Jim, on the flat plate like vacuum chucks you mentioned you coated the surface with Mold Release. Did you in fact mean Silicone Mold Making substance? I use mold release on my resin casting so they release from the molds and also use a silicone mold making kit to make my own flexible molds for casting. Been trying to make a flat vacuum chuck and still running into leak issues.......Thanks
@@JimRodgersWoodturner My mistake on that Jim.......I was assuming you were using a mold release product such as spray on Stoner brand. I now see that companies such as Tap Plastics do make a two part mold release that can be mixed and poured on to create a good vacuum seal. Excellent idea and very do-able. Thanks for your excellent ideas.
vacuum chucking is something i've wanted to add for quite sometime. i acquired a vacuum pump recently so now i need the rest of it! my lathe is a very old craftmaster, similar to the old delta's from the 1940's and has inboard and outboard threads. i turn using both "ends". the oneway vacuum adaptor should work as it uses their taperlock adaptor to thread on to the spindle and i have the adaptors already for both inboard and outboard threads. your thoughts?
thanks for the input, i will order the bits from oneway, they are very close to me so it's easy and quick. virtually all my lathe accesories are oneway already including my chucks. the actual vacuum "chucks" i will make myself, following your video
Any machine bolts of an appropriate size. I generally use 3/8" x 16, or 1/4" x 20. I have a tap that cuts the perfect threading holes in the plastic. For closed cell foam I visit the Michaels' craft store and purchase 12" sheets of colored foam used in kids construction project area for .99 cents a sheet. I also use their foam glue which is probably the same as white woodworker's glue!
Ha JIM JUST Sw this video first time viewer what time of vacuum system do you use I'm Larry from calif thanks for showing me I want to get vacuum system soon.
While the pipes are extruded and not 100% true, they can be recut after the vacuum chuck is created and mounted. The top edge of the chuck where it contacts your project needs to be true. Get thicker walled pipes to allow for more flexibility in truing up. JimR
Excellent and timely. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing, enjoyed it.

Good point! my language choices sometimes are not accurate. You are correct. It works well and lasts for years. (Trust me!)

I agree that your approach seems well thought out and should work.
Once you are using vacuum chucking, turning activities get easier!

Rotation adapter is from Oneway, pump is a Gast-style vane pump. Most of my chucks are homemade.
Does it matter if the pipe is not very round? I've used pipe on a few jigs and the stuff we have here is never very true
