. I'm pretty minimal when it comes to indoor decor, but I very much enjoy my houseplant "decor" 💚 it's so nice to browse all the seeds and houseplants this time of year when we can't be out in our gardens. Thanks for watching, and for your comment. 🌱
Please check your plants from the big box stores. I purchased one plant from Home Depot and it had gnats that I was not aware of. They infested every plant on my home! What a mess!
Hi Jackie, I agree, and I discuss that in my video beginning at 14:22. Thank you!
Use mosquito bits they kill fungus gnat larvae.🌧💚🙃
I had the same issue with some I got from Lowe’s
@@daiseegray9110 mosquito bits work at killing the larvae in the soil.
Haha Steph! I went to my favorite houseplant store today and grabbed a couple plants. Try Peperomia! I’m new to houseplants too but this one is fairly easy. I have a couple snake plants too. We have similar tastes! I need to play in the dirt now! Haha
Hi Rhonda! oh I'll add that one to my list to check out next time I'm out looking at houseplants. Thank you so much. I've only started with houseplants about 2 years ago when I needed some dirt to mess with over the winter, and I'm really enjoying learning about them. Thanks for watching!
Oh yes shopping trip 🥰🥰
Hi Jasmine! So fun!!
Thank you for identifying that Ficus! I got one for $6.98 at Kroger and no label! Let’s hope I can keep it alive. I love the painterly quality of the leaves 🍃
Hi Jo! , your welcome. It's gorgeous, enjoy! 🌱
Hi Steph! So many beautiful house plants! Unfortunately, I can't seem to keep an indoor plant alive, but I enjoyed seeing all of the different varieties available at Home Depot. 😊 Thanks!
Hi Mary! Oh lol I knew that feeling all too well. I've killed a few! Try a snake plant they need very little water (1 time a month or so), and don't need a bunch of light. Either that or a Pathos as a trailing plant. Very easy for beginners. Although, it could easily become another plant habit 🤣
@@HookedandRooted Oh I might try a snake plant then! I've always wanted one! Thanks Steph!
Great video! Love the variety you cover. I shop houseplants (and cut flowers) at Trader Joe’s! I find their prices are very reasonable :)
Hi Melissa, Thanks for watching, and I LOVE TJ's! I don't have one close by and anytime I get to go its such a treat. I've only had houseplants over the last 2 years so I'm still learning, but so far, I'm enjoying them and learning about them. Happy to share my experiences.
My Birkin bit the dust....I suspect I overwatered it. Love snake plants! Super easy
oh bummer about the Birkin. Mine is still doing ok, for now. Snake plants are so great! Thanks for watching.
types of plants are very beautiful and the price also varies
Swiss Cheese is Montera plant.
And they get HUGE!
Great video!! I am about 2 years in with house plants and very much still learning but love it, helps with the winter blues lol! I am wanting to get a silver pothos for my living wall I'm starting and would love an Alocasia and prayer plant!
Hi Michelle, Yes I agree, it really does help with the winter blues. I'm really liking my silver pothos. I can't wait to get an Alocasia. I just have to find a good spot for it lol Right now i'm trying to get a snake plant for an 8" pot I have in a low light spot. I found tall spikey snake plants, but not the shorter broader leaf one I was hoping to find. The hunt continues! The prayer plants are gorgeous!! I have a similar looking foliage plant called a Calathea "peacock plant".
@@HookedandRooted i really like the calatheas as well 😊 I found a shorter broad leaf snake plant at Meijer last summer maybe check there if you have that store around you.
Prices for plants at Walmart are slightly lower. If you can get to them before the store kills them they are a good buy lol
lol good to know! My local walmart has a really small selection (1 table). I'll have to explore a few others when I'm out and about. Thank you!
In a previous live I owned an indoor plant hire business and still have lots of plants in my home. The one plant I wouldn’t have is a calathea, they are very finicky plants. All the philodendrons seem to be quite hardy inside. 🇦🇺 cheers Bronwyn
Hi Bronwyn! How fun! and thank you so much for the tips. I'm finding that to be the case with the calathea. But I'm still learning, and thanks to some of the tips I've received on this video, I'm hopeful I may still be able to succeed with them. Thanks for watching! Take care.
Calathea are very high humidity plants they do not like tap water to be watered with. Also they are spider mite magnets one of the hardest houseplants to keep even for seasoned growers
Hi Pam, I definitely see your point on the calathea, my pink star one is a gonner now. Its officially opened up pot for a new addition.
Hi Stephanie, Hope all is well.Just an FYI I was unsubscribed. Good to be back!
Welcome!!
Muy buen vlog
Calatheas ,as well as Little Fiddle, do not like water from the tap… Give them rainwater or water that has been sitting out from the tap for over 24 hours. Otherwise, inside they work fine! Happy planting!
At timestamp 7:50, it is a Monstera a Adesonii! Beautiful plant… And hanging baskets it will trail and if in a pot on a table it will climb a pole.
Thank you so much Misty! I have a humidifier running near them both today and have filled my watering can with filtered water from my brita. Its sitting in the counter and I'll water them tommorow. Thank you for sharing your experience and tips with us. 🌱
It is so unique and beautiful! That is a much better name than "Swiss cheese plant" thank you so much!!
I wanted to add to the calathea some of them need water every three days to 5 days.
I need to go!
Its a fun thing to do in the Winter Amanda. Gives us some plants to tend too. Thanks for watching!
@@HookedandRooted you are right. I need to go and get seed starting stuff. It is that time of year!
Tons of great information. Did you pick up anything?
Hi Michelle, Thank you so much! I was hoping to find a smaller broader leafed snake plant, but found only the large pots with the very tall spiked variety. The hunt continues!
Well my Home Depot had totally empty plant shelves today. Rather disappointing. Guess the midwest gets stocked later than the east coast stores!
Hello, such a bummer. Hopefully they will get a shipment soon. We are in the cold part of winter now. So no outdoor plants. As such, they turn their attention to the indoor plants.
FYI: I found a huge display of Burpee seeds, (regular and organic) at Ocean State Job Lot. They were not expired. I loaded up on basic varieties for a fraction of what I would have paid ordering online.
Great information Pam. Thanks for sharing!! 🌱
Calathias are very high humidity plants.
ivy doesn’t make a great house plant. It tends to get spider mites very easily. Although an outdoor hanging basket would probably do ok.
Great to know Daisy. Thank you so much for sharing 🌱
Amen!
Calathea need humidity
I always wonder how those plant lights work/last. I might try one this year, but the rest of my lights are shop lights
I like LED lights.🌧💚🙃
Hi Nikki! I also have wondered about those type of grow lights. While I'm currently only doing direct sowing and winter sowing, I don't have much need for them. But I do have a couple of smaller lights from when I grew some seeds indoor, and a larger 4 ft shop light that also did the trick.
Monstera adansonii most likely.
Hi there! Yes, another viewer also named the same about what I called the Swiss cheese plant 🪴 thank you!
My Alocasia is only happy in the bathroom...every other room in my house it didn't do well
Good too know. Sounds like they need humidity. Thanks for sharing!
The calatheas needs humidity. I had several and all but one died.
Hi Stacey, Thank you so much for that advise! I really appreciate it. I'll place it near my fiddle leaf fig that i've been running a humidifier by about once a week.
@@HookedandRooted I think they need more humidity than that. 🌧💚🙃
@@judymckerrow6720 Yes, I have a friend and her plant room temp is near 80 degrees and like over 60% humidity.......crazy!
Same for me with the calathia steph. Very finicky.
Hi Cyndi! Here's 2 tips I've been getting in the comments: 1. They don't like tap water. So use distilled water or rain water of possible. 2. They like humidity. Thanks for watching! 🌱
Thanks.
Monstera adansonii
Thank you so much Deborah! Much better name than Swiss cheese plant 🪴
I have several kinds of ivy in my collection. They are so pretty but 100% cannot be planted outside. Very very distructive.
Hi Briana, that seems to be the general consensus among other comments. That ans spider mite prone. Thanks for sharing 🌱
I give up with ivy
Hi Sabine, I have been hearing it can be quite problematic. It appears your not alone there.
I did as well....every one I had died
Stop repotting your plants so soon 😂and Calathea hates tap water .
Hi Marcy! Thanks for the advice. I agree and actually mention that they dint need to be repotted right away. I keep mine in the store soil for a while until they need reporting most of the time. I will get some humidity on my calathea asap! Hoping I can save it. Thanks for watching.
Yes agree it hates tap water. I learned after mine died and i have soft water. Only rain water or distilled water.
@@HookedandRooted you can save it ! It’s all about patients . I only know this by killing five Calatheas I had . Two of mine only have 3 leaves but now I am seeing improvement. I used to repot my plants but found out unless they are in really bad shape when you buy them don’t do it . They need to get used to their new place and repotting them right away stresses them out ! Just keep them in the pot they come in and place that pot inside another decorative pot . Easier to water them to . Calathea also do very well in self watering pots. There is a good UA-cam channel about taking care of every type of plant called Swedish plant guys . Good luck and happy growing
@@lavernsmith6596 you know what all plants love more than rain water ? If you have a stream , river , lake , pond fill up your jugs . The plants love them because of the living organisms in there like an eco system plus it has fish waste and other things as a natural fertilizer.
@@marcymathieu4463 thanks again! I'll be using tap water and 🤞 I can save her. She's a beauty 🌱
