Except that Romanovs had been dead for 25 years when the Soviet national anthem was written. Before 1943, they used The International.

@@Kokurorokuko So it would be a so-called anachronism. That isn't always a problem. The music to Das Boot would have been totally out of place in the 1940s, but it worked. Same goes for using Foggy Mountain Breakdown for Bonnie and Clyde. In the case of the Soviet national anthem, it might work on an emitional, intuitive level for viewers today. But in this case the song has words which are widely known, at least in Russia. Those words don't fit 1917-1918 very well.
I could imagine it playing in the Death of Stalin

@@MysticalApple Musically yes but God save the Queen honors and respects a great nation and a great monarch. The Marseilles seems to me like an international "up yours". Appropriate when your under attack. By the way I'm American and my favorite national anthem is Israel's which translates to "The Hope ".
The Russian Anthem actually sounded pretty good in ragtime...

The current Russian national anthem has the same tune but different words from the old USSR national anthem.

What is basic irony?
The German anthem was a nice surprise. I don't think I've heard it on it's own, but know the tune as a church hymn. Sounds so good!
The music is the hymn "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser," written in 1797 by the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn.

I, too, hadn't realized this tune was also used for the German national anthem. I remember singing hymns to this melody as a kid. I still like the hymn, and it brings peace to a weary soul. Thank you, Joseph Haydn, for the beautiful sound you put to paper. Two hundred years later, and it is still enriching people's lives.

As a german I have to say that seems to be the way the second verse should be sung.
I'll tell you one that you actually shouldn't play in ragtime. Malaysian national anthem. It's against the law to improvise the anthem. When singing it, the singer must sing it to a tee. No embellishments allowed. No riffs, no runs, no adlibs. Can't change even 1 note. Same with playing it on any instruments. The main melody mustn't be changed. If you can ragtime it but keep the main melody and the time signature untouched, then you'll be fine...I think...
Every country in the world has a law protecting their national anthems. Its just rarely enforced unless it becomes a high profile case.
We've had at least one other version of Negaraku, where it sounds like a circus jingle, but thankfully we reverted to the classical "Mamula Moon" tune.
Besides, Negaraku isn't the original song that used the tune. It was composed by a Frenchman in the 19th century. Obviously, many songs have the same tune to it.
@@ajzmn3538 Germany has laws that one shall not insult the national symbols (here: anthem). But this is far from an insult and Germany's generally pretty lenient with that.

Sweden doesn't actually have an /official/ official national anthem. The one we use is one among a number that people just seemed to agree upon eventually.

As a Canadian I approve of that version of Oh Canada as a rag. Clearly only for fun and show but it was actually nice and I enjoyed listening to it.

A 3/4 piece (rather than 4/4 as most other anthems), almost invariably sung at a dirge-like pace and pianissimo (since when was the best way to save your monarch singing them a lullaby?!)
It definitely needs livening up, whether as ragtime or a Viennese Waltz (think Strauss)...

(i'd guess the wedding itself doesn't actually mean all that much to ppl (ofc their s.o. does^^) because its only a one time thing while anime is kinda part of their (everyday)life / identity)
