For those of you that still dont know... Byker Grove was a late 80s teen drama that ran until 2004. It was actually set in a youth youth club in an area of Newcastle called ,byker, and the club was called ,the Grove, as far as I'm aware there was absolutely no school even Involved in the filming. My point was that he can watch the mainland episode without watching One Foot In The Grave and quite happily enjoy the episode. The way some people are acting is that if he doesn’t watch One Foot In The Grave first he will be staring at the mainland episode not knowing what’s going on! Which is complete and utter tosh as the joke is explained right at the beginning of the episode anyway!
The thing about shows written by Graham Linehan is that they really don't have to make much sense as long as they're funny. This is why Bill Bailey became Jesus in Black Books, and Richmond in The IT crowd was able to cling to the ceiling like a vampire. The episode of Father Ted where he ends up looking like Hitler, clearly there was no reason for the dirt to be on the window, so they didn't even try to explain it. I don't think I've ever seen US sitcom take those sort of liberties, but if it's a comedy why can't you do whatever you like?
There are a few older us sitcoms which would have gone in for jokes like that but for the most part they seem to be really formulaic and dull, desparately trying not to make any jokes that might be deemed to be offensive to the sponsors/producers
The mainland is a good episode. You've said before that you want to watch one foot in the grave 1st but you don't need to know much about it other than the main stars catchphrase.
This has a lot of similarities to Wallace & gromit curse of the ware rabbit The rabbit infestation and and jack going out randomly at night and rabbits being attracted to him
Did you notice the nod to Pulp Fiction?When they take the rabbits to Tom to "take care" of them he uses the exact weapon sequence Bruce Willis did in Pulp Fiction( eventually settling on the sword)before he rescues Marcellus Wallace!!! Also the Harvey Keitel lookalike....

Before you do The Mainland - you definitely need to see at least one episode of One Foot in the Grave - much of the humour in that episode (including the main punchline) is based on a character on that series called Victor Meldrew and his well known catch-phrase, played by Richard Wilson; Richard also appears as "himself" in that episode, hence the humour!

I think OFITG holds up very well on it's own. It was a sitcom about a 60-something couple; it was very popular in the UK in the 90s with the main character, Victor Meldrew, (Richard Wilson), entering the language as a synonym for a moaning old git. Even so, he is not an unsympathetic character - and it's well written and acted . My favourite episode is S03 E04 'The Beast in the Cage' about being stuck in a traffic jam. And S02 E11 'Love and Death' about an unsuccessful seaside break is also fondly remembered. In Father Ted, 'The Mainland', Dougal and Ted are fans of OFITG, and come across Richard Wilson, the actor, not the character he plays - with unfortunate consequences.
