Looking at setting up some rainwater catchment totes for garden and potentially fire suppression use. Appreciate the video especially showing the parts for the hose adapter!
Thanks.
You could put a 22 1/2 degree coupling at each corner and at the y to slant pipes down to the y at the ibc tote
Folks, if you use a water bottle instead of the ball in your first flush, you will get a better cleaning effect of your debris as it runs out of the first flush. A little water in the bottom of the water bottle will make it more stable in your flush pipe. A cap on top of the bottle and it will make an excellent float valve. And the best feature of a water bottle over a ball is because of the water bottles botom ridges it will allow the slow drain to completely empty all of the water & trash in the first flush pipe. BEcause the bottle will float higher in the water than a ball and will seal sooner. A ball will seal off the bottom when it's in the lower position, thereby trapping some debris on top of the ball.
Paint all your pipes black first for a UV blocker. Then you can paint the pipe the color of your walls to make it blend in better, so as not to attract too much attention.
I draped black plastic over my tank for a UV sunblock then built a fake fence & cover to hid the water tanks.
I have 4 225 Totes off the house gutters. And then 10,500 gallons of 1500 gallon tanks at the back of my 3000 sqft shop for rain water harvesting. My neighbor 4 houses up has a Commercial Garden and I trade him water for his veggies. He has 2 totes mounted on a trailer and drives it down with his tractor to full up off my harvesting system once a week. So it's a win win for both of us. I water my (few) livestock with the water off either system and can filter and feed into the house though was system of backflow preventers to the neighborhood water tank. Everthing is interconnectedd through 1 inch buried PEX lines and LOTS of valves.
Well done and great details
Thanks
Very useful information. Thank you.
You are most welcome!
this is perfect! Thanks!
Many thanks, I've been looking for "off grid water from lake" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Manonnor Illustrious Magic - (just google it )?
It is a great exclusive guide for discovering how to create your own supply of the highest quality clean water minus the normal expense. Ive heard some great things about it and my colleague got great results with it.
Thanks.
Great detailed explanation.
Excelente vídeo, agradezco su gran aporte
Lizandro river
Thanks.
excellent details , nicely done
Thank you very much!
Great video thanks for sharing
You are most welcome!
Thanks for video
Great vide. I want to do this for my beach house. I am trying to figure out how the pump would turn on as I use the shower or sink
Thanks!
You are welcome.
If you haven't get black plastic sheeting to completely cover the white plastic of the inch tote. Doing this will prevent sunlight from causing the formation of green algae. It's easy to cover the tank if it's empty simply by lifting the tank out the covering it with black plastic sheeting.
I did end up wrapping the IBC totes in black plastic I had left over from another job.
Always buy twice as many fittings, pipe and parts that you need. You can always return it later.
Thanks.
Very good video similar to that what I have to do But I have two totes 275 gal right now And I will add 2 more And eventually connect them all together
That's awesome! I actually now have 3 tanks on this system. I use the water for composting manure and it has worked wonderfully this year.
Suggestion..., come off those gutters with a 90 degree street ell into a 3" Y with your clean out on the outside end. Also, you have a 3" sanitary tee in the middle (which means the water will only flow one way). They make a double sanitary (or double flow) tee that would flow from both directions. Did you make an updated video since completion?
Hi Steven, Thanks for the suggestions! I have done a few updates in the lessons learned video and a few others over the past year. The lessons learned video would have most of the updates.
question: If you put the tank up higher wouldn't it eliminate the need for an electric pump for the water and just use gravity for emptying?
This is the issue that I have.
No, gravity can only do so much, an on demand pump is necessary.
lol.. was building the almoust exact same first flush system myself without ever sseing it somewhere else. just was adding a short section with a snaller pipe under the T-joint and added some pingpong balls to the larger pipe under the laeger section. also left out the filter over the hole. the rest is identical. Funny to see someone sells that idea as a product :)
Awesome thoughts!
@@greatescapefarms thanks.. unfortunatly just an hour after i wrote that comment some heavy monsun rain managed to first get my tanks to overflow and later bring down an entire section of the rainwater collection pipes i had installed. Ended up with my garden becoming an temporary underwater landscape. Looks like my system is in desperate need for some improvement🙄
@@donalain69 Oh no... I'm so sorry you had to endure that. I guess better to happen now then a week before harvest.
@@greatescapefarms lol..thanks. harvest isnt really a problem. im not a farmer. just have a large garden.
and it happens quite often.. today again for example. the rain was so strong, it took 30 secounds to fill a 1000l tank.
Way to much to handle for the 2 inch drain opening on the tank.
also almoust impossible to filter it properly without getting the gutter along the roof to overflow.
@@donalain69 Wow, that's a lot of water.
thanks for your video, I am going to do this. What type of paint can I paint this with as my tank will be sitting on the south side of the house in full sun all day very hot sun in Oklahoma! From your video, I see I will have to paint it black and then paint it white to reflect the sun! what type of paint would you suggest? thanks ahead of time for your response!
I'm a good bit further north than you are so I can not speak to expertise on the paint to use in the hot south sun. We ended up using a thick black plastic (kind of like a thick contractor trash bag). We removed the white tote from the cage, wrapped the white tote and then put it back in the cage.
It is still a good idea to cover your totes with black plastic or paint to stop algae growth.
I'm wondering the same thing actually. I had mine all set up and once it was completed I was reading some more and found out this was a problem. I would like to know how much cover from light they would need as well.
I did end up wrapping the IBC totes in black plastic I had left over from another job.
Also... just an idea... depending on how far uphill you need that in your garden, you could potentially just use a syphon to move the water to another IBC tote near your garden - no electricity required!
Thanks!
We have 5000 gallons of rain water in our system. I'm posting videos of the system build now.
Thanks!
Pretty cool stuff Todd! IBC totes are awesome. I have some similar projects in progress. Where did you find your diverters?
+Andrew Gscheidle Hi Andrew, I got my diverters from www.aquabarrel.com.
Very informative video for something I'm planning on doing in the future, but a question I have is how does the collection box survive the winter? Do you empty it out?
Yes, I empty the tanks out. I only use my system for my nursery business in the spring, summer, and fall, so emptying works great for me. Here is the video on what I do: ua-cam.com/video/nKpfa1h9NYw/v-deo.html. If I needed the system in the winter, I'd use a stock tank heater in the tank and some kind of heat tape for the pipes. This one from amazon is a little pricy (www.amazon.com/Wrap-On-SEPTLS34731006-Pipe-Heating-Cables/dp/B0002YWM3M/ref=sr_1_5?crid=30XHJUZU7R58X&dchild=1&keywords=heat+tape+for+pipes+from+freezing&qid=1623752420&sprefix=heat+tape+freezing%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-5) but I'd use a cheaper version of this.
@@greatescapefarms thank you!
@@Quantities You are most welcome.
Those totes, are fine with water in the winter. If it gets extremely cold, you can insulate them, wrap them in blankets, build a building around them etc. I had 2 plumbed into my house and kept a space heater on them in the winter. The only time I had water freeze was in the tank I kept in my truck. I had like 2 bars of water in it and it did freeze when it got to like 10°. I had more problems with pipes freezing than the tank. They also have those cattle tank warmers you could use in the tanks in the winter
@@Dee-1969 Thanks. I'm looking into tank warmers for another system for my chickens in the winter.
Did you ever end up using the cap on the top? If so how did you vent the tote?
I just ended up using screen that was wire-tied around the lid to keep mosquitos out
I see this was done a few years ago....wondering about rhe longevity of that waynes electric pump...stll going or crap out?
It is still going, but I must admit we only use it a few times a year.
@@greatescapefarms thanks for the response. generally good reviews on it. should fit the bill nicely.
@@nmikk5445 Hope it works well for you.
one more question if you could be so kind to answer,,,, what happens when the tank of rain water is full and it is still raining? where does the excess water go?
We made an overflow for that very event. We didn't think of that until after the video was made, so it's not shown in this video. I believe we did show it in one of our lessons learned videos where we show the mistakes and additional things to think of.
Rise the tank up...
Thanks
Can you tell me what those J shaped braces are that are holding up your pipes? Do you think they make them for 3" pipe (I am assuming you are using 4" pipes? Are they made from plastic? Are they sturdy? They look like they could really help me with my need to hang the pipes on the back of the shop like you did. Where did you purchase them? Thanks.
I just looked on lowes.com and found this: HoldRite 4-in to 4-in dia Plastic J-hook. They come in 4" and 3" sizes. The stated price online at lowes is $1.58
@@greatescapefarms Thank you. Super affordable. At this rate I could buy quite a few of them to secure the heavy 3" schedule 40 PVC pipes to the outside wall of my Shop and then hopefully support the pipe spanning across a ten feet to the bucket of my water tank. My only concerns are that PVC schedule 40 pipe might be too heavy. And, I am also wondering how these hooks will last in the hot sun. Mine will be south facing.
@@seancarney9348 My building is west facing, so it gets sun for half a day. If you are worried about weight, you could just add more to distribute the weight. I have not looked, but they likely have weight specs on line.
@@greatescapefarms Thank you very much for your response again. I found some specs that indicate they can hold 50 lbs. The 3" PVC pipes I am using weigh 72 lbs for a 20 lb piece. Anyhow, I believe the answer you gave is correct. As long as I use enough of the J-Hooks I should be OK. I need to get to a Lowes or a HomeDepot soon to see how thick the plastic will be from the front to the back of the part that I will be putting against the barn/shop. The reason is that my shop siding has ridges that stick out that are sticking out about 3/4 of an inch. So, if the J-Hooks are 3/4" or more thick I should be fine to use them. Since I am very rural it is at least an hour each way to get to either of those stores. I would love to know how thick they are and also if you think that I can use screws instead of nails.
@@seancarney9348 I'm 45 minutes from these stores myself, so I feel your pain. I only ever use screws on any project. As for thickness, I'd recommend going to the website of the store you will be shopping at and looking at the specs. Each store will have different products and each store may have more than one product. Each product will have minor differences in specs as to thickness and weight load.
You need to cover in 6 mill black plastic . Do it before you fill it ..
Why
I did end up wrapping the IBC totes in black plastic I had left over from another job.
Eleanor - to prevent the algae that ended up growing in the tanks
Where is your place
We are just outside of Romney, WV in Hampshire County.
Leafeater looks like a urinal to me...😊
:)
use a ram pump instead of an electric pump... no electricity = FREE... and it can pump all that collected water uphill.
Where is he supposed to get the flowing water with good head to power the ram pump?
ninja5672 not to mention a ram pump requires large amounts of excess water that something like a stream provides.
I discovered ram pumps a few years ago. It won't work with the rainwater system but I do have a running stream, so it's on my radar for a future project.
Complicated and expensive. All I want to do is use rainwater to water my garden this year instead of hauling out buckets of bath water or digging a waterline. I've setup a basic system without all the bells and whistles. Now all I have to do is tweak it. Filters and improving my short first run off. Need to figure out an over flow setup and correct leaks. If you have any further suggestions that would be nice as I'm learning from your example.
Did you get your system up and running with all the tweaks?
Wouldn’t life be easier with a tripod?
I eventually got one.
Tar shingles...no way ...poision for plants ..metal roof only..poision for human consumption
Thanks.
The tar leaching ( if any ) is minute
i think i saw you have tar shigles, if so , do not drink is not for human consumption. be safe
Thanks - I actually have a metal roof and only use the water for plants.
Are you sure..?
Sure about what?
