    😔 I live on pine island. I survived Hurricane Ian at the center. I've only seen 1 aerial picture of matlacha.. none of pine island. I'm on the ground and seeing it at eye level.. I could only get as far as froggys in st James City 2 days afterwards. I'm 4 seconds in to the video and stopped to write this comment before I see my island from the sky for the first time. 🥺 ty for this recording of the devastation we encountered here. For documenting it. I'm frightened and sad for what I'm about to see because living in it is heartbreaking enough. 💔 I'm from Ohio originally and have only seen this type of disaster on the news. This was my first hurricane 🌀. I've always believed everything happens for a reason. So true for this event as well. My God... the people here are indescribably amazing. I'm in complete awe at how heroic every single person has been. How warm and kind and totally unselfish in coming to the rescue of neighbors, loved ones and strangers. I can't wait to write a book about the beauty of the people here and share their stories with you. May the lord continue to bless us and help us through the recovery and rebuilding process. And may the friends and family we lost rest in peace and be forever remembered 🙏 and with that.. im going to cry and catch my breath as I begin to watch this video.. with utter sadness and with hope. 💜 Pine Island Strong 💪 amen

    I think we need to be teaching students how to read satellite weather images in our schools. When you have one of those big storms right off your coast that has that classic buzzsaw appearance on satellite, then that’s your warning that it’s time to get the hell out of Dodge! A giant atmospheric buzzsaw is exactly what that storm is!

    Excellent video, thank you. Was hoping to see shots of St. James city. as my parents had a house there on Sycamore Ave . They passed 25 years ago and the house was sold, but we have many fond memories of visiting there. Went to St. James general store many times. Can't imagine all of the devastation there, so sad.

      It's actually St James City from about the 5 minute mark until they head towards Matlacha. The places she calls Buttonwood Key and Treasure Cove are in St. James City. I had to look at a map.

    This hurricane completely destroyed the lives of so so so many in southwest Florida. I’m in fort Myers. My parents brand new house is destroyed, all their new furniture, their cars, their boat, and so did countless others. This is so devastating, I was blessed my apartment on the first floor avoided flooding by living in an area completely safe from the surge, but so many others weren’t lucky. Pretty much everybody lost something or someone so personally valuable to people

    Kellie, paired with the Sanibel-Captiva video these have been SUCH a help to those of us who only vacation in Southwest Florida. We've been coming since 1983 and LOVE it there. We will be VERY sad to have to miss for a time, as we did after Hurricane Charley. In future videos could you repeat what the other people in the party say so we'd know what you're responding to? NOT A COMPLAINT. We look forward to seeing future videos on the pwogwess in cleanup and rebuilding. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    So sad. We loved the Bridgewater Inn. They just did such a beautiful remodel. Took our boat there after Irma and stayed in one of the shanty’s over the water near the peach home. 💔 We wonder if zoning laws will change and they will not rebuild. We see permanently closed on line. Ian, like many hurricanes, has changed our demographics. This is the one. We know living on the beautiful SW Gulf Coast, or any coast, has its challenges and risks. We have so many pictures and wonderful memories of Matlacha. We plan to help where we can. I hope we can save the “Old Florida” Art & Fishing Village. 💙 We are thankful to have been lucky enough to have see and experienced that charm. Thank you for the good video coverage. 💜

    It's awful and rebuilding is going to be a tall order - virtually every structure, it seems, has some sort of damage.....some are leveled, some aren't horrible. The infrastructure is going to have to be rebuilt before the place is livable, even if your house is in reasonably decent shape. But, man, how long is it gonna take to put this place back together? Very sad....so many lost so much.

    The newer homes survived almost untouched bc they were built to code. With that being said though, those well built homes have flooded.

    • @billpii6314
      @billpii6314 Рік тому +2

      All the home were built to "a" code, the newer homes though have a much stricter hurricane focussed code. My Sister actually lives there and she hasn't been able get there to see if her home is even there. NOAA did supply them with a blurry picture so she knows it's there but can't tell the extent of any damage. Her home isn't elevated so its probably flooded at the least. But even if your home is in perfect shape you can't live out there anytime soon.

    Yeah, that’s gonna be South Seas Plantation Pine Island edition. All us retired middle class people who don’t have millions of dollars in cash sitting around will have to go live in one of the rental apartment communities they’re going to build on the mainland, along with the service workers, OR stay out of Florida-it’s for billionaires and MULTI millionaires.

    • @simpleartofhealing286
      @simpleartofhealing286 Рік тому +2

      As a Canadian in British Columbia, I'm realizing how these communities were created, sold and obviously, un-safe to live in as they were not built to code and somebody made a ton of dough! But honestly, these homes are for people with money, and a lot of it! They were definitely taken advantage of. So sad as the developers got their money and knew full well that these homes would never survive a hurricane of any size. I'm sure many insurance companies capitalized on peoples' dreams as well. It's all so sad. These communities are weird by the way! We don't have anything like this in Canada you can be sure. Well, maybe some cottages around lakes but not man-made canals out of sand! So strange to see. It all looks like manufactured land!! Kind of scary to be honest with you. Very weird. Not natural looking at all!

      So don't come here. simple as that. keep your money and your bullshit comments to yourself. There are plenty of working class people that live in these homes. Pine Island is a community full of middle class workers and retired individuals. It's beautiful and very tight knit. It's not some bullshit resort town. Many of the homes were built before code changed many years ago and will be rebuilt to current standards. Pine Island will bounce back to the fullest. Y'all can watch from a distance.

    This is the problem with Florida and its building code denial. These houses are basically at sea level. It is time to wipe out the old codes and rewrite new ones. A few starters, Florida won't be for the "cheap" anymore. You must elevate your house with an 8' concrete 1st floor. The living portion will begin at the second 2nd floor. All Mechanical components will be located at the 2 second floor. If you elevate your flood insurance will cost you less. If you choose not to elevate, your flood insurance will cost you more. Plain and simple. Flood maps for ALL of Florida must be redrawn. This storm was small in comparison to Super Storm Sandy that hit the Northeast in 2012. Life was very different afterwards and Floridians will experience the same. If you can't afford to live in this NEW environment , maybe Florida is not for you.
